Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'warns his players he will be axed if they lose to both Tottenham and Manchester City' as pressure rises

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the second most likely manager to be sacked next
* The draw against Aston Villa took them to 18 points from 14 games this season
* Manchester United have been on a bad run and Mauricio Pochettino is available

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned his players that he could be sacked if Manchester United lose to Tottenham and Manchester City this week, according to The Sun.

A United source said: 'Ole was a little bit emotional and told them that if they don't get two results this week, he could be gone.

'It is the worst time to be facing Spurs with Jose coming back.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned his players that he could be sacked if he loses his next two. Mauricio Pochettino has hinted he could be interested in a quick return to management

Solskjaer jumped up to second in the bookmakers' list of managers next in line to leave their job following United's disappointing 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday evening.

The draw against Villa took them to 18 points for the campaign from 14 games - their fewest since way back in 1988-89, a staggering 31 years ago.

Back then, United also picked up 18 points and went on to finish 11th in the table. If they achieve something similar this term, there seems little chance of Solskjaer leading them into next season.

The Norwegian bizarrely claimed that the Premier League table, in which United currently sit ninth, is not his biggest concern after Tyrone Mings cancelled out Victor Lindelof's header to earn Villa a point.

To add to Solskjaer's worries, Mauricio Pochettino has hinted he could be interested in a quick return to management following his departure from Tottenham, admitting he is 'open' to listening to any projects put before him.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham last month after a dreadful run of form that left them in 14th place in the Premier League - 11 points adrift of the Champions League places.

2 laga penentuan bagi Ole, setelah akhir pekan di OT malah cuma seri vs Villa, kalo 2 laga ini berakhir dengan kekalahan maka siap2 Pochettino atau Allegri yg akan menggantikan

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't fear for his job at Manchester United despite Premier League sacking season being in full swing as he prepares for Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford

* Manchester United are preparing to host Tottenham on Wednesday evening
* Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won just four of 14 league games this season
* But the Norwegian insists he doesn't fear for his job amid 'sacking season'
* Arsenal, Spurs and Watford have all sacked their managers in recent weeks
* Solskjaer insists he is part of a long-term plan to improve things at Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn't worried about his future at Manchester United after a spate of Premier League sackings and believes he still has the backing of the Old Trafford board.

The pressure is building on Solskjaer again with United in mid-table having managed only four league wins this season ahead of Wednesday night's clash against Tottenham — led by his predecessor Jose Mourinho.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino — one of three recent top-flight managerial casualties along with Arsenal's Unai Emery and Quique Sanchez Flores of Watford — is ready to return to work and would be the leading contender if United decided to make a change.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't fear for his job despite a poor start to Man United's season

Asked if he was worried about his job now sacking season is in full swing, Solskjaer said: 'No, it doesn't make me more concerned.

'It's that time of year and it's never nice to see colleagues lose their jobs. But I think everyone knows continuity is one of the keys of success. Some clubs have more patience than others, some clubs don't have that time and continuity.

'For me, with United, we have a plan in place and hopefully we can get the results to speed it up. Sometimes it doesn't go at the speed you want to but it's still going in the right direction.

'We (Solskjaer and United chief Ed Woodward) speak all the time so it's not knee-jerk — suddenly now we need to talk.

'I just know I have a set of values and beliefs. The club have values and beliefs and we have made these decisions together.

Solskjaer replaced Mourinho a year ago this month and was reluctant on Tuesday to discuss the state of the club he inherited from the Portuguese coach.

'I don't really have to go into that, I think it was clear to see,' he added. 'When you change manager halfway through the season the club isn't where it's supposed to be.'

Paul Pogba, who had a particularly strained relationship with Mourinho, is not yet fit to return after injury but Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic have a better chance.

'I don't think whoever the manager of the opposition team is will change their motivation,' said Solskjaer of his players. 'They are motivated to do well for United.'

Manchester United stars 'urged club's board to keep faith with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer' before Tottenham victory as senior players back under-fire boss

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under pressure going into 2-1 win over Tottenham
* Solskjaer had come under fire following draws with Sheffield United and Villa
* Manchester United's senior players are fully behind the Norwegian coach

Manchester United's senior stars told the club's board that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to bring success back to Old Trafford before their win over Tottenham.

Solskjaer's position as Manchester United manager was starting to be questioned following a poor run of results ahead of their home clash with Jose Mourinho's Spurs.

However, The Times suggest established members of their squad have pleaded with United's decision makers to give Solskjaer time in order for him to rebuild the club.

Manchester United's first team players are fully behind their manager despite their poor form

Solskjaer was originally given the reins on a temporary basis in December before landing the job full-time after impressing in the hotseat.

Manchester United's form tailed off towards the end of last season and remain way off the pace in the Premier League during the current campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri have been linked with the club during recent weeks but United's players would be against a mid-season managerial change.

The club's board are also keen to give Solskjaer time as the club legend looks to clean up the mess made by David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

United impressed on Wednesday night as they defeated Tottenham on Mourinho's first visit to Old Trafford as a rival manager since his sacking in December 2018.

Marcus Rashford netted a brace to give United the three points and ease the pressure off of Solskjaer and his coaching staff.

United take on Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

Key duo Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are both major doubts for this weekend's action.

Manchester United tell Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job is safe and they WON'T be going for Mauricio Pochettino as Joel Glazer holds face-to-face talks with boss and says club will give him cash to chase Atletico star Saul Niguez

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given assurances over his future at Man United
* Mauricio Pochettino had been linked with the job after his sacking at Tottenham
* It follows Manchester United's 2-1 victory in the derby against rivals City
* Solskjaer has also been told that the club will be willing to spend more money
* Saul Niguez and Erling Braut Haaland are both targets as they look to rebuild

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been assured by the Glazer family that they are fully behind him at Manchester United.

The United manager has had to quell speculation about his future, particularly with Mauricio Pochettino available following his sacking by Tottenham and a run of below par performances in November.

United have maintained Solskjaer's position is safe and they have patience for his project, however, it is understood Joel Glazer spoke to Solskjaer in person to underline the owners' belief in his plans for the club and to reiterate he had their full support going forward.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been assured by the Glazers that his future at Man United is safe. The Glazers recognise that Solskjaer needs more time to rebuild

United have responded with wins over Tottenham and Manchester City to propel themselves into fifth place and are back in contention for a Champions League place.

The Glazers recognise that Solskjaer needs time to rebuild a squad the way he wants it while key players such as Paul Pogba are still to return to play a part.

Executive chairman Ed Woodward is determined to bring in better players for the first team with two new midfielders and a striker targeted.

Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez remains one ambitious option while United are confident of attracting Erling Braut Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg, though both are more realistic for the summer.

Saul Niguez (left) and Erling Braut Haaland (right) are both targets for Manchester United

United also held an interest in Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek but he is poised to join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Talking to Norwegian channel TV2, Solskjaer said: 'This week might cause people to talk a bit less, and for me it's always more fun to talk about things other than critique or speculations. I find it unnecessary when I know what we are doing and trying to do, and what we have planned going forward.

'If we can keep these boys injury-free, we will take lots of points — and we are going to reinforce the squad.

'It is physically tough to play football the way I want to play football. But we are on our way to become as robust as I want and need. These boys have the right attitude, they have the belief, they are boys that I want to keep going forward, that's why they are here right now.'

Solskjaer gave his players two days off following Saturday's 2-1 derby victory over Manchester City.

United's squad were in full voice as they celebrated their win singing loudly in their dressing room at the Etihad afterwards on Saturday evening before the majority of the team were transported by coach to Manchester airport ahead of flying to their Christmas party in London.

United face AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday as they look to top their group having already qualified, before taking on Everton in the Premier League and Colchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is SAFE from the sack at Manchester United as Old Trafford chiefs back him to turn the club around (even with their worst points tally at this stage in 30 years)

* Manchester United were beaten 2-0 at home by Burnley on Wednesday night
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quickly became the bookmakers' favourite in the sack race
* However, United's owners and board have no intention of getting rid of him
* Solskjaer has now overseen United's worst start to a season in over 30 years
* He admitted that he could understand why United fans are 'disappointed'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not in danger of losing his job at Manchester United, despite Wednesday night's miserable defeat by Burnley.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford by the Premier League strugglers, leading to renewed calls for Solskjaer to be sacked.

But United's board have no intention of getting rid of him, even though the club have their lowest points tally after 24 games in over 30 years.

United could have moved to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea with a victory on Wednesday night, but instead find themselves six points behind Frank Lampard's men and level on points with Tottenham and Wolves.

Their total of 34 points is the lowest since the 1989-90 season, when they had 25 from 24 games and finished the campaign down in 13th position.

Wednesday night's result meant Solskjaer quickly became the bookmakers' favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job, with the Norwegian odds-on at 8/11 with William Hill.

However, club owners the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward have no plans to axe the former Cardiff boss, despite their hopes of reaching next season's Champions League suffering another blow.

They have continued to back Solskjaer, even though he has now lost 12 top-flight games since being given Old Trafford's top job on a permanent basis.

His record since being promoted from caretaker boss to manager in March of last year consists of 19 wins, 11 draws and 15 defeats in all competitions.

Manchester United will not sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite losing at home to Burnley. Solskjaer retains the support of the owners, the Glazers. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is still behind Solskjaer, despite United's abysmal form. Solskjaer is favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked with the bookies

'I can understand supporters are disappointed when times are tough,' Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference.

Asked if there had been signs of progress, he replied: 'Today there wasn't in the end because at the end you do feel disillusioned, as you say, because maybe they do.

'But for us we've just got to stick to our values, stick to our beliefs and knowing that there's no use feeling sorry for yourself.

'We just need to make sure that we try to help the players and the team. The players hear the fans.

'Today wasn't a fair reflection on this group. I can't sit here and do anything but hold my hands up. That's where we're at.'

A chorus of boos rang around Old Trafford along with chants against the Glazers and Ed Woodward as Solskjaer and his players left the field on Wednesday night.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand admitted his old club had left him 'embarrassed' after the defeat, which was their second in succession after last Sunday's loss against fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

'I'm sitting here embarrassed. It's embarrassing to be here seeing this,' he said on BT Sport.

'You can't defend this. Fans were walking out after 85 minutes. People at the top need to see this and make changes and put a plan in place. Young kids in schools around the country won't be wearing Man United shirts, they won't be wanting to come here and see this.

'Nothing there suggests this is laying the foundation of future. I don't see a pathway. Where's the target set on the wall, saying this is how we're going to get there? Money has been spent willy-nilly in the past seven years, what's to show?'

When asked about the current transfer window, Solskjaer insisted that United, who are still in talks over a £55million deal for Bruno Fernandes, do want to strengthen their squad again before the month is over.

'We're looking to strengthen and we know we have to,' he said.

'We let some players go because we needed to start afresh. We know we need quality and numbers.

'I think everyone can see that these players are being stretched. They are stretched and I have got absolutely no complaints on any of them because they give absolutely everything they've got.'

United are next in action on Sunday afternoon when they face either Tranmere or Watford away from home in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It's obvious what Manchester United need to do after the blind optimism of appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - hire Mauricio Pochettino

* Mauricio Pochettino should be the man to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Solskjaer's appointment was like blind optimism from Manchester United
* Sir Alex Ferguson always knew that Pochettino was the man for the job
* The atmosphere at United's 2-0 home defeat by Burnley was horrendous

The appointment felt from the beginning like an act of blind optimism from a club seeking the elixir of their glorious past after the preening self-absorption of Jose Mourinho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer actually collected his clothes from an Altrincham dry cleaners. He actually liked his players. But a fundamental niceness can no more sustain a football team than ghosts of ages past. The images of Manchester United’s players arriving for their spa day in the aftermath of humiliation at Burnley’s hands tells us how utterly lost this great institution has become.

The prime obstacle to the change of manager so urgently needed is the individual conspicuous by his absence from Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Ed Woodward has worked his way through four managers in six years and burnt his way through the thick end of £750million in the process. His personal reputation is invested in Solskjaer more than any of the other hires.

The necessary action is so blindingly obvious that you wish, for United’s sake, that the club had owners who were remotely connected. Mauricio Pochettino is not only available but he fits the great club’s philosophy like a glove.

Sir Alex Ferguson always knew this. There was a reason why he, Pochettino and the then Tottenham manager’s assistant Jesus Perez sat down together at Scott’s in Mayfair in 2016 to enjoy a £114 bottle of Brunello di Montalcino 2011. (‘Myself and Sir Alex spoke, and Jesus drank,’ Pochettino later related with a smile.)

It is blindingly obvious that Manchester United need to go with Mauricio Pochettino next. The appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was an act of blind optimism from Man United. Sir Alex Ferguson knew that Pochettino was the right man for the job all the back in 2016

It was around the same time that Ferguson described Pochettino as ‘the best manager in the Premier League’. He is the one who fits more essentially than any other into Ferguson’s notion of what successful football management is all about, not least developing a youthful, homegrown core.

Woodward is the safest man in Old Trafford, secure enough to maintain the course he has set, with a share price which has soared from $15.33 in October to around $20 now. These are the numbers that matter in the space United now occupy.

But the mood in Old Trafford on Wednesday was desultory, deathly; about as bad as any night in what they laughably still call the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ across the seven years since Ferguson walked away. Every day of this self-imposed purgatory puts off the moment when United must set about tackling the yawning gulf between them and Liverpool. Every day without change is a wasted one.

Manchester United WILL consider sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if results do not improve... and England boss Gareth Southgate is leading contender to replace him after Euro 2020

* Man United will consider sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if poor form goes on
* England boss Gareth Southgate is the leading candidate to take over if he goes
* Solskjaer has credit in the bank but United's woeful form is causing concern
* Southgate is seen as a good fit to continue United's policy of promoting youth

Manchester United WILL consider sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if results do not improve at Old Trafford this season — with England manager Gareth Southgate a leading contender to take over after Euro 2020.

United have invested heavily in the Solskjaer project and want the popular Norwegian to turn things around, but senior sources have also quoted the 'Kenny Dalglish scenario', when Liverpool fired the greatest legend in the club's history in 2012 to pave the way for Brendan Rodgers and then Jurgen Klopp.

As scorer of United's Champions League winner in the 1999 Treble season, Solskjaer has credit in the bank, but the 46-year-old privately acknowledges he will not be given three years to win a trophy like Klopp was at Liverpool.

England boss Gareth Southgate is a leading contender to take over at Manchester United. United are willing to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if results don't start to improve this season. Three league defeats in four matches has intensified talk of Solskjaer getting the sack

United, whose fans protested against the owners after losing to Burnley at Old Trafford last Wednesday, face an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Tranmere on Sunday, then meet Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday trailing 3-1 from the first leg.

While Mauricio Pochettino is generally regarded as the front-runner should a vacancy arise at Old Trafford, Southgate is seen as a good fit to continue United's policy of promoting youth and to act as a responsible figurehead.

He is a regular visitor to United's training ground as England manager and admires the way the club develops players.

In return, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been impressed by how the England team has evolved under Southgate's leadership.

The pressure on Solskjaer after a run of three league defeats in four matches has intensified because of loud chants against the Glazer family and Woodward at Old Trafford.

And behind the scenes there is disillusionment from influential figures such as Sir Alex Ferguson, The Class of 92 headed by Gary Neville and other ex-stars.

Sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is NOT the answer for Manchester United... they have become a pound shop Real Madrid and it's time Ed Woodward took the blame for this shambles

* Many pundits and fans have suggested Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be sacked
* Manchester United's recent 2-0 home defeat to Burnley saw fans walk out early
* Ed Woodward needs to look at his underachievement over the past seven years
* The club is a far cry from its glory era and feels like a pound shop Real Madrid

So they sold Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's best goalscorer to Inter Milan. They loaned his best defender to Roma. His best midfielder is available for weddings and birthday parties but very rarely for football matches.

They loaned Alexis Sanchez without replacing him, too, although whether anybody really noticed he had gone is a moot point. Solskjaer's best forward is out injured for most of the rest of the season, too.

When Solskjaer tries to sign someone in the transfer window, his executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, suddenly decides he doesn't want to be Father Christmas any more and says he won't pay.

Pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but his task has been made harder by the club. Ed Woodward has much to answer for on United's demise

To make things even better, one of those targets, Erling Braut Haaland, has scored five goals in 57 minutes in the Bundesliga for his new club, Borussia Dortmund. And yet Solskjaer is out of his depth, apparently. That's what I keep hearing.

Woodward, who is still the de facto director of football, started the clear-out at Old Trafford but forgot the rebuild. Manchester United have got more noodle sponsors than functioning midfielders but let's not allow that to get in the way of the idea that Solskjaer isn't up to the job.

United are fifth in the Premier League. That's a place higher than they were when Jose Mourinho left and scarpered back to London.

With the squad Solskjaer has, and the mess he was bequeathed by the conglomerate of incompetence that came before him, that he has managed to keep United in contention for the top four is an achievement, not a reason for scorn. In case you hadn't noticed, United have not been title contenders for a while.

It remains to be seen whether Woodward will bow to pressure and pull the trigger on Solskjaer. Fans are now turning against the United chief, with vile and disrespectful chants in the stands

Woodward and the Glazer family can put their hands up for that. They have led United to a land a million miles away from the place where Liverpool and Manchester City reside.

The scrap for the best of the rest is their blasted landscape now and somehow Solskjaer has managed to keep them ahead of Arsenal and Spurs in the race of the one-eyed giants.

This may not be the most opportune time to defend Solskjaer. The eve of an away trip to League One strugglers Tranmere Rovers, which has got FA Cup giant-killing written all over it, very rarely is. And, sure, the home league defeat by Burnley last Wednesday, the lines of fans heading for the exits with 10 minutes to go and the swathes of empty seats was not a good look.

But to get rid of Solskjaer now would be the most damning symbol yet of quite how far the club has strayed from what made it great. To bow to hysterical demands to change the manager yet again, barely a year after he took over, would be to complete United's transition to the antithesis of what they once stood for.

Once, that was stability and trophies. Now they teeter on the brink of anarchy.

Everyone knows who is really to blame for the omnishambles at England's biggest club. It is the club's owners, the Glazers, and their placeman, Woodward. Many of United's match-going fans recognise this, which is why they still chanted their support for Solskjaer on Wednesday night and turned on the ownership instead.

Some of the chants went too far. The Bonfire Song, whose lyrics paint a picture of people being burned on a pyre, has become a staple of English football and United fans have, apparently, been adapting it to include Woodward and the Glazers for some time.

Some years ago, England fans sang about putting Rio and Anton Ferdinand on the fire. It was not acceptable then and it is not acceptable now. That, however, should not be allowed to obscure the fact that Woodward and the Glazers bear the primary responsibility for what has happened to United. They bear the responsibility for the club's fall from grace.

They bear the responsibility for turning it into a cash-cow rather than a football club. They bear the responsibility for a series of botched managerial appointments. The buck stops with them. They bear the responsibility for the shockingly poor player recruitment that has left Solskjaer with the skeletal playing staff he has now.

The Glazers have taken somewhere in the region of £1billion in dividends out of United and the club is starting to reek of decay on and off the field.

Compare them with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs and United look old and jaded and tired and starved of investment.

Woodward is not a malevolent man but he is the frontman for a regime that has ripped the heart out of a club that once ruled the English game.

He does not deserve to be abused and threatened but nor does he deserve to be in charge of a club like United. In the seven years since he took over from David Gill, he has been a spectacular failure. Woodward is clearly a very talented financial operator but he is blinded by celebrity and by reputation.

The mess at United is deep-rooted, and leaves the clubs miles away from Liverpool and City

This is a man who, it is reported, addressed Wayne Rooney as 'Wazza' when he texted him as if he wanted to be his friend. This is a man who hired Louis van Gaal and Mourinho when they were both past their sell-by dates. This is a man who blew United's chance of hiring Jurgen Klopp six years ago by trying to sell United to him as 'an adult version of Disneyland'.

This is a man who has sanctioned the purchases of has-beens with famous names and of journeymen who barely survive a season. This is a man who thought he could throw money at the situation and found out, perhaps for the first time in his life, that money can't buy everything. This is a man who has turned Manchester United from a football club into a trading floor.

Once, they were an elite club awash with tradition and class. Now, they're a pound shop Real Madrid, worlds behind Liverpool and City.

The conclusion is obvious: Woodward should be kept a long, long, long way away from football decisions. He should have been removed from his role a long time ago. The fact that he wasn't is more evidence the Glazers prize success off the field above success on it.

Woodward's only slim hope of redemption lies in continuing to back Solskjaer, as he has promised to do. And if the Glazers ask him to betray the manager and fire him, Woodward should do the right thing, take the blame himself and finally admit that if there is one person at Old Trafford who is out of his depth, it is him.

Mauricio Pochettino 'hopeful of landing Manchester United job' as pressure continues to grow on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Mauricio Pochettino is content to be patient when it comes to the United job
* He is still being considered, especially if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't improve
* Pochettino has been out of action since being sacked by Tottenham last year
* United are struggling and may miss out on Champions League qualification

Mauricio Pochettino is still hopeful of getting the Manchester United manager job next season, according to The Mirror.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under increasing pressure in the role, with United having their worst start to a season in over 30 years.

It is believed he could be given the sack if United fall outside of the top six this season, allowing Pochettino to pounce.

The Spaniard is reportedly willing to be patient when it comes to finding a new job, hinting that he would prefer to come back to the Premier League if possible.

He has been out of action since being sacked by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy towards the end of last year.

Jose Mourinho took over as manager, and results have been up and down, often hampered by the long term injury to Harry Kane.

Pochettino has been considered for the job before, and could be an ideal candidate if Solskjaer is shown the door this year.

Manchester United are competing in the Europa League, but could miss out on a European spot altogether if results in the league don't improve.

It is thought that some of their major sponsors, including adidas and Chevrolet, have Champions League clauses built into their big money contracts.
