FOKUS: Tradisi Boxing Day Di Sepakbola Inggris

Gw tambahin istilah boxing day (yang dirayain hanya di beberapa negara seperti Britania Raya, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and beberapa negara persemakmuran :

South Africa - Goodwill.
Ireland - St. Stephen's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Stiofáin) or the Day of the Wren (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín).
Netherlands, Lithuania, Austria, Germany, Scandinavia and Poland - The Second Christmas Day.

Wenger granted mid-winter break as Arsenal's Boxing Day clash with West Ham is OFF due to Tube strike (but United will play THREE times in SIX days)
dailymail.co.uk, Graeme Yorke - 13:20 GMT, 19 December 2012

Arsene Wenger has finally had his wish for a winter break granted... by London’s striking Tube drivers.

The Arsenal manager has long been a vocal supporter of the Barclays Premier League taking a mid-winter break like the top leagues in Spain, France, Italy and Germany.

Arsenal's match at home to West Ham on Boxing Day has been postponed due to industrial action on the London Underground, meaning they will not play a match for an entire week over the usually hectic festive period.

No go: The Gunners clash with West Ham at the Emirates must be rescheduled

Wenger's side will not kick a ball for seven days after their trip to Wigan on Saturday until they host Newcastle in the evening kick-off on December 29.

Manchester United, meanwhile, will play three times in six days facing a trip to Swansea (December 23), a home game against Newcastle (Boxing Day) and another home match against West Brom (December 29).

The Arsenal manager's call for a mid-winter break has become an annual tradition. Last month, he even suggested moving the season to be played January to November.

He said: 'I understand it looks completely strange as people have been educated the current way but I moved to Japan and the season was in January to November. We started training in January and after a while it was completely normal.

'The period of rest would be the same. It wouldn’t change the number of games. You would not be confronted with these situations when players are playing in two different championships. You would play during the summer period in the best period for football to be played.

In 2011, Wenger said: 'I think after that [the Christmas break] you would like a little breather. I would like a winter break but after Christmas. Create a break after 2 January for two weeks. We can go on holiday for one week and prepare for one week.'

Arsenal have postponed their Boxing Day clash with West Ham until the new year due to the proposed London Underground strike.

The club said they spoke with several agencies before making the decision, including the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, London Underground, the Premier League, West Ham and Islington Council.

Tickets already purchased for this match are still valid for the rearranged date. Arsenal confirmed that this will be played on either Wednesday, January 23 (kick off 7.45pm) or Saturday, January 26 (kick off 3pm).*

The date is dependent on the results in the FA Cup third round, which is being played on the weekend of Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6. West Ham host Manchester United while Arsenal travel to Swansea.

A club statement read: 'The paramount concern was always the duty of care towards the Arsenal supporters, West Ham United supporters, matchday employees and workers and indeed everyone who was planning to attend the game on Boxing Day.

'In addition to the proposed industrial action on London Underground on Boxing Day, there are extremely limited services operating on National Rail train services into London on this day. Also, normal parking restrictions close to the stadium still apply. This would have caused severe disruption, or at worst, inability for supporters or matchday employees and workers to get to Emirates Stadium.

'We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused supporters but we feel that the right decision has been made.'

Arsenal's 60,000-seater ground is five minutes' walk from Holloway Road station in north London, with Highbury and Islington and Finsbury Park also close by. Many fans use the service to get to games so a suspension would have caused chaos if the match had gone ahead.

A strike by Tube drivers last year forced Arsenal to delay their Boxing Day match with Wolves by 24 hours but they cannot do the same this year as they have a game against Newcastle on December 29.

A midweek evening in January seems the likeliest date for re-staging but neighbours Tottenham Hotspur and the FA Cup are also factors to be considered.

QPR's match with West Brom will kick off at 3pm as planned after the club held a meeting this afternoon to discuss the matter.

Loftus Road is close to three Tube stations and fans are often reliant on the service but a statement on Ranger's website read: 'Supporters are advised to allow extra time for their journeys to and from Loftus Road.

'Buses will be running on the usual Sunday/Bank Holiday service on the day of the fixture, whilst parking in the borough will be free.

'Supporters who are unable to attend the fixture owing to the Tube strikes will be entitled to a full refund.'

Fulham will wait for official confirmation of the Tube strike before deciding if any action needs to be taken over their Boxing Day match with Southampton at Craven Cottage.

Derailed: Fans will have found it difficult to get across the capital on Boxing Day

A club spokesman said: 'We are monitoring situation and putting contingency in place but remain fully committed to the game going ahead as scheduled.'

Fulham play Swansea three days later.

Charlton are the only Championship side hosting a Boxing Day fixture in the capital but it is understood their match with Ipswich should not be too badly disrupted and will go ahead. Most home fans travel in from Kent rather than central London.

The announcement by Aslef means London Underground drivers are on course to walk out on Boxing Day, as well as January 18 and 25 in a row over bank holiday pay. It will be the third successive Christmas walkout by Tube drivers.

The move was announced after Aslef members voted by 9-1 in favour of strikes. A spokesman said: 'The ballot result shows the strength of feeling that remains on this issue.'

Boxing Day football memories: Sportsmail remembers the festive fun from past years
dailymail.co.uk - 21:00 GMT, 24 December 2012

While most of Europe sits back and enjoys a winter break, the English football season cranks up into overdrive over the festive period. Here, Sportsmail reflects on Boxing Day brilliance from the past.

Christmas cheer: Boxing Day traditionally throws up some classic encounters

Neil Ashton
Crystal Palace 2 Brighton 0, 1986

Alan Mullery was returning to Selhurst Park with his beloved Brighton - two years after he was fired as Palace manager.

This time he couldn't turn the south coast club's fortunes around and they ran into an upwardly mobile Palace team managed by Steve Coppell at the age of just 31.

The Eagles, playing in their legendary red and blue sash strip - this one produced by Hummel - went ahead through winger Alan Irvine, who is now David Moyes' academy director at Everton.

In front of just over 8,000 supporters Palace scored a second through former Aylesbury striker Phil Barber.

Matt Barlow
Sheffield Wednesday 3 Manchester United 3, 1992

Two of the best teams in the country produced a Boxing Day classic with 37,000 inside Hillsborough.

Boxing on Boxing Day: Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday played out a thriller in 1992

A David Hirst-inspired Wednesday were three up by half-time but United fought back with Cantona, whose legend was in its infancy, grabbing the equaliser six minutes from time.

United went on to win the Premier League and Wednesday suffered double cup final heartache to Arsenal.

Chris Wheeler
Everton 2 *Manchester United 6, 1977*

An Everton team going for the title were favourites at home to a United side languishing in 14th place in the First Division table – even more so because Paddy Roche was deputising in goal for the injured Alex Stepney.

It was asking too much for Roche to keep a clean sheet, and Martin Dobson and Bob Latchford scored for Gordon Lee’s side. But goals from Lou Macari (2), Steve Coppell, Jimmy Greenhoff, Gordon Hill and Sammy McIlroy gave United a comprehensive win in front of nearly 50,000 at Goodison and a Boxing Day to remember.

Dominic King
Liverpool 5 West Brom 0, 2004

Boxing Day is curious with regards football. There is always a crackle in the atmosphere at games and the mood is generally good but despite racking my brains, I'm struggling to remember one humdinger of a game that stands out above everything else.

Saying that, Boxing Day 2004 was pretty good. Harchibald won the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, Kicking obliged half an hour later in the King George and Liverpool then demolished West Brom in the evening kick-off, winning 5-0 with Jon Arne Riise nearly ripping the net apart with one thunderbolt.

Laura Williamson
Lincoln City 1-2 Grimsby Town, 2011

One of the genuinely good things about playing in the Blue Square Premier has been the emphasis on holding local derbies over the festive period.

It’s a fantastic way to increase attendances and attention while people are at home with their families over Christmas, which is why the programme is dominated by derbies again in 2012.

Grimsby's 2-1 win at Lincoln last year was a highlight (although not quite as sweet as the 3-1 in the ‘return leg’ on New Year’s Day): let’s have the same again this time around, please.

Captain marvel: Steven Gerrard was on the scoresheet as Liverpool ran riot in 2004

Neil Moxley
Birmingham City 3 Aston Villa 0, 1982

Looking at the record books, it was 24 hours after Boxing Day, but I think every Birmingham City supporter worth his salt remembers what took place in 1982 in the Second City derby.

Aston Villa were, after all, the reigning European Champions. Birmingham City were rooted to the foot of the old First Division.

However, that didn't stop over 40,000 supporters packing out the ground, including 6-7,000 Villa fans housed in the Tilton Road End of the ground. It made for a cracking atmosphere.

Goals from Noel Blake, the late Ian Handysides and a scrambled effort from Mick Ferguson unexpectedly lifted the Blues from the foot of the table.

Birmingham City had taught the reigning European Champions a lesson. It's not a sentence they hear too often at St Andrew's...

John Edwards
Oldham 3, Manchester United 6, 1991

How quickly times change. It seems almost sacrosanct these days that a player returning to his old club should not, under any circumstances, celebrate scoring a goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest to recognise this unwritten oath, ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions’ League visit to Old Trafford, but it didn’t seem to bother Denis Irwin a couple of decades ago.

Setting foot on the Boundary Park pitch for the first time since signing for United, the attacking left-back scored not once but twice and went berserk each time, jumping up and down and punching the air.

A young unknown substitute replaced Bryan Robson at half-time and was taunted with donkey noises after miscontrolling his first touch. Oldham fans should have known better. It was Ryan Giggs, and he silenced them by waltzing round the Oldham keeper for United’s sixth goal.

Janine Self
Blackburn 2 Aston Villa 1, 1998

Brash, cocky, utterly confident, John Gregory brought second-placed Aston Villa to Blackburn on Boxing Day 1998.

Upsetting the odds: Blackburn turned the tables on John Gregory's Aston Villa in 1998

Struggling Rovers had just sacked Roy Hodgson and recruited Brian Kidd, who had made a decent start although the appointment would turn out to be disastrous.

At the time I was working in the north-west and Blackburn were one of 'my' teams. In a season of unmitigating lows, this was a rare high.

Kevin Gallacher and Tim Sherwood got the goals in a 2-1 win, aided by the sending-off of Michael Oakes. Riccardo Scimeca scored for Villa.

My memory? Gregory was superbly entertaining in the post-match press conference. And one year later, I had moved to the Midlands and Villa had become one of 'my' teams. Strange world.

Sami Mokbel
Coventry 0 Crystal Palace 2, 2007

This is a bit of an obscure one, but it sticks in my mind because it was my first Boxing Day game as a working journalist.

It wasn't memorable, Palace cruising to a 2-0 win at the Ricoh Arena thanks to goals from Clinton Morrison and Paul Ifill.

Handily, I was covering the Eagles for a local newspaper which means post-match player interviews were a hell of a lot easier to come by. A pretty Merry Christmas all round.

Laurie Whitwell
Stoke City 0 Manchester United 1, 2008

A personal rather than professional memory for me, given I have yet to work a Boxing Day fixture.

Argy bargy: Carlos Tevez was the hero in the closing stages for Manchester United at Stoke

The Britannia Stadium on 2008 was the setting and another stubborn performance from Stoke the context. United had just returned from winning the Club World Cup in Japan and were showing signs of jet-lag, with the score 0-0 into the final ten minutes.

No hangovers from Christmas indulgence in the stands though, with the atmosphere in both home and away sections particularly lively. A reminder of football’s raw pleasure.

When it seemed United would let two points slip, Carlos Tevez struck to send visiting bodies sprawling. A vital win on the way to a record-equalling 18th title.

Ian Ladyman
Everywhere

It’s hard to be specific but part of my love of English football stems from Boxing Days visits with my Dad to any one of the grounds in the north-west close to where I grew up.

Deepdale, Ewood Park, Turf Moor, Goodison, Anfield and Maine Road all got a visit at one stage or another over the years. Turn up, pay on the gate, stand (on tiptoes) on the terrace and go home again. Not quite as easy these days.

TOP BOXING DAY WINS

Winter has often been regarded as an important aspect of Manchester United’s seasons, where Reds sides have regularly built relentless momentum to either surge towards the top of the Premier League or to distance themselves from the rest of the pack. We've taken a look at six of United’s greatest Premier League triumphs on 26 December, including some breathtaking battles and impressive routs.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0-4 UNITED (1996/97)

David Beckham’s opener was the catalyst for another comfortable United victory as Nicky Butt, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Andy Cole also registered their names on the scoresheet. The latter’s strike marked a fine return from injury as the forward helped the Reds leapfrog other title contenders to be crowned champions.

SUNDERLAND 0-4 UNITED (2007/08)

On the back of a four-game winning streak during the type of winter charge United have been renowned for took shape, Wayne Rooney's sweeping strike, Cristiano Ronaldo's curling free-kick and a Louis Saha double helped the Reds to a vital three points on their way to pipping Chelsea to the title by two points.

UNITED 3-2 EVERTON (2003/04)

Usually more accustomed to protecting his own backline, Nicky Butt chipped in with his only domestic goal of the season to give Sir Alex’s team the lead in a tense encounter. Gary Neville’s own-goal levelled terms, but United established a stronger grip on the game courtesy of a Kleberson strike before David Bellion opened his league account to help the hosts retain top spot.

UNITED 5-0 WIGAN (2011/12)

Hotly pursuing neighbours Manchester City in search of league glory, the Reds extended their 100 per cent record against Wigan to 13 wins from as many matches. Ji-sung Park and Antonio Valencia netted, but it was Dimitar Berbatov who won the plaudits with a hat-trick rounded off by a typically cool penalty to keep alive United's title hopes with a fifth straight league win.

HULL 2-3 UNITED (2013/14)

As an intense struggle unfolded at the KC Stadium, a Rooney-inspired United heroically overturned a two-goal deficit. Chris Smalling nodded in a Rooney free-kick, before the latter volleyed in the leveller and then forced a James Chester own-goal to ensure the Reds took away all three points.

UNITED 4-3 NEWCASTLE (2012/13)

A truly thrilling contest. Heading into the clash at the top of the table, the Reds’ league supremacy was constantly under threat until the 90th minute when, after Robin van Persie had given United a late glimmer of hope, Javier Hernandez provided a grandstand finish at Old Trafford by slotting in a dramatic winner to help the hosts cement first place.

Boxing Day dan Periode Sibuk di Premier League: Digugat dan Dinanti
Rossi Finza Noor - detikSport

Menariknya, laga-laga Boxing Day dan akhir tahun selalu ramai.

ON THIS DAY: In 1957, was the last time ManUtd played on Christmas Day - beating Luton Town 3-0 in front of a crowd of 39,444.

@OptaJoe: 1 - Only one @premierleague game has taken place on Christmas Eve: Leeds United 3-1 Manchester United back in 1995. Deliverance.
