PADDY CRERAND QUESTIONS LACK OF PENALTIES

Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand is mystified by the number of penalties that have not been awarded to the Reds this season, although he has some sympathy for referees.

United are one of three teams to earn a single penalty in 23 Premier League games in 2016/17. That tally remained the same following Wednesday's 0-0 draw against Hull City, when the Reds were denied a possible spot-kick when Zlatan Ibrahimovic went to ground following a collision with Tom Huddlestone.

Writing in his United Review column prior to kick-off at Old Trafford, Crerand stated his belief that Jose Mourinho's team can feel hard done by in relation to penalty decisions this campaign.

"It almost feels like there is an agenda against United when it comes to penalties and the lack of them in our favour," Paddy wrote. "We're joint bottom of the table for penalties given, alongside Middlesbrough and West Brom – we’ve all had just one awarded to us in the Premier League this season. From our point of view, it’s crazy when you think how often we attack and get ourselves into the opposition box.

"I bet we get into the box more times than most teams in the league. I’m still baffled by the penalty that was given against us at Hull [in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg] and after the referee gave that I was even more baffled that he didn’t give the one for Chris Smalling.

"I don’t think the standard of refereeing is great but I understand how difficult their job is and they don’t seem to get much help from their assistants. Nevertheless, the fact we’ve only had one penalty in the league is unbelievable."

CRERAND: POINTS THAT PROVE REDS ARE CAPABLE

ManUtd.com's series of 'Promising Points' from 2016/17 gave Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand even more to talk about, following his popular weekly phone-in show on MUTV.

The 1968 European Cup winner talked about the four moments featured in our series - the tactical triumph over Chelsea, Marcus Rashford's mature winner against Anderlecht, Paul Pogba's strike in Stockholm and Jose Mourinho's passionate celebrations after seeing off Celta Vigo.

Paddy felt April's 2-0 victory over eventual champions Chelsea featured "the loudest noise at Old Trafford for some time" and emphasised what could be achieved in 2017/18 if the supporters get behind the team.

Crerand reckoned Rashford's calmly-taken effort in the Europa League quarter-final was a "fantastic moment" and believes, even though Pogba already has a "great deal of confidence", the Frenchman will have gained a boost from his opener in the final against Ajax.

Mourinho's celebrations also received a thumbs-up from the former Scotland international. "Football fans want to see a reaction from the manager," said Paddy. "It makes them realise he could have been standing alongside them in the crowd."

WATCH PADDY'S CHRISTMAS DINNER ON MUTV

Paddy Crerand was recently joined by fellow Manchester United legends Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson for a special Christmas meal at Arley Hall.

The Cheshire venue, one of the settings for the BBC TV series Peaky Blinders, was graced by the trio for a festive programme to be shown on MUTV at 15:00 GMT on Christmas Day - the same time when the Queen's annual speech appears on other channels.
