Tottenham SACK Jose Mourinho after dismal form at home and in Europe but he'll walk away with a compensation package of up to £20MILLION - with Julian Nagelsmann favourite to take over

* Jose Mourinho has been axed by Tottenham, days before the Carabao Cup final
* With the club set to miss out on the top four, Mourinho was dismissed on Monday
* Tottenham are seventh in the Premier League and five points adrift of fourth
* RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann is the early favourite to replace Mourinho
* Mourinho's sacking comes just hours after Tottenham joined the Super League
* He is expected to walk away with a compensation package of up to £20million

Tottenham have sacked Jose Mourinho with the club on course to miss out on Champions League football next season - although he is still set to walk away with up to £20million in compensation.

Mourinho, 58, replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 but has now been dismissed after a dismal Premier League campaign and failure in the Europa League.

The bombshell axing comes less than a week before Tottenham are set to take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho has been sacked as Tottenham manager, just days before the Carabao Cup final

A statement read: 'The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.'

Chairman Daniel Levy said: 'Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.

'Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

'He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.'

Mourinho has parted ways just hours after it was confirmed that Tottenham will join the controversial European Super League.

The axe has been brought down on Mourinho with Tottenham set to miss out on the top four. Mourinho is said to have alienated members of his squad and was sacked on Monday morning

Sportsmail understands that Mourinho leaves with significantly less than the widely purported £30m compensation package he was said to be due.

Sources have claimed that his package will not go over £20m due to performance-related clauses in his contract linked to European qualification and his £10m-per-season salary.

Mourinho will be placed on gardening leave by Tottenham despite his dismissal, meaning Spurs will continue to pay him as normal until he finds new employment.

As a result of Spurs' poor league position, Mourinho is effectively not entitled to his full compensation. Spurs are seventh in the Premier League, five points off the final Champions League place, currently occupied by West Ham.

Initial indications that Mourinho was earning £15m per season are said to be exaggerated.

His basic wage is closer to £10m, which significantly decreases his severance deal.

It has been claimed that coaches Ryan Mason and Chris Powell are set to take the reins for the rest of the season.

The club confirmed that Mason will take charge of first-team training today.

The search has now begun for a permanent successor to Mourinho - with an appointment expected this summer.

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann has been named as the early favourite to replace Mourinho

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann has been identified as the favourite to take over.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of Nagelsmann, who is widely deemed as one of the most talented young coaches in world football.

It is believed that Naglesmann, who is only 33, was under consideration for the Spurs hotseat after Pochettino's departure in 2019, although Mourinho was later handed the job.

Leipzig will not allow Nagelsmann to leave this summer, however, without receiving a compensation package worth £17m.

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid coach Mourinho's last game in charge at Tottenham came in the 2-2 draw against Everton on Friday.

Despite Harry Kane's leveller at Goodison Park, the dropped points dealt a major blow to their hopes of securing a spot in the Champions League.

Daniel Levy took the decision to sack Mourinho with Tottenham struggling on multiple fronts. Mourinho's final weeks in charge were marred by swipes in the press and constant criticism

Sources have claimed that the underwhelming display proved to be the final straw.

Tottenham are languishing in seventh place in the Premier League standings, five points adrift of fourth, and Levy has now pulled the trigger.

Kane paid tribute to Mourinho after the news broke and wished him well.

'Thank you for everything boss,' Kane wrote. 'A pleasure to have worked together. I wish you all the best for your next chapter.'

The cup final next weekend represents a chance for Spurs to lift silverware for the first time since their triumph in the same competition in 2008.

Mourinho will no longer be in charge for it, though, with little tangible progress made over the last season and a half.

He could only guide Tottenham to a sixth-placed finish during his first campaign in charge, albeit after taking over halfway through with the team languishing in 14th.

This term has been a step back, with the north London outfit knocked out of Europe in humiliating fashion by Dinamo Zagreb and reeling from other poor results.

Mourinho's final weeks at the helm were marred by swipes in the press and constant criticism of his own players.

For the first time in his managerial career, Mourinho was made to suffer 10 league defeats in a single season.

The on-field misery also saw Tottenham drop 20 points from winning positions this season. No other top-flight club has lost more when leading.

His options to take up another top job are likely to be dwindling after his latest sacking, having now been shown the exit door four times in England.

With Chelsea (twice), Manchester United and now Tottenham all choosing to axe him, Mourinho is sure to be running out of choices.

He has enjoyed great success in Italy, Spain and Portugal, so could be forced to take a job in one of those countries and move away from England.

Everton have officially confirmed the appointment of Rafa Benitez as their new manager

The Spaniard, formerly manager of rivals Liverpool, has signed a three-year deal at Goodison

Rafa Benitez has become the first man since William Edward Barclay in the 1890s to manage Liverpool and Everton

Tottenham have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager after a long search. Daniel Levy's frustrating search for a new Tottenham head coach has finally come to an end

The 47-year-old was not Spurs' first-choice for the role but has signed a two-year deal. Nuno replaces Jose Mourinho in the dugout, who was sacked by Spurs in April of this year

wah..Benitez akhirnya official jadi pelatih Everton, bakal terjadi pro kontra nih.

Ruthless Watford sack ANOTHER boss as Xisco Munoz becomes the first Premier League manager to lose his job after just seven matches this season... and less than six months after promotion!

* Watford have sacked their head coach Xisco Munoz after a poor run of form
* The Hornets were beaten 1-0 by Leeds on Saturday and have four defeats so far
* The club have a rich history of axing bosses - Munoz is the seventh in five years
* Claudio Ranieri is the bookmakers' early favourite to take over at Vicarage Road

Watford have swung the axe on yet another manager as Xisco Munoz was sacked just seven games into the Premier League season after their 1-0 loss to Leeds.

The Spaniard was hired 10 months ago and guided the Hornets to an immediate return to the top flight, but the board have decided to pull the trigger after a poor recent run that has seen them lose four times.

Sacking managers is nothing new for the Hertfordshire outfit - Munoz is now the seventh boss to bite the dust in the last five years.

Watford have sacked head coach Xisco Munoz after just seven games of the new season. It comes just six months after he guided them to Premier League promotion in his first season. Watford owner Gino Pozzo is never afraid to swing the axe - he has sacked seven managers in the last five years

Munoz departs with Watford in 14th place on seven points - four above the drop zone after two wins, one draw and four losses.

In a statement, the club said: 'Watford FC confirms Xisco Munoz has left his post as the club's Head Coach.

'The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving.

'The Hornets will always be grateful to Xisco for the part he played in securing last season's promotion and wish him well for his future career in football.

'No further club comment will be available until the imminent announcement of a new Head Coach.'

Sportsmail understands Claudio Ranieri is emerging as a shock candidate to become the new Watford boss.

The Italian is understood to be an option to take the reins at the Premier League club as the club assess potential candidates.

Watford finished the 2020-21 Championship season with 91 points under Munoz's leadership, finishing as runners up to Norwich City.

That impressive run looked to be continuing into the new Premier League campaign as they caused a shock by downing Villa in the season opener, but results have looked shaky ever since.

The club said recent displays under the Spaniard 'indicate a negative trend' with just two wins. Watford started the campaign with a win but have since stuttered and are now in 14th place

They lost their next three games in a row against Brighton, Tottenham and Wolves before beating relegation rivals Norwich 3-1, before a draw against Newcastle and then a loss to Marcelo Bielsa's men, leaving them in 14th in the league.

He became the 17th boss to take charge of the club in the reign of owner Gino Pozzo, who has never been afraid of sacking a manager when things are going badly.

The Italian once sacked Billy McKinley after just two months, with a coach rarely lasting one season under his tenure. Quique Sanchez Flores was sacked after one year in May 2016 before being rehired in September 2019 - and sacked in December of the same year.

Nigel Pearson was hired to save the club from relegation in that 2019-20 season but was shown the door just two games before the end of the campaign amid a reported row with the owners.

Vladimir Ivic was chosen to begin the rebuild project in the Championship that summer but lasted until just December, with Munoz coming in and putting the club on a superb run before running out of momentum in the top flight.

Claudio Ranieri CONFIRMED as Watford's new boss... with Italian taking charge of his fourth Premier League side after they ruthlessly sacked Xisco Munoz at the weekend

* Claudio Ranieri was confirmed as Watford's new manager on Monday afternoon
* The Italian replaces Spaniard Xisco Munoz, who was sacked on Sunday
* The 69-year-old has had spells at Chelsea, Fulham and famously Leicester City
* He becomes the Hornets' 16th permanent boss during the last 10 years
Claudio Ranieri has sealed his shock return to English football after being confirmed as Watford's new head coach on Monday.

On Sunday, Sportsmail revealed the Italian, 69, had emerged as a contender to replace Xisco Munoz, who was sacked after Saturday's 1-0 loss at Leeds.

And Ranieri's appointment was ratified on Monday, as he arrived at the club's Hertfordshire training complex to complete his move to the Hornets.

Ranieri has signed a contract until the end of next season and will be joined at Vicarage Road by assistant coaches Paolo Benetti and Carlo Cornacchia, along with fitness coach Carlo Spignoli.

Brentford 9/1
He is now tasked with trying to keep Watford in the Premier League after their return to the top-flight.

Xisco has left the club four points clear of safety after seven games.

Ranieri pulled off arguably English football's greatest achievement in 2016 by leading Leicester to the title. He also had a four-year stint at Chelsea, losing the job to Jose Mourinho in 2004, and a three-month spell at Fulham before being sacked in February 2019.

The appointment of Ranieri - who left Sampdoria in May after two years at the helm of the Serie A outfit - marks a shock comeback to English football for one of the league's most recognisable figures.

Ranieri led Leicester to an unlikely title more than five years ago, some 16 years after his first job on these shores at Stamford Bridge.

He would go on to manage the likes of Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Inter Milan and Roma before a spell in charge at Fulham, but could not save the club from top-flight relegation in 2019.

Ranieri however is now the Hornets' 16th different permanent boss over the course of the last decade, and the 13th since the Pozzo family completed their takeover of the club in 2012.

The ex-Leicester boss' first game in charge is set to see Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool visit Vicarage Road in the Premier League after the international break on October 16.

Ranieri is the Hornets' 16th different permanent boss at Vicarage Road over the last 10 years

Over the weekend, Watford made the ruthless decision to sack Spaniard Munoz after just 10 months in charge.

The 41-year-old led the club back to the Premier League in his first season, but the hierarchy were ultimately unsatisfied with their start of four defeats in their opening seven games back in the top flight.

The latest of those reverses came in their 1-0 defeat by Leeds on Saturday, leaving them in 15th place on seven points.

Xisco was popular among the Watford players and staff - particularly following Vladimir Ivic's tenure - but his lack of control at the club was viewed as a clear indicator towards his departure.

'The board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving,' the club said in a statement.

'The Hornets will always be grateful to Xisco for the part he played in securing last season's promotion and wish him well for his future career in football.'

Munoz issued his own statement via Twitter after leaving Vicarage Road, saying: 'It's been a wonderful journey and it concluded in a way that I neither expected nor wished for.

'I'm grateful and I will only remember all the good things I have experienced.

'It's a sad day for me and my family because it marks the end of a period at a club and in a city where we have felt at home.

'I've got nothing but words of gratitude for the club that gave me the opportunity to start my first adventure in this exciting country.

'My heartfelt thanks to the players to put blind faith and believing in me and my staff from the first moment so that together we could achieve the dream of promotion to the Premier League.

'And many thanks to all the members of the club who don't appear on the photos, because they are essential for the proper functioning of this team. You made my life so much easier.

'Finally, I would like to make a special shout out to the fans. It's only been a year, but I will never forget its intensity and the treatment you have always given me over the year. I will always be a Watford FC fan.'

Steve Bruce was sacked by Newcastle with full £8m payoff after toxic atmosphere during Spurs defeat brought home need for immediate change to Saudi owners - with Paulo Fonseca and Roberto Martinez frontrunners for job

* Steve Bruce was sacked with an £8million pay-off after defeat by Tottenham
* It was reportedly the intention to sack the manager since the club's takeover
* An appointment for the new boss is expected to be made by the club this week
* Paulo Fonseca, Roberto Martinez and Lucien Favre are among those considered

Steve Bruce was sacked with an £8million pay-off on Wednesday after Newcastle’s Saudi owners acted in the wake of defeat in their first game at St James’ Park.

Sources say it was always the intention to replace the 60-year-old, but the performance and toxic atmosphere towards the end of the 3-2 loss to Tottenham brought home the need for immediate action.

They feared the team would struggle to pick up another point without a change and Graeme Jones has been placed in temporary charge for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace. Among those being considered as Bruce’s permanent replacement are Paulo Fonseca, Roberto Martinez, Lucien Favre, Eddie Howe and Rudi Garcia.

Newcastle have finally parted ways with Steve Bruce, who has left by 'mutual consent'

Talks are under way — Fonseca was in discussions on Wednesday — and an appointment is expected next week.

The presence of new chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan at Sunday’s game was said to be significant in accelerating the process to remove Bruce. Co-owner Amanda Staveley had made him aware of the nature of supporters’ chants calling for the manager to be sacked.

There was also concern among some around the consortium when Sportsmail revealed this week that captain Jamaal Lascelles and team-mate Isaac Hayden had to be pulled apart by staff after the game, leading to a sense of ‘dysfunction’ behind the scenes.

We understand Bruce left with his full £8m severance package — a legacy of previous owner Mike Ashley’s reign — and that he indicated he wanted to go, leading to a statement on Wednesday morning which used the phrase ‘mutual consent’.

It is thought that Bruce’s departure was met with relief among a significant section of the dressing room and, as of Wednesday night, only Allan Saint-Maximin had posted a message on social media in support of the head coach.

‘You are, without a doubt, one of the most gentle people that I have ever met in the world of football,’ he said. ‘You have been a man of your word, a caring man and a fair man who never hesitated to protect us. It has been an honour and a privilege to have you as a coach.’

It comes after Newcastle lost 3-2 at home to Tottenham on Sunday, with their new Saudi-led consortium watching on from the stands at St James' Park

Bruce, meanwhile, told The Telegraph in an interview on Wednesday: ‘I think this might be my last job. By the time I got to Newcastle, I thought I could handle everything thrown at me but it has been very, very tough.

‘To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail, to read people constantly saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a stupid, tactically inept cabbage head or whatever.’

Former Roma boss Fonseca, who came close to taking over at Spurs this summer, held talks on Wednesday with members of the club’s new-look hierarchy.

The 48-year-old is understood to have already started to put together strategies for the team’s forthcoming fixtures in the event of securing the job.
