HERRERA REMAINS BULLISH AND UPBEAT DESPITE PSG DEFEAT

Ander Herrera believes Manchester United are capable of winning in France and staging a comeback in the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

Thomas Tuchel’s Ligue 1 leaders earned a 2-0 first-leg win at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening thanks to second-half goals from defender Presnel Kimpembe and speedster Kylian Mbappe.

That result was undeniably disappointing and it unfortunately concluded an 11-match unbeaten run under the management of caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Herrera is frustrated by the goals that were conceded against PSG and he accepts we were not the better team, yet the Spaniard feels motivation can be sourced from recent high-profile away wins at Tottenham and Arsenal.

“I think the game was tight until the first goal,” Ander told us. “We couldn't say we were the better team, but they were not better than us either. It is difficult because against this kind of team, such a good team, you don't want to concede goal from corners. They didn't create any chances from open play in the first 60 to 65 minutes. The two chances they had were offside.

“But after the goal, they could play on the counter-attack and they have very quick players. They could build from the back, we were pressing quite well, so after the goal they could find those gaps that they couldn't in the first half. This is football - it is something to learn from. We cannot concede goals from set-pieces against this kind of team because everything becomes much harder.

“Now we have good examples. We won away against Tottenham, we won away against Arsenal. They are teams that are as good as PSG, so we will go there to make it difficult for them. But, right now, we have to think about the FA Cup against Chelsea and keep our position in the top four.”

Herrera went on to acknowledge the importance of remaining upbeat following the Champions League defeat to a PSG team that is viewed among the favourites to win this season’s competition. The Reds have obviously taken giant strides forward under Solskjaer and it is time to regroup.

“I think this result is not going to hurt us because of the way we lost,” Ander explained. “If you lost by being worse than the opponent then that can hurt us! They were not creating too many problems. We didn't either, to be honest, but 0-0 could have been an okay result because everything would be open. Now it is more difficult for us but, as I told you before, we have good examples.

“But we are not going to lose time thinking about what happened. Chelsea is a big game for us, away, and the FA Cup is a competition in which we lost the final last year - and deserved to win in my opinion. We have an opportunity to fight for the FA Cup and keep our position in the top four.”
