Default Re: Manchester United under Solskjaer

IAN LADYMAN: Manchester United's stars MUST work harder or it will cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job. There are fundamental flaws in the dressing room and the club is in drastic need of a mentality shift

* Manchester United were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday
* The devastating defeat was one of the worst results in the history of the club
* United sit 16th in the Premier League with just three points from three games
* Players like Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba can't keep going through long lulls

It is a little over 21 years now since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four times in 11 minutes as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 8-1. Unfortunately for the current United manager, his results tend to come in bursts too — for good and for bad.

Solskjaer's United are a team who tend to run either very hot or very cold — it's not a good sign.

After he took over from Jose Mourinho — architect of Solskjaer's misery at Old Trafford on Sunday — as caretaker in late 2018, a run of 14 wins in 17 games effectively secured the Norwegian the job.

United promptly lost their next game rather unjustly at Arsenal but then finished that season by winning just two of their last 12, losing eight.

Last season — Solskjaer's first full one — worked out in reverse. United beat Chelsea 4-0 on opening day and then won only two of their next 11.

Into the new year and buoyed by the signing of Bruno Fernandes and the emergence of Mason Greenwood, Solskjaer's side recovered to win 17 and lose only two of their final 25 games.

So this is where the occasional hope comes from. United can, and sometimes do, play like a very good football side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under huge pressure after his side were thrashed by Tottenham. United are capable of playing good football but they can also be astonishingly dismal

Under Solskjaer, they can suddenly hit their straps, get on a roll of confidence and sweep teams aside for periods of weeks and more.

Equally, the team can be astonishingly dismal. One defeat is not immediately forgotten about or learned from. Too often one quickly tends to lead to another and then misery sets in.

Players' shoulders slump, eyes focus on the ground and Solskjaer starts to look less like the homecoming hero and more like the little boy lost he first appeared to be when he walked through the gates of the Cliff back in 1996.

All this tells us quite a lot about the modern Manchester United and their manager.

It suggests that too many players are mentally unable to deal with the natural up and down rhythms of a long season and that when the dark days arrive, their manager does not have the experience of man-management — the know-how to help them through.

In an interview at the weekend, the Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku — resurgent at Inter Milan — claimed that the English were wrong to say he was lazy during his time at Old Trafford.

He is entitled to his claim, yet those who know will say that his levels of application at United were not always the best.

So why would a player try less hard at one club than at another? Is it because of the differences in team culture? Is it because of the manager? Is it simply because he can?

Certainly at United it is not unusual to see players go through extended lulls and then emerge to find new peaks. Less common is consistency of performance over a season. David de Gea, Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Nemanja Matic and Luke Shaw all fall into this category and that is too many.

David de Gea is one of a number of players who is guilty of going through extended lulls

Great teams have stellar days but relentless predictability and reliability is what underpins them. Last season, former Liverpool manager Roy Evans — an inhabitant of the Anfield boot room for most of his professional life — spoke of the need for what he called 'seven-out-of-10 players'. He referenced Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

Where are United's seven-out-of-10 players? Had a few of them been around on Sunday, they might still have lost to Tottenham but they would not have been embarrassed 6-1.

Clips from the Spurs mauling were informative. Pogba's clatter into Ben Davies at the end looked for all the world like a belated attempt to get his shorts dirty. Shaw's ugly hack at Lucas Moura seemed born of an apparent lack of interest in chasing him.

At really big clubs, dressing rooms do not tolerate things like this. Lessons are quickly taught and learned. At United, who do we imagine dishes out the rollickings? Maguire, the captain? Solskjaer?

Midfielder Paul Pogba is another player who's performances are anything but consistent

It all appears unlikely at a club that seems in need of the kind of shift in mentality that Mikel Arteta is bringing about at Arsenal.

Solskjaer has been in his role for almost two years, Arteta at his less than one.

At Old Trafford, signing marquee names like Edinson Cavani will not do anything to address the fundamental flaws in the dressing room.

The players need to work harder and think smarter. If they don't, it will eventually cost their young manager his job.

'This could be a game to kickstart season, they will take huge confidence': Rio Ferdinand thrilled as Manchester United deservedly beat last season's runners-up PSG in Champions League opener

* Marcus Rashford netted a late winner as Manchester United beat PSG
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were deserved winners in Paris on Tuesday evening
* Rio Ferdinand believes the result could be a turning point already for United
* Darren Fletcher and Owen Hargreaves were also complimentary of Utd's display

Rio Ferdinand was absolutely ecstatic with Manchester United's performance in their impressive victory over last season's finalists PSG on the opening night of the Champions League.

A brilliant late winner by Marcus Rashford - two years after he netted a last-minute penalty against the same opponents - in Paris meant Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side kicked-off their European campaign with a highly-deserved three points.

Ex-United defender Ferdinand emphasised how vital the result could be in the long-run for Solskjaer and his team, following an indifferent start to the season.

Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for Manchester United's display against PSG on Tuesday night

'Fantastic performance, the way they defended to a man and as a team, how compact they were, they stuck to their job and defended really well,' Ferdinand told BT Sport after the game.

'They were a threat on the counter, [Marcus] Rashford had three sniffs, but in the end he came up with the goods. The start of the season lots of negativity, this could be a game to kickstart season, they will take huge confidence as a collective.

'He [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] earned his paper today. Bring on [Paul] Pogba, changing up the system. The confidence they will gain will be huge for them ahead of a massive run of games.

'You have to reward performances like that [Tuanzebe], to play like that out of the cold, you deserve to be rewarded.

Ferdinand also commended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his selection calls on Tuesday night

'He [David De Gea] had a period where he was making mistakes, it wasn't just one game, but Ole backed him, so Ole deserves credit too.'

Bruno Fernandes, captaining his club for the first time, had given United the lead in the first-half following a re-taken penalty, but PSG - last season's runners-up - equalised after Anthony Martial headed into his own net from a corner in the 55th minute.

But amid an open finale to the contest, Rashford converted brilliantly into the corner to clinch the win and fellow former United man Darren Fletcher also thought the visitors were the better side on the night at the Parc des Princes.

'They started off with a back five, PSG came into the game second half, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quickly shifted and after that they were the better team,' Fletcher said.

David de Gea’s early contribution was vital for Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain

'They win the game with a fantastic strike from Rashford.'

Owen Hargreaves, another former United midfielder, added: 'It was top class. David De Gea made three world class saves, [Axel] Tuanzebe was the best centre back on the pitch.

'I loved the energy, that was top drawer. They looked fit tonight, every player outperformed PSG player, David De Gea looked top drawer, Bayern best team and have balance and great mix, United had great mix tonight.'

Ole menyiasati absennya Maguire dengan memainkan 3 bek + 2 bek sayap, apalagi Telles & Bissaka suka bantu naik menyerang. kemenangan buat modal vs Chelsea akhir pekan ini

'Speaking like we're in a relegation battle': Manchester United fans left dumbfounded at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 'ridiculous comment' after he played down their woeful start by claiming 'we didn't get our third win until the 10th game last year'

* Manchester United have not won at home in the Premier League this season
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side's fourth home league game saw defeat by Arsenal
* United have already lost to Crystal Palace and Tottenham and drew with Chelsea
* Solskjaer appeared to make light of the home form but fans were disgruntled

Manchester United fans have turned up the heat on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he appeared to try to make light of his side's atrocious start to the Premier League season.

United are yet to win a Premier League at Old Trafford this season, with a fourth home league game of the campaign ending in defeat by Arsenal, which followed losses to Crystal Palace and Tottenham and a goalless draw with Chelsea.

United have only two wins and are languishing in 15th in the table, but following defeat at the weekend, Solskjaer downplayed the crisis with reference to last season's poor start.

Manchester United fans have turned up the heat on boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their poor start to the Premier League season. The Norwegian's side have failed to win any of their first four home league games this term

He said: 'We need to get points on the board. We didn't get our third win until the 10th game last year, we've played six this year and have only two.'

However, United fans were stunned at the Norwegian boss' negative post-match comments and believed they were unbecoming for a club of their stature, with the club suffering their worst start to a season at home since 1973.

One fan replied that the comments were not of a manager in charge of a club with lofty ambitions, writing: 'Speaking like we're in a relegation battle.'

Other Twitter users agreed, with one adding: 'No way mannn, that's a Championship level manager comment', while another said: 'This is something Fulham's manager should be saying in hope to avoid relegation.'

One other user also concurred, adding: 'This is Manchester United btw, not Cardiff City'.

Solskjaer made a comparison to last season afterwards which did not go down well with fans

Another meanwhile tore into their lowered expectations, writing: 'Oh ! God help me with this kind of ridiculous comment by the manager, 4m the third biggest club in the world. Is our club standard 60 points Woodward? Just asking. Is this the mandate now?'

Others were similarly left aghast, and questioned Solskjaer's future at the club, with one writing: 'He's managed to lower expectations yet again. If people took off their red tinted glasses they would see he's out of his depth.'

Another agreed, and called for former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to be brought in, adding: 'He simply needs to go. He is like a broken boiler. It keeps breaking down and eventually you will have to replace it.

'Ole needs to go whilst Pochetino is still available. I am really angry.'

A Twitter user also referred to this period of Solskjaer being in charge as a waste of time, stating: 'Can delude yourselves for as long as you want but ultimately we're never going to get where we want to with Ole in charge.

'Just delaying the inevitable and considering how open the league is this year, why waste time?

Many other users were also left infuriated, with one adding Solskjaer's comment was not dissimilar from what former boss David Moyes would have said, while another added: 'This is the guy supposed to be rebuilding this club. Tf is he rebuilding ???'

The comments from the club's faithful come after former United captain Roy Keane claimed the players will end up costing Solskjaer his job.

Many have questioned Solskjaer's future and have called for Mauricio Pochettino to come in

'Ole will pay the ultimate price,' Keane told Sky Sports. 'Ole will lose his job working with this group of players as sure as night follows day.

'We all like Ole, he's a decent guy, but he will be under no illusion that the pressure now will be building the longer this goes on.

'I never thought United would get anywhere near Liverpool or Manchester City, forget that, but at this rate they are in no race. They are just drifting.

'We were kind of building this season up to be make or break for Ole. At this moment in time it's not looking good for him.'

Roy Keane also believes the United players will end up costing his former team-mate his job

'You don't just turn up and get three points in the Champions League... we weren't good enough and that's it': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts Manchester United's complacency after his side slump to Istanbul Basaksehir defeat

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slammed his side's performance at Istanbul Basaksehir
* Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Champions League new boys
* Solskjaer's side were the overwhelming favourites to win the group game
* The United boss admitted it was hard to be positive after the performance

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slammed his side's complacency after they were beaten by Champions League new boys Istanbul Basakesehir.

United were the overwhelming favourites going into the game after beating last year's finalists Paris Saint-Germain and thrashing RB Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford last week.

But some poor defending saw Solskjaer's side slip to an unlikely defeat and the manager was not impressed with the performance of his side.

'The performance wasn’t good enough,' said Solskjaer.

'Against a team that worked and ran and well they hit us on the break a couple of times and score a coupe of goals like you sometimes doing Europe when you don’t defend well enough.

'We play a short corner and forget about the man up top and that’s unforgivable and of course the second one as well we’re not very well organised to counter press and win the ball back when we play in.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slammed his side's complacency on Wednesday. Solskjaer said his team can't expect to turn up and get three points in the Champions League

'Two soft goals to giveaway and then we didn’t have enough to comeback second half. We had 45 minutes to save something from the game - we threw everything at it but couldn’t break them down.'

'It's set us back a lot (the defeats against Arsenal and Basaksehir), you get a reality check every time you play football here.

'Nothing becomes history quicker than a game of football. You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League that’s shown here today.

'We have played against lots of good individuals in a good teams and we weren’t good enough that’s it.

'It’s not easy to be positive now of course it isn’t when you’ve just lost the way you did but these players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday morning to get going again.'

United defended poorly and were then unable to break down a stubborn Basaksehir side. Demba Ba (left) gave the hosts the lead when he was left unmarked following a United corner

Basaksehir took the lead in the 12th minute when United lost the ball from their own corner. The ball was cleared up to Demba Ba, who had been left all on his own on the halfway line, and the striker was able to sprint through on goal to finish past Dean Henderson.

Edin Visca made it 2-0 in the 40th minute before Anthony Martial pulled a goal back just before half-time.

But United managed just one more shot on target in the second half as they struggled to break down a stubborn Basaksehir side.

Solskjaer will now take his side to Goodison Park to face Everton, who are looking to get back to winning ways after defeats against Southampton and Newcastle.

Kasihan nih Ole..
Sekarang sepertinya setiap United kalah sepertinya langsung bergema #oleout di medsos yaa..

Dulu selama belasan tahun saya nonton United era Sir Alex kalau lagi kalah ya biasa-biasa saja, paling cuma bilang "United lagi sial atau tidak beruntung saja". Beda masa memang beda kelakuan fans, hehehe...

Default Re: Manchester United under Solskjaer

Don't be fooled by Manchester United... Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tried to develop a siege mentality, but his team are totally unconvincing

* Manchester United got an important win, but it was not particularly convincing
* Everton were awful defensively at Goodison Park as they threw away a lead
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not be able to rebuild the trust with just one win

Harry Maguire hollered his delight and raised his fists in celebration. On the touchline, the joy of Manchester United’s captain was mirrored by the coaching staff, who swapped hugs and high fives.

A testing week had ended with a result in keeping with United’s traditions — a 3-1 win at an often inhospitable Goodison Park.

It had historical connotations, too, as this seventh consecutive away triumph in the Premier League equalled the best sequence set by Sir Alex Ferguson’s first thrilling champions in 1993.

There was another nod to the past when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a leaf out of his old manager’s book and took issue with the scheduling of the lunchtime kick-off, hissing about how everything had been set up for United ‘to fail’ following a draining midweek Champions League trip to Istanbul.

As he tries to plot a way forward, Solskjaer evidently wants to get his squad believing it is them against the world. He saw Ferguson do it time and again and nobody could blame the current manager for wanting to emulate United’s grand master.

The trouble was, none of it was convincing; neither the performance on the pitch that had Maguire screaming, ‘Get in!’, nor the tantrum from Solskjaer that was aimed at the TV companies. He said he’d had concerns for a month about the timing, so why didn’t he raise them publicly then?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has a lot of work to do to get Manchester United in shape this season. The Manchester United players were happy with the win, but it was unconvincing overall

Plenty will be in a hurry to take this success on Merseyside as a sign that United are ready to motor forward and get involved in the race for the top four. As evidence, they will point to the input of Bruno Fernandes — whose two goals turned around a deficit — and cite Maguire’s robust display.

Do not fall into that trap. Everton were wretched. Their defensive efforts left Carlo Ancelotti exasperated and bewildered. They took the lead through a fine Bernard strike but are not playing with the zest of the opening weeks and they gave United their three goals.

‘We have to improve,’ warned Ancelotti, whose side have taken one point from the last 12. ‘This period has been really bad but it is gone. The next period I hope will be better. It has to be better.’

Yet Everton still had ample opportunity to inflict significant damage, so when you watched those United celebrations at the end it was impossible not to think about the coruscating words that Roy Keane unleashed after their 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal six days earlier.

‘They react for a few weeks, then they get carried away with themselves and think, “We’re a team now”,’ the former captain said on Sky. ‘I’d love to be sitting here and say they look like a great bunch of lads, but my eyes don’t lie to me.’

Keane has this right. The make-up of Solskjaer’s squad means you wouldn’t trust them if they told you tomorrow was Tuesday. Of course they have some gifted footballers and will win plenty of matches, but would you put your last £20 on them to win their next five League games? No way.

The sequence facing them after the international break is West Brom (home), Southampton (away), West Ham (away), Manchester City (home) and Sheffield United (away). There are also their three remaining Champions League group fixtures.

It is a pivotal sequence and, while the backslapping and congratulating suggest they believe they turned a corner at Goodison Park, what they showed in the 90 minutes that preceded the happy scene was far from compelling. United did not make you feel they are back.

‘If we have this mindset for every single game, we’ll be hard to play against,’ argued Solskjaer. ‘I can’t praise the boys enough for the character that they’ve shown. I didn’t want to do it (talk about the schedule) before the game, as I don’t want to start giving them excuses.’

Excuses? When Ferguson created a siege mentality during Solskjaer’s days as a player, he knew with certainty that nobody in the dressing room would make excuses. He had a squad who would run through brick walls and knew their character could never be called into question.

The very fact Solskjaer said he didn’t want to give this group excuses tells you he still doubts them. Everyone does.

The players may have felt pleased with themselves that they had come up with three points — which were clinched by Edinson Cavani’s first United goal — when their manager needed it.

But until they have put a proper sequence of results together, the rest of us will remain sceptical.

You don’t regain trust with one win. You don’t celebrate like you have solved the puzzle after one win, either.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists 'the group is still very open' as Manchester United boss refuses to take anything for granted despite his side needing just one point from two clashes to secure Champions League progression

* Manchester United need one more point to progress in the Champions League
* The Red Devils pulled off a comprehensive 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is not taking anything for granted this season
* United face two remaining matches; against PSG at home and Leipzig away

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not taking progress to the Champions League knockout phase for granted despite Manchester United's important victory against Istanbul Basaksehir.

Bruno Fernandes' brace added to by Marcus Rashford's penalty and a late goal from substitute Daniel James saw United to a 4-1 triumph which means Solskjaer's side only need a point from their final two matches to qualify for the last 16.

But next week's home match against PSG and the trip to Leipzig means the manager is not getting ahead of himself.

'The group is still very open,' the Norwegian said.

'We've got nine, two on six points (PSG and RB Leipzig) and Basaksehir on three, so we still need points to go through.

'One probably should be enough and three probably gives you the win, so hopefully against PSG we can secure the points we need but that's another matter.

United ran riot at Old Trafford and now need just one point to progress from the groups. Solskajer insists the group remains 'very open' and United will take nothing for granted

'Of course I thought the whole team played really well. We found our positions and the tempo with the ball was really good.

'We deserved the win, of course, after that first half. Second half is always different and more difficult to keep the tempo when you're winning 3-0.'

Solskjaer' also had no problems with Fernandes handing over the penalty to Rashford when he could have bagged a hat-trick.

The midfield talisman selflessly allowed Rashford to take the limelight, before the England international stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The Norwegian told BT Sport: 'Marcus is a very good penalty taker and Bruno is very confident, if Bruno wants to give it to Marcus then why not?

'Anthony Martial took one against Leipzig too - why not share it around?' he added.

Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan rips into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Manchester United's defeat by PSG, saying he 'represents mediocrity' and will only ever win the League Cup... and calls for boss 'to get his coat' and leave Old Trafford

* Manchester Utd's European hopes hang in the balance after defeat against PSG
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will need a result against Red Bull Leipzig next week
* Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan insists Solskjaer is not good enough
* Jordan called on Solskjaer to leave the club, believing he 'represents mediocrity'

Manchester United should not have handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the managerial reigns as he 'represents mediocrity' and the Norwegian should 'get his coat' and leave Old Trafford, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has insisted.

After taking over on a caretaker basis in December 2018, Solskjaer signed a three-year contract in March 2019, but the 18 months since have seen constant fluctuations in form.

United lost 3-1 at home to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night, meaning they almost certainly still need a result on the final matchday against RB Leipzig next week to qualify for the knockout stages - and Jordan believes Solskjaer is not up to the required standards to be United boss.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under fire again after his United side lost to PSG on Wednesday night. PSG's victory at Old Trafford means United's hopes of qualification go down to the wire. Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan says Solskjaer should 'get his coat' and leave United

'I wouldn't have employed him in the first place because I think he represents mediocrity,' Jordan told talkSPORT.

'He is a thoroughly decent football person, but Manchester United don't need a thoroughly decent football person, they need an excellent football person that is capable of taking them to the next level...

'We are now two years - not two minutes, not twenty games - two years into a tenure where he got a pass at the back end of last season, which has distorted the view of what Manchester United really are.

'They are a very average side with some very highly-priced footballers that aren't performing at the level that Manchester United should be performing at.'

Solskjaer was criticised by fans online for not substituting Fred before he received a red card. Jordan believes Solskjaer will win nothing meaningful besides a League Cup as United boss

Solskjaer, in particular, was criticised by fans online for not substituting Fred against PSG before he was sent-off in the 71st minute.

The Brazilian midfielder had already escaped a red card in the first-half for a head-butt on Leandro Paredes and received a second yellow card straight after PSG scored their second goal, for a reckless tackle on ex-United man Ander Herrera.

When asked by host Jim White what Solskjaer should be doing differently, Jordan stated that he should leave the club, as he won't 'win anything meaningful besides 'maybe a League Cup.'

'I don't think he should be doing anything besides getting his coat,' Jordan said.

'I have seen nothing, besides a few games at the back end of last season to tell me that this guy is going to catch [Jurgen] Klopp, this guy is going to catch [Pep] Guardiola, this guy is going to win anything meaningful besides maybe a League cup.'

United, PSG and RB Leipzig are all on nine points going into matchday six, but with a superior goal-difference and head-to-head record to the German side, a draw will be enough for United to progress to the next stage.

Solskjaer's side next face West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday evening in the Premier League, where the Red Devils have the chance to leapfrog their opponents who are a point ahead in the table.

'It's not a disaster': Phil Neville DEFENDS Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and says there is a 'total witch-hunt' to get him the sack at Manchester United - even after their embarrassing Champions League exit

* Phil Neville has given backing to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The Red Devils suffered a 3-2 defeat at RB Leipzig and exited Champions League
* Solskjaer is coming under increasing scrutiny but Neville says criticism is unfair

Phil Neville has given his backing to Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the club crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage.

The Red Devils suffered a 3-2 defeat away at RB Leipzig on Wednesday night when they needed just a point to reach the knockout stages of the elite European competition.

United have struggled for consistency this season - they lost to Istanbul Basaksehir after beating both RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain in their opening games in Group H - and Solskjaer is coming under increasing scrutiny.

Wednesday's defeat saw them exit the Champions League and enter the Europa League instead and Neville, who played with Solskjaer for nine years at Old Trafford, defended his former team-mate saying there is a 'total witch-hunt' to get him the sack at United.

'If United win on Saturday [against Manchester City] – and Ole's teams tend to do well in big moments, I think Saturday is a big moment for the manager and for the players,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

'They played poorly in the first 30 minutes, they got punished in a group which was really really difficult and they're out of the competition. They're now in the Europa League, they've got to go out and win that.

'The narrative from inside the club is far, far different to that outside the club, where it seems there's a total witch-hunt to get this boy out of the job.'

United face rivals Manchester City on Saturday evening with the club in need of a positive result. The Red Devils are one point ahead of Pep Guardiola's side prior to the mouth-watering clash.

Despite falling short of expectations, Neville has insisted that United's Champions League exit 'is not a disaster' and that Solskjaer receives unfair criticism.

'There's an awful narrative where the minute United lose a game it seems like a disaster,' he added.

'It's not a disaster tonight, but it's disappointing. United wanted to be in the last 16.

'There are Manchester United teams in the past with better managers than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – like Sir Alex Ferguson – which have gone out at this stage. It does happen, it has happened.

'It's quite a freakish time at the moment. There are managers in the Premier League who are below United in the league but have great reputations and don't get the stick Solskjaer gets.'

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand urged his old club to think up 'a strategy of playing consistently' following Wednesday's disappointing outcome.

Solskjaer's side found themselves 2-0 down inside 13 minutes with Leipzig extending their lead in the second half. A penalty from Bruno Fernandes and a header from Paul Pogba in the final 10 minutes set up an exciting finale but United ultimately left themselves with too much to do.
