Default United defender under Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to move for a new central defender to shore up Manchester United's defence… but will Kalidou Koulibaly, Issa Diop or Toby Alderweireld make the move?

* Jose Mourinho wanted to sign a new centre back in the summer transfer window
* Portuguese boss was sacked last Tuesday with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over
* The interim boss is set to move for centre half to shore up Man United's defence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to move for a new centre half to shore up Manchester United's defence.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho made it clear he wanted a new centre back in the summer but he did not get his wish.

The Portuguese boss was sacked last Tuesday with former United striker Solskjaer taking his place until the end of the season.

Here Sportsmail weighs up some of the options studied by United's scouting department ahead of the January transfer window.

KALIDOU KOULIBALY

Napoli

Value: £90m

The Napoli defender that most of Europe's elite clubs want in their ranks. Koulibaly is happy at the Serie A side and won't be allowed to leave in January unless a ridiculous bid is received. United have tried to lure him to England in the past.

Kalidou Koulibaly is happy at Napoli and Manchester United tried to sign him previously

NIKOLA MILENKOVIC

Fiorentina

Value: £45m

The 6ft 3in defender can play at centre back or right back. Hailed as the next Nemanja Vidic, the 21-year-old has great potential but is still considered a bit raw.

Nikola Milenkovic (right) has been hailed as the next Nemanja Vidic but he is a bit raw

OZAN KABAK

Galatasaray

Value: £6.7m

The 18-year-old centre back only made his first-team debut earlier this year but has quickly established himself as a regular under manager Fatih Terim. His potential has alerted United and other top European clubs who have established that Kabak has a £6.7million release clause despite Galatasaray valuing the teenager at £20m.

EDER MILITAO

Porto

Value: £40m

The 20-year-old only joined Porto last summer from Sao Paulo after initially being considered by Manchester City earlier in the year. Militao is understood to have the same agents as David Luiz and Willian. He can play right back and defensive midfield and has already been capped by Brazil.

MILAN SKRINIAR

Inter Milan

Value: £90m

The 23-year-old Slovakian has still to agree terms on a new deal and his reputation is growing. Skriniar has United, Juventus and Barcelona as admirers after once being targeted by Tony Pulis for West Brom.

HARRY MAGUIRE

Leicester City

Value: £75million

The 25-year-old is highly rated by Leicester and they don't wish to sell the England international in January. United tried last summer but the price was too high. Maguire is keen to play for a top club though he would cost close to a British record fee.

Leicester do not want to sell Harry Maguire but the defender is keen to play for a top side

ISSA DIOP

West Ham

Value: £60m

The 21-year-old former Toulouse captain helped West Ham beat United in October. Youth may work against him being the immediate choice and West Ham would want to treble their £22m summer outlay.

Issa Diop helped West Ham beat United but youth may work against him being instant choice

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD

Tottenham Hotspur

Value: £45m

The Belgium international's deal runs out in June but Tottenham have an option to extend with a £25m release clause then kicking in for a two-week period. United have long been credited with an interest but have not followed up any enquiries.

Manchester United have long been credited with an interest in Spurs' Toby Alderweireld

ALESSIO ROMAGNOLI

AC Milan

Value: £55m

Milan's captain was wanted by Chelsea last summer and is on United's radar. Stylish and left-footed, he could give United the balance they crave but would still take time to adjust to the English top flight.

Alessio Romagnoli is stylish and left-footed but may take time to settle in the Premier League

JEAN-CLAIR TODIBO

Toulouse

Value: £20m/Free

Though not as polished as another teenager that United like, Ajax's Matthias de Ligt, Todibo is considerably cheaper. The 18-year-old replaced Diop at Toulouse and has not agreed a professional contract at the club, alerting league rivals such as Liverpool and Wolves.

'Defensively we're doing really well': Romelu Lukaku believes Luke Shaw has been Manchester United's player of the season as he hails back line

* Romelu Lukaku thinks Luke Shaw is Manchester United's player of the season
* He also hailed the turnaround of the club's defence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Under the caretaker boss, United have conceded nine goals in 14 games
* Gary Neville feels United could face a 'mutiny' should they not give him the job

Romelu Lukaku believes Luke Shaw has been Manchester United's player of the season as he hailed the turnaround of the defence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has proven a popular appointment since replacing Jose Mourinho in December, winning 11 of his first 14 games.

A return to the attacking brand of football that was abandoned under Mourinho has earned Solskjaer plenty of plaudits but four clean sheets in their last four domestic games has proven there is a newfound defensive solidity too.

Romelu Lukaku has hailed the turnaround in Manchester United's defence in recent weeks. The Belgian striker also insisted Luke Shaw (above) has been the player of the season so far. Solskjaer has earned plenty of plaudits for four clean sheets in their last four domestic games

Under Solskjaer, United have conceded just nine goals in 14 games in all competitions. That is a vast improvement on the 35 in 24 let in under Mourinho towards the end of his tenure.

Solskajer has also won 50 per cent of United's 52 Premier League points in just 10 games. Mourinho needed 17 games to reach the 26-point mark before he was shown the door at Old Trafford.

That improvement was praised by Lukaku, who even went as fair as to name Shaw his player of the season already.

'That's what Ole wants,' said Lukaku. 'Everybody is talking about us being offensively really good, but defensively we're doing really well.

'Chris Smalling coming in for the last couple of games has been brilliant and Luke Shaw has been the best player of the season for me.

'Ashley Young has been consistent and David de Gea is the best No 1 in the world. From the midfield to the front, we try to help out and make sure the defence has an easy task. We did that [against Liverpool] and it was all about the team.

'You always want to win these type of games, but for us it was about being mentally strong, having had players injured. We had to be resilient.'

Gary Neville feels United face the prospect of a 'mutiny' should they decide against giving Solskjaer the job on a permanent basis.

'Three months ago if it was 0-0 at home they would have been singing "attack, attack, attack",' Neville told Sky Sports after the match.

'They were singing "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer" all of the second half. The mood has completely transformed.

'He has the crowd with him. I think at this moment in time if you're the board you are not in a position where you could give it to someone else, I think there would be a mutiny.

'The fans love him. They were getting behind the team in the second-half but mostly they were singing for him.'

Solskjaer has a long-standing relationship with the club having represented them as a player.

He has only one defeat to his name as United boss so far - the 2-0 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Default Re: United defender under Solskjaer

New centre backs are no longer a priority for Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tightening of the defence set to save club £50m

* Manchester United delighted at defensive progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The club no longer feel they need to spend £50million on a new centre-back
* Since taking over, Solskjaer's side are second to Liverpool on goals conceded

Manchester United believe the progress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made at Old Trafford could save them more than £50million on a new centre back this summer.

Solskjaer has restored United's attacking identity since taking over as caretaker boss, leading the club into contention for a top-four finish and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

But the former United striker has also massively improved the team's defensive record on the way to winning 14 of his 19 games in charge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen a great transformation in Manchester United's defence. The club would have paid £100m for a player of the calibre of Real Madrid star Raphael Varane

Since Solskjaer returned to the club, United are second in the Premier League to Liverpool based on goals conceded and clean sheets. That compares to 16th when Mourinho was axed in December.

The Portuguese coach made no secret of his desire to bring in a new centre back despite United spending a combined £61m on Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly while he was manager.

Indeed, Mourinho's demand for the club to sign an experience central defender such as Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng or Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham last summer became a major factor in his deteriorating relationship with the Old Trafford hierarchy.

United sources insisted they would have paid £100m for a player of the calibre of Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, but were reluctant to spend £50m on Boateng or Alderweireld when both players were about to turn 30 and had questionable injury records.

However, the success of Solskjaer and his coaching team in tightening up the defence over the last three months means that buying a new centre back this summer is no longer a priority.

Instead United are more likely to invest the money in other positions, such as a new right back and central midfielder, happy in the knowledge that Solskjaer is getting the best out of the central defenders at his disposal.

Goals against

Lindelof - 12 (in 14 appearances) Jones - 5 (in 8 appearances) Smalling - 3 (in 5 appearances) Bailly - 4 (in 4 appearances) Darmian - 0 (in 1 appearance)
No-one has benefitted more than Lindelof, practically written off under Mourinho, who has become the cornerstone of United's defence and played in 16 of Solskjaer's 19 games.

The Swede has been more commanding and composed, forming effective partnerships with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Bailly. United's other centre back, Marcos Rojo, has not played since sustaining a shin injury in Mourinho's penultimate game away to Valencia.

Lindelof paid tribute to the impact Solskjaer has made on the team, saying: 'Since he arrived, he and the staff around him have been talking lots in training about the things we want to improve and how we want to play.

'That's very important for a player to know exactly what your coach wants. Then it's easier to go out on the pitch and do that. It's always good to have a structure and a plan you're working towards.

'He knows the club very well and that was one of the first things he said to us; identity might be a good word to use, but I think he's been very clear what he wants from us and what type of football he wants us to play.

'He spoke to me and told me to do the things that I'm good at, to show my abilities and to express myself on the pitch. That was very nice to hear.'

It is one of the reasons Solskjaer will be rewarded with a long-term contract at United with the club close to confirming his appointment on a permanent basis.

'If he gets the job, I will be pleased,' added Lindelof. 'It's not my job to decide in the end but, of course, I'm very happy with the things that he has done since he's arrived. I have nothing bad to say about him.

'He's a legend of the club so he knows everything about being here as a player. When he speaks you always listen. He knows what he's talking about because he has been through it all. That's also a very good thing to have.'

Making room for Maguire: Man United will ditch a centre half if they get £90m Leicester defender over the line... so, with Lindelof, Bailly, Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Tuanzebe fighting for places, who goes?

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has six central defenders on Man United's pre-season tour
* Boss has confirmed at least one will have to go if they sign Harry Maguire
* Axel Tuanzebe is back after loan at Villa and boss says he can't wait to see more
* Fred, Matteo Darmian and Dean Henderson will join up with squad in Singapore

Manchester United will sell one of their centre backs if they succeed in signing Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

The two clubs remain in negotiations over Maguire with Leicester holding out for up to £90million for the England international.

United have taken six central defenders on tour – Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe – and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that at least one will have to go if Maguire signs.

'Of course, there's a limit of players,' he said. 'Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn't has a fight to get back in. There's been loads of speculation but I can't really say anything. We'll work to find a relationship with the ones we've got.'

Asked if Tuanzebe will be part of his plans after helping Aston Villa win promotion last season, Solskjaer added: 'He has a great chance of staying here and playing. He had a great season last year.

'He's really proven he can play at that level and he's come back strong and focused. He did well in the first game here (against Perth Glory) and he's one of the exciting players I can't wait to see more of.'

Solskjaer confirmed that Fred, Matteo Darmian and Dean Henderson will join up with the rest of the squad on the next leg of the tour in Singapore.

TOO MANY CENTRE BACKS - SO WHO FACES THE CHOP AT OLD TRAFFORD?

Victor Lindelof, 24

Having emerged as United's most-reliable first choice last season, Lindelof is likely to be a key figure under Solskjaer again. Says he is 'very, very happy' in Manchester.

Eric Bailly

Three years on from his £30m arrival, Bailly has been seen at his best all-too-rarely at United through injury and mixed form. Maguire would knock him down the pecking order.

Phil Jones, 27

Oft-derided, but Jones has now been at United eight years. His position will be under question though, as a relatively sell-able asset given his age and home-grown status.

Chris Smalling, 29

The longest-serving of the current first-team crop, Smalling only signed a new contract back in December but his position would be marginalised if Maguire joins the squad.

Marcos Rojo, 29

United failed to jettison the out-of-favour Rojo last season - partly impacting their pursuit of a new defender. Unlikely to be needed after Maguire's potential arrival.

Axel Tuanzebe, 21

Solskjaer has talked up the 21-year-old's chances of staying at Old Trafford this summer, hailing his impact at Aston Villa. He's also just signed a new deal.
He has been encouraged by what he has seen in the first two weeks of pre-season as United build up to their opening game at home to Chelsea on August 11.

'When you coach or manage a team there are so many little things that can make a big difference,' added Solskjaer. 'Working on fitness, new tactical ideas, getting the players ready and involved, creating a team. This is about us as a team, the team ethos we always had as a foundation and luckily we've got a pre-season, so far two weeks.

'Rom (Lukaku) has missed a few training sessions, Anthony (Martial) has missed one, but everyone's quite fit and when we start the league we want everyone fit to play.

'I've just been encouraged by the whole pre-season and they've showed me they want to be part of us and looking forward to the next few weeks until August 11.'

Default Re: United defender under Solskjaer

Chris Smalling has been reborn in the Eternal City of Rome - with twice as many goals and twice as many clean sheets as £80m Harry Maguire (who took his place at Manchester United)

* Chris Smalling put on a show with a goal and two assists in victory over Brescia
* The English defender has adapted well at Roma since moving on a loan deal
* While he thrives out in Italy, parent club Manchester United struggle defensively
* Statistically, he is performing better than £80m man Harry Maguire this season
* Inter Milan, Juventus and Roma are all said to be keen to sign him next summer

As Chris Smalling stole the show with a goal and two assists at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday to pile further misery on rock bottom Brescia, 1,200 miles away in Yorkshire his parent club fell to pieces.

Phil Jones, a regular room-mate of Smalling's when they were both at Man United, was being made to look amateurish by Sheffield United. Lys Mousset was making a mockery of a back three costing in the region of £130million in Jones, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

And so United fans would be forgiven if they have had even one eye on events in Rome, for promoting the idea of Smalling's return.

Chris Smalling (middle) is enjoying a new lease of life while out on loan in Italy with Roma

His move to Italy represented something of a gamble for a player out of favour for club and country. But few can argue with the renaissance he is enjoying in the Eternal City.

The move was arguably overlooked initially as being not largely significant, not one that would make a telling impact long-term. Gianluca Mancini, a talented 23-year-old, was recruited and Roma were linked all summer long with moves for Dejan Lovren and Toby Alderweireld. Even Juventus defender Daniele Rugani was on the radar.

In the end Smalling arrived for a loan fee of £2.5m. There are now plenty on the boisterous Curva Sud still baffled at their good fortune in landing him for a pittance.

After all, his goal to open the scoring against Brescia, a smart header from an outswinging corner by Lorenzo Pellegrini, saw him make history.

His second of the campaign makes him the first Englishman since David Beckham in 2008-09 to score two goals in the same Serie A season.

Only Inter Milan can match the 11 goals from set-pieces scored by Roma so far this season. With an aerial threat like Smalling in their ranks, the club's No 1 ranking comes as no surprise.

Dubbed 'Il Migliore' (The Best) in Monday's Gazzetto della Sport after his goal and two assists earned a 7.5 rating, Smalling is winning plaudits for his defending again. When did that last happen in England?

He's smiling again, happy with his development and back in front of a fan-base desperate not to see him leave.

Smalling, much like compatriot Kieran Trippier, took a gamble in swapping the comforts of home in England for a new challenge abroad. The 30-year-old chose Italy while Trippier chose Spain, both with the intention of improving their defending and proving they are still worthy of places in the England national team.

It has been two years since England boss Gareth Southgate looked to have extinguished Smalling's career with the Three Lions. The former Fulham and United defender last got a call-up for the World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania and Slovenia in October 2017.

A subtle dig at his inability to build chances from the back, the way John Stones and Maguire are credited as being able to, was what sparked his initial omission. He has never returned to the set-up since.

But few in Europe are defending as well as Smalling is right now.

There was a moment in a recent 2-1 win over Napoli where Smalling's intervention ended any debate over whether he had adapted to life outside of England.

A free-kick from the left was floated to the back post and as Giovanni Di Lorenzo out-jumped Aleksandar Kolarov, the Napoli right back was ready to wheel away in celebration as his effort flew towards the bottom corner.

The goalkeeper was beaten but Smalling was unwilling to give up the chase and at full stretch, produced an acrobatic bicycle kick to hack the ball clear.

He was overlooked when he first moved by fans but has quickly become a favourite in Rome. Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has made Smalling his on-field leader as he excels in their defence. Per 90 minutes, Smalling is thriving compared to those back at parent club Manchester United

Anybody sleeping on the Manchester United loanee suddenly snapped out of their slumber. Smalling is a fine defender and is proving his doubters wrong in style.

He is said to be picking up the language on the field, with the help of English-speaking team-mates such as former Manchester City pair Kolarov and Edin Dzeko, in a bid to maximise his role as a leader in this side.

And under the guidance of boss Paulo Fonseca, a manager trusting in him to be the bedrock of the Giallorossi's rearguard, Smalling is being allowed to focus on the art of defending.

The slower pace of Serie A, not a slant on the division or of Smalling's achievements, is down largely to the greater emphasis placed on tactics.

It suits a player whose reading of the game is unquestionable. He is being tasked by Fonseca to dictate and be a leader alongside the much younger Mancini and the benefits are translating into tangible results.

Roma, who finished a disappointing sixth in 2018-19 are currently fourth, are ahead of Atalanta and Napoli now, both of whom qualified ahead of them in the Champions League spots last season.

And so the former Shakhtar Donetsk boss has brought progress, with Smalling as his on-field general at the back.

The often topsy-turvy transition football fans witness each week in the Premier League can leave defenders exposed.

Take Sheffield United's opener on Sunday when Mousset, hassling a back-tracking Jones one v one before the United man ended up on his backside, soon had a clear run at goal before pulling back for John Fleck to score.

This was a player Smalling used to partner at the back. Room with. Confide in.

When confidence dips, it can become nothing short of a nightmare. A fresh start was one of the best decisions Smalling has ever made, even if part of him misses Manchester.

'I do [miss Man United],' Smalling said in a recent talkSPORT interview, 'because I was there for so many years and I was used to be being part of the furniture there.

'But I am enjoying my new chapter, and hopefully I can keep affecting performances on the pitch and we can have a successful season. I'm really enjoying being in Italy.'

That's where United are now, shy of any belief they can go into a match and keep a clean sheet. Shy of any belief that the defenders will not make a costly mistake.

Take £80m summer signing Maguire, the arrival which paved the way for Smalling to depart for Rome.

Harry Maguire, an £80m signing last summer, is producing less per 90 minutes than Smalling. His future at United remains unclear once his loan spell ends, but Roma are keen to keep him

Per 90 minutes this season, Smalling has made more headed clearances, won more tackles, more aerial duels, earned more clean sheets and produced more interceptions than the most expensive defender in world football.

Maguire has created more chances per game, adding weight to Southgate's sentiments about shortcomings in Smalling's creation - a criticism he continues to argue to the contrary.

His path to winning a Euro 2020 spot appears to be blocked, no matter how well he performs but the Italian job Smalling took on is likely to earn him a promotion, in or out of Manchester.

Those who thought he was finished when he walked out of the door at Old Trafford this summer could not be more wrong.

'Harry Maguire, with his lack of pace, can get caught': Paul Scholes tells Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to sign a defensive partner 'like Jaap Stam or Rio Ferdinand' for the Man United captain in defence

* Paul Scholes wants Man United to buy a new defender to partner Harry Maguire
* The United captain got caught out for Bournemouth's opener on Saturday
* Scholes says that Maguire needs someone with pace to cover him
* The United icon said that his former club are two signings away from Liverpool

Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United need a key defensive signing to partner Harry Maguire as the Old Trafford icon set out the two areas the club needs additions to challenge Liverpool for the title.

Maguire was caught out for Bournemouth's shock opening goal in the 5-2 win at Old Trafford on Saturday, as Junior Stanislas produced a neat piece of skill to bypass the £80million signing before firing beyond David de Gea.

Despite United being almost faultless since the Premier League restart, the 27-year-old has come under the spotlight for a couple of defensive errors, with Roy Keane blasting him for his role in Steven Bergwijn's goal in the game against Spurs.

And Scholes, who spent 20 years at United, believes that his former club needs to sign a defender with pace to partner up with Maguire if United want to challenge Liverpool, the runaway league winners this season.

'There is a big gap to close, there's no doubt about that,' Scholes told BBC Radio Five Live.

'The points difference is ridiculous and the quality of Man City obviously is there for everyone to see.

'I really don't think they are a million miles away. I know we spoke about four or five players but I think it's two or three now.

Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United need a new partner for Harry Maguire. The captain was caught out for Bournemouth's opener at Old Trafford on Saturday. The United icon highlighted that Maguire needs a defensive partner with pace beside him. Scholes added that Maguire needs a player like Rio Ferdinand to cover for his lack of pace

'I think you are looking at a centre-forward, a really classy goal scorer and possibly a centre-half to play next to [Harry] Maguire.

'I think [Victor] Lindelof has done alright but I just think Maguire with his lack of pace at times [can get caught].

'If he's got a really dominant centre-half next to him like a Rio Ferdinand or Jaap Stam, who bullies centre-forwards, I think that would be a big help to the team.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are in a good position to secure Champions League football next season. They occupy fifth position, which would be enough to qualify should Manchester City's ban from the competition be upheld.

United are next in action on Thursday when they travel to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa, who are struggling in the relegation places.

Default Re: United defender under Solskjaer

Manchester United 'have Nathan Ake, Tyrone Mings and Alessio Romagnoli at the top of their centre back shortlist as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyes long-term partner for Harry Maguire'

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the hunt for a long-term partner for Harry Maguire
* Alessio Romagnoli, Nathan Ake and Tyrone Mings are reportedly on shortlist
* Maguire has shored up United defence since arriving and is now club captain

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing up a long-term partner for Harry Maguire and has reportedly identified Nathan Ake, Tyrone Mings and Alessio Romagnoli as possible options.

The Red Devils spent £80million on Maguire last summer to shore up their defence and the former Leicester City man is now the club captain.

United have made vast improvements since the turn of the year after a tough start to the season and Solskjaer thinks one of those three defenders will help them make the next step, according to ESPN.

Nathan Ake (L) and Tyrone Mings are being considered by Manchester United this summer

Ake of Bournemouth and Mings of Aston Villa are both in danger of being relegated with their respective sides this season and could be available for cut-price deals in the summer.

Romagnoli has been a well-established defender in Serie A for some time and could be tempted to move to England as AC Milan look set to miss out on the Champions League once again.

He would demand the heftiest fee out of the three options, with the 25-year-old highly rated around Europe and incoming Milan boss Ralf Rangnick keen to have him in his troops next campaign.

Alessio Romagnoli is third candidate Ole Gunnar Solksjaer could partner with Harry Maguire

Maguire's regular partner this season has been Victor Lindelof who has performed adequately but it is a position that has been identified as needing improvement by Solksjaer for a while.

Dutchman Ake lined up at Old Trafford for the Cherries on Saturday but was unable to prevent the home side running riot in a 5-2 victory, while Solskjaer was seen exchanging with the defender after the game.

Mings, who made his England debut earlier this season, could also have a chance to impress his potential new suitors when the Red Devils visit Villa Park on Thursday.

tiga2nya cukup bagus untuk jadi partner Maguire. GW lalu habis pertandingan Ole 'kasih kode' ke Ake, akankah malam ini setelah pertandingan Ole juga 'kasih kode' ke Mings?
