Default Re: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire might struggle to get over being booed by England fans during their win over Ivory Coast... the Manchester United captain has eight months to silence his critics with his World Cup place at risk

* Harry Maguire has work to do to earn a World Cup spot in Qatar later this year
* The United captain was booed by his own fans in England's win vs Ivory Coast
* He is under pressure with the likes of Marc Guehi challenging him for a spot
* Maguire has time on his side to steady the ship and prove he is worthy

You hope Harry Maguire’s got a thick skin. If not, then this might take some getting over for the embattled England defender.

In truth, there were actually a few boos here at Wembley on Saturday afternoon when Maguire’s name was read out on the PA system as England prepared to face Switzerland.

It went largely under the radar at the time; there was only really a smattering of jeers - and even so, it happened well in advance of kick-off in front of a half-empty stadium.

But there was no escaping the issue on Tuesday night; the boos were fully audible against Ivory Coast.

Harry Maguire needs thick skin after being booed by England fans during win over Ivory Coast. Maguire is enduring a difficult season and jeers from the crowd will do nothing to help him. Maguire is in England fans' crosshairs, which just sums up the bad luck Maguire is having

First, prior to first whistle when his name was confirmed as starter, and just in case Maguire hadn’t clocked, there were more during his first touch of the ball.

The merits of a group of fans jeering one of their own players is an altogether different argument.

What does it achieve? Not very much. Are those that booed well educated on Maguire’s season? Probably not.

But for some reason, England supporters need a target: it just so happens that Maguire’s in their crosshairs.

That’s life for the central defender right now. This intentional break was supposed to provide momentary solace following his tribulations at domestic level.

Instead, those troubles were rammed down his throat by the very people hailing him as a national hero during last summer’s unforgettable run to the European Championship finals.

Football’s a fickle business. Maguire found out first hand on Tuesday night.

It should provide the centre-half with at least some comfort that the barracking wasn’t sustained; indeed you would imagine the boos were more likely a simple case of bandwagon jumping than anything more sinister.

He has been slammed by fans and pundits for poor errors in Man United's up and down season. He has shone under Gareth Southgate for England and remains a trusted foot soldier for him. Maguire still has time on his side and has eight months to turn things around and keep his England spot ahead of the World Cup

By the end of the first half, the 29-year-old was even garnering some applause, first for immaculately controlling an awkward ball falling out the air.

One driving run from deep inside his own half to beyond the halfway line after elegantly dropping his shoulder was also deemed worthy of the supporters' adulation.

All that might not sound much, but it will mean everything to Maguire.

Baby steps; maybe that’s his best route back to the form Gareth Southgate believes he is capable of.

In the face of difficult questioning, the England manager has staunchly defended Maguire during the past 10 days. Rightly so.

He’s been one of the brightest lights of Southgate’s successful six year reign; it’s only correct he shows one of his most trusted foot soldiers a level of loyalty.

But quite how loyal Southgate can continue to be if Maguire’s club form doesn’t improve in the lead up to the World Cup is another question.

Of course, the national team head coach will hope it doesn’t come to that.

Equally, however, Southgate should be preparing for the unthinkable. The emergence of Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace, who by all accounts has deeply impressed Southgate on his first international call up, provides Southgate with an intriguing option.

Conor Coady, Tyrone Mings, Fikayo Tomori and Ben White will also harbour genuine aspirations of replacing the troubled defender in the heart of England’s rearguard alongside John Stones should Southgate decide Maguire’s place is vulnerable.

The good news for the £80million man is that he has time to steady the ship. Maguire will now return to Old Trafford in hope of repairing his shattered confidence.

The unpredictability that has engulfed United’s season so far is hardly the sort of platform Maguire would find conducive to piecing himself together.

Under Ralph Rangnick, there’s been little indication of those conditions improving between now and the end of the season meaning Maguire has no option but to make the best of a difficult situation.

But there’s no reason why he can’t. And who knows what next season might bring. A new club manager, renewed hope but above all else - better performances.

What Maguire knows for sure is that he has eight months to turn it round.

Is he capable? Of course he is. You don’t get to captain Manchester United, play in a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final if you’re not.

But has he got the minerals to emerge out of his worrying slump? Southgate will be banking on his key defender silencing the boos once and for all.

'Roy Keane has MASSIVE influence... he can be particularly vicious': Danny Mills suggests pundit's criticism of Harry Maguire has led to the fan backlash against Manchester United captain

* Harry Maguire was booed by England fans during their win over Ivory Coast
* The 29-year-old has been widely condemned by fans during a season to forget
* Roy Keane has been a vocal critic of the defender when doing TV punditry work

Former England defender Danny Mills has suggested that Roy Keane is to blame for Harry Maguire's backlash from football supporters.

Maguire is enduring a season to forget - with the Manchester United captain often highlighted as a reason for their struggles this campaign by a section of Red Devils' supporters.

And the backlash the centre back has received reached also touched his displays at international level for England now after he was booed by fans before and during Tuesday's 3-0 friendly win over the Ivory Coast at Wembley.

The 29-year-old's name was greeted by a smattering of boos from the home crowd when it was announced ahead of kick-off.

Harry Maguire was booed by some England fans during their friendly with the Ivory Coast. England supporters also jeered the centre back during his first few touches of the ball. Danny Mills believes Roy Keane has been a contributing factor to fans' views on Maguire

There seemed to be further jeers for the Manchester United defender during his first few touches of the ball.

Maguire has been often criticised by Manchester United legend Keane this term and in season's gone by during his TV punditry work and Mills believes the Irishman's standing in the game has influenced fans' thinking.

'Roy Keane has massive influence, unbelievable,' Mills said on talkSPORT's Kick Off show. 'Roy Keane says it, it's gospel.

'I think when Roy Keane speaks we all sit up and listen. I think he's got huge gravitas in the game, for what he's achieved, for what he's done and everything he's gone through and achieved in the game.

'You do have to listen but he can be particularly vicious at times.

'No matter how he's played, if Roy Keane says he's had an absolute shocker and it's disgraceful and he's had a stinker we all go "well, he has done", even without watching the game ourselves and going through it.

'We listen because it's Roy Keane and he's spoken so without seeing it as ourselves we take his opinion as gospel. Maybe we shouldn't do that.'

Tuesday's scenes follow the backlash Maguire took on social media following his error during England training.

In a video that was uploaded to England's official YouTube channel, the Three Lions were seen taking part in a competitive game of rondo.

The likes of Jude Bellingham, Kyle Walker-Peters and James Ward-Prowse were playing the ball around Jack Grealish and Nike Pope with one touch passes.

The squad were heard counting the successful number of passes out loud before Maguire decided to stop the ball when Pope approached him.

Jordan Henderson was not happy with the Manchester United captain and instantly exclaimed: 'What you doing?'.

The video clip went viral on social media and fans decided to lay into Maguire - questioning his ability once again.

Mills feels everyone takes Keane's 'opinion as gospel', something that shouldn't always be. Maguire was ridiculed on social media for a video that went viral of him training with England. England boss Southgate slammed the reception Maguire received in the 3-0 win on Tuesday

Despite his detractors, Maguire does have a staunch supporter in Gareth Southgate. The England boss launched an emphatic defence of his centre back after he was booed during the Ivory Coast friendly.

'I thought the reception was a joke, an absolute joke. The way he has performed for us has been absolutely phenomenal. I don't get it. We're either all in this together or we're not.

'He's in an England shirt and not only should you support a player in an England shirt regardless, but when you've played at the level he has for us and put the performances in he has, it should be total commitment behind him. I don't get it at all.

'His performance was pretty faultless really. He stepped out from the back really well for the first goal, was involved in the second one too. So, yeah. The team are totally united. We recognise everyone has difficult moments but he's a top player and he will come through it.

'They are real England fans and some are influenced by whatever - social media or players that played previously who are influencing opinion. The club situation is obviously very difficult but he's in an England shirt.

'I remember decades ago a few players being booed in an England shirt and it's never been acceptable to me. Fans should always get behind their team.'

'Take him out for the harder matches!': Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic urges Ralf Rangnick to DROP Harry Maguire and incredibly suggests he should only play in 'easier games' as he struggles for form and confidence

* Harry Maguire has faced an onslaught of criticism for his displays this season
* The Manchester United has faced more criticism after a 1-0 defeat to Everton
* Former defender Nemanja Vidic is urging Ralf Rangnick to drop the England star

Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic insists Harry Maguire would benefit from being out of the limelight by only playing in the easier games.

The England international was once again at the forefront of criticism alongside many of his Red Devils team-mates as they crashed to a 1-0 defeat away to Everton to suffer a major blow in their hopes to bag Champions League football next season.

To make matters worse, Anthony Gordon's goal for the Toffees deflected off the £80million centre-back and went beyond goalkeeper David De Gea.

That is just one of a number of high-profile mistakes the captain has made in what has been a tumultuous campaign, with the club currently set to miss out on Champions League qualification for next season.

Nemanja Vidic insists Harry Maguire (pictured) would benefit from being out of the limelight. Maguire was once again at the forefront of criticism after United lost 1-0 away to Everton. Former defender Vidic is urging Ralf Rangnick to drop Maguire for the harder games. Vidic says everyone goes through a spell of bad form like Maguire is in their careers

It is not only just at Old Trafford, fans are getting on his back either, as a section of Three Lions fans jeered Maguire's name when it was read out ahead of England's recent friendly at Wembley.

Nevertheless, Maguire was named in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament and has impressed previously, therefore it must be about finding a way back to top form for the former Leicester City defender.

Vidic, who made 300 appearances for the Red Devils during a trophy-laden spell under Sir Alex Ferguson, feels it's up to Ralf Rangnick to drop Harry Maguire for certain games to help restore his confidence.

'Every player has a problem with form at some time in his career,' Vidic told the Athletic. 'I did and it's clear that Maguire is not at his best this season.

'The player needs to feel powerful and strong on the pitch again, not as it is now where he feels that it's not happening for him.

'It's difficult to play well when you're under so much pressure because people are waiting for you to make a mistake. You're asking me this and I'm replying as a coach.'

Some fans have even called for Maguire to have the captaincy taken away from him at Old Trafford and reports emerged earlier in the season that an unnamed team-mate had questioned former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's call to hand him the armband.

But both Solskjaer and interim boss Ralf Rangnick have resisted the urge to hand the captaincy over to star forward and United legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Another former United star Wayne Rooney recently backed Maguire, insisting that he can be a big part of the Red Devils regaining their confidence.

The Derby manager said during Monday Night Football on Sky Sports: 'I like Harry (Maguire). I know him personally.

'He hasn't been in his best form this season as a lot of players haven't. He goes and plays for England and looks like a world-class centre-back.

'Again a lot of it is confidence. The players need to feel winning again and winning consistently to get that confidence back. If they do that, I think Harry can be a big part of it.'

Man United are NOT motivated by the prospect of derailing Liverpool's quadruple bid, claims Harry Maguire... but captain says they have to put the record straight at Anfield with 5-0 mauling at Old Trafford 'the lowest point of the season'

* Harry Maguire says Manchester United aren't motivated by hurting Liverpool
* Maguire insists United are focused on themselves ahead of the trip to Anfield
* United are determined to win to boost their chances of finishing in the top four

Harry Maguire has insisted that damaging Liverpool's attempts to win the quadruple won't be an incentive for Manchester United on Tuesday night.

United travel to Anfield determined to pick up points in their quest to finish in the top four and Maguire stated that his team are focused on their own ambitions.

A victory for United would see them go level on points with fourth placed Tottenham, albeit having played a game more.

Maguire told Sky Sports: 'I don't think that's part of our motivation [stopping Liverpool's quadruple bid], to be honest.

'I think the motivation is going to Anfield, playing against Liverpool and winning a football match and getting three points for this club and the fans.

'The fans have stuck with us throughout this season, they turn up in their numbers wherever they go, they've been amazing in such a difficult season.

Harry Maguire says Manchester United aren't motivated by damaging Liverpool's quadruple bid. Maguire described United's 5-0 loss to Liverpool as one of the lowest points of his career

'For us to go to Anfield, perform well and get the three points, it would be a huge moment for us to give to the fans. So I think that's the big motivation for us.'

In the reverse fixture at Old Trafford Liverpool ran out 5-0 winners, with Mohamed Salah scoring a hat-trick, while Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also got on the scoresheet.

United captain Maguire admitted that the defeat by Jurgen Klopp's side was one of the lowest points of his career.

Maguire stated that the rivalry between Liverpool and United is so intense that you don't need extra motivation to play in these fixtures.

Maguire said: 'Yeah for sure, like you say that was such a low point, the lowest point of the season, one of the lowest points of my career, and I'm sure the rest of the lads', without international football involved in that.

'You don't need motivation to play in these games. It's such a big rivalry, when you join this club you know the rivalry, it's one of the biggest in the world.

'It's a game we've got to look forward to. We know we're going to have to play at our best to get something, and that's what we've got to prepare for.'

United survived a scare to beat Norwich 3-2 on Saturday, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick.

Ralf Rangnick's side are likely to turn to Ronaldo for inspiration again during a crucial week, with the trip to Anfield followed by another away game on Saturday against Arsenal.

United then host Chelsea in another high-profile fixture before finishing the season with games against Brentford and Brighton.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Gabriel Agbonlahor hits out at Roy Keane for the former Manchester United captain's unfair criticism of Harry Maguire, with the ex-Aston Villa forward insisting the under fire centre-back was the Red Devils' BEST defender last season
]* Harry Maguire has been part of a nightmare season for Manchester United
* The defender was among the United stars most publicly attacked last term
* Former United captain Roy Keane has been vocal in his Maguire criticisms
* Gabriel Abgonlahor believes fans are too influenced by Keane's views

Gabriel Agbonlahor has leapt to the defence of underfire Harry Maguire by claiming pundits such as Roy Keane have been too personal with their attacks on the Manchester United defender.

United struggled badly this season, with notions of a tilt at the Premier League title turning into a campaign where the club limped across the line to scrape a Europa League place in sixth spot.

While few United stars could claim to have had an excellent season, skipper Maguire was among the players heavily criticised by pundits as well as supporters having appeared out of form.

Maguire's concerning displays even saw him dropped in a crucial game at Arsenal late in the campaign and although he would end the season back in the side, he has endured a year to forget.

Agbonlahor though believes the tirade of negativity aimed at the England international is not deserved and have been influenced by the punditry delivered by former United captain Roy Keane, which he claims has influenced fans' opinions of players.

'Pundits like Roy Keane, who really come for players like Maguire a bit too personally for my liking, and then everyone feels that what Keane says is how it should be,' the former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT.

Gabriel Agbonlahor (right) has come to the defence of under fire Manchester United defender Harry Maguire (left) by claiming he has been unfairly overly criticised this season. Maguire has been part of a United side that have endured a nightmare 2021-22 campaign

'Then people have made decisions on Maguire because of what pundits like Keane say.

Agbonlahor then also claimed that Maguire had still been United's best defender this season ahead of team-mates Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof - the former he believes has been a huge disappointment following his summer transfer from Real Madrid

'So I think that he gets a lot of stick that he doesn't deserve. He's Manchester United's best defender,' he added.

'You look at Varane and Lindelof and they have both been very poor this season and as a country we should be getting behind our players not booing them and not trying to put them off their game.'

Agbonlahor's comments come after Maguire hit out at yobs who have delivered terrifying bomb threats to his home.

Cheshire Police opened an investigation into the incident in April and, speaking for the first time about it, Manchester United skipper Maguire said: 'Obviously I'm in a position where I'm going to be criticised.

'United paid a large sum of money for me and I totally accept criticism when we concede goals or make mistakes.

'But there is a line where we are human beings. I do have a family. People ask if it affects me. My mentality is that it doesn't affect me too much but when it comes to bomb threats, it is more about family.

'My wife Fern, I'm just happy my kids are at an age where they don't read things and see things on the news. If my kids were older, they could see things and go to school and people are speaking about it. That is when it affects you a little bit more.

'United are one of the most loved clubs in the world and also one of the most hated in the world. We're under the most scrutiny.'

Harry Maguire 'is set to discuss his position as Manchester United captain with new boss Erik ten Hag' after his leadership came under heavy scrutiny amid a dismal 2021-22 season

* Harry Maguire is at risk of losing the Manchester United captaincy
* New manager Erik ten Hag will hold talks with the England man next month
* Maguire has been subject to vast criticism for his poor performances
* Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes are awaiting a decision

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is set to hold talks with new manager Erik ten Hag over the future of his role as captain of the club.

Maguire has struggled for form since his £80million move from Leicester in 2019, drawing criticism from fans of both club and country along the way.

The England defender was booed by his own supporters when the Three Lions faced Ivory Coast at Wembley in March, and according to The Mirror, Dutchman ten Hag will speak with Maguire ahead of the new era at Old Trafford.

Maguire's form was below par last season and blame was often pointed his way as United finished with their lowest ever points total in the Premier League.

The Red Devils finished sixth, missing out on Champions League football by 13 points, which led to the appointment of ten Hag in an attempt to once again turn their fortunes around.

Regular calls questioning Maguire's place in the team and role as captain surfaced across the red side of Manchester, and now the new man in charge wants to settle on the former Leicester man's role once and for all.

Magurie is yet to meet ten Hag in person, and is currently away on international duty with England, playing 90 minutes on Saturday as his side drew 0-0 with Italy in a repeat of the Euro 2020 final.

Harry Maguire has struggled for form at Manchester United but remains the club captain. New United manager Erik ten Hag will hold talks with Maguire about his position as captain

Ten Hag is set to gather his squad on June 27 for the start of pre-season, but with some international player granted an extra break, Maguire will meet with his new boss in July to discuss the role he is said to be desperate to retain.

He has been the captain of United since January 2020, just five months after he became the most expensive defender of all time in signing for the club from Leicester.

Whilst the 29-year-old's position is in doubt, Ten Hag was complimentary of the defender in his introductory press conference, saying: 'I have to repeat, next season is a different season. I think he did a great job, he is a great player.

'He achieved already a lot. A really good contribution to Manchester United, so I am looking forward to working with him.'

Maguire made 37 appearances in all competitions for United last term, with injuries resulting in a stagnated campaign for the defender.

Losing the captaincy may reignite his United career, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and David De Gea waiting in the wings to take over the role.

On his own form, Maguire said: 'This season I've had some bad games, but I wouldn't be playing every game for Manchester United in the starting XI if I'd been playing bad every game.

'There's a reason why both managers have put me in the starting 11 every game.

'It's what I bring to the team, what I bring to the starting 11 , but I do also understand that I'm the captain of this club, I cost a lot of money and when things aren't going well and we're conceding too many goals, I'm going to get criticised.'

Harry Maguire is set to stay at Manchester United, but could lose the captaincy... and under-fire defender could face even greater competition next season with boss Erik ten Hag keen to land another top centre back

* Harry Maguire's future at Old Trafford has been in doubt after a poor season
* Form and leadership was called into question by some of his own team-mates
* Erik ten Hag aims to keep him alongside Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof

Manchester United are set to keep Harry Maguire but will look to sign a new centre back if they can offload Eric Bailly, Phil Jones or Axel Tuanzebe this summer.

Maguire's future at Old Trafford has been in doubt after a poor season in which the United captain's form and leadership was called into question by some of his own team-mates.

New manager Erik ten Hag plans to keep him as one of his central defenders alongside Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof, even though the captaincy now appears to be up in the air.

Ten Hag was non-committal over the issue at his unveiling last month after United's interim boss Ralf Rangnick said the players should vote on who wears the armband.

Maguire lost his place under Rangnick and will face even greater competition next season if United can land another player in his position this summer.

Their first choice would be Jurrien Timber, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, but United believe he may decide to stay with the Dutch champions. Timber's Ajax team-mate Lisandro Martinez and Villarreal's Pau Torres are also options.

Ten Hag is keen to sign two more of his former Ajax players, Frenkie de Jong and Antony, as well as Christian Eriksen.

De Jong is United's No 1 transfer target as they remain locked in talks with Barcelona over a fee for the Holland midfielder. United will not be pressured into meeting Barca's £70million demand and are prepared to walk away from the deal.

Brazil winger Antony would cost in the region of £40m from Ajax, but Eriksen is a free agent after a season at Brenford.

United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is expected to join Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan as talks between the two clubs progress.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

'Last year was certainly a setback for myself on my career path': Harry Maguire is determined to bounce back with a 'fresh start' at Man United this summer... with the centre back confident Erik ten Hag's 'tough' pre-season can pay dividends

* Harry Maguire says Manchester United need to put last season behind them
* The England defender lost his place in the team towards the end of the campaign
* Despite speculation, he has retained the captaincy under new boss Erik ten Hag
* Maguire believes 'little glimpses' of Ten Hag's principles are already on show
* United are currently in Melbourne preparing for the return of the Premier League

Harry Maguire got behind a camera to film the Manchester United fans singing his name at a Melbourne hotel on Saturday, and for a few moments at least it must have felt like all was well in his world.

But the truth is that no United player needs to make a fresh start at Old Trafford under new manager Erik ten Hag more than Maguire.

Ten Hag confirmed that United's £80million centre back will remain as captain when the squad touched down in Bangkok to start their pre-season tour last week.

The fact it was in doubt in the first place says much about a torrid year in Maguire's life on and off the pitch which he admitted on Saturday was 'certainly a setback on my career path'.

No Manchester United player needs to make a fresh start this season more than Harry Maguire. There has been talk of a clash of personalities with United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo

The 29-year-old's suitability to be skipper has even been questioned among his own team-mates amid talk of a clash of personalities with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Maguire suffered a loss of form that also led to him losing his place in the team under interim manager Ralf Rangnick towards the end of United's worst season in the Premier League era.

Rangnick only fuelled the captaincy debate by saying that senior players should vote on who wears the armband at United.

Maguire was also booed by England fans when he played against Ivory Coast at Wembley in March, and then had to move his partner Fern - whom he married in the south of France last month - and their two children out of their Cheshire home following a bomb threat in April.

'Listen, last year was disappointing,' said Maguire at a question and answer session with about 30 fans in Melbourne on Saturday that also featured Anthony Martial, Alex Telles and Tom Heaton.

'As an individual I didn't play well, and as team we certainly didn't play well. But a good career can last 10 to 15 years and you're never going to have every year where it's plain sailing and you don't have any difficulties.

'You're going to have to fight, you're going to have setbacks and last year was certainly a setback for myself on my career path.

'Everyone - the players, the club - know last year was nowhere near good enough, but it's a fresh start and we've got a big season ahead.

He has retained the United captaincy amid speculation that Erik ten Hag would make a change. Maguire believes 'little glimpses' of Ten Hag's principles are already on show in pre-season. The imminent arrival of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax will only increase competition for places. Maguire admits that United's gruelling pre-season schedule under Ten Hag has been 'tough'

'It's behind us now and we look forward to the future and getting this club back to winning trophies, which is what it's all about.'

Despite Ten Hag's vote of confidence, the road ahead for Maguire might not be an easy one. The imminent arrival of Lisandro Martinez in a £46m deal from Ajax will only increase the competition for places in central defence.

Maguire's form is still under the microscope and he was criticised for his part in Melbourne Victory's goal at the MCG on Friday when United recovered to win 4-1 after he missed the win over Liverpool in Bangkok with a tight hamstring.

But the former Leicester defender believes he and the rest of the United squad will be ready when they kick off the season at home to Brighton in three weeks' time after a punishing pre-season under Ten Hag.

The squad trained for two-and-a-half hours in Melbourne on Saturday despite playing the night before.

'It's been tough. The running has been hard but we're really looking forward to the season,' added Maguire.

'Erik and his coaching staff are bringing their ideas, and the first two games you've seen little glimpses of the principles.

'We're working towards being ready for that first Premier League game, that's what matters. Everything we're doing now is building for that first game.'

When United were last in Melbourne, the club had just won the Treble in 1999 under Sir Alex Ferguson. They arrived here this week in rather different circumstances following last season's sixth-placed finish.

Midfielder Scott McTominay admitted the players shouldn't escape criticism for the slump, admitting it has 'touched a nerve' among the squad.

You're playing for Man United, you're going to get criticised,' said McTominay. 'If you think you're going to come and play for Man United and you're not going to get a little bit of criticism here and there, then you're in the wrong job because that's just not how it works at this football club.

'Maybe you need to have a little look in the mirror because that's just part and parcel of the game. Everyone gets criticised, that's the world we live in. Social media criticism: you only see how much you want to see. That's part and parcel of it as well.

'It's obviously difficult to speak about that last season. It touched a nerve in terms of when we speak about it again as a group.

'It's not nice and that's got to be the motivation now to put everything back to normal and go for trophies again under the new boss, because I know that this squad is more than capable of doing that.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Erik ten Hag warns Harry Maguire he is NOT guaranteed a starting spot at Manchester United despite retaining the captaincy... as he tells the England defender to 'prove' his quality after the £55m arrival of Lisandro Martinez

* Harry Maguire has retained the Manchester United captaincy under Erik ten Hag
* Ten Hag has described the England international as a 'really impressive' player
* But he also warned that Maguire will have to fight for his spot in the United team
* The signing of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax increases competition for places
* Ten Hag says he has no concerns over the Argentine defender only being 5ft 9in

Erik ten Hag has warned Harry Maguire that his decision to keep the England defender as Manchester United captain does not guarantee him a first-team place at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has given Maguire a vote of confidence by letting him hold onto the armband, even though the 29-year-old struggled for form last season.

'Harry is really impressive and I expect a lot from him,' said Ten Hag. 'I always see the captaincy as an issue that I dictate.

'The team building for me is an important point and I always talk about a group of leaders. The captain is a really important one and I'm happy with him.'

However, Lisandro Martinez's £55.3million move to United from Ajax will put more pressure on Maguire, with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof providing even more competition for places in central defence.

'We have good centre-halves and Harry is one of them,' added Ten Hag. 'He can play on the left side and on the right because he is right-footed.

'But there is also internal competition and that is what a club like Man United needs. You cannot win with 11 players. We need a squad, especially this season with so many games.

'I think he is (a first-choice player). He's proved it in the past but he has also to prove it in the present and in the future. I will support him everywhere I can. In the end, he has to do it by himself, and he has the qualities to do it.'

At 5ft 9in, Martinez is small for a centre-back, particularly one coming to English football for the first time.

But Ten Hag said: 'I think he's not the tallest but he is quite good in the air. I feel comfortable with that. Of course, you need the right balance. He has good timing, that's one of his capabilities.

'He also brings a South American aggressiveness, control and spirit to the team. I think it will fit really good to Manchester United and the way we play.

'I analysed United last year in the left part of the defence. He is left-footed and that is an advantage in possession and defending. We are bringing him in to not strengthen the squad, but the team.'
