Ex-Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo sent off for Boca Juniors after getting two yellow cards in TWO MINUTES against fierce rivals River Plate in latest disciplinary lapse

* Marcos Rojo was sent off in Boca Juniors' 2-1 loss at River Plate on Sunday
* The ex-Man United defender was shown two yellow cards in two minutes
* The red card comes months after he punched a security guard after a game
* Rojo has been sent off five times but never saw red while a Man United player

Marcos Rojo must have dreamed of playing in the Superclasico against River Plate when he joined Boca Juniors earlier this year but his taste of Argentina's biggest fixture in front of fans did not last long.

The former Manchester United defender was sent off in only the 16th minute of Sunday's game at River's Monumental stadium after picking up two yellow cards in two minutes.

The red card cost his team dear as Julian Alvarez struck twice for River in the first half.

Boca managed to avoid a humiliating result and managed to pull goal back in added time through Carlos Zambrano but still lost 2-1 as some 50,000 River fans celebrated victory in the first Superclasico to take place in front of fans since 2019.

Rojo earned his first yellow for a wild lunge on Braian Romero in the middle of the park and remonstrated with the referee after he was shown the card.

The booking did little to calm him down though and less than 60 seconds later he clattered into Agustin Palavecino on the edge of the area and was shown a second yellow, to the delight of the baying home supporters.

It is not the first time Rojo has run into trouble since returning to Argentina.

Three months ago he and several Boca team-mates were caught up in a huge brawl during a Copa Libertadores game away to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro which led to Rojo punching a security guard.

Boca were left incensed after a goal from Marcelo Weigandt was controversially ruled out by VAR in the second-leg of their round of 16 tie against Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.

He was then shown a fifth career red card after clattering into River's Agustin Palavecino

The match went to penalties where Boca were defeated 3-1 and the evening soon descended into chaos as the Argentine side tried to break into the Mineiro dressing room before later clashing with police, who used tear gas in response.

Rojo's red card in such a crucial game will be of little surprise to Manchester United fans who remember his time at the club.

Remarkably, the Argentine was never sent off in his six years in the Premier League although he had more than a few near misses.

Watford's then boss Marco Silva complained that Rojo was not sent off in a 4-2 home defeat to United in November 2017 after fouling Roberto Pereyra and conceding a penalty, having already been shown a yellow card.

Rojo was also fortunate to not see red in a 1-1 draw at Everton in December 2016 following a reckless foul on Idrissa Gueye, while he could also have been sent off on two separate occasions against Chelsea.

The Argentine appeared to stamp on Eden Hazard in a 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge in 2017 while Chelsea's then boss Maurizio Sarri felt he should have been dismissed in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in April 2019.

Sunday's quick-fire double booking against River was the fifth time Rojo had been sent off in his career.

He received three red cards while a Sporting Lisbon player - all for double bookings - and was sent off early on in the 2016 Copa America final between Argentina and Chile for a straight red card.

Ex-Man United defender Marcos Rojo is handed a five-match ban and £18,000 fine for PUNCHING a security guard during tunnel brawl between Boca Juniors and Atletico Mineiro players after fiery Copa Libertadores clash in July

* Boca Juniors players were left incensed following a Copa Libertadores match
* A goal from Marcelo Weigandt was ruled out by VAR and the match went to pens
* After losing pens, Boca's players tried to get into the opposition dressing room
* Players were not calmed down and there were ugly clashes with the police
* Marcos Rojo, formerly of Manchester United, was caught up in violent scenes

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has been handed a five-match ban and an £18,000 fine for his involvement in Boca Juniors' tunnel brawl with rivals Atletico Mineiro following their controversial Copa Libertadores defeat.

Boca Juniors' players were involved in a sensational bust-up following the defeat and Rojo was seen punching a member of security.

The 31-year-old was also reportedly captured tearing a fire extinguisher from the wall and lifting it above his head before he was calmed down and urged to drop it by a coach, according to the Manchester Evening News.

After a lengthy investigation CONMEBOL have decided on punishment for every individual involved and have handed former Red Devils defender Rojo the five-match ban and hefty fine.

'Suspend the player Marcos Rojo for 5 (five) matches,' a CONMEBOL statement read.

'This sanction is must comply with the provisions of Articles 73 and following of the Disciplinary Code of CONMEBOL.

'Likewise, the Player Marcos Rojo is imposed a fine of USD 25,000 (twenty five thousand US dollars). The amount of this fine will be automatically debited from the amount to be received by Club Atletico Boca Juniors, in respect of Television or Sponsorship rights.'

Boca were left incensed after a goal from Marcelo Weigandt was controversially ruled out by VAR in the second-leg of their round-of-16 tie against Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.

The match went to penalties where Boca were defeated 3-1 and the evening soon descended into chaos as the Argentine side tried to break into the Mineiro dressing room before later clashing with police, who were forced to use tear gas in response.

Reports in Argentinian media outlet La Nacion suggested that events took a turn for the worse when Sergio Coelho, President of Atletico Mineiro, provoked the Boca players from the doorway of their dressing room.

This lead to an initial reaction from Boca's Raul Cascini and players were seen on video shoving each other and throwing items.

Police attempted to intervene in a bid to diffuse the escalating violence and they used tear gas canisters in their effort to do so.

The Brazilian police attempted to arrest two of Boca's players, Sebastian Villa and Carlos Zambrano, but no one was detained.

Zambrano later took to his Twitter account where he labelled the disallowed goal and events that followed: 'A disgrace, an abuse, a disaster.'

Boca legend Juan Roman Riquelme, the club's vice-president, came to the defence of his side following the ugly clashes with police.

'When they were in the dressing room, you see a person in a suit who pushed the boys and insults them. The policemen threw gas in the players' faces.

'They gas, what do you do? Do you defend yourself or do you let them hit you? You see the president throwing bottles, the police... they don't say anything to them. That's the truth.'

Santiago Mayor, a Belo Horizonte police officer, told TyC Sports: 'We have information that the match delegate said there was an aggression and at least three Boca players were identified as the aggressors.

'There are videos that show that there was contempt'.

In the subsequent press conference Boca Juniors boss Miguel Russo insisted his squad would not return to Argentina until all were able to do so.

'Either we all leave or none of us leave,' he said, following reports two players were of interest to police.

Shortly after midnight, a tweet by Mineiro's official Twitter account toned down the scandal.

'After a long negotiation, mediated by president Sergio Coelho, and the Argentinian delegation went to the police station to report an incident for property damage and aggression. No one will be arrested.'

Former Manchester Utd ace Marcos Rojo is bizarrely BANNED from captaining Boca Juniors for a month by Argentina FA after he was sent off for kicking an opposition player in the HEAD against arch rivals River Plate

* Marcos Rojo is banned from captaining Boca Juniors by Argentine FA for a month
* The defender is punished following horror tackle in win over River Plate
* Former Man Utd star was shown red after a high boot to the head in injury time

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has been handed an unusual punishment from the Argentine FA following his horror tackle last weekend.

The Boca Juniors skipper was shown his marching orders at the end of his side's 1-0 win over fierce rivals River Plate last Sunday at the Bombonera.

In the seventh minute of stoppage time - and just seconds before the end of the game - the 32-year-old launched into a high tackle on Nicolas de la Cruz with a challenge so high, it almost took the Uruguayan's head off.

Rojo was subsequently given a one-match suspension, but has since been hit with further punishment by the Argentina FA. Bizarrely ruling that the defender isn't allowed to wear the captain's armband at Boca for a month.

It mean's Rojo won't be able to captain the side again until the October 12 meeting with Sarmiento.

Speaking about the incident, the Argentinian didn't seem to disheartened about the ban, and said things always tend to go a little too far during the Superclasico games.

The defender saw red with 30 seconds of stoppage time remaining for a high-studded tackle. Rojo has now been banned by the Argentine FA from captaining his side for the next month

He said: 'It doesn't bother me. The classics are like that, gets a little too much.

'I made three fouls in the whole game, we didn't make as many fouls, we made some tactical fouls, it's not that we had an aggressive game or strange things.

'They played this way and everything was fine, they celebrated, and now that we did it a bit, it bothers us.

'We are calm with the things we did, how we faced the game and how we won it'.

Rojo moved to Boca Juniors in 2021 following a seven-year spell in the Premier League with Manchester United.

During his time at Old Trafford he played 122 games for the Red Devils, scoring two goals, and was part of the United squad that won the FA Cup in 2016 and then the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League a year later under Jose Mourinho.

He was loaned out to Estudiantes in 2020, before making a permanent move back to Argentina last year.
