Default 2014/15 Europe's top strikers

Diego Costa: Has nine goals in seven Premier League games so far

TEAMtalk.com - 8th October 2014 9:15
Stats show Costa is one of Europe's best

Diego Costa has made a brilliant start to life at Chelsea, but how does he rate amongst Europe's top strikers? Whoscored.com take a look...

Diego Costa signing for Chelsea for Ł32m was met with a mixed reaction from the club's fans. How could a player who, as it is widely known and we are regularly reminded, has only enjoyed one truly outstanding season, command such a large fee and solve Chelsea's significant striking woes of last season? Costa himself has hit back at any doubters in devastating style, scoring nine goals in his first seven Premier League matches, raising questions as to whether the Spaniard is the best striker on the planet at present.

Chelsea return to action on Saturday 18 October at Crystal Palace and Costa will again be fancied in the football betting to get amongst the goals.

Obviously, to claim true legendary status, a striker has to maintain goalscoring form for a number of years, and to say that Costa was a better player than the likes of Edinson Cavani or Robin van Persie based on the past 14 months alone would be wide of the mark. Nonetheless, Chelsea would much sooner have the former Atlético man than either of those other two at this moment in time.

Costa is the second-highest goalscorer in Europe's top five leagues this season, behind only Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who has hit 13 in just six appearances thus far. Costa has only failed to score in one league game since joining the Blues - at Manchester City - but even without netting he had huge impact on the game, doing what he arguably does as well as scoring; riling Pablo Zabaleta up to the extent that he was given a second yellow card. Costa, meanwhile, predictably remained on the field.

Costa is more than just a goalscorer, in that he finds ways to get inside his opponents' heads and affect their game off the ball. Given that he has averaged just 21.9 accurate passes per game this season and is yet to contribute an assist, he needs to add something else to his team's game. He is largely benefitting from the incredibly creativity of one Cesc Fŕbregas, with all nine of his goals having come from inside the penalty area with a conversion rate of 40.9%. He has his fellow Spaniard to thank for his 8.29 average rating, which leaves him as the fifth highest-rated player in Europe's top five leagues this season, suggesting that he is not, in fact, quite yet the very best in the world.

Ronaldo's unbelievable goalscoring form has continued this season - after a brief break at the World Cup - with the Portugal winger WhoScored's highest rated player (8.97), having already hit 3 hat-tricks and averaged a goal every 41.5 minutes. If he were to play every minute in La Liga this season and continue scoring at this rate he would attain 82 goals over the course of 38 games. Of course, no one is expecting him to manage anything like that, but another record-breaking season certainly isn't out of the question.

Ronaldo is averaging more goals per game (2.17) than 91 of the 98 teams in Europe's top 5 leagues, but while Costa takes a ruthlessly clinical approach inside the area, Ronaldo averages the most shots per game in Europe (6.8) and thus boasts a worse conversion rate (31.7%).

Also on nine goals - although from nine appearances - is Marseille's André-Pierre Gignac, who has made his best ever start to a season, with his side sitting pretty at the top of Ligue 1. He has averaged 3.9 shots per game while maintaining a conversion rate of 25.7%, so while he is scoring plenty of goals, he is significantly less clinical than either Costa or Ronaldo. His performances have nonetheless earned him a call up to the France squad for the upcoming friendlies against Portugal and Armenia.

Neymar and Lionel Messi have fired Luis Enrique to an unbeaten start to life at Barcelona, together scoring 13 of their 19 league goals, while Messi has added an incredible 6 assists too - the second most in Europe behind only Fŕbregas (7). While Neymar has been clinical in front of goal (36.8% conversion), Messi has been decidedly poor by his high standards (20.7%), but whatever he has been lacking there he makes up for in his general play. His 8.72 rating is the third best in Europe behind only Ronaldo and Arjen Robben (8.75 over 4 appearances). It is a terrifying thought that Barcelona still have Luis Suárez to join in.

Carlos Tévez's start to the season (8.33) has seen him hit 6 goals and create 16 chances, while another Frenchman in Alexandre Lacazette has impressed (7.75), with 7 goals, although his have come from 36 shots 9 (19.4% conversion)

Though Costa could barely have started his Chelsea career any better than he has, he still is not quite at the level of the very best on the planet. That said, in this Chelsea team, brimming with creative talent, Costa is fitting in perfectly and finishing off moves with astounding efficiency. There may be some better goalscorers on the planet at this moment in time, but there certainly aren't many of them.

Hotshot Aguero ahead of pace for season goal record
Man City striker's strike rate on course to beat 31-goal record of Shearer, Ronaldo and Suarez

Amid Manchester City's stuttering start to the 2014/15 season Sergio Aguero has been a shining light in front of goal, leading the charts with 12 goals from 11 Barclays Premier League matches.

The Argentina striker led the line to help City avoid defeat at Queens Park Rangers in the previous match with two sublimely taken equalisers in the 2-2 draw at Loftus Road.

The tally of 12 goals is not a record from the opening 11 matches of a Barclays Premier League season. This is held by Les Ferdinand, who scored 13, for Newcastle in the 1995/96 season, and Aguero is matched by Kevin Phillips, who plundered 12 for Sunderland in the 1999/00 campaign, as did Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers in the inaugural season in 1992/93. None of these three was able to maintain the rate of his tremendous start (although to be fair to Shearer that was because injury curtailed his season at Christmas) to establish a record for goals in a season.

Quote:
Best goalscoring starts to a BPL season

Season - Player - Goals after MW 11 - Total goals

1995/96 - Les Ferdinand - 13 - 25
1992/93 - Alan Shearer - 12 - 16
1999/00 - Kevin Phillips - 12 - 30
2014/15 - Sergio Aguero - 12 - ??
.
The record for goals scored by a player for a 38-match season is 31, held jointly by Shearer (1995/96), Cristiano Ronaldo (2007/08) and Luis Suarez (2013/14) and Aguero's rate of 12 from the opening 11 matches puts the Argentinian ahead of schedule to beat it (see graph above).

When investigating this improvement in goalscoring and what differs in Aguero's approach this season compared with previous ones the striker is firing in more shots on goal than before. This season Aguero has attempted 57 shots, more than five a match on average, when his average until the start of this campaign had been 3.5 per match. Of his shots this season, more than half have been on target, the tally of 30 by far the most by any player in the Barclays Premier League this season.

Fabulous Fabregas on course to be crowned king of assists
Chelsea midfielder has Thierry Henry's record of 20 assists in a season in his sights

One of the reasons for the blistering start made by Chelsea to the 2014/15 season has been the form of Cesc Fabregas. Returning to the Barclays Premier League after three seasons away, the midfielder has fitted seamlessly into Jose Mourinho's side and is leading the way in assists this season with nine.

Indeed, Fabregas is on course to beat the record for the number of assists in a single campaign that was set by his former Arsenal team-mate, Thierry Henry, 12 seasons ago. Henry created 20 goals for his team-mates during the 2002/03 campaign, but got off to a slow start. When comparing the Frenchman's at a similar stage with Fabregas this season Henry had only created four assists by matchweek 11.

In fact, the only player to exceed Fabregas's nine assists in the opening 11 matches of a season is the Spaniard himself, who had 10 for Arsenal in 2009/10. However, for the rest of the season, Fabregas, hampered by injury, was only able to get three more assists and never threatened Henry's record.

Quote:
Top 10 assists in the BPL by season

Season - Player - Assists

2002/03 - Henry - 20
2004/05 - Lampard - 18
2007/08 - Fabregas - 17
1992/93 - Cantona - 16
1999/00 - Beckham - 15
1994/95 - Le Tissier - 15
1995/96 - McManaman - 15
2011/12 - Silva - 15
1999/00 - Solano - 15
2001/02 - Pires - 15
.
Although he leads the chart of assists in the Barclays Premier League this season Fabregas is not the player to have created the most goalscoring chances for his colleagues. This is Dusan Tadic, of Southampton, with 35, one ahead of West Ham United's Stewart Downing and three more than Fabregas. But Fabregas's Chelsea team-mates have been more efficient in converting the chances he has created for them.
