'We have been setting targets for each other': Jesse Lingard reveals he's in friendly competition with team-mate Marcus Rashford as Manchester United duo target top-four finish

* Manchester United are only two points off the final Champions League spot
* Forward Marcus Rashford is in a rich vein of form, scoring six goals in 10 games
* Jesse Lingard has also played an important role in United's improvement

Jesse Lingard has revealed he is in friendly competition with team-mate Marcus Rashford as the Manchester United duo target a top-four finish.

The Red Devils are only two points off the final Champions League spot after going 10 games unbeaten since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed interim manager in December.

Forward Rashford is in a rich vein of form, scoring six goals and providing two assists in Solskjaer's 10 matches in charge.

Midfielder Lingard has also played an important role in United's improvement in form in recent weeks. The 26-year-old has found the net on three occasions and contributed two assists.

Lingard has disclosed that himself and Rashford, who scored the winner at Leicester on Sunday, are involved in a head-to-head battle.

Manchester United are just two points off fourth under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Lingard also praised the impact Solskjaer has had on the camp since taking over in December

'Marcus and me have been setting targets for each other to challenge ourselves,' he said at the launch of the Coca-Cola and Premier League campaign, ‘Where Everyone Plays’ on Tuesday.

'I'm not going to go into the amount of numbers involved because then everyone will know.

'It's to do with goals, but not just how many we can score each. Assists as well.'

Lingard also praised the impact Solskjaer has had on the camp and the way he has turned performances around following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

'We got that run of games that we needed and the momentum is going now,' he said.

'He understands the way we play, he has got the lads firing. We understand the tactics, we've got a structure now and hopefully we can go on.'

United travel to Fulham on Saturday where they will be looking to leapfrog fourth-placed Chelsea - for 24 hours at least.

Default Re: Manchester United under Solskjaer

The top four was the last thing anyone thought about when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived at Manchester United but now they are favourites to stay there... plus find out who makes my team of the week

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United future depends on top four finish
* Champions League important but they must be in next season's tournament

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December, the top four was the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Steady the ship and restore some pride, those were the objectives. Possibly have a run in the FA Cup, too, but not qualify for the Champions League.

Saturday’s victory over Fulham, Solskjaer’s eighth in his nine Premier League games so far, lifted United into the top four for the first time since the opening weekend.

Now, they are the favourites to stay there — and finishing above Arsenal and Chelsea has to be his goal.

Once again, Arsenal are struggling on the road. They have not strengthened an error-prone defence that is yet to keep a clean sheet in an away game.

Chelsea — United’s other rivals for fourth place — are woefully inconsistent, losing 2-0 to a poor Arsenal side, 4-0 at Bournemouth and now 6-0 at Manchester City. Fail to finish above both these teams and Solskjaer cannot get the job full-time.

Some will argue that he has already done enough. He arrived with United 11 points adrift of Chelsea in fourth place and only one above seventh-placed Wolves. United’s richly talented players were consumed by fear and that showed in their performances.

After they drew Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16, I wrote in Sportsmail that for the first time, United were the team everyone wanted to face. With Mourinho in the dugout, I argued, they had next to no chance.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United future will depend on a top four finish. Victory over Paris Saint-Germain is important but won't be crucial for Solskjaer's future

Now, I cannot imagine Thomas Tuchel is looking forward to Tuesday's trip to Old Trafford — not least because Neymar and possibly Edinson Cavani will be absent.

Their stars are playing with a new-found freedom and confidence. United fans I speak to are excited about watching their team again. The aura of invincibility is returning to Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba sums up the change in mood. He is scoring the goals, supplying the assists and making the passes at key moments. On current form, he is the best midfielder in the Premier League.

I cannot wait for his midfield battle with Marco Verratti on Tuesday. How will he combat Pogba’s athleticism?

United have an excellent chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Even if they go further, there would be a feeling of disappointment at Old Trafford if they did not qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season.

United still have four of their five main rivals to play before the end of the season, starting with Liverpool at home a week on Sunday.

Slip up in those fixtures, lose ground on the top four and there will be doubts as to whether Solskjaer is the man to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the title next season. Ultimately, winning the Premier League has to be the aim for a club of United’s size.

Victory over PSG would be another important step in United’s revival but it is the Premier League that will decide Solskjaer’s long-term future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Manchester United belief and purpose... against PSG those will be their greatest weapon

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a fine start as Manchester United's interim boss
* The former striker has delivered 10 wins and a draw from 11 games in charge
* On Tuesday night United will host PSG in the Champions League at Old Trafford
* When tie was drawn United were given no chance but Solskjaer changed that

For supporters of Manchester United the best thing about the Champions League draw — made in those dark, closing days of Jose Mourinho's management — was that it would take them on a trip to Paris. The football itself promised to be unmemorable.

That draw was made on December 17 and was watched by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the sofa at home in Norway with his son Noah.

On Monday, Solskjaer sat behind a table at Old Trafford as United's manager and spoke about the prospects of beating the French champions in this week's last 16 first leg. Nobody laughed.

The Norwegian has not only shown himself to be a proficient motivator and organiser of footballers but has also shone a light on just how destructive a force Mourinho had become at the club.

United remain a team with holes in it. On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain will try to pick at some of those holes. But Solskjaer holds a wand in his hand right now and it promises to take United to places they could not have dreamed of as recently as mid-December.

Former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a fine start as Manchester United's interim boss. On Tuesday night, Solskjaer's United side will host PSG in the Champions League last 16

Players who under-performed under Mourinho are now playing above themselves under his replacement and it is this sought-after sense of belief and purpose that United will take into this tie as their greatest weapon.

Solskjaer continues to duck and weave in the face of questions about his chances of landing the job in the long-term. Of course he does. The life of the caretaker — or interim as they call them these days — comes with no pressure attached. It's a free hit.

Only when you get the gig full-time at a club like United do the walls start to close in and as such the former United striker will hope to continue to ride a wave of bravado and freedom when PSG face his team for Tuesday's game in Manchester.

'Of course I didn't know this would happen back in December,' smiled Solskjaer. 'I was watching the draw with Noah and we said, "Wow that is a tough challenge".

'But we have given ourselves the best possible opportunity in the way we have gone into this game because we're confident. I have found out what kind of team we have here. We are looking a team, we are agreeing on how we should approach games so if there was any time to go into big games like this it is now for us.

'Confidence was low when I arrived but the players have responded fantastically and I don't think we could be in a better frame of mind with confidence and form so we are looking forward to the next few games.

'The squad is very capable of winning against any opponents.'

First and foremost, it was nice to see a United manager offer something resembling a genuine smile on Monday. After the nervous suspicion of David Moyes, the self-satisfaction of Louis van Gaal and the sheer malevolence of Mourinho, Solskjaer carries the look of a man who is actually enjoying himself. It has been a while.

The 45–year-old has his own Champions League history, of course. It is 20 years ago in May since he won United the trophy with almost the final kick of the game in Barcelona. United played poorly that night and may have to be better on Tuesday evening and when they visit Paris for the return next month.

PSG are a strange and unpredictable side and will be weakened by the absence of the injured Neymar and Edinson Cavani.

When they played at Liverpool in the group stages last September, the French were desperately vulnerable without the ball and conceded three. In Paris against the same opposition, they were altogether more visceral and were far too good for Jurgen Klopp's team.

So it stands to reason that United most hope to establish a lead on Tuesday and then hang on to it in Paris.

For all their enormous improvement under Solskjaer, United are still too easy to open up for a side with European aspirations and they must defend better than they routinely do in the Premier League if PSG are not to leave Old Trafford with an away goal.

On Monday Solskjaer was joined in the interview room by Anthony Martial. The young French forward is in that group of players — joined by Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford and Nemanja Matic — who have improved beyond recognition during the Norwegian's time in charge.

Martial said that Solskjaer had encouraged him to play forwards and that said much about just how muddled things had become before Mourinho departed. Solskjaer's greatest achievement has been to restore clarity and simplicity to United's methods. Whatever happens on Tuesday, they will not go to Paris as tourists.

'This is a reality check for Manchester United': Rio Ferdinand believes PSG defeat has brought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down to earth with a bump

* Manchester United's winning run came to an end in 2-0 defeat by PSG
* Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe scored as French side eased to victory
* Rio Ferdinand thought United never got going in an attacking sense
* Pundit also believes that the tie has effectively been put to bed in first leg

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United have been dealt a reality check in their first defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

PSG coasted to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford to seize control of their Champions League last 16 tie.

It was the first time Solskjaer has been on the losing side as interim boss and Ferdinand thinks the result will bring the group back down to earth with a bump.

The BT Sport pundit said: 'I think this is a reality check for this Man United team, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing, I think it’s something that they are going to have to learn from and now we’ll see their reaction to it.

'I’m sure in his tenure this would be a part he’d be preparing for then it’s how they prepare and react to this defeat.

'We knew it was going to come as some point, he’s been on a phenomenal run. he’s rejuvenated this place, given it a bit of belief. Today it was a level up and we saw the difference in the Champions League with the Premier League tonight.'

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United are effectively out of the Champions League. United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat, their first loss under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Two second-half goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe were enough to see Thomas Tuchel's side over the line and they will take a commanding lead back to Paris.

Ferdinand was disappointed that United failed to show any of the attacking prowess they've so far demonstrated under Solskjaer.

'Tonight, they didn’t get going as an attacking force at all. We’ve seen some great attacking play in this team over the last few weeks, today we didn’t see any examples of that.

'PSG without two of their best attacking players coasted second half and really put the game to bed and I think the tie too,' he concluded.

Owen Hargreaves, who was in the studio with Ferdinand, heaped praise on the Ligue 1 side: 'Two away goals is magnificent, we said before the game Tuchel is brave and we saw that, it was a really good performance.

'Defensively, Marquinhos was the best player on the pitch and Buffon didn’t have to make a save virtually all game.

'It was comfortable in the end you’d have to say, it’s a reality check for Man United, they’ve been magnificent up to this point, it’s maybe just one step too far.'

And Paul Ince gave a withering assessment of United's performance.

He said: 'The scoreline has probably flattered Man United if you look at the chances that they had.

'It was a tough ride for them today, they really got schooled today in how to play football.'

'We are Manchester United and we play to win trophies': Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes them 'go for it' while aiming subtle dig at Jose Mourinho after Chelsea win

* Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night
* The midfielder starred, scoring and providing an assist at Chelsea's ground
* Paul Pogba clashed with Jose Mourinho but was full of praise for interim boss

Paul Pogba believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Manchester United playing in a way that suits the club — while subtly contrasting it to the football under Jose Mourinho.

The France midfielder starred during Monday night's 2-0 win at Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, providing the assist for the opening goal before bagging the second with an excellent header.

And after his own clashes with Mourinho, he insisted United were now playing with a style that can bring silverware to Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Manchester United playing a way that suits the club. Solskjaer trusts the players, according to Pogba, and he added that style of play suits United

Pogba told the BBC: ‘It was a beautiful win today. A great performance from the team. It wasn’t easy but we did it and we are really pleased with that win.

'Like I always say the team help me to get to my best. I give my everything for them. We are just enjoying playing together.

‘Obviously, we are Manchester United and we play to win trophies and he (Solskjaer) took this job because he can do it.

'He trusts us and we trust him and we will go for it. We don’t know if we are going to win but we always go for it.’

Ander Herrera praised substitutes Alexis Sanchez, Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay while adding: ‘We had to fight until the end. We knew how to play them. I played today the more offensive role.

'I would like to speak about Alexis, Andreas and Scott the way they play in the game.

'A world class player like Sanchez and he comes on to fight and play this way because this is Manchester United.

'We have to be critical of ourselves as well because we could have been better with the ball in the second half.’

'I'm learning a lot under Ole... he keeps me hungry': Romelu Lukaku praises Solskjaer after scoring brace in win over Crystal Palace as Manchester United stars check in for training

* Romelu Lukaku scored two goals in Manchester United's 3-1 win at Palace
* The Belgian ace played down the middle as Marcus Rashford started on bench
* Lukaku feels like he's learning a lot under stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Manchester United's first-team stars returned to training on Thursday morning

Romelu Lukaku was thrilled — and perhaps a little relieved — to finally make a telling contribution to the Manchester United revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Lukaku fired United into a two-goal lead against Crystal Palace on Wednesday and had a hand in the goal scored by Ashley Young which clinched a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park.

They were the first Premier League goals since early January for the Belgium international who seized a rare chance to shine at centre forward because Marcus Rashford was only fit enough to start on the bench.

'I just wanted to score, I'm a striker so I want to score goals,' said Lukaku. 'So I did what I had to do, but in the other goal I was involved in the build-up, and I created a couple of chances against Liverpool, so I knew it was coming. I'm happy that I helped the team.

'Football's not an individual sport, everybody tries to help. If you let your individual performances be more important than the team performance you'll not help the team. So for me it was all about doing my stuff for the team, so I'm happy I could help them win.

'I'm happy with my goals, happy with my performance, but I'm happy with the win. It was really important for us if you look at the other teams' results. We did what we had to do and now we have to keep going.'

Solskjaer has lifted the mood at Old Trafford with his natural energy, positive approach and respect for United's traditions.

He has also liberated players who appeared to have become stifled towards the end of Jose Mourinho's tenure, even those like Lukaku who have been restricted to fewer appearances because of Solskjaer's faith in Rashford.

'I like him,' said Lukaku. 'He's really open, really honest in his communication, and keeps me hungry.

'If you look at my career I've always had good strikers helping me, so now I'm here with Ole I'm learning a lot, and every day is another day to learn, another day to improve and that's how I see it.'

Manchester United are unbeaten in 11 Premier League games in 10 weeks under Solskjaer. They are fifth, a point behind Arsenal, with 10 games remaining and have their eyes on the top four.

Desire; the desire to improve and win games,' said Lukaku when asked about the secret to United's change in form.

'It's always, "next game, next game". We don't want to be like a couple of teams talking about things and not achieving; we want to do it game after game.

'It was time for other players to step up, which we did, and we won the game and now we have to move forward to the next game, hopefully keep the same level.

'Win games along the way, and when the injured players come back, that they help us to get where we want to get.'

Next up for Manchester United is Southampton at home on Saturday.

'I don't believe too much in these changes in the long term': Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho launches sly dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by suggesting his successor would struggle if he was appointed permanently

* Ex-Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho made sly dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Mourinho suggested Solskjaer would struggle if he got United job permanently
* United have won 13 of their 16 games since Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has launched a sly dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by suggesting that the Norwegian would struggle if he got the job permanently.

Mourinho was sacked by United in December, with Solskjaer taking over on a caretaker basis.

United have been hugely impressive under Solskjaer so far, winning 13 of their 16 games and losing just one.

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has aimed a sly dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Mourinho suggested that teams can have a positive reaction under a new caretaker boss

However, when discussing Scott Parker taking over as caretaker manager at Fulham following the departure of Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho indicated that clubs can sometimes receive an immediate boost from having a new manager.

'Can [Fulham] get a better manager than Claudio? Not at all,' Mourinho told beIN Sports.

'Can you compare the experience between Claudio and Scott, who is going to coach a team for the first time? Not at all.

'But sometimes in football, and you have the example with my former club (Man Utd hiring Solskjaer), that sometimes changes on the immediate - I don't believe too much in these changes in the long term - but these changes on the immediate, there are sometimes some positive results.'

Given how impressive Solskjaer has been so far, he will surely have a good chance of getting the United job permanently in the summer.

For now, Solskjaer is focused on attempting to end the season strongly. United are in fourth place in the Premier League and are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will face Wolves away.

United face a major challenge in the last-16 of the Champions League as they face Paris Saint-Germain away trailing 2-0 from the first leg.

Mourinho took over as United boss in 2016 and won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season in charge.

Matters turned sour this season, though, with Mourinho losing the faith of many of his players, including midfielder Paul Pogba.
