Manchester United to charge Sevilla fans EXTRA £35 for Champions League clash... and use money to help their fans afford trip to Spain after La Liga club hike prices up to £89

* Manchester United take on La Liga side Sevilla in the Champions League last-16
* The Spanish club are charging United fans £89 for the first leg next month
* United responded by matching the hike and using extra £35 to refund their fans
* That will see United supporters pay the £54 rival Liverpool fans were charged
* Now Sevilla have said they will subsidise their fans for the Old Trafford leg
* And they have been in contact with UEFA regarding the ticket allocation

The ticketing row between Manchester United and Sevilla has now led to both clubs subsidising costs for their own travelling fans.

The Spanish club sparked fury when they announced before Christmas that they would charge United supporters an extortionate £89 to see the Champions League first leg at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on February 21.

United negotiated with Sevilla in an attempt to reduce the cost, which is £35 more than Liverpool fans paid for their game in Seville in November.

Those talks broke down and early Wednesday it emerged that United had decided to charge Sevilla supporters the same £89 price for the March 13 return leg at Old Trafford. United said they would use money generated by that hike to refund £35 to their own travelling fans.

But later in the day, Sevilla responded by saying they too would subsidise tickets for their own fans heading to Old Trafford and added that no members would pay more than €60 (£53.11).

So rather than simply having reduced prices from the outset, fans of both sides will pay over the odds before receiving a subsidy.

Manchester United have decided to charge Sevilla fans £89 for their Champions League clash. The Spanish club sparked fury after setting 'exorbitant' prices last month for the last-16 tie

In a letter to fans United explained: 'We believe that our travelling supporters are unfairly being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club. Ultimately, Sevilla have not agreed to significantly lower the price to what we view as a reasonable level.

'Therefore, we have taken the difficult decision to charge Sevilla fans the same amount.'

Sevilla have also complained to UEFA over their allocation of 2,995 tickets for the return leg when they believe they should have had 3,800.

A spokesman for the Manchester United Supporters' Trust welcomed United's move and Sevilla's response.

He said: 'We are delighted United have fought our corner and are now working with the club to engage with UEFA to look at the non-member fees which have often been used to hike prices for our away fans.

'We are also glad that the actions taken by United have ultimately not led to Sevilla fans paying any more at Old Trafford either.'

United will refund £35 to their own supporters who have bought tickets for the first leg. That will mean their fans have paid the same amount as Liverpool's supporters paid in Spain

Quote:
MANCHESTER UNITED'S EMAIL TO SEVILLA TICKET HOLDERS

Further to our recent confirmation that you were successful for the Sevilla away game, we wanted to inform you of a change in what you will be charged for this game.

In this instance we believe that our travelling supporters are unfairly being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club. This view is shared generally amongst travelling supporters, and we have received lots of requests from individuals and supporter groups to intervene in this matter.

This has been raised with Sevilla, and internally, but ultimately Sevilla have not agreed to significantly lower the price of tickets for our fans to what we view as a reasonable level. Therefore we have taken the difficult decision to charge Sevilla fans for the return leg at Old Trafford the same amount as our fans have been charged for the away fixture.

We have decided to increase the ticket prices for Sevilla fans for the game at Old Trafford, and use this increase to subsidise our fans, as we want this to act as a deterrent to future opponents who look to increase ticket prices for our travelling supporters.

We will subsidise our travelling support by refunding the difference between the price charged (£89) and the price that was paid by Liverpool supporters in the Group Stage of this year's competition (£54). The £35 difference will be refunded prior to the game taking place.

As a result of the changes to ticket prices for away fans, should we gain any additional revenue after having refunded our supporters, we will donate this to the Manchester United Foundation.

I hope you are looking forward to the game, and we will follow-up shortly with details of ticket collections.

Many thanks for your continued, loyal support.

Manchester United set to meet UEFA to investigate escalating ticket prices after fiasco surrounding Champions League last-16 clash with Sevilla

* Manchester United have instigated a meeting with UEFA chiefs over ticket prices
* Sevilla revealed they would charge United fans £89 for a Champions League tie
* United responded by announcing they would refund fans by charging £89 too
* But United fans claim the club's prestige means they are always being ripped off

Manchester United are set for crunch talks with UEFA over escalating ticket prices in the Champions League.

Sportsmail understands United chiefs have instigated a meeting with Europe’s governing body following the fiasco surrounding next month’s tie against Sevilla.

Sevilla announced before Christmas that travelling supporters were to be charged a whopping £89 to watch the first leg in Spain on February 21.

United were incensed by that and committed to refunding fans £35 to bring the cost down. That is being subsidised by hiking prices up for Sevilla’s contingent at Old Trafford on March 13.

The La Liga club hit back and complained to UEFA that their allocation of 2,995 was inadequate.

But United’s grievances go further than Sevilla, with fans insistent they are constantly ripped off on the continent because of the club’s prestige.

Manchester United chiefs are set to meet UEFA to discuss escalating European ticket prices. Sevilla incensed United by charging away supporters £89 for their Champions League clash

Those who go abroad are often charged the highest possible price imposed on home fans who are not members of their club. Supporters say the numbers paying that exorbitant ‘non-member fee’ in the home ends are generally negligible.

And United are on the front foot after discussions with MUST (Manchester United Supporters' Trust). They hope to iron out issues with UEFA - who have agreed to the meeting - although there is an acceptance no change is likely before next season. It’s believed a simple tweak to regulations could alleviate existing problems.

UEFA are already investigating the €100 ticket Bayern Munich fans had to pay to see their side play at Anderlecht in November.
