Paul Pogba: a magician in a malignant formation at Manchester United
By Muhammad Butt Posted on September 11, 2016 - squawka

So Manchester United lost the Manchester Derby, Jose Mourinho was humiliated by Pep Guardiola and Paul Pogba did not play well.

Obviously there’s a lot being expected of the most expensive player in the world, mostly because he’s the most expensive player in the world. And in truth Pogba has the talent to live up to a lot of the hype, his skill-set is among one of the most unique around.

Pogba is all power and pace, except he’s also all technique and skill. It shouldn’t be possible to be that talented. If you tried to make him in create-a-player mode on your favourite video game you’d run out of allocated points before you could make him as good as he is.

Yet he hasn’t really shown his brilliance for Manchester United yet. Yeah, he was great in his debut against Southampton, but he didn’t really do anything beyond play well. No goals or assists. Against Hull he was downright poor, really. And against City?

Against City he languished for the first half, struggling like a Tyrannosaurus Rex caught in the multiple currents of a mighty river. People have been criticising Pogba for his terrible performance, but honestly, why would you put a T-Rex in a river? That’s the wrong environment.

Stop the 4-2-3-1

Which is to say, what the hell is Paul Pogba doing playing in defensive midfield in a 4-2-3-1? Aside from the general hideous nature of that formation, it is incredibly limiting on the two men deployed in the double pivot. They exist as shields, neither really possessing a license to attack with the kind of flair and freedom Pogba requires.

And if you’re not giving Paul Pogba license to attack with flair and freedom, why is he even in your team? Yes he can play defensive midfield, yes he can defend and play with responsibility but that is just part of his game (and the least fun part).

Pogba has said himself that he is at his best playing on the left side of a 4-3-3 midfield. That position tasks him with defensive responsibility, yes, but it gives him the freedom of expression. Knowing that there is a defensive midfielder holding and another midfielder who will have the good sense to cover him as he runs forward (and sometimes he can cover that midfielder).

When deployed in a 4-2-3-1, Pogba is either going to stay deep and waste his considerable talents as a holding midfielder, or he will surge forward and leave cavernous gaps behind him that his opponents will expose. The latter is what happened yesterday during the Manchester Derby, as City created untold havoc for the Red Devils in the spaces behind Pogba and Fellaini.

The 4-3-3 works

Put him in a 4-3-3 and then he has two midfielders who can cover him. It’s not rocket science. In the first half yesterday he went on a mazy run where he drifted by a couple of City midfielders and carried United up the field, bringing the crowd to life. It was a magical moment, and had he been playing in a 4-3-3 for the whole game we may have seen more of it.

Wayne Rooney, long-thought to be the main obstacle to playing 4-3-3, was deployed as a right-winger in the system against City (when United switched to it as a second half gambit to try and turn around the battering they had been receiving) and showed promise. He worked hard, he sent in multiple crosses. It’s not ideal but in a world where you can’t drop Wayne Rooney it might just be the best solution.

Well, it is the best solution. When you spend £89 million for a midfield maestro, and pay him £290,000 a week, you don’t then put him in a restrictive midfield role that doesn’t allow him to shine to his full potential.

Mourinho can talk about fluidity and Pogba having freedom, but everyone here has eyes, we can see that in games against robust sides all he’s doing is sticking a magnificent gleaming square peg into a dingy and depressing round hole. And you don’t do that either. At least you don’t if you’re a smart coach, which we all assumed Jose Mourinho to be. But hey, here we are.

Paul Pogba playing defensive midfield in a 4-2-3-1 is a T-Rex being asked to tap dance; an astrophysicist being asked to deadlift at the Olympics; a 19th century poet being asked to curate a tech start-up’s Snapchat account. Sure, he’ll give it a go but you’re seriously misusing an incredible talent, wasting his, yours and our time.

Stop doing that – it’s annoying.

Topiknya masih seputaran derby kemaren. Kembali lagi ke pertanyaan awal, 4231 atau 433? Pogba atau Rooney? 4231 berarti mengakomodir Rooney dan membuat Pogba sedikit mengalah. 433 berarti mengakomodir potensi terbaik Pogba tapi meminggirkan Rooney ke sayap (seperti babak II vs City).

Paul Pogba needs to be part of a midfield three and that can't happen with Wayne Rooney in the Manchester United team... they are not compatible

* Paul Pogba mostly played on the left of a midfield three at Juventus
* He usually had two 'proper' midfielders to support him in Italy
* With Wayne Rooney in the team, that isn't possible at Manchester United
* Rooney and Pogba were both poor in the defeat by Watford on Sunday
* They left Marouane Fellaini exposed defensively, without creating much
* Pair made two passes into the box between them, and no shots on target

When Juventus clinched their fifth straight Serie A title in April, they celebrated at the training ground, with Paul Pogba dancing on a table.

The Scudetto was sealed not while they were on the pitch, but by a Roma win over Napoli, meaning the Old Lady of Italian football could, once again, not be caught.

But the hard work had been done, by Pogba and Co, the previous day - as well as in the previous months - when they beat Fiorentina away from home.

That day Pogba lined up, as he tended to do at Juve, as part of a midfield three, alongside Sami Khedira and Mario Lemina.

Two months earlier, in another huge fixture, Pogba started on the left of a midfield four against Bayern Munich, this time alongside Khedira and Claudio Marchisio.

At home they earned a creditable 2-2 draw, and then away, this time with Hernanes in place of Marchisio, they raced into a two-goal lead, only to be knocked out in extra time having led going into the final seconds.

On all three occasions Pogba was the dominant player for his club, influencing the game, earning plaudits and establishing both himself and Juventus at Europe's top table.

On all three occasions, and indeed throughout his time at Juve, Pogba played, largely, on the left hand side. He was sometimes used in a three, sometimes in a four, but always influencing the game from the left.

Pogba struggled in a midfield alongside Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini. The midfielder flourished on the left of a midfield three for Juventus, but is in a new role now

He was never a winger. But his defensive contributions were limited by the presence of two 'proper' central midfielders, who could control the tempo of the game and protect the back four.

Contrast that to Pogba on Sunday, when his Manchester United side were not only beaten, but beaten comprehensively by Watford.

The Frenchman was nominally at the base of a 4-2-3-1 formation alongside Marouane Fellaini, while Wayne Rooney filled the most attacking midfield role.

Pogba shouldn't take too much blame for the defeat - he wasn't brilliant, but several of his team-mates were worse. He didn't give the ball away, as Anthony Martial did, for the first goal. He was in a decent position for the second, but could not quite intercept the cut-back towards Juan Camilo Zuniga. And he had perhaps United's best effort on goal, with a brutal drive which hit the bar in the first half.

But he wasn't at, and is still yet to produce, the level of performance of which we know he is capable. And it is quite possible that a large part of that could be down to his position at United.

Whereas at Juventus he always had two 'proper' midfielders alongside him, at United he has been shoehorned into a midfield three in which he is the central member.

Pogba's pass map for the game against Watford, with just one successful pass into the box

Rooney created only one chance from open play, and drifted all over in his midfield role

On Sunday he had Fellaini behind him, and Rooney in front. It might look good on paper, but in reality it was a recipe for disaster.

Take the first goal. When Martial has the ball, Pogba sets off down the left touchline to start a counter attack - precisely the kind of proactive move you can make if you are the foremost of a midfield three, or the left midfielder as part of a four.

But when Martial lost the ball - or, as Jose Mourinho would have it, was fouled - United were left with two of their midfield three, and their left back, miles ahead of the ball.

In swept Etienne Capoue, with Rooney 10 yards behind him, to put Watford ahead. Watford's central midfielder had space in the United box, as two of United's midfield trio roamed upfield.

Defensively, then, Pogba as part of a midfield two leaves United exposed, but that would matter less if going forward he and Rooney were able to create chances.

But the reality is that they aren't doing so. Pogba has yet to provide a goal or an assist this season. Rooney has managed two assists and one goal. Uninspiring stuff.

On Sunday Rooney created one chance from open play, Pogba none. They managed a combined two successful passes into the Watford box. Neither had a shot on target. Pogba barely managed a successful pass into the final third, while Rooney's involvement was peripheral at best.

United's average positions - Fellaini (27) was left isolated as both Pogba (6) and Rooney (10) wanted to be the most attacking midfielder (the positions of Anthony Martial, 11, and Marcus Rashford, 19, are distorted, as they both played wide but swapped wings throughout)

Both have had plenty of criticism this season, and the truth is that neither have been quite as bad as some pundits would like you to believe.

But both like to drift around the midfield, both need to be the most advanced player in a three - if Mourinho is determined to stick with the same formation - with two others doing the more responsible work to win the ball and dictate the play.

For now, it is Pogba who will get the more negative attention. He cost £100m, and is yet to show even a hint of producing play worth that much.

But Rooney has been poor too, and at 30, seven years older than his team-mate, he may be the man to miss out if Mourinho does adjust his system.

Whichever one is dropped, or moved, one thing is for sure. Playing them both as part of a midfield isn't working. For United to improve, something has to change.

kok kebanyakan menyoroti posisi Pogba yah
kalo saya sendiri lebih ragu ama Rooney sih, perannya belum benar2 maksimal
soal pendamping Pogba, Fellaini bagus sayang dia agak lambat, bahaya kalau counter attack

Mourinho: Herrera gives us “security” against counter attacks
By Jack Watson Posted on October 2, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hailed the impact of Ander Herrera on his side as he believes the Spaniard provides the “security” against counter attacks.

Herrera has been picked, once again, to start in midfield alongside world record signing Paul Pogba at Old Trafford today against Stoke City.

The Spanish midfielder was behind Marouane Fellaini in the pecking order at the start of the season but he’s quickly forced his way back into the team and shown Mourinho his ability.

The Portuguese coach has certainly been impressed with him as he has hailed his impact on the side, especially in the unglamorous role of breaking down opposition attacks.

"We need a player like Ander Herrera though. He is very fast on the transition and can give us the security against counter attacks," Mourinho said ahead of his side's league game with Stoke.

Herrera was superb against Leicester City at Old Trafford last week as the Red Devils got back on form with a 4-1 win against the reigning league champions.

With Wayne Rooney on the sidelines and not being dropped into midfield, it allows players like Herrera to escape his shadow and shine themselves.

Default Re: Taktik Manchester United Era Mourinho

Setelah main 4231 di awal musim kini United menggunakan taktik 433 dengan trio Herrera Carrick Pogba di tengah. Herrera jadi box to box kanan dan Pogba box to box dari kiri.
