Manchester United player ratings for the season so far: David de Gea ranks top... but Wayne Rooney is the worst

David de Gea ‒ 9
Praise be the fax machine that kept De Gea at Old Trafford. The goalkeeper has been United's best player this season and so nearly could have been at Real Madrid instead.

Sergio Romero ‒ 5
Nowhere near as good as De Gea and a good job that he wasn't forced to be United's No 1.

Matteo Darmian ‒ 5.5
Full back excellent in August but has been inconsistent since. Has looked uncomfortable when trying to attack down the left wing and short on confidence.

Marcos Rojo ‒ 6
More injury problems have been a major blow for Van Gaal, leaving him short at left back. A troubled season for him so far.

Chris Smalling ‒ 8
Has made more appearances (25) than any of his team-mates this season and has looked better for it. Captained them in Wolfsburg and stayed on the pitch, despite picking up a groin injury.

Phil Jones ‒ 6
Injury prone with only eight appearances this season. Needs to return if he is to have an impact.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson ‒ 7
Replaced the injured Darmian against Wolfsburg and did admirably in a tough Champions League tie. Only his second appearance but Van Gaal showed faith in the highly rated 18-year-old.

Paddy McNair ‒ 5.5
Barely featured this season and has been linked with a move to Wolves. Not had the breakthrough he wanted and was singled out by Van Gaal after giving away a goal recently.

Luke Shaw ‒ 7
Unfortunate to suffer such a terrible injury, particularly after looking so promising at left back. United need him to return as soon as possible.

Guillermo Varela ‒ 7
Very promising in their Champions League defeat by Wolfsburg. Like Borthwick-Jackson, it's a start. Varela was the first signing made by David Moyes and was handed his debut only last week.

Daley Blind ‒ 7
Third-most appearances (23) for United this season. Has looked better in a defensive role under Van Gaal and his long-range passing is underestimated. Good at set-pieces too.

Morgan Schneiderlin ‒ 8
Absent against Wolfsburg as United found out what Southampton have discovered this season: how much he can be missed in midfield. Important part of Van Gaal's plans and has been doing his job.

Bastian Schweinsteiger ‒ 6.5
Do Bayern Munich regret letting him leave? Singled out by Van Gaal recently but has ticked along OK in central midfield. You would expect more from a World Cup winner, though.

Marouane Fellaini ‒ 5
Used as a Plan B by Van Gaal against Wolfsburg. Consistently poor when used and never far away from throwing an elbow when contesting a header. Not suited to United, according to Paul Ince.


Ander Herrera ‒ 7.5
Another who was criticised by Ince but Herrera is underrated. Needs to be played more by Van Gaal, who cannot seem to realise the creative midfielder is the best they have.

Juan Mata ‒ 7.5
Strangely substituted in favour of Nick Powell at Wolfsburg, especially after showing himself to be one of United's most inventive players in 23 appearances this season.


Adnan Januzaj ‒ 6
Cutting his teeth on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Made four appearances in all competitions before he left. Could Van Gaal do with him now as back-up? Perhaps.

Nick Powell ‒ 6
What a game to make your first senior appearance for United since playing against MK Dons in the 4-0 defeat in August 2014. No pressure, then.

Andreas Pereira ‒ 6
Has potential but Van Gaal needs to nurture it. Powell was preferred to Pereira at Wolfsburg ‒ a questionable decision by the manager.

Memphis Depay ‒ 5.5
Has his moments but United expected more when they forked out £25m for him from PSV. No nearer to becoming the attacking force they think he can be.

Ashley Young ‒ 6.5
Fallen down the pecking order. Barely being given a chance by Van Gaal and is overlooked by the manager despite being one of the few to have improved under him. Work that one out.

Michael Carrick ‒ 5
Been woeful this season unfortunately, though it could be down to his age. The 34-year-old no longer looks cut out to compete at this level.

Antonio Valencia ‒ 6
Ten appearances this season but is currently injured, having not made an appearance since facing Manchester City in late October. Had to have surgery in November in a blow to Van Gaal.

Jesse Lingard ‒ 6.5
His inexperience can show but has looked promising when given the chance. Being handed a run in the first team and an England call-up is helping his confidence.

Javier Hernandez ‒ 6
Another sent on his way who would have been able to help United this season. Currently has 11 goals in 10 games for Bayer Leverkusen. Six out of 10 for his three appearances before leaving.

James Wilson ‒ 6
Just the two appearances for Wilson before joining Brighton on loan. His goal against Charlton in their 3-2 win was superb.

Anthony Martial ‒ 5.5
In terms of a striker who cost £36m (which could rise to £58m), he is not doing enough. In terms of a 20-year-old in his debut season in England, he arguably is. Scored against Wolfsburg but it was his first in eight games.

Wayne Rooney ‒ 4
The worst of the lot. No form at all and United's own fans have been begging for Van Gaal to drop their captain. Van Gaal's questionable tactics aren't helping either. Four out of 10 is probably kind.

From lacklustre Romelu Lukaku to sub-par Alexis Sanchez, the six Man United stars who have flopped during a poor start to the season

* Manchester United have endured a sub-standard start to the season
* Jose Mourinho's side languish eighth in the Premier League, adrift of their rivals
* Sunday's defeat by Manchester City was their fourth defeat in 12 league games
* While Mourinho has received criticism, some star players are also to blame
* Romelu Lukaku, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic among those under-performing

Manchester United's comprehensive defeat in the Etihad derby brought Jose Mourinho's side down to earth with quite a bump after victories over Juventus, Bournemouth and Everton had lifted the mood around Old Trafford.

It means United have lost four of their opening 12 top-flight games for the first time in 28 years and have a negative goal difference at this stage of the season for the first time since 1977.

Most of the flak has been aimed at Mourinho for his tactics and the way he uses the players at his disposal, but United's highly-paid squad are also responsible for the poor start.

Sportsmail takes a look at the biggest disappointments so far this season.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ

Mourinho said we wouldn't see the best of Sanchez until this season after he signed midway through the last campaign in January, but that simply hasn't happened.

Watching the Chilean climb off the bench to give another largely ineffective performance at the Etihad on Sunday, it was hard to believe that City battled so hard to get the 29-year-old before giving up the fight when United agreed to pay him £500,000-a-week.

Sanchez hasn't lost the talent that made him such a great player for Arsenal — there were glimpses of it against Juventus in Turin last week — but he hasn't produced it nearly enough to justify the effort made to bring him to Old Trafford.

FRED

Another player at the centre of a tug-of-war between the two Manchester clubs who has disappointed since choosing United.

The Brazilian cost £52million when he moved from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer but has done little to vindicate that transfer fee even in today's inflated market.

The 25-year-old has made just nine appearances and seven starts in all competitions, struggling to hold down the third midfield birth alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

When Mourinho needed a replacement for the injured Pogba against City, he opted for a half-fit Marouane Fellaini and left Fred as an unused substitute on the bench.

ROMELU LUKAKU

The big Belgian scored 27 goals in all competitions last season following a £75million move from Everton, but his output has dropped off significantly this term.

Lukaku has failed to find the net in 10 appearances since opening the campaign with four goals in his first five games.

He came off the bench to win United a penalty in the derby as Anthony Martial scored from the spot with United's solitary shot on target, but the former Everton man appears to have lost his confidence and touch in front of goal.

Some would argue that the powerful, bustling Lukaku will never be the world-class striker United need to compete at the highest levels of the game.

NEMANJA MATIC

The Serbian brought an element of stability to United's midfield alongside the more erratic Pogba last season after he making a £40m move from Chelsea to rejoin his old boss Mourinho.

Matic was an automatic starter and made the line-up for 35 of United's 38 Premier League games.

However, his form has dipped this term and it was no surprise to see reports that some of his team-mates are surprised by the loyalty shown by Mourinho this season in refusing to drop the 30-year-old midfielder.

His failure to pick up Ilkay Gundogan before the German scored City's third goal at the Etihad was typical of Matic's loss of form.

MARCUS RASHFORD

Mourinho understands the significance of keeping a homegrown player in the squad at United, and in that sense Rashford has become something of a dilemma for the manager: a young striker who doesn't always deserve the game time he is given.

There is no doubting Rashford's ability but he seems to have gone backwards under Mourinho. He looks unhappy in a wide role and struggles to make an impact when played through the middle, as he was at the Etihad.

While Rashford comes alive for England – with three goals in four games for his country this season – his performances for United have been less effective.

The late winner at Bournemouth earlier this month was a rare highlight in an otherwise disappointing season so far.

ERIC BAILLY

The disappearance of Eric Bailly will go down as one of the more intriguing mysteries of Mourinho's reign at Old Trafford.

For so long the warrior figure that Mourinho wants in his defence – think John Terry, Marco Materazzi and Pepe – Bailly has slipped down the pecking order and practically out of sight at Old Trafford.

It's understood the Ivory Coast defender upset his manager by withdrawing from the home defeat by West Brom in April due to illness and then reporting fit for training.

He briefly regained his place this season but was substituted after just 19 minutes against Newcastle last month with United two goals behind.

Former Old Trafford favourite Rio Ferdinand predicted that it was the end of Bailly's career at United, and he may well be right.
