Manchester United AGREE £60m deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid on a four-year contract, with Brazilian's medical to take place over the weekend as Erik ten Hag's search for a defensive midfielder FINALLY nears an end

* Casemiro has won five Champions League crowns in nine years at Real Madrid
* Leaving for Manchester United would mean missing out on the competition
* However, he has been tempted by a four-year deal and the option of another year
* Real would look to replace the Brazilian with Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes

Manchester United have agreed a £60million deal for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro after a breakthrough in talks.

A medical is scheduled for the weekend and the Brazil international will sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year.

Casemiro told coach Carlo Ancelotti of his decision to join United as the two met for talks on Wednesday evening after the 30-year-old was informed by Madrid president Florentino Perez that he could choose whether he wished to stay or go.

Ancelotti values Casemiro highly and is loath to see him go as he has been instrumental to Madrid's tactical set-up, winning 18 titles during his nine seasons there.

However, the midfielder is excited by the prospect of a new challenge in the Premier League of helping to revive United's flagging fortunes while the lucrative figures on offer make economic sense for the club and player.

Casemiro has three years left on his contract with Real but following the signing of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco his place is under threat. Casemiro was on the bench last week with Tchouameni starting.

A United delegation travelled to the Spanish capital earlier this week to sound out Madrid's hierarchy about the prospective move and hope to have it completed by Monday.

Though Casemiro is not the profile of player United had first pursued, Erik ten Hag believes his experience and knowledge can prove invaluable to his new team.

Manchester United have agreed a £60million deal for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro. He has spent his entire European career with Real Madrid bar a brief loan spell with Porto. Erik ten Hag has moved on to Casemiro after failing in his pursuit of Frenkie de Jong

United had wanted a ball-playing number six but Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong is more inclined to join Chelsea should he leave while the demands of Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot were considered too high.

Once Casemiro is agreed, United will focus on adding a forward, right-back and back-up goalkeeper.

They retain an interest in loaning Christian Pulisic from Chelsea but have not held further talks at this stage. Atletico Madrid's Yannick Carrasco has been discussed also this week while Ajax forward Antony and Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven remain targets.

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is the latest option to be discussed as cover for David de Gea.

Southampton are pressing to sign midfielder James Garner while defender Eric Bailly looks increasingly likely to join Marseille as they discuss a loan with option to buy for the centre-back.

Madrid are reportedly considering replacements for Casemiro as his transfer to United moves closer.

Despite having signed 22-year-old Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer the club, according to Diario AS, have made Bruno Guimaraes their No 1 option.

Newcastle's Brazilian international is on a short list of names that also includes Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

Betis need to sell because they are currently over their permitted squad spend and unable to register new signings Willian Jose, Luiz Henrique and Luiz Felipe.

Adding physicality will be a plus for United after they were bullied in their 4-0 loss to Brentford on Saturday night.

Ten Hag received criticism after the game for starting such a small team in West London, with the selection of 5ft 9in centre back Lisandro Martinez proving especially unpopular.

Red Devils fans will be hoping for a much improved performance when they take on Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday.

Manchester United CONFIRM they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid over the huge £70million signing of Casemiro... with midfielder set to undergo a medical this weekend

* Manchester United have confirmed an agreement is in place to sign Casemiro
* The midfielder is set to join from Real Madrid for £70million on a four-year deal
* The signing will end the Red Devils' long-running search for a central midfielder

Manchester United have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The deal is subject to visa requirements, a medical and the agreement of personal terms, but the 30-year-old is keen to move to Old Trafford, as confirmed by Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti today.

United posted on their club website: 'We all look forward to welcoming Casemiro to Old Trafford.'

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is close to joining Manchester United in a £70million deal. The arrival of the Brazilian midfielder will be a welcome boost to United boss Erik ten Hag. United, who have lost their first two games of the season, have been looking for a midfielder

Erik ten Hag's side have been searching for a central midfielder all summer, but have been repeatedly rebuffed by several targets.

They first chased Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but off-the-field issues got in the way and they were eventually forced to give up their pursuit.

Personal terms then prevented Juventus star Adrien Rabiot moving to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils have finally completed a deal, with Casemiro set to join the club officially next week.

The midfielder won five Champions League titles during his stay in Spain with Madrid

Ancelotti accepted he had lost one of his star men today, saying: 'I have spoken to him and he wants to try something new. The club is being understanding because of the type of person that Casemiro is.

'Negotiations are on-going and there is nothing decided yet but his desire to leave is clear.

'If he goes there is no doubt about the respect and affection that exists for him here. If someone as nice, and serious, and professional as Casemiro leaves then you are sad but you understand and we respect him and his decision.'

Real Madrid - who posted a thank you video dedicated to the midfielder on social media this evening - are rumoured to be interested in signing Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a replacement.

The agreement comes after Casemiro told Real Madrid on Wednesday evening that he wished to move to Erik ten Hag's team after nine glorious years in the Spanish capital.

The deal is set to be worth £70million, with the Brazilian due to sign a four-year deal at the club.

He has played over 500 professional games during his career, including 63 at international level for his Brazil.

He has also won 17 major honours, including five Champions League titles and the Copa America.

Peter Schmeichel admits he's 'SURPRISED' that Man United have signed £70m Casemiro... insisting Erik ten Hag would have been better off signing a proven Premier League player

* Casemiro is expected to join Manchester United from Real Madrid for £70m
* Peter Schmeichel has questioned the midfielder's lack of Premier League nous
* He would have signed 'someone we know can play in the Premier League'
* Manchester United are currently bottom of the Premier League and pointless

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed his 'surprise' at seeing his former club pursuing Real Madrid's Casemiro.

United have been linked with a number of central midfielders over the summer, most notably Frenkie de Jong, and now appear to be close to bringing one in.

Casemiro is set to join the club for £70 million, pending the completion of his medical and visa application.

Not everyone is convinced by the 30-year-old Brazilian, though. Peter Schmeichel told BBC Sport: 'I'm surprised that this player is being mentioned at that amount of money and on those wages, at that age, when we don't know if he can do the job.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is expected to join Manchester United for £70 million. Peter Schmeichel has doubts about the move, questioning his lack of Premier League nous

'Maybe sign someone who we know can play in the Premier League for now, and then next season look at someone like Casemiro next year, who is also an exciting player to watch.'

The Red Devils have generally looked outside of the Premier League for squad improvements this summer, although they were briefly interested in Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves.

Assuming Casemiro does sign for United, he will face a tough task in making the team competitive again.

Erik ten Hag's side currently sit bottom of the Premier League after two games and are yet to pick up a point. They were heavily criticised after being beaten 4-0 by Brentford last Saturday.

United will face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday, as both sides look to register first Premier League wins of the season.

Casemiro is 'NOT the answer' to Man United's problems, insists Liverpool legend Didi Hamann - as he claims it will take 'years and years' of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market before they will challenge for big trophies

* Didi Hamann has called Man United's signing of Casemiro 'a small step forward'
* Hamann said that it will be years before United are challenging for titles again
* The Liverpool legend made 280 appearances during his seven years at Anfield
* Casemiro joined United this week after nine trophy-laden years at Real Madrid

Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has hailed Manchester United new boy Casemiro as a great player, but warned that the marquee signing will not lead to title success.

Casemiro has joined Manchester United this week for a fee of £70million from Real Madrid, after an otherwise difficult transfer window during Erik ten Hag's first season in charge of the Red Devils.

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of United's game against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday, Hamann explained his view that signing Casemiro will not turn Ten Hag's squad into title contenders:

'Casemiro is a great player - you only have to look at what he has won at Madrid. But he isn't going to United to win the league, is he?

'We're only two games into the season and it's already obvious that United aren't going to be anywhere near the title race. They are years behind Liverpool and Manchester City - and they are losing ground on Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal as well.'

The former Germany international, who scored in the penalty shootout of Liverpool's legendary 2005 Champions League win, insisted that it will take 'years and years' for United to return to Premier League contention:

Didi Hamann has insisted that Casemiro is not the answer to Manchester United's problems. The Liverpool Legend hailed Casemiro as a 'great player' but said it will be years before United return to title contention

'Signing Casemiro is a small step forward - but he's not the answer. It is going to take years and years of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market before United are challenging for the big trophies again.

'But that's been obvious since [Sir Alex] Ferguson retired - and look at how many managers they have sacked in the process.' He added.

After a tumultuous transfer window that has seen United miss out on top target Frenkie de Jong and with speculation still ongoing over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, the signing of Casemiro will no doubt be seen as a coup for Ten Hag's side.

However, as the transfer for the Brazilian midfielder was not completed in time for Friday's registration deadline, Casemiro will not feature for his new club against Liverpool on Monday.

Default Re: Carlos Henrique Casimiro (Casemiro)

Casemiro has earned the right to decide when his trophy-laden Real Madrid career ends... there is no anger towards the Brazilian as he heads for Man United and his huge £70m transfer is seen as a final act of service

* Man United have reached an agreement to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid
* Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday night that a £70m deal is nearing completion
* But there is no bitter sentiment directed towards the midfielder out in Spain
* Madrid fans believe Casemiro has earned the right to embark on a new challenge

After eight straight trophy-laden years as Real Madrid's midfield lynchpin, Casemiro has earned the right to try a new challenge aged 30 and bringing in £70million to the club in the process is being seen as a last act of service in an incredible career in Spain.

The lack of any anger towards him, as he prepares to jump ship just two weeks before the window closes, is a measure of the esteem in which Madrid supporters hold him.

The club are not overly upset either – they do not regret letting Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos go and they think getting a big fee for Casemiro makes the same sort of sense.

Time will tell if they are right to believe that. The last holding midfield colossus the club had was Claude Makelele and they took years to properly replace him. Casemiro could play at the top for another five years while Madrid struggle to fill the vacancy. But €80m (£68m) spent in the summer on Aurelien Tchouameni has convinced them they are well prepared.

Newcastle supporters need not be too concerned about losing Bruno Guimarães because as things stand the club has no intention of spending the money they get for Casemiro on anyone else. Tchouameni and the very highly-rated Eduardo Camavinga are the future in the middle of the pitch for the Spanish champions.

Casemiro is set to sign for Man United after they reached an agreement with Real Madrid. There is no anger directed towards the midfielder, who has won 18 titles at Madrid, in Spain

Supporters of Barcelona in particular are envious of Madrid's apparent lack of sentimentality with these players who have won everything at the club but are allowed to leave without a tear shed.

They never got a euro for Lionel Messi when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain and have Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba on long contracts they intend to see out. It's one of the reasons why one club has sailed fairly calmly through the pandemic and the other hit an economic iceberg.

Casemiro's decision to leave has also not surprised that many people. He has played his entire European career at Real Madrid save for one season at Porto, where he had Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui.

This is not the first time that there has been a sense that he wanted another adventure. Had Zinedine Zidane taken the PSG job then he may well have ended up there.

There is no anger on his part that the club bought Tchouameni in the summer. It goes with the territory that there are two international players for every position and in recent seasons he has actually been the exception in the squad with no real back-up.

Madrid supporters believe Casemiro has earned the right to embark on a new challenge. The arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni has threatened Casemiro's place in the Los Blancos side. The Brazil international has therefore decided the time is right to move on this summer

But the arrival of Tchouameni has served as a reminder that time waits for no player. He also only has to look around the dressing room to know that once into his thirties the club become increasingly less keen to offer long deals.

Luka Modric has accepted year-on-year renewals but he was also tempted by a longer contract when Inter became interested a few seasons ago.

Clubs from other supporters have joked that from this weekend, players can play with rolled down socks and no shin pads with Casemiro gone. In truth he has never been a hatchet man. He was the master of the half-foul, enough to break play up, but often not enough for a booking and never enough for a straight red (he never received one in his Madrid career).

This is a new challenge for Casemiro – what more can he do at Real Madrid after winning the Champions League five times with them? Last season he was not at his best but he still managed to be one of Madrid's best players as they beat Liverpool in the final.

United are signing a player widely regarded as the best holding midfielder – along with Sergio Busquets – in Spain, but they will be getting so much more.

Casemiro scores goals. The imperious midfield triangle of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and the Brazilian is often flipped in games so that it's Casemiro who is furthest forward. He only scored once last season but managed 10 in the league across the previous two campaigns.

And above all they will be getting a modest pro whose humility belies what he has become at Madrid, one-third of the greatest midfield the club has ever had. He is a player so well respected at the club that when Real Madrid got wind of United's approach earlier this week their reaction to him was: you decide.

'I am excited to develop at a big club like Man United... but I'll come back one day': Emotional Casemiro breaks down in his Real Madrid farewell, struggling to speak as he heads for a £70m exit

* Casemiro bid an emotional farewell to Real Madrid as he prepares for his move
* The 30-year-old midfielder will join Manchester United in a deal worth £70m
* He said: 'The greatest title I have is coming to train every morning at this club'
* Casemiro fought back tears and promised he would 'come back one day'

Casemiro bid an emotional farewell to Real Madrid on Monday morning, but vowed to come back one day to the club where he spent nine prosperous years.

He won 12 major trophies with Los Blancos, including three LaLiga titles and an incredible five Champions Leagues.

The 30-year-old midfielder will join Manchester United for £70 million and is expected to be unveiled ahead of their clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford tonight.

Both Casemiro and his wife were visibly emotional during the midfielder's farewell event

The 30-year-old midfielder won five Champions League trophies in his time in Madrid. Casemiro will leave Real Madrid for £70 million after a stellar nine years with Los Blancos

After struggling to start the speech at his official farewell on Monday, an emotional Casemiro said: 'When I left Sao Paulo, it was clear to me that I would play in Real Madrid's first team. Here I built my life, my family.

'The greatest title I have achieved is coming to train every morning at this club. As you know, I don't like the spotlight or being in the spotlight, I'll try to speak from my heart.

'If I talk about teammates, I can't not talk about: Modric and Kroos. We've won a lot and we've really enjoyed playing together.'

As well as reminiscing on his time at Real, Casemiro looked to his future in the Premier League. He said: 'I am excited to develop at a big club like Manchester United. I'm sure one day I'll come back. I want to give back all the love they gave me.'

Fiorentino Perez called Casemiro 'one of our most special and important players'

Real Madrid President Fiorentino Perez also spoke at the event. He said: Casemiro 'is one of our most special and important players in the last decade.

'I will never forget your performance against Borussia Dortmund. You've become one of our most important players, today is a very special day for Real Madrid.'

United fans will be relieved that their search for a defensive midfielder is finally complete, and hoping he can make his debut as soon as possible.

The Red Devils currently sit 19th in the Premier League and will be gunning for their first points of the season against winless Liverpool on Monday night.
