Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'to have funds to strengthen Man United's midfield in January transfer window' after missing out on £50m-rated Sean Longstaff

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains keen to add to his midfield options this season
* Reports have said he will 'have funds to strengthen' in the January window
* Man United missed out on getting £50m-rated Sean Longstaff this summer

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could find himself with 'funds available' to strengthen his midfield in January.

The Norwegian was keen to bolster in central areas this summer with Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff a name that was continually linked with a £50million move.

But after failing to add any new faces in midfield - and after a difficult start to the new season - the Manchester Evening News have reported that club chiefs could allow Solskjaer to make a high-profile acquisition in the winter window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to have funds made available to buy a midfielder in January. United retained an interest in £50m-rated Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer

United's midfield options have become younger since Ander Herrera departed on a free and players such as Scott McTominay and James Garner emerged in the first-team set-up.

The club have targeted young players with 21-year-old pair Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both arriving under Solskjaer this summer.

And so Longstaff, 21, is seen as another homegrown talent that could excel in his development at United, should a deal be struck with Newcastle.

United have endured a testing start to the new season with one win, two draws and one defeat from their opening four games.

After the £73m sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan on deadline day, Solskjaer is expected to see that money come the January transfer window in a bid to add strength to his youthful midfield.

The MEN report goes on to add that Solskjaer and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward convened earlier in September to discuss potential targets for next year, both in midfield and in attack with fears the side lack goals following Lukaku's summer exit.

Gutless and completely lost, Fred and Andreas Pereira were the epitome of a largely woeful Manchester United performance at Bramall Lane

* Manchester United were outclassed for large portions against Sheffield United
* Fred and Andreas Pereira in particular struggled in the centre of the park
* Scott McTominay's stock went up on Sunday, and that's without even playing

Without even playing, Scott McTominay’s rising stock just went up again. A man who would have relished coming here. The rescue act might not have been required had he been available.

Credit to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who recognised the need to correct his midfield at half-time, but Sunday was further proof of how woefully short Manchester United are in that area.

For much of this, they were gutless in the middle of the park. ‘Forged in steel,’ is proudly printed everywhere inside Bramall Lane. United, by contrast, appeared to be forced together with playdough as Andreas Pereira and Fred toiled as a partnership.

Manchester United's Fred looks on despondently after Sheffield United open the scoring

Fred and midfield partner Andreas Pereira, who was taken off in the second-half, struggled

Sheffield United flood midfield and their visitors looked like drowning. Solskjaer rightly points towards injuries in that area – Paul Pogba watched this defeat on a mobile stream of ESPN in Miami, Nemanja Matic still is not fit – but was initially let down by those he picked.

Pereira and Fred were completely lost, wondering what had hit them, as if they had not paid any attention to the Premier League with Sheffield United in it this season. McTominay, meanwhile, can mix the physicality that games like these pose with invention in possession.

Fred struggled both with and without the ball as Sheffield Utd bypassed Man Utd's midfield

United surrendered any authority on proceedings they might have owned with Solskjaer’s team selection. He admitted his mistake when one down at the break, introducing Jesse Lingard. They gained more control as a result and the three goals in seven minutes were devastating, only to then concede an equaliser in stoppage time.

That is the least the hosts deserved after sussing United out in the opening 10 minutes, sitting in and allowing them possession. Once both Pereira and Fred failed to execute simple passes through the lines, gifting cheap ball away, they knew this was there for the taking.

Time and again you looked at United’s midfield and wondered quite how it had come to this – Pereira the guilty party on countless occasions.

If he was not merely mirroring the ball’s path for the first goal – eventually seen skipping on the edge of his box – then he was having his pocket picked by John Fleck. At one point he somehow managed to simultaneously jump and cower from an aerial ball.

Pereira was also culpable for the second, minutes into the second half, when his heavy touch allowed Lys Mousset to gallivant forward and eventually whip beyond David De Gea.

McTominay’s ankle problem is likely to keep him out for another couple of weeks yet and a reunion with his great champion Jose Mourinho when Tottenham arrive at Old Trafford on December 4 seems unlikely. Solskjaer must be dreading that already and counting down the days until January.

Manchester United MUST strengthen midfield in January, says Gary Neville, after Fred and Andreas Pereira have a howler against Sheffield United: 'It's a problem... it's just not good enough'

* Man United produced a poor performance in 3-3 draw at Sheffield United
* Gary Neville has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to strengthen their midfield
* Fred and Andreas Pereira struggled on Sunday in Scott McTominay's absence
* Neville also believes United need a new left-back and a new striker

Gary Neville has bemoaned the lack of quality in Manchester United's 'problem' midfield and says they must strengthen the area urgently.

United's weaknesses under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were exposed by Sheffield United on Sunday with the Blades dominating for the first hour at Bramall Lane.

A stunning three-goal burst in the space of seven minutes then completely flipped the game on its head before Oli McBurnie's late goal salvaged a thoroughly deserved point for the Blades.

Gary Neville believes Manchester United need to strengthen their midfield in January. Fred struggled to get a grip on the midfield battle as United drew 3-3 with Sheffield United

And United's abject performance exposed problem areas that Solskjaer needs to address in the next two transfer windows.

Their midfield duo of Fred and Andreas Pereira - playing in the injury absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba - looked ill-equipped for the work ethic and muscle of Sheffield United's side.

Old Trafford legend Neville told Sky Sports: 'The midfield's just a problem for United full stop, let's be clear about it.

'Even with Scott McTominay in it's a problem. They haven't strengthened in that area, obviously Pogba's injured.

Andreas Pereira similarly struggled as United were fortunate to leave with a point on Sunday

United were without key midfielder Scott McTominay after he picked up an injury

'It's a problem for them and it's just not good enough, the midfield just doesn't have good enough quality.

'They need a striker, they need two midfield players, they need a left-back - they need five or six signings.

'They can't do that until January and obviously the summer but the midfield will not go away as a problem for Manchester United just because of an injury.

'It's a problem full stop - it needs strengthening.'

Key midfielder Paul Pogba remains on the sidelines with an ankle injury

United have been linked with the likes of West Ham's Declan Rice and Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff as they look to bolster their midfield options.

They sit ninth in the Premier League table as things stand, nine points off Chelsea in fourth.

Manchester United 'draw up three-man shortlist' for new playmaker with James Maddison, Donny van de Beek and Jack Grealish all potential summer targets... as club consider giving in by finally selling wantaway Paul Pogba

* Man United draw up a three-man playmaker shortlist for the summer window
* The Red Devils are interested in England duo Jack Grealish and James Maddison
* Ajax's midfield maestro Donny van de Beek is also a potential target for United
* However, a move for any three would likely signal the end of Paul Pogba's stay

Manchester United have identified the three playmakers they could make a move for in the summer, according to reports.

Having whittled down a long list of names at the start of January, United see Jack Grealish, Donny van de Beek and James Maddison as the main targets once the window reopens in the summer.

However, a move for any three of these midfielders would likely see Paul Pogba's second stint at the club come to an end, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Man United identify Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Donny van de Beek as summer targets

The report suggests that United are keen to bring in competition for Bruno Fernandes – who is close to finalising a £60million January move from Sporting.

Van de Beek's contract at Ajax runs until 2022 but the Dutchman would only realistically be interested if United qualify for the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also hoping to lure Maddison away from the King Power Stadium.

The English playmaker has seen his value rocket having established himself as a key member of the Foxes' side as they look set to secure Champions League football next season.

United are said to be open to negotiating a move in January but reports suggest that the club accept that is unlikely, and will instead focus their efforts on signing him come the summer.

Maddison's current deal runs until 2023 and while Leicester will be under no pressure to sell him, they will know they may need to make a show of commitment to him to keep suitors like United at bay.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers addressed talk of Maddison leaving in January and dismissed it out of hand.

'James is a very talented player and he will be here in January and beyond,' he said.

'He's a player we're keen to keep here and help us on this journey over the next few years.

'James and his representatives are speaking with the club. These things take time but his level has not dropped. He is playing at a high level. There's no pressure to sell and no need to sell.'

United's other target is Aston Villa talisman Grealish.

Like Maddison, Grealish has also been linked with a winter move to Old Trafford but his £70m valuation may put United off.

The Villa captain has been a long-time target of United's, and they could look to him to solve their midfield crisis - with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata looking past their best.

Manchester United's goal-shy midfield has shown why they need Bruno Fernandes... fans will hope the reason super agent Jorge Mendes was at Old Trafford was to seal the £60m transfer

* Manchester United are understood to be offering £50m plus £10m in add-ons
* Mendes has been at the centre of talks between Sporting Lisbon and United
* Red Devils are keen to solve their chronic shortage of goals from midfield
* Juan Mata's winner against Wolves in the FA Cup was something of a rarity

The sight of Jorge Mendes in the directors' box at Old Trafford on Wednesday night was perhaps no surprise given his involvement at Wolves, but it is the super agent's connection to Bruno Fernandes that will interest Manchester United fans far more.

Mendes has been at the centre of negotiations between Sporting Lisbon and United, who are understood to be offering £50million plus £10m in add-ons to sign Fernandes in the January transfer window.

One look at the 25-year-old's stats will tell you why United are so keen to bring in Fernandes six months early to solve their chronic shortage of goals from midfield.

Manchester United have offered £50m plus £10m in add-ons for midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Agent Jorge Mendes was spotted in the directors' box at Old Trafford on Wednesday night

Last season, he established himself as the most prolific midfielder in Europe with 32 goals and 18 assists in 53 appearances for Sporting. He has continued in a similar vein this term with 15 goals and 13 assists in 25 matches.

Even taking into account the difference between Portugal and the Premier League, those figures are in stark contrast to United's midfielders who have relied heavily on Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood to carry the goal scoring burden this season.

Juan Mata may have scored the decisive goal to take United into the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Wolves, but it was something of a rarity - and not only because it was only the little Spaniard's second of the season.

After a total of 174 appearances in this campaign, eight midfielders - Mata, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Fred, Scott McTominay and Dan James - have now scored a meagre 10 goals between them.

United's drab midfield display against Wolves showed just why they need to sign Fernandes

McTominay, a defensive midfielder, is the joint leading scorer among them with three, although he is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

James also has three but the last of them came back in August. Although the summer signing has been a big positive this season, his form has dipped of late and he missed several chances against Wolves.

Pereira's screamer against Brighton in November remains his only goal of the campaign to date having finished last season with only one goal to his name. Lingard also has one but he is without a Premier League goal in 13 months.

Fred and Matic have yet to score between them from a combined total of 39 games. Pogba is still waiting to get off the mark after contributing 16 goals last season, although in the Frenchman's defence he has played only eight games due to an ankle problem that required surgery.

With all that in mind, it's hardly surprising that United failed to muster a single shot on target at Wolves when the first instalment of this third-round tie finished goalless at Molineux earlier this month.

They created more opportunities in the replay but James wasted the best of them. The game was only a few minutes old when he raced into the box and touched the ball past John Ruddy only to see the Wolves keeper get a vital touch on the ball that prevented him going through on an open goal.

James found himself facing Ruddy again three minutes before half-time when he sprang the offside trap and controlled Fred's throughball inside the penalty box. The keeper stood tall again though and managed to keep the ball out as James attempted to lift it over him.

The Wales winger had another clear sight of goal seven minutes after the break when he accelerated into the box again but this time dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Ruddy also denied Mata with a smart save in the 28th minute but he was helpless to stop United's No 8 from scoring the decisive goal in the 67th minute.

Harry Maguire played the ball upfield and Martial turned Conor Coady to break over halfway. The Frenchman sent Mata away and he drew Ruddy before showing great composure to dink the ball over the keeper.

It was the first goal scored by a United player other than Rashford, Martial and Greenwood in 10 games since Mata and Ashley Young were on target against AZ Alkmaar a month ago.

That's why United are so keen to sign Fernandes. And, their fans will hope, why Mendes was sat in the directors' box on Wednesday night.

'He's not going to even get in the team': Paul Ince says Paul Pogba 'ISN'T NEEDED' at Manchester United with £68m Bruno Fernandes starring in midfield in his absence

* Paul Ince thinks Paul Pogba will find it hard to get back into the Man United team
* Bruno Fernandes has had an instant impact on United since joining the club
* The former Sporting Lisbon man has played eight games - scoring three times
* Pogba has made just seven appearances this season because of an ankle injury

Paul Ince believes Paul Pogba will struggle to get back into the Manchester United team when he returns from injury.

The World Cup winner has struggled with an ankle problem which has restricted him to just seven appearances this season - the last of which came on Boxing Day.

In his absence, Fernandes has become an instant fan favourite at Old Trafford since signing for £68m from Sporting Lisbon and Ince thinks Pogba will struggle to fit into the United team now.

'Fans thought Paul Pogba was going to be the star. But, look how that panned out,' Ince told Paddy Power.

'If he still wants to leave I’d say it would be far easier for Ole to do so now that Bruno is around. It doesn’t feel like they need him anymore.

'His truly great games have been few and far between, so the current situation could suit club and player.

'If he does come back before the end of the season, he’s not even going to get in the team. He’s going to have to fight for his place – if he even gets one.'

Paul Ince believes Paul Pogba will struggle to get back into the Manchester United team. Bruno Fernandes has become an instant fan favourite at Old Trafford since signing for £68m. Ince thinks it will be easier for United to move Pogba on if he still wants to leave the club

Former United midfielder Lee Sharpe agrees with Ince as he believes Pogba will have no place in their team if Jack Grealish is recruited in the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been considering midfielders to sign in the summer and has been tipped to bring in Villa playmaker Grealish.

'I am guessing he [Grealish] would be there to replace Pogba,' Sharpe told Gentingbet.com

'If Grealish comes and they are playing Fernandes, there is no room in the team really for someone like Pogba, I think that is probably a little bit too many creative players.

Fernandes has scored three times for the Red Devils and provided three assists for his team-mates - one of which was for Anthony Martial's opener in the Manchester Derby on Sunday.

Ince himself made over 200 appearances for United where he won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup twice.

How Bruno Fernandes holds the key to Paul Pogba's future: Manchester United believe midfield partnership between two star men could spark Frenchman into life... and pave the way for him to sign a bumper new deal

* Paul Pogba has been repeatedly linked with move away from Manchester United
* But combination with Bruno Fernandes in midfield could persuade him to stay
* United are desperately hoping both can flourish in tandem when play restarts
* If they can form a strong partnership, Pogba may explore a contract extension

Manchester United believe Paul Pogba's mouthwatering midfield partnership with Bruno Fernandes will hold the key towards the Frenchman's long-term future.

Pogba and Fernandes are yet to play together because the Portuguese star's arrival at Old Trafford coincided with the World Cup winner's ankle injury.

The France star has now fully recovered and believes his pending combination with Fernandes can spark improvements for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

Fernandes has had a major impact on United since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January and Pogba feels the his presence has helped the team gel.

Pogba's existing deal expires at the end of next season but United have the option to extend his contract by 12 months.

The club are yet to activate the clause, which would prevent the possibility of Pogba signing a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January.

United, though, are expected to trigger the renewal at the end of the season even if it's merely to protect his value.

Manchester United are hoping to see Paul Pogba flourish in tandem with Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes has hit the ground running at United but is yet to play alongside Pogba. Real Madrid and Juventus are possible destinations but Pogba could yet extend his deal. Fernandes could become a significant figure in team-mate Pogba's long-term thinking

Pogba's future has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent months and he has been regularly linked with Real Madrid and a return to Juventus.

However, Sportsmail understands the prospect of playing with Fernandes will likely become a significant factor in Pogba's long-term thinking.

If the pair can flourish in tandem as the season resumes, there is likely to be a willingness from both United and Pogba to explore the possibility of an extension past 2022.

Despite the financial crisis that has gripped football because of the coronavirus, Pogba remains one of the most sought after players in the world.

United, though, would want close to £100million for the player, a fee that is likely to be unreachable given the current climate.

So an explosive start to the Pogba/Fernandes partnership could prove one of the key factors in the France star's long-term future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'ready to unleash Paul Pogba as a No 10' at Manchester United after plotting how to fit the World Cup winner alongside Bruno Fernandes in a new-look midfield

* Paul Pogba has been given a new position by boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Solskjaer has worked out how to fit Pogba and Bruno Fernandes into his team
* Frenchman will be used as a No 10 while Fernandes will play in a midfield three
* Solskjaer wants duo to form partnership amid United's bid to finish in top four

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly lined up Paul Pogba to play as his No 10 in a bid to fit the French World Cup winner in Manchester United's midfielder alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Pogba is back to full fitness from a persistent ankle injury and Solskjaer is hoping he can strike up a formidable partnership with Fernandes when the season returns later this month.

United are relying on their two star players to help fire them to a Champions League spot with Solskjaer's men currently sat fifth, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Paul Pogba will be given a new role in Manchester United's team when the season resumes

Solskjaer has been working on a system where he can play Pogba and Fernandes together and has settled on deploying the former in a new attacking midfield role, according to The Sun.

Pogba has already been prepped to play in that role, having featured in behind the central striker during last Saturday's intra-squad friendly game at Old Trafford.

The report claims that the 27-year-old, who has not played a competitive game since Boxing Day, is not yet up to match speed but impressed Solskjaer in that position.

Bruno Fernandes will play as a No 8 while Pogba will be used in behind the central striker. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to find way of playing the two midfielders together

Pogba has been used as a No 10 on several occasions during his United career with many of the opinion he is better player when given more freedom - but has never consistently operated in that role.

He and Fernandes - a £68million January arrival from Sporting Lisbon who was supposedly signed to replace Pogba - will be the central figures in United's new-look midfield.

Portuguese star Fernandes is an attack-minded midfielder with goalscoring and creative attributes, but Solskjaer has decided to play him behind Pogba as part of a midfield three in a No 8 playmaker role.

Fernandes has been an instant success at Old Trafford, scoring three goals and registering four assists in the nine games he played before the season was suspended.

Solskjaer admitted last month he was excited about the prospect pairing Fernandes and Pogba, saying: 'We have an exciting squad. Bruno coming in and making the impact he made was great for everyone, it was a boost for the club.

'Good players can always play together, so yes Paul and Bruno can certainly.

'We will find a good connection between them, we have discussed it as a coaching team.'

Pogba had looked destined to leave this summer after he expressed desires for a new challenge as Real Madrid and Juventus lurked, but Fernandes' signing is said to have given the Frenchman a new lease of life.

Solskjaer will have the opportunity to test out his new-look midfield for real when they play Tottenham in the first Premier League back next Friday.

Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes CAN play together, according to Michael Carrick, but Manchester United coach says it is 'unfair' to just focus on the pair with multiple talented midfielders

* Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes impressed as Man United beat Sheffield United
* The midfielders started together for the first time in the 3-0 Premier League win
* United coach Michael Carrick says he is confident the pair can combine in future
* Carrick feels competition in the squad is strong ahead of their trip to Norwich

Manchester United coach Michael Carrick says that Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes can continue to bring the best out of each other after their first start together in the Premier League.

The midfielders were named in the starting line-up for the first time on Wednesday as United swept past Sheffield United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has shone for United since signing from Sporting Lisbon for £68million in January, but Pogba's injury problems and the suspension of football due to the coronavirus had prevented them from playing together before the restart of the Premier League.

'It is understandable why a lot of the questions are "can they play together?" because they are two fantastic talents,' former United midfielder Carrick told ESPN.

Paul Pogba (left) came on as a substitute before Bruno Fernandes (right) levelled at Tottenham. The midfield pair started against Sheffield United as Anthony Martial (got all three goals. United coach Michael Carrick is excited about Pogba linking up with new boy Fernandes

'It is kind of unfair to single them out because the other boys have done a terrific job and will have plenty to say as well.

'Of course, the talk is about Bruno and Paul and I'm sure they can play together. That's why they are both here at the club and I'm sure they are looking forward to it.

'We've got so many other options with lads who have already proven what they bring to the team.'

Fernandes scored a penalty as United drew 1-1 at Spurs in their first match back before providing an eye-catching performance alongside the impressive Pogba in the comfortable win over the Blades.

Both players were involved in the flowing move that provided Anthony Martial with his first Premier League hat-trick, and the striker has now scored six times in seven matches since Fernandes's arrival.

'Paul and Bruno showed quality and it's exciting for us to be working with talent like this,' United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the win.

'Paul is still a bit away from his best form. That's natural on his first start since September and he's been working hard, so hopefully it won't be too long, but I thought he controlled the game.'

United travel to Norwich in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday evening.

'It's freed him up to play': Rio Ferdinand raves about effect Bruno Fernandes has had on Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba, claiming the French midfielder has been a 'totally different player since the restart'

* Bruno Fernandes has made a tremendous impact since arriving at Man United
* The Portuguese's influence has also seemingly improved Paul Pogba's attitude
* Rio Ferdinand says Pogba is playing like he was when he signed four years ago
* United are two points off Chelsea in the hunt for a Premier League top-four spot

Bruno Fernandes' arrival at Manchester United has 'shouldered the burden of expectation' on Paul Pogba, says their former defender Rio Ferdinand.

Portuguese midfielder Fernandes, signed from Sporting Lisbon for £66m in January, has hit the ground running and immediately become a fans' favourite with a string of good performances.

And since the restart, Pogba - who had only played twice since September due to injury - has flourished alongside Fernandes in midfield and Ferdinand did not underplay the immense impact the January arrival has had on his team-mate.

'[Paul] Pogba has been a totally different player since the restart,' Ferdinand told BT Sport.

'The energy levels in his game, it's the Pogba United paid £89m for four years ago. A big factor is undoubtedly the man he is playing with in the centre of midfield - Bruno Fernandes.

'Pogba will not want to be shown up out there and that's perhaps the motivation he needed. Solskjaer will be absolutely loving what he's seeing from those two.

'Fernandes is just doing what comes naturally to him and it's been a huge boost to Pogba's form - it's freed him up to play as well.

'There's probably less pressure on him now because he knows that some of the burden of expectation is being shouldered by Fernandes.'

Bruno Fernandes' arrival at Manchester United has 'freed up' team-mate Paul Pogba. Ex-United player Rio Ferdinand believes Fernandes has 'shouldered the burden of expectation'. Pogba has returned to the starting XI a different player since the Premier League restarted

Pogba was introduced from the bench in United's first game back against Tottenham after the restart, winning a penalty which was converted by Fernandes to salvage a point.

Since then, after a double against Brighton last week, Fernandes was on the scoresheet again at the weekend as United strolled past Bournemouth 5-2 on Saturday.

That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish - the Red Devils are currently fifth in the table, two points off Chelsea a spot ahead of them.
