Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
83 English players started opening Premier League weekend... the most since 2010-11 season (as even top six clubs named 22 homegrown players!)
* 83 English players started for Premier League clubs during opening weekend * That number is the highest since the 2010-2011 Premier League campaign * 22 of the 83 English starters played for the top six clubs in the division The highest number of English players started the opening weekend of the Premier League in nine years as a total number of 83 players played across the 20 clubs. That means that 37.73 per cent of the players who started for Premier League clubs this weekend were English. The last time a higher number of English players started on the opening weekend of the Premier League came in the 2010-11 season when 85 played. There was even a large contingency of homegrown players that featured for the top six clubs with a total number of 22 English players starting - the highest number since 2016-17 season. All the English starters for the top six clubs were under 30 years of age, with an average of 23 years and 351 days. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Calum Chambers, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson all started Arsenal's win over while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson played the full 90 in their opening-day victory over Norwich. Manchester United named the most English players from the off with a total of five in their comprehensive 4-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday. Manchester United had more English starters over the weekend than any of the top-six clubs Quote:
Mason Mount, Ross Barkley, Tammy Abraham all started the game against United for Chelsea as Frank Lampard got off to a nightmare start. The Premier League champions City named three Englishmen in their starting XI for their game against West Ham. Kyle Walker, John Stones and Raheem Sterling all started but it was the latter who had the most impact with the forward scoring a hat-trick in the 5-0 win. While Tottenham started Kyle Walker-Peters, Danny Rose, Harry Winks and Harry Kane for their victory against Aston Villa. There could have been more English players starting had Dele Alli been fit.
