Thierry Henry has announced his retirement after a 20-year playing career, which included two Barclays Premier League titles and 175 league goals during his time in north London.

Having moved to Arsenal from Juventus in the summer of 1999, to rejoin Arsene Wenger, for whom he played at his first club Moncao, Henry went on to score 174 BPL goals for the Gunners in an eight-year spell which included the "Invincibles" title triumph of 2003/04, when the team went unbeaten for the whole league campaign.

After a spell at Barcelona, Henry returned to Arsenal during a brief loan spell from New York Red Bulls in January and February of 2012, which included his 175th league goal for the club, a later winner away to Sunderland.

With 175 goals Henry is the joint-fourth top scorer in Barclays Premier League history, level with Frank Lampard, who reached the mark at the weekend for Manchester City.

• Thierry Henry has the best minutes-goal ratio of any player to have scored over 100 Barclays Premier League goals (122min per goal).

• The Frenchman holds the record for the most assists in a season, 20 in 2002/03. Given that he scored 24 goals in that campaign, Henry contributed 44 goals overall.

• Henry has scored against 34 of the 35 teams he has faced in the Barclays Premier League. The only team he faced and not scored against were Swansea City, against whom he played 24 minutes as a substitute during his brief comeback in the 2011/12 season.

• Henry holds the record for most goals at a single BPL ground (114 at Highbury).

• During the Arsenal "Invincibles" run of 49 games without defeat, Henry played the most minutes (4,312), scored the most goals (39) and made the most assists (19).

• He is the only player to score 20 BPL goals or more in five successive seasons.

• In top-flight history, only Jimmy Greaves (six) and Steve Bloomer (five) have finished top scorer more often than Henry (four). Greaves, Alan Shearer and Henry are the only three players to have won the top-scorer award three seasons in a row.

In addition to his numbers, Henry had the ability to score goals that were worth more than statistics.

A flick and volley with his back to goal against title rivals Manchester United, an audacious backheel against Charlton Athletic and many long-range strikes were among his club record haul for the Gunners.

"Whatever I feel at the time I do it, whatever is in front of me or whatever game it is," Henry told Premier League TV. "I can't even tell you why. It's what I feel like when I am on the ball and it depends on the situation around me.

"I just want to be remembered as a good football player, can defend, has great heart, scores goals, gives goals. For me it's important to be complete."

Penyerang Queens Park Rangers Charlie Austin tak mau kalah untuk memberikan pujian sekaligus penghormatan kepada Thierry Henry yang baru saja mengumumkan pensiun sebagai pemain sepakbola.

Henry, 37, memutuskan gantung sepatu setelah kontraknya bersama klub MLS New York Red Bulls berakhir dan yang bersangkutan memilih karier baru sebagai pandit di Sky Sports.

Dalam sebuah keterangan menanggapi pensiunnya pria Prancis tersebut, Austin tak ragu untuk menyampaikan pujiannya, dengan menyebut Henry sebagai legendanya sepakbola.

“Thierry Henry adalah legendanya sepakbola! Dia mencetak begitu banyak gol untuk Arsenal saat berkarier dan merupakan salah satu alasan mengapa Arsenal menjalani musim dengan rekor tidak terkalahkan,” demikian Austin seperti dikutip dari Sky Sports News.

“Selamat menikmati masa pensiunmu dan saya tak sabar melihat Anda tampil di Sky Sports sebagai pandit!”

Henry tak diragukan lagi merupakan legenda hidup sepakbola. Selama 20 tahun berkarier, setidaknya ia berhasil mengemas 360 gol di semua kompetisi di level klub dan menyumbang 51 gol dari 123 penampilan bersama timnas Prancis.

Tercatat, hampir semua gelar pernah ia rasakan; mulai dari Liga Primer, La Liga bahkan Piala Eropa dan Piala Dunia serta sejumlah penghargaan individu yang tentu menghiasi lemari pribadinya.

Henry memutuskan untuk pensiun dari dunia sepakbola profesional awal pekan ini di usianya yang menginjak 37 tahun, usai memenangkan hampir semua gelar di sepanjang karirnya yang menawan.

"Jarang anda melihat seorang stiker yang punya kecepatan dan keseimbangan yang setara, namun Henry punya itu. Ia bisa membingungkan bek lawan dengan kecepatannya. Ia seorang pesepakbola yang luar biasa," tulis Scholes di The Independent.
