Premier League to hold EMERGENCY MEETING on Friday after Mikel Arteta was diagnosed with coronavirus... just an hour after it was confirmed that ALL English football games would go ahead with fans this weekend

* On Thursday night, it was announced Mikel Arteta had contracted coronavirus
* There are doubts over Euro's taking place this summer amid coronavirus crisis
* The rest of Europe have either suspended or postponed sporting events
* In contrast, the Premier League and EFL will carry on as normal this weekend

The Premier League will hold an emergency meeting on Friday after it was revealed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had contracted coronavirus.

The shock news came on the day English football was told by the government to carry on as normal.

But Arsenal’s situation forced the Premier League to schedule an emergency conference call on Friday morning with all 20 clubs. The Gunners’ match at Brighton on Saturday has been postponed.

It was revealed on Thursday night that Mikel Arteta had contracted the coronavirus

The League will face pressure from clubs to call off the rest of the matches this weekend. There are concerns over the safety of their players and the integrity of the competition.

A Premier League statement said: 'In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures.

'The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.'

The meeting is expected to take place on Friday morning at 10.30am.

One proposal being discussed by the Premier League is to postpone games until the international break when they could potentially be rescheduled.

If Arsenal's players are to be self-isolated for the next two weeks from Friday, that also puts their FA Cup quarter-final with Sheffield United in jeopardy.

The news came just hours after English football was given the green light to carry on as normal by the government on Thursday night as much of the rest of the sporting world was shut down in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

On an unprecedented day of cancellations football league programmes in Spain, Portugal, Holland and the United States were suspended alongside postponements in rugby, tennis, golf, basketball and athletics, while England's Test series in Sri Lanka that is due to start next week came under threat and more doubts were raised over whether this summer's European Championship and Olympics will take place as planned.

UEFA will hold talks with the 55 national associations and representatives of Europe's leading clubs next Tuesday to discuss contingency planning for the European Championship, including taking the dramatic step of postponing the tournament for 12 months.

If that is agreed then this summer will be used to schedule any outstanding Champions League and Europa League fixtures, as several knockout matches have already been postponed, as well as giving time to complete any unfinished domestic leagues. La Liga and Serie A have both been suspended.

Amid an atmosphere of uncertainty several other radical proposals will also be discussed, including shortening the Euros by cutting the number of teams and scrapping the qualification play-offs due to take place this month, which will be strongly opposed by those involved including Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

UEFA are also considering a truncated Champions League and Europa League in an attempt to ensure both competitions are completed this season by reducing the remaining knockout rounds from two legs to one.

The Premier League and EFL will, as it stands, continue as normal in front of packed crowds this weekend in a stark contrast to the situation elsewhere in Europe, and the status quo will remain until the government alters its advice on mass gatherings, which may not be for several more weeks.

Boris Johnson raised the spectre of eventually banning sporting events or restricting crowds on Thursday, but emphasised scientific advice he has received that large crowds do not in themselves carry a huge additional risk.

'We are considering banning major public events like sporting fixtures,' he said. 'The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread, but it does place a burden on other public services.'

Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave English football the green light to carry on as normal

English clubs' European campaigns have been affected however, with Manchester City's last 16 Champions League knockout tie against Real Madrid next week postponed as the Spanish club are in quarantine.

That is the second postponement City have experienced in as many days after their Premier League game with Arsenal was called off in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and the club are understood to be unhappy with the guidance they have received from the league headquarters.

Rugby union in England followed football's lead, with the Premiership set to continue after the Pro14 fixtures in Scotland, Wales and Ireland were suspended indefinitely.

Premier League clubs ban stars from taking commercial travel despite allowing them time off as coronavirus outbreak halts football

* Premier League clubs are banning their stars from taking commercial travel
* Multiple clubs have given players an extended break after Friday’s suspension
* West Ham have instructed their players to keep a log of where they travel

Premier League clubs are banning their stars from taking commercial travel despite allowing them time off following the decision to suspend competition.

While a number of teams, including Manchester United, will continue to train as normal, a host of clubs have given their players an extended break after Friday’s suspension in domestic and European football.

But a number of clubs have placed major travel restrictions on squads that include taking any commercial travel whilst they rest to minimise the threat of catching the Coronavirus.

As well as the threat posed by public travel, club medical departments are particularly mindful of their players, who are multi-million pound assets, walking through airports and train stations given the obvious risks involved.

Sportsmail revealed last week how West Ham have instructed players to keep a log of where they go away from the training ground - a tactic a host of clubs have introduced in recent days.

And public places, such as train stations and airports, are viewed as high risk areas by clubs who are desperate to protect their players’ health.

Premier League risk breaching £3billion television contract for this season if competition is not finished by the end of July

* Premier League are committed to delivering a completed programme by July 31
* The new contract for the 2020/21 season is set to kick in on August 1
* All 20 clubs have nine or 10 matches of their 38-game programme remaining, which could mean that as much as £750million of income is lost
* It will lend urgency to the league's attempts to agree a timetable for a restart

The Premier League risk breaching their £3billion television contract for this season if the competition is not completed by the end of July.

Sportsmail has learned that, under the terms of contracts signed with Sky Sports, BT Sport and overseas broadcasters, the Premier League are committed to delivering a completed fixture programme by July 31, with the contract for the next season kicking in on August 1.

With all 20 clubs having nine or 10 matches of their 38-game programme remaining, as much as £750million of income could be lost, which will lend urgency to the Premier League’s attempts to agree a timetable for restarting the season at a meeting scheduled for Thursday.

The broadcasters have yet to demand any rebates as the top flight has only been suspended until April 4 but, with many clubs harbouring doubts as to whether the season will be completed, television executives are reserving the right to do so.

The Premier League’s priority is to get the season completed at some point to protect its integrity and to ensure broadcast rights fees are paid, despite dissent from some clubs who would prefer the campaign to be scrapped.

More should become clearer on Tuesday following a UEFA meeting, at which this summer’s European Championship is expected to be put back to 2021.

Premier League clubs fear losing summer millions as they are forced to put pre-season tours on hold due to coronavirus pandemic

* The coronavirus outbreak is having an extremely detrimental effect on sport
* The Premier League and EFL have suspended their seasons until April 3 and 4
* A series of top clubs had been due to announce their plans for the summer
* Those plans have been shelved with fears growing such trips may be off-limits

Premier League clubs have been forced to put pre-season tours on hold, with some set to miss out on millions.

Sportsmail understands a series of top-flight clubs, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United, were due to announce in the next few weeks where they would be heading for summer trips, in a bid to cash in on the Premier League's global appeal.

But the coronavirus pandemic has seen plans shelved with fears growing that such trips may now be off-limits.

Manchester United were due to announce their summer plans in the next few weeks. There is a great deal of uncertainty over when and if the Premier League season will finish

Last month, Sportsmail reported that clubs would trust their in-house medical departments to rule on whether summer tours to China could go ahead. However, the escalation of the outbreak globally has led to those plans being paused.

The logistical issues of travelling to countries which will be at different stages of the pandemic — coupled with the need for players to have a break after what is set to be at best an extended season — presents an extra issue which could make overseas trips impossible.

Travel departments at a number of clubs, already stressed by the current uncertainty, have been asked to draw up alternative plans.

There is a slim chance that the situation may work in clubs' favour when football restarts. With Uefa set to announce on Tuesday that Euro 2020 will be delayed by 12 months, some are hoping they will be able to take a full squad of stars on tour, which they are unable to do when their players are involved in summer tournaments.

However, it seems more likely that low key pre-season work with fixtures in Britain and Ireland will become the new norm.

Premier League under fire after their television channel cancels freelance shifts with cash-strapped workers left in limbo over lack of live action

* The Premier League has come under fire for cancelling freelance shifts
* The top-flight's TV arm has contacted freelancers to say they are not needed
* It comes amid an uncertain time for freelancers with a lack of sport action

The Premier League has come under fire for cancelling freelance shifts and not paying cash-strapped workers.

Premier League Productions, the top-flight's television arm, has contacted camera operators, production crews and other services to tell them that certain dates they already had in their diaries have been cancelled.

Sportsmail has seen a number of emails sent by the organisation to would-be workers telling them that their services are no longer needed on certain dates with the competition on lockdown.

However, some of the freelancers, facing an incredibly bleak few months, believe that they are being unfairly punished by an organisation that - at the last count - had more than £1.5billion in the bank.

One of those affected, who did not wish to be named, explained: 'This is a really worrying time for all of us. We had banked on the cash from the PLP shifts and, to be honest, even though the filming events were cancelled we thought that we would get paid anyway.

'We think the Premier League has already received the money for the content, so why are they not paying us? If they are trying to save a few quid at our expense it stinks.'

The Premier League has come under fire for cancelling shifts ahead of a pause in coverage. Premier League Productions told freelancers their pre-arranged shifts had been cancelled. It comes amid an uncertain time with sporting action stopped for the foreseeable future

The Premier League operates PLP along with global sports and talent management giants IMG. PLP produces and distributes all of the Premier League's international programming, including the broadcast of every match. Under normal circumstances, PLP also produces seven magazine shows each week and the flagship Matchday Live programme, which provides wraparound coverage of all matches.

An IMG spokesman said: 'In light of the temporary halting of live studio programming, PLP has reduced some of its freelance staff. Once we know what is happening with the Premier League we will review our freelance requirements.'

Like many other industries, these are worrying times for freelancers. On Tuesday, the broadcast union urged the government to help, with those who work in sport severely affected by the lack of live events to film and produce.

The spiralling cost of Premier League wages sees the Big Six spend £1.7BILLION on player salaries - including £352m at Manchester United - as Deloitte warn of huge coronavirus losses

* Player wages as percentage of revenue has soared at top Premier League clubs over the last two years
* Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all saw large increases in their already huge wage bills
* Eight top-flight clubs are at or above UEFA's warning threshold for meeting Financial Fair Play rules
* It comes as Deloitte warns of a £1billion crash in Premier League revenues as result of coronavirus pandemic
* Loss of matchday revenues will only see wages take up an even greater chunk of clubs' incomes

Player wage bills at the Premier League's elite clubs have spiralled over the past two years amid warnings of a £1billion loss in revenue because of Covid-19.

A study by Deloitte found wages at Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea as a percentage of club revenue rose sharply last season as part of a £1.7billion outlay on wages by the 'big six'.

The figures also indicate that eight Premier League clubs recorded wage to revenue ratios of 70 per cent or more - the warning threshold used by UEFA in its Financial Fair Play rules.

Manchester United, who have stars such as Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, were among the Premier League clubs who saw an increase in their player wage bill as a percentage of revenue last season

The published figures for the 2018-19 season will only worsen now the current campaign has been interrupted by the pandemic, with matches set to be played behind closed doors for some time.

Deloitte say top-flight clubs will face a permanent loss of £500million because of rebates to broadcasters and a loss of matchday revenue without fans.

And they warn a further £500m missing from 2019-20 balance sheets will only be recouped if next season's competition is able to be played in full.

Despite players and staff at many Premier League clubs taking temporary wage cuts or deferrals when the season was suspended there is still set to be a major impact.

Chelsea's wages-to-revenue ratio jumped from 55 per cent in the 2017-18 season to 70 per cent last season.

While the club's wage bill increased from £246m to £314m, revenues went up only marginally from £448m to £452m.

The percentage of revenue that went on wages at Manchester United increased from 50 per cent to 56 per cent, while at Manchester City it went up from 52 to 59 per cent.

At United, the wage bill rose from £296m in 2017-18 to £352m last season as revenues increased from £590m to £627m.

Over at City, there was a similarly sharp rise in player wages from £260m to £315m as revenues rose from £503m to £538m.

Big spending Manchester City saw their wage bill increase from £260m to £315m over the last two seasons. Premier League clubs, including league leaders Liverpool, are set for a loss of £1billion in revenue in their 2019-20 accounts. Deloitte says top-flight sides will face a permanent loss of £500million because of the suspension due to coronavirus

Liverpool's percentage remained steady at 58 per cent, while Tottenham's was the lowest in the division last season at 39 per cent.

While the league average rose a little from 59 per cent to 61 per cent over the two seasons, wages accounted for a remarkable 85 per cent of revenue coming in at Everton and Bournemouth. Leicester weren't far behind on 83 per cent.

This is the first time since the 2015-16 season that more than one Premier League club has had a wages-to-revenue ratio above 80 per cent.

But this number is likely to increase with clubs forecast to earn just half of normal matchday revenue in 2020-21, leading to potential losses of £350m if supporters can't return next season.

The other clubs which recorded a wages-to-revenue ratio at or above the 70 per cent warning threshold were West Ham, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Brighton.

The catastrophic effects of Covid-19 come just as Premier League combined revenues had topped £5bn for the first time.

Premier League clubs to ask for transfer window to open immediately at end of season... but there are concerns players could be unsettled for closing matches

* Premier League clubs are to ask for the transfer window to open from July 27
* Dates to be discussed on Thursday, and window could close in early October
* FA Cup final is set for August 1, with European fixtures to follow thereafter

Premier League clubs will ask for the transfer window to open immediately after the end of this season. But that is raising concerns among teams that will still be in action that their players will be unsettled at a crucial time.

At Thursday's shareholders meeting, top-flight clubs will discuss the issue, with a window date of July 27 to October 5 or 6 popular among teams. UEFA have recommended all European leagues shut their transfer windows on October 5.

The Premier League campaign is due to finish on the weekend of July 25-26. However, there are growing concerns that players still involved in competition beyond that date — particularly the Championship play-offs — could be left unsettled if the window is open.

Premier League clubs are set to ask for the transfer window to be open from July 27 - Sportsmail reported on Monday that Bournemouth's Nathan Ake (R) could be put up for sale

The play-offs are due to start on July 26 before the final at Wembley on August 4. Likewise, the FA Cup final is scheduled for August 1 while Manchester City, Manchester United and Wolves will be involved in European competition well into August.

And the scenario of players being targeting for swoops by rivals ahead of crucial matches - and any psychological impact that could have - is an issue clubs are well aware of.

Indeed, it is understood the EFL are currently in consultation with their clubs about plans for the forthcoming transfer window.

Manchester City will be involved in European competition well into August after league ends. There are no regulations that state Premier League and EFL windows have to run concurrently

There are no regulations that state the Premier League and EFL windows have to run concurrently.

The previous League One and League Two summer windows ran almost a month longer than the Premier League and Championship's which close on August 8. There is an acknowledgement, though, that it is significantly more beneficial for the EFL and Premier League windows to run together.

While the coronavirus financial crisis is likely to result in less transfer business this summer, clubs are still manoeuvring themselves into position to strike if the right deals come along.

There is a concern among some clubs and agents that foreign footballers may show a reluctance to sign for English clubs given the UK's relatively high Covid-related death rate. That could pose a problem for clubs looking to strengthen their squads, with the foreign market widely viewed as providing better value for money.

Indeed, sources claim France's Ligue 1 will become a particular focus for English clubs this summer as they seek to take advantage of the financial worries of teams outside the traditional big four - Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Monaco and Lyon.

The curtailment of the French season has left a number of clubs facing a precarious financial future, with English clubs keen to take advantage.
