Ryan revels in home rule



For all his trophies and medals, Ryan Giggs has rarely been able to savour his success in front of a packed Old Trafford. Little surprise, then, that English football's most decorated player was delighted to secure his 11th Premier League title in M16.

While the Reds were jittery and nowhere near their best against Arsenal, the title-tipping point was procured to see off the lingering challenge of second-placed Liverpool - much to Giggs' elation.

"It feels brilliant," Ryan told MUTV. "We've been talking about doing it in front of our own fans, and that's what makes it so special. Not relying on someone else losing or doing it away from Old Trafford, it was brilliant to do it today.

"It was agony for the second half, if I'm honest, and it probably was for the fans as well. The one team you don't want to play against is Arsenal, because they keep the ball so much and they're a top side, and they came to spoil the party. We defended brilliantly as we have done all season and managed to get there."

Giggs has never been one to dwell on his multiple successes, and he is already contemplating the possibility of more silverware next season.

"It's been a special time at the club since the manager took over and we've managed to win so much. Hopefully we can carry that on. I don't think anyone's ever done it (won the league title) four times on the trot before so there's another record that hopefully we can break."

Ryan Giggs awarded the freedom of Salford

Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has another award for his trophy cabinet - he's been awarded the freedom of the city of Salford.

Giggs, 36, was presented the award at The Lowry at a glittering ceremony attended by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson and United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

The United winger, who has been living in the borough since he moved from his native Wales as a six-year-old boy, said the award was 'amongst the greatest honours he had ever achieved'.

He said: “Salford is my home and I am really pleased to get this honour.

“When I first moved here, there wasn't even a cinema, but everything is on the up now.

“We've got The Lowry, and MediaCity coming through. It's an exciting time to live in Salford.

“To be given the freedom of Salford, my adopted city, has to rank amongst the greatest honours I have ever received.

“I feel hugely proud and privileged to be recognised in this way and would like to place on record my gratitude to the city fathers for bestowing on me this wonderful tribute.”

Giggs, a Welsh international, moved to Swinton with his family in 1980 and played for local club Deans.

He was offered a professional contract at Old Trafford in 1990, making his league debut against Everton in 1991.

During his career with United, he has become the most decorated player in English football history. He was the first player to collect 11 English title medals and the first to score in 11 successive seasons in the Uefa Champions League.

Giggs was nominated for the award by Councillor John Warmisham, Salford City Council's lead member for children's services. He is the 22nd person to be given the freedom of Salford.

Cllr Warmisham, a lifelong Red, said: “It's with great pleasure that I move Ryan Giggs to be awarded the honour of the freedom of the city of Salford.

“Many people only know Ryan Giggs the footballer, but there is so much more to the man than that.

“He's a living legend for United supporters. He's made Salford his adopted home and he's been an incredible ambassador for the city, both on and off the field.”

As part of the ceremony he was given a gold medal and certificate.

The award is only ceremonial to mark his achievements and does the rights that the traditional freedom of the city used to give.
