Re: Pele & Cantona Visit Singapore ?

Cantona, Pele reveal Cosmos direction
Football legends Eric Cantona and Pele have arrived in Singapore to officially kick off the 2011 New York Cosmo Asia Tour. By Kelvin Tan It may be a little known fact, but the last time the Cosmo's were in town was the 1970's. Since the American club's return to the football scene seven months ago, there has been much hype about what plans Honorary President Pele and Director of Football Cantona have for the club. ESPNSTAR.com was at the US-Asia Pacific Regional Summit in Singapore on Thursday to hear the duo share their vision and plans for the club, and explain why they signed up with the Cosmos. Manchester United legend Cantona admitted that he had no intention to return to the game in any form after his retirement, but was tempted by the American club's global vision. Speaking to the press, he said: "I didn't want to come back to football after leaving Manchester United". "But Cosmos is a different story. This is a big project." The Frenchman was also adamant that the future of the club lay in how they went about developing young talent. "We have a vision how we want our kids to play" ,Cantona added. "If we start them at a young age, they'll know exactly how we want them to play the game." He also gave an insight towards the current setup at the club's academies, and the wealth of talent that is currently developing there. "I have seen some wonderful players from 17-18 years of age (at our academy), and our staff have started to work on them, and they are doing a good job", he said. But it is not just simply football that the club seeks to educate their youngsters about, according to Pele. The Brazilian legend said: "A lot of kids have skill. My father used to tell me- discipline. You play very good because God gave you the gift". "But if you prepare and train yourself, no one can stop you, and that is our message. The 70-year-old added: "We have to see beyond just professional players". "We can bring discipline to kids, to help draw kids away from drugs and bad things." Pele himself grew up in poverty in Bauru, Sao Paolo, and believes that the "aspirational" aspect of football will be what will help the Cosmos find their new generation of players in the United States. "Most great talents are found in the working class", he said, "but soccer is not yet aspirational in the United States". "Through our academy we hope to help find hidden talents, and Eric is doing trials for our academy." The club currently have two academies: Cosmos Academy East and Cosmos Academy West, in New York and Los Angeles respectively, and are favorites to debut as the 20th Major League Soccer franchise in 2013.
Source : http://www.detiksport.com |
