MU WOMEN 9 LONDON BEES 0

Manchester United Women began 2019 in devastating fashion by convincingly beating London Bees 9-0 at Leigh Sports Village in the FA Women’s Championship.

The ruthless Reds ran riot with first-half goals from Charlie Devlin, Ella Toone, Lizzie Arnot and Mollie Green putting the hosts in cruise control before the break. Devlin and Toone added to their’s and United’s goal tally in the second half with Lauren James also grabbing a brace from the bench and Katie Zelem adding a ninth goal from the penalty spot.

With United set for the first of three games in a busy week, Casey Stoney made three changes to her starting line-up, bringing in Toone, Arnot and Devlin for James, Amy Turner and Leah Galton.

The Reds, returning to action after a three-week festive break, were on the front foot from the off and took the lead inside two minutes. Green’s effort from close range hit the post, but Devlin was on hand to follow in on the rebound and net her second goal of the campaign to get Stoney’s side off to the best possible start to the year and the game.

The 20-year-old midfielder was hungry for more and after twenty minutes, Devlin very nearly doubled United’s lead. After twisting and turning her way past several defenders into the box, her effort was denied by the woodwork as the Reds continued to pepper shots at the London Bees’ goal.

Eventually, Toone did indeed double United’s lead through a fantastic team goal that left Stoney smiling on the touchline. Zelem started the move off with a short free-kick to Green who spread the ball out wide to Devlin who had made a run into the box. The midfielder calmly squared the ball across to Toone who had an empty net to finish into.

The Reds were given a tap on the shoulder by the visitors in the first half. Destiny Toussant - who had proven to be a threat in the reverse fixture before being subbed off through injury - went on a mazy run into United’s box, but her shot from an acute angle did nothing more than brush the side netting.

Stoney's side were still hungry for more goals and were able to put the game to bed before the break with two strikes inside two minutes. Firstly, Arnot slotted home at the far post from a brilliant cross by Kirsty Hanson who had been a threat on the wing all afternoon. Moments later, United pounced on a defensive error from the Bees and Green was on hand to expertly slot home her tenth league goal of the season.

The Reds lost none of the intensity after the break and a fifth goal followed just before the hour mark. Devlin was played through brilliantly and was one-on-one with the keeper. Quantrill did get a touch to the 20-year-old’s shot, but could not prevent the ball from trickling over the line to further assert United’s dominance in the game.

But the hosts weren’t finished there, making it 6-0 after James produced a brilliant through ball to Hanson who then delivered a perfect low cross into the box for Toone who could not miss. James then got in on the act as she charged into the box and confidently lashed home an effort minutes later.

The same youngster then scored her second goal, and United's eighth, after being played through by Toone and holding off a defender to score. The ninth came from the penalty spot with 12 minutes to go. United won a spot-kick after Devlin was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area. Even with Devlin, Toone and James on a hat-trick, it was Zelem that was given the responsibility to take the penalty and she made no mistake as she passed the ball into the net to complete the rout.

With a Continental Tyres Cup game against West Ham United to come in midweek and an away trip to Charlton next weekend in the league, the Reds could not have asked for a better possible start to what will no doubt be a busy period for Stoney’s side.

MANCHESTER UNITED WOMEN 2 WEST HAM WOMEN 0

Manchester United Women are through to the semi-finals of the Continental Tyres League Cup semi-finals after knocking out Super League side West Ham Women on Wednesday night.

An own goal by the Hammers' Katie Longhurst and Jess Sigsworth's second-half strike ensured the Reds ran out 2-0 winners.

This was the Reds' second game back after a three-week festive break and Sunday's 9-0 league win against London Bees was followed up with an equally impressive performance against West Ham.

The first effort came after just a few minutes from full-back Kirsty Smith, but her right-footed shot from outside the area was comfortably saved by West Ham goalkeeper Becky Spencer.

The hosts dominated the early proceedings and nearly took the lead after just nine minutes when Alex Greenwood’s deep cross, aimed for Lauren James, took a nick off a Hammers defender and flashed just inches wide of the far post. Greenwood connected with the resulting corner and forced a smart save from Spencer.

On 17 minutes, the Reds' dominance paid its first dividend. After some patient build-up play, James was released down the left flank and floated a dangerous cross into the box, which caused havoc for the Hammers' backline and ultimately caused Longhurst to prod the ball into her own net from inside the six-yard box, putting the home side 1-0 up.

The Reds continued to overrun West Ham and Mollie Green would have been clean through on goal not long after her team took the lead, had she not been ruled fractionally offside.

Greewood then tested Spencer with a smart free-kick from just outside the box, after Sigsworth was wrestled to the ground by Brooke Hendrix.

West Ham were beginning to grow into the game and Siobhan Chamberlain was called into her first real save of the half on 32 minutes, when Claire Rafferty fired at the home goal. However, her left-footed strike was well held by United’s no.1.

Chamberlain was called into action again five minutes later. This time, Jane Ross found a few yards of space in the United box and from point-blank range unleashed a fierce shot, that somehow the Reds keeper got a hand to and pushed wide for a corner.

Next it was the hosts' turn to attack and a through ball found Green one on one with Spencer, yet the West Ham keeper managed to pull off a superb save to deny the Reds midfielder.

The hosts ended a strong half by nearly finding a second goal. Katie Zelem’s excellent free-kick was met in the box by defender Millie Turner, who headed just over the bar.

At the interval Kirsty Hanson replaced Lizzie Arnot as the Reds pushed to double the lead.

However, it was West Ham who looked the brightest after the restart and they nearly got on level terms within five minutes after an audacious shot from Longhurst struck Chamberlain’s left-hand post. Alisha Lehmann failed to covert from the rebound as the hosts breathed a sign of relief.

Yet soon after there were scenes of jubilation on the home bench as the advantage was extended to 2-0. A period of superb pressing from the Reds saw Sigsworth fasten on to a loose pass from the West Ham defence and she unleashed a powerful effort which Spencer had no chance of saving.

The hosts were bossing proceedings again. James nearly found the top corner from 30 yards and then a quick counter attack found her shot blocked by Hendrix, before Greenwood’s curling effort was palmed wide by the Hammers' keeper.

Chamberlain was a mere spectator as the Reds launched attack after attack and Zelem nearly added a third goal on 72 minutes when she prodded just wide from a corner.

James was running riot at Leigh Sport Village and she cut inside on her left foot inside the box only to see her shot saved. Green also forced Spencer into action on a busy night for the Hammers' no.1.

The Reds made a late change and introduced Ella Toone for James with ten minutes left.

Brianna Visalli had a late speculative effort which was saved comfortably by Chamberlain, but it proved to be the game’s last chance of note as Stoney's side went safely through.

MATCH DETAILS

United:
Chamberlain; Harris, A.Turner, M.Turner, Smith; Zelem, Greenwood (c) Green; Sigsworth, James (Toone 79), Arnot (Hanson 45).

Substitutes not used: Ramsey, Palmer, Hartley, Devlin, Roberts.

Goals: Longhurst own goal 17, Sigsworth 53.

NEXT MATCH

United Women return to league action next with a trip to face title rivals Charlton Athletic at the Oakwood, on Sunday 13 January (kick-off 14:00 GMT). An away win for the Reds could open up a four-point gap at the top of the table.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 0 UNITED WOMEN 2

A Lauren James brace and a brilliant penalty save by Siobhan Chamberlain gave Manchester United Women an excellent 2-0 win away against top-flight side Brighton & Hove Albion in the SSE Women’s FA Cup.

James, a half-time substitute, didn’t take long to make her presence felt, giving United the lead on 51 minutes. Jess Sigsworth did brilliantly on the right, driving into the area and delaying her pass just long enough for James to come onto and sweep home a first-time shot.

The teams went in level at the break after a cagey opening 45 minutes, though; Ella Toone, who looked dangerous every time she got the ball, had the only shot on target. Our no.7 did well to connect with Kirsty’s Hanson’s cross from the left, directing her effort towards goal on the stretch, but Brighton’s Fliss Gibbons was in the right place at the right time to head away.

The game opened up in the second half, with James’ goal coming just six minutes in and chances for both sides throughout. United looked the most likely to score again and extend the lead; Alex Greenwood, Toone and Sigsworth all had opportunities.

Brighton had a golden chance to equalise with 12 minutes remaining, though. Amy Turner’s challenge on Kayleigh Green in the area was adjudged to be a foul by referee Aji Ajibola, who pointed to the spot. Danni Buet stepped up for the home side but Chamberlain - called into action just once before this - made an excellent save from the Brighton captain’s firmly struck penalty, diving to her right and pushing it to safety.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser but United stood firm and made sure of the result when James scored her second goal in added time. The 17-year-old used her strength to hold off Brighton defenders, turned well and strode into the area before unleashing a low and hard strike past the Seagulls' keeper Sophie Harris.

The reward for this excellent result - another victory for Casey Stoney’s side against top-tier opposition - is a place in the SSE Women's FA Cup fifth-round draw, which will be broadcast live on the BBC News channel during Sportsday from 18:30 GMT on Monday, 4 February.
