Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he wants to leave this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Atletico Madrid correspondent Antonio Ruiz, who reports on Diego Simeone's side on a regular basis, revealed on Tuesday afternoon that Griezmann had notified the club's top brass of his decision.

News of his decision will delight Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Atletico Madrid correspondent Antonio Ruiz has revealed Griezmann wants to leave.

Mourinho, who is currently taking a break from football, has instructed Woodward of the players he wants at United by the time the new season is under way.

And Frenchman Griezmann is at the top of the Portuguese tactician's shopping list with the former Real Madrid boss desperate to add a potent finisher to his ranks.

Griezmann was expected to prolong his stay at Atletico in order to play in the famous white and red strip at their new stadium however, it seems like he has decided to push for a move.

No matter how much he pushes, however, his club are likely to resist unless Manchester United pay his full buy-out clause. And if Atletico Madrid are told by FIFA they cannot register new players this summer then it will further complicate his switch to Old Trafford.

Atletico expect to learn on Thursday if their two-year ban on transfers has been lifted. They have already served the first year and will be free to strengthen if their ban is halved on appeal as Real Madrid’s ban has been.
Coach Diego Simeone will accept Griezmann’s departure if the club can bring in new signings to compensate.

Manchester City’s Nolito, Malaga’s former Barcelona forward Sandro Ramirez who is also wanted by Everton and Sevilla attacker Vitolo are all poised to make a move to Madrid’s second club if the are allowed to register signings.

Simeone will also insist on a big signing to fill Griezmann’s boots and the club are likely to push for Chelsea’s Diego Costa if they lose their leading scorer.

Such big spending will see them demand every penny of Griezmann’s 100million euros buy-out clause, especially as they could owe the Frenchman’s former club Real Sociedad as much as 20 per cent of any fee they receive for him.

Atletico have continued to brief that Griezmann wants to stay and his representatives were in discussions with Atletico about renewing his contract when hints that he might want to leave began to appear last week.

The 26-year-old, who joined Atletico in 2014 from Real Sociedad, scored 16 La Liga goals for Simeone's men this season.

Griezmann has failed to win the title at Atletico but has won the Spanish Super Cup and finished as runner-up in the Champions League.

Manchester United will have to fork out north of £80million if they are to land their man despite his decision.

He will link up with close friend Paul Pogba if he is to move to the Red Devils this summer.

Pogba hinted Griezmann could join United by replicating the forward's celebration after winning the Europa League.

The world's most expensive player captioned the video 'is that you?' and Griezmann, who said a move to United is six out of 10 likely to happen, liked Pogba's post.

Antoine Griezmann has all-but confirmed he is staying at Atletico Madrid this summer, quashing rumours of an £86million move to Manchester United.

The French striker has been consistently linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, but Atletico's ban on signing players has seemingly put an end to any rumours.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday evening, Griezmann shared a picture of himself in an Atletico shirt, alongside the caption: 'Now more than ever #Atleti #AllTogether '

As Sportsmail reported earlier in the day, United had already cooled their interest in the forward, with attention turning to a new No 9 instead.

United are admirers of Griezmann but the France international is seen more as a No 10 who can play off the main forward and Jose Mourinho wants to focus recruitment on bringing in a more orthodox centre forward.

Antoine Griezmann has been given a massive pay-hike by Atletico Madrid as part of a new contract that ties him to the club until 2022.

But the Frenchman has resisted the club’s attempt to raise his buy-out clause and will cost Manchester United the same €100m (£88m) fee he would have cost them this summer if they come back in for him next year.

The 26-year-old Frenchman moves into the big pay league with a salary estimated to be worth €14million net a season, at £12.3million that means he will pick up around £235,000 a week net.

That is short of the £300,000 United were understood to be prepared to pay him. But the deal makes him Atletico Madrid’s top earner and leaves him trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid have been able to make the huge financial commitment because their spending in the transfer market this summer has been massively curtailed by the Fifa ban on registering new players until 2018.

They are still keen on a cut-price Diego Costa but a block was put on most of their summer activity when the Court of Arbitration in Sport upheld the game’s governing body’s ban on them signing players.

Antoine Griezmann apologised for any misunderstanding his comments about his future may have caused in recent months after extending his Atletico Madrid contract until 2022.

Griezmann signed a one-year extension with Atletico on Tuesday to bring a definitive end to one of the year's longest-running transfer sagas.

The France international had looked on course to join Manchester United for a fee reportedly in the region of €100million (£88m) - the release clause in his Atletico contract - with Griezmann at one point saying there was a 'six out of 10' chance of him moving to Old Trafford this summer.

However, in what appeared to be a series of mixed messages from Griezmann while transfer speculation rumbled on, the former Real Sociedad forward also seemed to suggest he saw his future at Atletico as well.

In the end, the likelihood of any summer move to United began to disappear at the start of this month when the Europa League winners revealed their interest in the 26-year-old had cooled.

That came on the same day that Atletico lost their appeal against a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, meaning they would not be able to register any new players until next January.

Speaking after signing his new contract, Griezmann said on his club's website: 'The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements.

'Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there wasn't any, but since I came (to Atletico) I have given my all for my club, my team-mates and my coaching staff, and I'm very happy to live one more season with all of you.

'I will thank them all (the fans) by giving my best on the pitch, as always.'

Griezmann has been a huge success since joining Atletico from Sociedad in 2014 and has finished as the Rojiblancos' leading scorer in each of his three seasons at the Vicente Calderon.

The forward, who has netted 83 goals in 160 matches for them, now intends to take a break before returning to training with his team-mates ahead of next season, which will be the first for Atletico at their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

He said: 'Now, I will be resting for a few days to recover and return with my team-mates and the coaching staff to prepare for the season in Los Angeles de San Rafael, like every year.'

It remains to be seen if United will be back in for Griezmann next year, but Atletico are delighted their talisman has committed himself to the club for the coming campaign.

Sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero said: 'It's great news because he is one of the best players in the world and all of us Atleticos should congratulate ourselves for him staying with us.

'Antoine is a different player, capable of changing a match, with spectacular qualities, a very complete player.'
