FIFA extends sanctions on players, official in Australia

Four English players and one Australian official in the Australian second division have been banned from soccer worldwide for over two years by FIFA. The world governing body announced on Wednesday that it had decided to honor Football Federation Australia’s ban until at least Dec. 31, 2015.

Pending criminal trial, FFA passed down its ruling a week earlier. FIFA’s confirmation of extension of the ban came on its website.

All four players — Joe Woolley, Reiss Noel, Nick McKoy and David Obaze — joined the Melbourne Stars in the Victorian Premier League from non-league clubs in England. (Their coach, Zaya Younan, is the other person charged with match-fixing by FFA). Their charges caused a stir in their home country, where officials have been calling for investigations into match-fixing at the non-league level.

“When I saw the names involved I was shocked,” Isthmian League Premier Division club Billericay Town chairman Steve Kent told the BBC. “The names I was reading I was so familiar with. Last season, they were all playing at our level. We played against them. That’s what shocked me the most.”

Woolley, Noel and McKoy played for AFC Hornchurch, which was in Conference South in 2012. Both Hornchurch and Billericay were relegated at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Schwarzer calls it quits as veteran Aussie retires from international football

Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has retired from international football.

The Chelsea goalkeeper told Football Federation Australia of his decision just hours before new coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed his first Socceroos squad.

The 41-year-old was overlooked for Australia's recent friendlies against France and Canada, given his continued lack of game time for Chelsea, where he is the back-up to Petr Cech.

Calling it a day: Mark Schwarzer has decided to retire after 109 caps for the Socceroos

Legend: Schwarzer is Australia's most-capped player after illustrious 20-year international career

It appears emerging 25-year-old Mitch Langerak is now the favourite to succeed Schwarzer as Australia's first-choice in goal.

Schwarzer is Australia's most-capped player with 109 appearances for the Socceroos since his debut in 1993.

His departure is the first major change to the Socceroos team since Holger Osieck's sacking last month, and there will likely be more to come.

Several other high-profile names are missing from Postecoglou's squad for the November 19 friendly against Costa Rica, which is 22 strong following Schwarzer's decision not to accept a call-up.

Luke Wilshere, David Carney and Sasa Ognenovski are out, along with the likes of Jackson Irvine, Nikita Rukavytsya and Brett Holman.

Lucas Neill, 35, is included, but expected to be demoted from the captaincy for the match.

Postecoglou said he intends to offer the players who helped the Socceroos book a ticket to the World Cup next year a chance to prove they still deserve a place in the national team set-up.

'The first task is to have a good look at the bulk of the players who played a significant part in qualifying Australia for the 2014 World Cup and also giving opportunities to players I think have the ability to improve the team,' he said.

'I want to give every Australian player the best opportunity to stake a claim for Brazil and beyond.'

FFA approves Melbourne Heart licence acquisition

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today announced that the acquisition of the Melbourne Heart licence in the Hyundai A-League by English Premier League club Manchester City and its Australian partners has been approved.

Under the terms of the transaction, the new owners will assume responsibility for all existing obligations of Melbourne Heart.

FFA CEO David Gallop said the acquisition of the Melbourne Heart licence was a huge vote of confidence in the future of the Hyundai A-League.

“Football has moved into the mainstream of Australian sport and is ideally placed to benefit from the boom in football across Asia,” said Gallop.

“Manchester City and their Australian partners have made a strategic investment and I welcome them to our growing competition. It’s another sign that the world is taking notice of Australian football.

“Manchester City and their partners will bring a high level of expertise in football and sports business matters and that can only strengthen the Melbourne Heart and the Hyundai A-League as a whole.”

The Australian partners are also part of the ownership group of National Rugby League (NRL) club the Melbourne Storm, but the Heart and the Storm will remain separate entities.

“The arrangements we have approved will see Manchester City have an 80% share,” said Gallop.

“There may be some common directors between the Heart and the Storm, but we are comfortable with the plan that the Heart will be largely a separately operated business, similar to the arrangements in Newcastle with the Jets and the Knights.”

Gallop has commended Manchester City and its Australian partners for their professional manner in completing the acquisition.

“The initial discussions began with our chairman Frank Lowy over a year ago in New York and we’ve been impressed with the clear strategic approach to the acquisition,” said Gallop.

“The new owners are taking a long-term view of this investment, which fits perfectly with our strategic plans for the A-League and the growth trajectory of Australian football.”

Eks Bek Liverpool Gabung Klub Level Bawah Australia
By Gangga Basudewa

Australia Berencana Ikut Piala AFF 2020
Doni Wahyudi - detikSport
