Why this Barcelona star is the perfect signing for Man United and Van Gaal



Manchester United’s rebirth under Louis van Gaal continued in the perfect fashion on Monday evening, as the Red Devils made it five wins from five in their pre-season tour of the United State with victory over Liverpool in Miami.

The Dutchman, however, has been quick to taper expectations by claiming his new side will struggle in the opening stages of the forthcoming season as they continue to adapt to his implemented 3-5-2 formation.

The change in formation has brought with it the introduction of wing backs, something the Old Trafford club have rarely experienced under previous managers.

A quick glance over United’s squad shows how little equipped they are to fully excel in this particular area, with Rafael the only natural choice, given his defensive experience and ability to get forward.

Van Gaal has tried to remedy this by signing Luke Shaw to operate on the left hand side, while also fielding Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young as alternatives with varying success.

With injury once again plaguing Rafael – he was forced to leave United’s pre-season camp in America early – questions are starting to arise as to whether he really warrants being a first choice.

Van Gaal has hinted there will be further additions before the close of the summer transfer window – and if that proves to be true then right wing back is an area that needs to be addressed.

Fortunately, United’s answer could come in the form of Barcelona star Dani Alves. According to reports in Spain, the Brazilian has been told he can leave the Camp Nou, with a price of just €6.2m (£5m) being touted for his signature.

He may be 31 years old and slowly on the decline, but there can be little doubting he would be the perfect addition to United’s ranks. His years of experience in playing a similar role at Barcelona suggest that he would be able to step into the starting XI with ease, and his qualities in both attacking and tracking back are perfectly suited to what Van Gaal demands from his wide men.

With Van Gaal’s influence on Barcelona still arguably being felt today, Alves has already excelled in the style of football he would expect to experience in Manchester, so must be worth considering.



If that isn’t convincing enough, his statistics add further weight. While it’s evident from the figures above that Alves is no longer at the supreme heights he scaled during the 2011/12 season, he still remains a remarkable operator.

His 20 assists over the past three seasons (including three from last year) is a return more akin to a midfielder or attacker than a defender, while the amount of goal scoring chances created last season (38) is a measure of his continued effectiveness in the final third.

The gulf in class when compared to Rafael strengthens Alves’ case further. A total of 1878 completed passes last year with an accuracy of 87.38 per cent compared to Rafael’s 666 passes and accuracy of 78.83 per cent underlines that Alves is still comfortable and capable with the ball at his feet – a hugely important facet of Van Gaal’s playing philosophy.

Indeed he isn’t just an attacking entity either. Alves’ defensive work is largely overlooked due to his impact in the final third, but his incredible engine means he tracks back almost as much as he gets forward. To put that into context, his 82 tackles was almost double that which Rafael mustered (42), underlining that this is still a player with a lot to offer.

His signing may not particularly be one for the future, but Van Gaal doesn’t necessarily have the luxury of building for three years time. He will be judged on his immediate success and with the pressure to get Man United back to the top increasing as time goes on he needs complete players to help him. Dani Alves is that type of player.

But the 31-year-old has been unable to agree a new deal with the Catalan club and will leave the Nou Camp this summer.

Dinorah Santana, the player's agent and ex-wife, said at a press conference on Thursday that her client had rejected the offer of a three-year contract extension, which was dependent on the player taking part in 60 per cent of matches for the club.

'The negotiations are over,' she said.

'If they say this is the final offer, then they (negotiations) are over.

'It doesn't make sense. It's very hard that we get to April and Barcelona haven't thought about renewing Dani's contract.

'Dani is sad.'

The news that Alves is to leave is likely to spark a scramble for the defender's signature.

The former Sevilla full-back has been linked with Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as Paris Saint-Germain.

Santana said Alves has two offers on the table at the moment, but has not yet been approached by big-spending PSG.

'He has had conversations with future candidates,' Santana said.

'PSG have not made an offer, but we have two offers of three years.'
