'As a team, we are improving but we want to improve a lot more': Harry Maguire sends strong message to Manchester United team-mates ahead of testing week in the Premier League

* Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa on Sunday
* They already sit eight points off the top four after 14 Premier League matches
* United face Tottenham and Manchester City in the Premier League this week
* Harry Maguire has urged his team-mates to improve ahead of a testing week

Harry Maguire has urged his Manchester United team-mates to step up and be counted ahead of a crunch week of Premier League action.

The Red Devils were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon as their worst start to a Premier League campaign in 33 years continued.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who already sit eight points off the top four, now face a testing week in the top flight, coming up against former manager Jose Mourinho's Tottenham at home before travelling to rivals Manchester City at the weekend.

Harry Maguire insists Man United are heading in the right direction but still need to improve

And Maguire, who is trying to remain upbeat about United's slump, has urged his team-mates to keep improving in their quest to cut the deficit between them and the Champions League hopefuls.

After the final whistle on Sunday, the England international said: 'As a team, we are improving but we want to improve a lot more.

'To not win games at home is disappointing. We huffed and puffed but we need to do better and Wednesday [at home to Tottenham] gives us a great opportunity to put that right.

'We were poor after their first goal. It knocked us and we were edgy and nervous.

'To concede straight away after going in front is disappointing. We dominated for large parts of the second half.'

Harry Maguire doesn't know why 'sloppy' Manchester United keep losing to 'lower opposition' after embarrassing Watford defeat

* Harry Maguire said the Manchester United were 'sloppy' in 2-0 Watford defeat
* The defender said Jesse Lingard should have scored from his first-half chip
* Maguire also backed David Dea Gea to not lose confidence after his howler
* The £80million man doesn't know why they keep losing to 'lower opposition'

Harry Maguire said Manchester United were 'sloppy' in their 2-0 defeat by bottom of the table Watford.

United failed to take some golden chances early on and paid the price in the second half as Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney fired home for the Hornets on Nigel Pearson's first match in charge at Vicarage Road.

The £80million defender admitted the whole team were not at their best, which was surprising given their resent results against Manchester City and Tottenham.

'We were sloppy,' explained a dejected Maguire to Sky Sports.

Harry Maguire has admitted that Manchester United were 'sloppy' in their 2-0 loss to Watford. United missed early chances and Watford scored a quick double early in the second half. The United captain said he does not know why his side struggle against the 'lower opposition'

'As a team gave the ball away numerous times especially in the first half. I feel the game was there to be won. There were gaps for us but we kept being sloppy with the ball.

'We should have scored in the first half. Weíve had best chance of the game, we have to score that.'

Jesse Lingard missed a great chance in the first half to give United the lead and Maguire admitted his teammate should have buried it.

'He (Lingard) knows he has got to score,' said Maguire.

'Itís a big chance, the first goal is crucial against these sort of teams. I missed one against Newcastle. He missed it and we move on.'

Manchester United have struggled against opposition lower than themselves in the table this season and the England international is unsure why that is.

'Itís something we cant put our finger on, we are working hard in training and thatís all we can do. We come prepared. Itís disappointing. When you play the so called lower opposition the first goal is always crucial.'

Goalkeeper David De Gea was at fault for Watford's opener, as the ball slipped through his fingers from a mishit from Ismaila Sarr but Maguire has no doubt it wont affect the Spaniard's confidence.

'David is a top goalkeeper, I've only been here a few months but I can tell he is world class. We will get round him.'

Harry Maguire 'seems quite cheap' for £80m, says former Manchester United defender Wes Brown, as he hails him for bringing 'calmness' to the defence

* Harry Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester last summer for £80m
* He has been an ever-present at the back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side
* Former United defender Wes Brown has praised the effect the defender has had

Harry Maguire has proved a steal for Manchester United at £80million, according to one former defender.

Wes Brown spent 15 years at Old Trafford as a professional and was lauded by boss Sir Alex Ferguson as England's most natural defender during his time there.

Having lifted five Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies during his time at United, he is no stranger to what is needed at the back to create success.

Harry Maguire has proved real value for money for Manchester United, says Wes Brown. Brown has also praised the England central defender for instilling calmness at the back

And in Maguire, he sees a player with the attributes needed to help drive United on.

'I actually think it seems quite cheap nowadays,' Brown told Sky Sports.

'I think he's brought a calmness to the whole defence. He's still relatively young, but he's very experienced already. He has an awareness about him and he's very good on his positioning.

'There are games where you don't really notice him, but that's just because he's doing his job. He's winning his headers, he's laying it off. We're more solid with him at the back.

'He gives you a kind of, "we can do this" attitude and that's especially true when he has been playing with Victor Lindelof. They have complimented each other well.

'Sometimes it can take time to figure out which players work with which players, but those two have formed a good partnership.'

MAGUIRE TO BE NEW UNITED CAPTAIN

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Harry Maguire will be Manchester United’s new captain.

The 26-year-old has been skipper for the Reds on 12 occasions this season and, with Ashley Young on the verge of a move to Inter Milan, the boss said he will now lead the team out on a permanent basis.

“Harry has been wearing the captain's armband and he will keep wearing it,” Solskjaer told reporters at the Aon Training Complex.

David De Gea, Axel Tuanzebe, Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford have also captained the side this season, while Jesse Lingard took the armband for our trip to Astana, when Ole opted to play a youthful XI.

Although Maguire only joined the club from Leicester City in August, Ole suggested the England international had made an instant impact on the rest of the squad.

“He's come in and been a leader in the group. I've been, not surprised, but I've been impressed by his leadership skills, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.

“He's come in and everything about him tells me he is a leader. He's part of a group that we've had, that have been leading this young group.

“Ashley has been of course, Marcus is a young lad, but also David, Harry. So Harry will keep on wearing the armband now.”

Sunday will be Maguire's first trip to Anfield as a United player, although he has good memories of the ground from his time at Leicester City.

He scored the equaliser for the Foxes in a 1-1 draw there in February 2019, which is the last instance of the Merseysiders dropping points at home in the Premier League.

Ditunjuk Jadi Kapten MU, Maguire Ungkap Pesan dari Solskjaer
Yanu Arifin - detikSport

Manchester - Harry Maguire resmi menjadi kapten anyar Manchester United.

Debut Maguire menjadi kapten MU pun cukup spesial. Ia akan memimpin rekan-rekannya menghadapi pemuncak klasemen Liga Inggris, Liverpool, di Stadion Anfield, Minggu (19/1/2020).

'I'm concerned when a new player is given the captaincy': Roy Keane says Harry Maguire being made skipper at Manchester United raises doubts about other players... but admits he comes across as a 'sensible lad'

* Roy Keane believes Harry Maguire becoming Man United captain raises doubts
* The England international had been handed the armband permanently this week
* But ex-United skipper Keane says the choice calls other players into question
* Keane also admitted that Maguire appears 'a sensible lad' before Liverpool clash

Roy Keane believes that Harry Maguire becoming Manchester United's new permanent captain calls other players at the club into question.

The England international moved from Leicester at the start of the season for a world-record fee for a defender, and has already taken up the mantle left behind by Ashley Young's departure.

But despite Maguire already having donned the armband on multiple occasions since signing, Keane says that the decision raises doubts over individuals that were already established at the Old Trafford.

And as Maguire prepares to lead the team out against rampant league leaders Liverpool on Sunday, Keane told Sky Sports: 'I'm concerned when a new player is giving the captaincy as it doesn't say much about the other lads, but he's a good age and he comes across as a sensible lad.'

United's mark of confidence in the 26-year-old was backed up by boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praising Maguire's leadership abilities, and ex-captain Keane also explained how the centre back could approach his new role.

He added: 'It's all about the team. Don't be distracted by it, by the captaincy, enjoy it. You don't need the armband to be a leader but he does seem very proud of it.

Roy Keane says Harry Maguire becoming Man United's captain raises doubts over players. The England international was handed the armband permanently after Ashley Young departed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Maguire's leadership after confirming the change of skipper

'It is a big responsibility. I always try to focus on trying to be the best player in training, the best player on a weekend and hopefully the rest of the players will follow.'

Another club legend, Gary Neville, congratulated Maguire on Twitter earlier in the week but then warned him that he will likely face criticism both on and off the field.

The pundit said: 'Congratulations! The s*** will come thick and fast in the next year or two.

'Stick at it as you are the captain of the biggest club in the world and it will rise and win again.'

And although Solskjaer has alluded to a leadership group at the club, the Norwegian stressed that Maguire would remain at the forefront of it.

Speaking on Friday, he explained: 'Harry is wearing the captain's armband and will keep wearing it. He's been a leader in the group, I've been impressed by his leadership skills, so he will continue wearing the armband.

'He's come in and everything about him tells me he's a leader, he's part of a group we've had that have been leading this young group, David (de Gea), Marcus (Rashford), Harry, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.'

'The captain has to go up with desire... what are you doing there Maguire?!': Rio Ferdinand slams new Manchester United skipper for his role in Burnley's opener

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United Harry Maguire as he branded him responsible for Burnley's first goal at Old Trafford.

The Clarets stunned the Red Devils on Wednesday night beating the 13-time Premier League champions 2-0 thanks to Chris Wood's first-half strike and a thumping effort in the second period by Jay Rodriguez.

United's performance resulted in thousands of empty seats and a chorus of boos at Old Trafford and while it rams the pressure up on manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, former defender Ferdinand put the newly-appointed Manchester United captain in the spotlight and highlighted his failing for Chris Wood's 39th minute opener.

Rio Ferdinand says Harry Maguire was too soft for Burnley's opening goal at Old Trafford. Former defender Ferdinand believes that Maguire should have done better as United skipper

He told BT Sport: "Go up and win it, show some desire, Maguire as the captain has to go up with desire.

"What are you doing there Maguire!? He starts in a great position with his arm out, he can feel Chris Wood.

"But then he doesnít anticipate it. you canít be that far off and leave your man there. He (Wood) then gets in front of him, not good enough, and punished."

Maguire was only handed the captain's armband at Old Trafford last week following the departure of Ashley Young to Serie A title challengers Inter Milan.

The appointment led to a few raised eyebrows from certain sections of Manchester United supporters, consdering that Maguire was a Leicester City player six months ago.

The England international has not made the impact that Red Devils supporters anticipated he would after his £70 million move, as United have now conceded 29 goals in 24 games, compared to just 24 by former club Leicester.

Solskjaer's side now lie fifth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth placed Chelsea who were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Tuesday night.

MAGUIRE: WE WILL DEFINITELY TAKE THE POSITIVES

Harry Maguire admits the Manchester United dressing room was flat on Wednesday night, after exiting the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage, but the club captain is adamant there are positives to take from a second away win over Manchester City this season.

After losing 3-1 in this month’s first leg at Old Trafford, the Reds visited the Etihad Stadium knowing that only a three-goal victory in normal time would secure progression to the final at Wembley.

The comeback was seemingly on when Nemanja Matic put United 1-0 up with a tidy first-half finish, before a harsh-looking red card for the Serbian, after the break, hampered the team’s ability to conjure a priceless second goal that would have forced a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

In the end, United could only win by one goal on the night and the Carabao Cup campaign has unfortunately come to an end, yet Maguire remains upbeat in his assessment of the night.

“We will definitely take the positives from the game,” says the skipper. “The dressing room, at the moment, is disappointed and a bit flat. It is a bit strange because we have won the game and done well on the night, but the first 45 minutes at Old Trafford has cost us the tie. We were arguably the better side in the second half at Old Trafford and then we have come to the Etihad. We knew it was an uphill task, we gave ourselves every chance in the second half but it just wasn't to be.

“We knew that the first goal was crucial,” continues Maguire. “We felt that, if we got the first goal, then we would go on to win the tie. That wasn't to be. We felt like the last 15 to 20 minutes, we could have put them under a lot of pressure, it would have been a nervous stadium and maybe we could have got something, or created more chances than we did. We obviously had the free-kick on the edge of the box, which was a great chance. We huffed and puffed, we worked tirelessly and we won the game on the night, but, ultimately, the first 45 minutes at Old Trafford has cost us the tie.”

On the subject of Matic’s red card, received for two bookable offences, Maguire admits the loss of a key midfielder had an impact on the team’s attack – yet there is no fault at Nemanja’s door.

“It is tough to create chances here,” says Harry. “They are a good side and they have proved it over the last five years. At half-time we were in the perfect position. We wanted to stay in the game until the last 20 minutes, when we knew we could create momentum and pressure, like we did at Anfield [against Liverpool]. It is hard enough to get the ball off them when it is 11 v 11. We obviously lose Nemanja, who was excellent on the night, so there is no blame on him, but it was difficult when we went down to 10.”

United return to action on Saturday with an important Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford and Maguire feels the squad must come out fighting, before enjoying a two-week winter break that will recharge the batteries.

“Yeah, it is really important,” he states. “We have one last big push before the lads can put their feet up and have a little rest, which I do feel we need.

“I think you saw in the second half that we looked a bit tired in our pressing. It is one last big push, we need a big result against Wolves, we need to come out fighting and put on a good performance.”

Harry Maguire insists there are positives to take from another win at the Etihad... but the Manchester United captain admits the squad 'deserve and need' a winter break

* Manchester United beat neighbours City 1-0 on Tuesday night at the Etihad
* It wasn't enough to overturn the semi-final deficit - Man City will play in the final
* Captain Harry Maguire said it was a struggle once Nemanja Matic was sent off

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire took the positives from another Etihad Stadium win but did admit the squad 'deserve and need' a winter break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called for the spirit of Paris St Germain and the 'perfect performance' as United attempted to bounce back from their chastening 3-1 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg loss against Man City.

But their feeble first-half display at Old Trafford three weeks ago ultimately proved their undoing, with Nemanja Matic securing a 1-0 win on the night only for City to progress 3-2 on aggregate

'We will definitely take the positives from the game,' United skipper Maguire said. 'The dressing room, at the moment, is disappointed and a bit flat.

'It's strange because we have won the game and we've done well on the night, but the first 45 minutes at Old Trafford has cost us the tie.

'We were arguably the better side in the second half at Old Trafford and then we have come to the Etihad.

'We knew it was an uphill task, we gave ourselves every chance in the second half but it just wasn't to be.'

United ended City's 19-match unbeaten run in domestic cup competitions as they won consecutive away matches at their rivals for the first time since triumphing in four-straight matches between 1993 and 2000.

The United captain kept a clean sheet but that wasn't enough for progression to the final

Last month's 2-1 win and the victory on Wednesday show what Solskjaer's side can produce, but they were just unable to ratchet up the pressure on a night when goalscorer Matic was sent off in the closing stages.

'It is tough to create chances here,' Maguire said.

'They are a good side and they have proved it over the last five years. At half-time we were in the perfect position.

'We wanted to stay in the game until the last 20 minutes, when we knew we could create momentum and pressure, like we did at Anfield.

'It's hard enough to get the ball off them when it is 11 v 11.

'We obviously lose Nemanja, who was excellent on the night, so there is no blame on him, but it was difficult when we went down to 10.'

Matic will miss Saturday's Premier League clash with Wolves through suspension as a result of the sending off.

United have a much-needed two-week winter break to look forward to after that Old Trafford clash and skipper Maguire underlined the need for a win.

'Yeah, it is really important,' the England defender told MUTV.

'One last big push before the lads can put their feet up and have a little rest, which I feel like we do deserve and we need.

'I think you saw in the second half that we looked a bit tired in our pressing.

'It is one last big push, we need a big result against Wolves, and we need to come out fighting and put on a performance.'

Harry Maguire admits Manchester United have been 'poor' from set-plays but he's confident of building a great partnership with Victor Lindelof

* Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United to defend set-plays better
* Despite recent clean sheets, Maguire believes there's improvement to be made
* He has however been encouraged by defensive partnership with Victor Lindelof

Harry Maguire has admitted Manchester United must improve their defending of set-plays but believes he is building a solid partnership with Victor Lindelof.

Maguire has become a vital figure of United's backline and has taken on captain duties since joining in the summer for a world-record £80million fee from Leicester.

The England international was brought in to tighten up United's defence, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team are still leaking goals too often for Maguire's liking.

Despite registering three successive clean sheets against Tranmere, Manchester City and Wolves, Maguire admitted there is still a lot of improvement to be made.

'We're keeping a lot more clean sheets than we were at the start of season and we've never really been a team which has conceded a lot of chances,' Maguire told United's official website.

'We've been poor from set-plays with our defending and we've had a couple of great goals scored against us from outside the box, but we haven't really been having games where David [De Gea] has had to make five or six saves, apart from maybe the Carabao Cup second leg against [Manchester] City, when David was brilliant.'

Maguire called on United to improve their defending of set plays despite recent clean sheets

Solskjaer has consistently played Maguire and Lindelof as his centre-back pairing this season and the 26-year-old says he has been encouraged by how they have performed together.

Maguire added: 'It's a partnership that's building and I think we'll get better and better, and start keeping more clean sheets like we have been doing recently.'

United have been spending the winter break training in Marbella and will return to action on Monday evening in a battle for the Champions League spots against Chelsea.
