Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers admits he may not be able to stop £70million-rated James Maddison moving to Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues homegrown revolution

* James Maddison has been linked with a £70million move to Manchester United
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees Maddison as another piece to his homegrown side
* Brendan Rodgers saw star man Harry Maguire leave for £80million this summer
* The Leicester boss understands the draw of the big clubs for young players

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that an approach for Leicester star James Maddison may be too good to refuse as Manchester United's interest in the midfielder shows no signs of fading.

The 22-year-old joined the Foxes last summer in a £24million move from East Anglian club Norwich City. Since his arrival in the Premier League, the England U21 international has continued to impress, with reports suggesting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to land the playmaker.

Solsjkaer has overseen a homegrown revolution since taking the helm at Old Trafford, with an impetus for signing young British players.

James Maddison has been identified as a £70million target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side

This summer he has brought in the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Harry Maguire to accompany young talents Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood.

And Rodgers, who became manager of the 2015-16 Premier League champions in February this year, conceded that keeping hold of his £70m-rated star man may prove difficult.

He said: ‘I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been at Liverpool where I understand the draw of that type of club. Liverpool and Manchester United are two of the biggest clubs by far.

‘There’s other great clubs, there’s big clubs, but those two, in terms of worldwide status, are above the other clubs.'

Rodgers understands the difficulties of keeping hold of his best players, having seen centre half Maguire leave the club for United in an £80m move earlier this summer.

‘Whenever a player gets an opportunity to go to a club like that, to experience that type of pressure, that expectation – and of course there’ll be a financial side to it as well, let’s be real – that as a package in a short career is maybe something that is too hard to turn down.

‘I understand it, I get it.’

James Maddison 'likely to sign new deal' at Leicester City as Manchester United's pursuit of midfield star is set to take more twists and turns

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long been an admired of Leicester's James Maddison
* Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder
* Reports suggest Leicester could extend his contract to increase his value
* United could be challenged by Liverpool and Spurs for Maddison's signature

Manchester United's pursuit of James Maddison is set to take more twists and turns amid reports that Leicester could tie their star man down to a new deal in order to increase his value.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long been an admirer of the 22-year-old as the United boss plans a rebuild of a depleted squad over the next 12 months. Maddison has been identified as a player that fits the ball for the Norwegian.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, club chiefs at the King Power Stadium are said to be keen to tie the midfielder down to a new deal in order to protect the value of an asset garnering increased attention by multiple clubs.

Leicester are looking to extend James Maddison's contract to increase his transfer value. Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old midfielder

Manchester United may be rivalled by Premier League foes Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to obtain the signature of the Englishmen. League champions Manchester City, however, aren't interested in signing the player.

Mixed signals are coming out of both camps regarding the future of the Leicester man. Some believe Maddison will be a United player by next summer, while others feel Leicester will let their player go at some point during his extended deal.

Solskjaer has striven to bring in more players that fit what he views as the 'United mould'. Summer signings Harry Maguire, Dan James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have all been earmarked as players to build the future team around, with the characteristics of young, hungry and British being demanded by Solskjaer.

United could face competition from Liverpool and Spurs for Maddison's signature though. Maddison is said to be happy and gets on well with his team-mates and Brendan Rodgers

However, should Spurs and Liverpool join the race for Maddison, United may face a struggle to land their man. The draw of Champions League football, which will certainly be offered by the latter club, may be decisive in where the Englishman plays next.

Maddison is said to be happy at Leicester and gets on well with his team-mates and manager Brendan Rodgers.

United will hope their previous good working relationship with Leicester can give them an advantage in signing Maddison. Chief Executive Ed Woodward struck a deal with the east Midlands club in the summer for defender Harry Maguire and will go back again for the midfielder.

James Maddison is considering turning down Manchester United by signing a new contract with Leicester.

And he meets the criteria Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for which is someone that is respectful and humble.

United want to have a finalised list of their summer targets by January and Maddison fits the profile.

Maddison turns 23 this month and United believe that is the perfect age to sign a player.

The Leicester midfielder is also a boyhood United fan and close with former colleague Maguire.

Maddison has a contract with the Foxes until 2023 but having earned his first England cap, Leicester are ready to agree new terms.

But a new contract is not understood to be close and Maddison could wait until the end of the season before deciding on his future.

Leicester start negotiations with James Maddison over a new contract as Foxes could DOUBLE his £50,000-a-week wages to scare off interest from Manchester United

* Leicester have begun talks with James Maddison and could double his wages
* The midfielder has three and half years left on his current £50,000-a-week deal
* Manchester United are rumoured to be interested after a stellar season so far

Leicester have opened initial talks with James Maddison over a bumper new contract with the England midfielder the subject of interest from Manchester United.

The midfielder, who turns 23 on Saturday, has three and a half years left on his current deal and is currently earning about £50,000 a week at the King Power Stadium.

Although discussions are only at an early stage, it is thought Maddison could expect to double his current salary if both parties can reach an agreement.

James Maddison could be tied down to a new contract at Leicester after an impressive season. The midfielder has blossomed under the guidance of manager Brendan Rodgers at the club

Maddison earned his first senior England cap against Montenegro last week and is pushing hard for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2020. His excellent form this season has also attracted interest from United, who signed Harry Maguire from Leicester last summer.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has been hugely encouraged by Maddison's form this term, which has helped the Foxes reach second in the table. Maddison has four goals in two assists in the league this term.

Rodgers also warned rival clubs targeting Leicester players in January that their approaches were unlikely to be successful.

Along with Maddison, left back Ben Chilwell is on the radar of Chelsea if their transfer ban is lifted, while centre backs Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu have also attracted interest from wealthier clubs.

Rodgers said: 'The worst-case scenario for us is we'll have the same squad as we have now which I'm very happy with.

'There's a lot of development left in this squad. Every club will lose players at some point but we've absolutely no plans to lose anyone in January.

'Our job is to keep what we have, which is important and, if there's an opportunity to improve the squad we will look to do that. If not we will carry on with the squad we have, which is very strong.'

Meanwhile, defender Jonny Evans is available for Saturday's trip to Brighton despite spending time in hospital with a stomach virus during the international break.

Evans missed Northern Ireland's Euro 2020 qualifying defeat in Germany with the illness but Rodgers is confident he will be ready when the Premier League resumes.

He added: 'He had an issue with his stomach and he had to go into hospital for a few days. Thankfully he's come back in, feels much better and he trained today and did a light bit yesterday. He should be fit and well.'

Manchester United face missing out on James Maddison as star Leicester midfielder closes in on signing bumper new contract

* Manchester United have long been interested in signing James Maddison
* Leicester and England midfielder has been a standout player for the Foxes
* But the club are making moves to give him a new contract and stave off interest
* Leicester are flying high in the Premier League with eight wins in succession

Leicester are close to tying James Maddison to a new contract, dealing a transfer blow to Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long been an admirer of the attacking midfielder, whose performances have helped the Foxes to second in the Premier League and eight wins in succession.

And, having secured the future of Brendan Rodgers until 2025 in a deal worth £40million, Leicester want to keep hold of their big stars, starting with Maddison, according to the Mirror.

James Maddison is close to agreeing a new Leicester deal with a significant pay rise. The midfielder has been in superb form for the Foxes, who are second in the Premier League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long been an admirer of Maddison but could miss out on him

The 23-year-old currently earns £60,000 per week on a deal until 2023 and is in line for a significant pay rise if he agrees new terms.

He's been ever present for Rodgers' side and made his England debut for Gareth Southgate last month.

Leicester have lost the likes of Harry Maguire, N'Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez to United, Chelsea and City respectively in the past and are desperate to ensure their swashbuckling side stay together.

Another key man in line for a new deal is central defender Caglar Soyuncu, who has been a key reason for their stingy defence this season, with the title contenders only conceding 10 goals in 16 Premier League games.

Soyuncu is contracted until 2023 and currently earns £45,000 per week.

Both Maddison and Soyuncu are expected to be in action again for Leicester when they welcome Norwich on Saturday before away games at Everton in the EFL Cup and then Manchester City.

'He's a talented player who will be here in January and beyond': Brendan Rodgers insists Leicester are under no pressure to sell James Maddison amid Manchester United interest

* Leicester have been superb and James Maddison is a key player for Foxes
* Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing the playmaker
* But Brendan Rodgers insists the club are not under pressure to sell Maddison

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers insists there is no pressure for the club to sell James Maddison.

Speaking ahead of the first leg of their League Cup semi-final with Aston Villa on Wednesday, Rodgers said he was hopeful the 23-year-old would sign a new deal

Manchester United are interested in Maddison, who has scored nine goals and provided three assists in all competitions this season.

'James is a talented player and he'll be here in January and beyond... there's no message (to United). Nobody will leave in January, that's for sure,' Rodgers said.

'He's a player we're keen to remain here and help us on this journey over the next years. James and his representatives are speaking with the club and these things take time.'

Ben Chilwell is another key player linked with a move away from Leicester, with Chelsea and Manchester City among those clubs interested.

'There's no pressure to sell, and there's no need for us to sell. We've got a really strong squad and lots of them are young players evolving,' Rodgers added.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted there is no pressure for Leicester to sell James Maddison. Maddison's performances this season have led to interest from a number of top clubs

'We want to (add players) but if we can't we'll continue with the squad we've got and look to reinforce in the summer.'

Rodgers is looking to extend his 30-match unbeaten run in cup competitions stretching back to his spell at Scotland's Celtic where he won several trophies.

Striker Jamie Vardy is in contention to feature on Wednesday after overcoming a minor calf injury that ruled him out of Leicester's last three games.

Manchester United 'optimistic they can bring in James Maddison from Leicester in the summer window' with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to overhaul his midfield

* Manchester United are said to be keen on a move for Leicester's James Maddison
* Reports say that the club are 'optimistic' that they can seal a move in the summer
* Maddison is a mainstay in the Leicester side and they will fight to keep him there
* United are looking to add creativity to their problem area which is their midfield

Manchester United are 'optimistic' that they can sign James Maddison from Leicester City in the summer, according to reports.

The English playmaker has seen his value rocket having established himself as a key member of the Foxes' side as they continue to look set to secure Champions League football.

United are said to be open to negotiating a move in January but the Manchester Evening News report that the club accept that is unlikely, and will instead focus their efforts on signing him come the summer.

James Maddison is a primary transfer target for Manchester United as they eye midfielders. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to move for Maddison in the summer with January tough for deals

United could well turn to defender Harry Maguire, who joined United from Leicester last summer for a world record £80million for a defender, to go on the charm offensive to convince Maddison to move.

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of Leicester's best players this season and has scored some stunners on way to posting nine goals and three assists from 23 appearances.

It is reported that the summer is a more available window to acquire Maddison with his representatives, according to the MEN, 'surprised' were he to move in January.

Maddison, who won his first senior England cap in November, fits the brief of what United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is after.

The Norwegian has targeted young, homegrown talents since taking the job on a permanent basis, with Welsh winger Daniel James joining English pair Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But he may decide to sign a new deal to remain at Leicester and is likely to wait until the summer before weighing up his future.

Maddison's current deal runs until 2023 and while Leicester will be under no pressure to sell him, they will know they may need to make a show of commitment to him to keep suitors like United at bay.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers addressed talk of Maddison leaving in January and dismissed it out of hand.

'James is a very talented player and he will be here in January and beyond,' he said.

'He's a player we're keen to keep here and help us on this journey over the next few years.

'James and his representatives are speaking with the club. These things take time but his level has not dropped. He is playing at a high level. There's no pressure to sell and no need to sell.'

Manchester United and Arsenal receive transfer blow as summer target James Maddison 'closes in on new Leicester contract' as Foxes aim to ward off interest from his suitors

* James Maddison is closing in on signing a lucrative new contract at Leicester
* The talented midfielder is wanted by both Manchester United and Arsenal
* Leicester are eager to keep Maddison, whose current deal runs until 2023

Manchester United and Arsenal could be left frustrated in their pursuit of James Maddison, with Leicester closing in on tying the talented midfielder to a new contract.

Maddison is wanted by both United and Arsenal, who could battle it out to sign him in the summer transfer window.

However, as reported by The Telegraph, Maddison's representatives are in advanced negotiations over a lurcative long-term contract for the 23-year-old.

Manchester United and Arsenal could miss out on the signing of Leicester's James Maddison. Maddison's representatives are in advanced talks with Leicester over a lucrative new contract

Since joining from Norwich in 2018, Maddison has become one of the most exciting players to watch in the Premier League and has also been capped by England at senior level.

This season Maddison has scored six goals and provided three assists in 24 league appearances as Brendan Rodgers' side have defied expectations to be in contention for a second place finish.

Maddison's current contract is set to run until the summer of 2023, but the Foxes are eager for him to sign fresh terms.

Despite having brought in Bruno Fernandes, United are eager to add more quality to their midfield, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side having been sorely lacking in creativity for much of this campaign.

Arsenal's midfield is also in need of an overhaul, especially when it is taken into consideration that Mesut Ozil, who is tasked with being the Gunners' creator-in-chief, has provided just one assist in 15 Premier League games this season.

James Maddison set to pen new five-year £100,000-a-week contract to STAY at Leicester City... all but ending Manchester United's hopes of landing the England midfielder this summer

* James Maddison's new Leicester City contract is expected to double his salary
* New deal will help ward off midfielder's long time admirers Manchester United
* Maddison has proved key to the Foxes this term in their top-five finish
* His late-season surgery coincided with Leicester dropping out of the top four

James Maddison is poised to give Leicester a post-season boost by finalising a new contract worth £100,000-a-week at the King Power Stadium.

The midfielder’s five-year deal is expected to double his salary and is rewarded for two impressive seasons with the Foxes, in which he has scored 13 goals and had 10 assists in the Premier League.

Maddison’s new terms would take him closer to Leicester’s top earners and ensures the club will hang on to one of their top assets during the transfer window.

Manchester United have a long-term interest in Maddison and would have been able to offer Champions League football.

The 23-year-old is hopeful of rejoining his team-mates for pre-season training early next month despite undergoing minor hip surgery earlier in July, to cure a problem that restricted him to just two league starts since football resumed in June.

Maddison’s absence hurt Leicester greatly during the post-lockdown period and was a key factor in their failure to hang on to the top-four spot they had occupied for most of the campaign.

As a result, Brendan Rodgers’ team will miss out on Champions League prize money though they will compete in the Europa League.

Rodgers is keen to improve the squad before 2020-21 begins and Sportsmail understands the Leicester boss is keen to add a centre-back and a wide forward as a priority.

Rodgers wants greater goal threat from wide areas, with the Foxes still hugely reliant on the 33-year-old Jamie Vardy - the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner - in attack.

Leicester City have confirmed that James Maddison has signed a new four-year deal at the club.

Sportsmail revealed last month that the midfielder was close to finalising a new contract worth £100,000-a-week at the King Power Stadium.

The England international - who scored nine goals for the Foxes in 2019-20 - is expected to have doubled his salary with the new deal which signals the end of Manchester United's hopes of signing him this summer.

James Maddison has penned a new four-year deal to stay at Leicester City until 2024. Sportsmail revealed last month that he was close to finalising a new deal with the club

The Old Trafford club have a long-term interest in Maddison and would have been able to offer Champions League football, but the 23-year-old has chosen to extend his deal with the East Midlands side until 2024.

'I'm so happy to sign a new contract for this football club,' Maddison told the club's official website.

'It's an incredibly exciting time to be a Leicester City player with so many positive things happening on and off the pitch and I'm delighted to be part of that.

'What we've achieved as a club this season is a huge step forward for us and I know there's so much more to come from this team.

'I've enjoyed every moment since joining Leicester City.

'The supporters have been incredible to me and we've a fantastic set of players in that dressing room who are determined to show what we're capable of doing together in both Europe and the Premier League next season.'

Maddison underwent minor hip surgery last month to cure a problem that restricted him to just two Premier League starts since football resumed in June.

The news all but ends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United's hopes of signing him. Maddison has scored 16 goals in 76 games for Leicester since joining from Norwich in 2018. He had hip surgery last month after he was restricted to just two league starts since June

Maddison's absence hurt Leicester greatly during the post-lockdown period and was a key factor in their failure to hang on to the top-four spot they had occupied for most of the campaign.

But his new contract will come as a huge boost to the club given the impending departure of left back Ben Chilwell to Chelsea and will raise hopes he can kick on again after fully recovering from his injury.

Maddison made his debut for Leicester against Manchester United in the first game of the 2018-19 season after joining from Norwich City.

He has since scored 16 goals in 76 appearances for the club and made his England debut against Montenegro in a Euro 2020 qualifier last November.
