Lawrence eyes Wales debut



Tom Lawrence hopes to impress new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on Wednesday when Wales face the Netherlands at the Amsterdam Arena.

The Reds youngster made his first-team debut during last month’s 3-1 win over Hull City and is now braced to make his international bow for the Welsh. As Lawrence admits, this midweek encounter is an early chance to shine in front of United's new boss.

“If I play, it could be an early chance to catch Louis van Gaal’s eye, which will be great, but I’m sure he’ll be concentrating on the World Cup,” the 20-year-old told Wales Online, before expanding on his own ambitions for the coming weeks and months.

“If you had said to me a year ago I would be hoping to play for Wales against Holland in Amsterdam, I probably wouldn’t have believed you,” Tom continues. “But that’s the way this season’s been for me, it’s been unbelievable.

“Making my debut for United was a dream come true and now the chance to play for Wales is fantastic. It’s ahead of schedule; the plan was to continue developing with the Under-21s for United and Wales but, when the chance comes, you want to catch the eye.

“It’s good just being around the squad and obviously a game like this is massive and great experience. But it would be good to have more than just a feel of being in the squad. I want to play games and make my mark and I feel I can do that.”

Lawrence was handed his first-team debut by Ryan Giggs, who later replaced the Wrexham-born prospect to make his final Reds appearance before announcing his retirement. Understandably, the club legend has been a huge help to United’s new Welsh wizard.

“He’s a great influence,” Lawrence said of Giggs. “It’s good that he’s still going to be there at United as he obviously believes in me because he gave me my debut. Hopefully, I can repay him and United by showing him my talents and how good I can be.

“It was nice to be the one he replaced in his last game. It was a bit of a surprise but I didn’t have much time to get nervous about it. The manager called me into the office the day before and said I was in his plans but I didn’t know if I was going to be coming off the bench, let alone starting. To then get the nod was incredible. I prepared myself right and hopefully did myself justice.

“It’s something I can look back on, being involved in his last game. It was an unbelievable moment and hopefully [there will be] a few more like that in my career because, once you get a taste, you want more and more. We’ll have to see but things are looking upwards.”

Official: Manchester United duo Lawrence and Powell join Leicester City

The Foxes must wait for Premier League clearance but the young pair look set to add depth to Nigel Pearson's squad as they look to establish themselves in the top flight
Leicester City have completed deals to bring Manchester United youngsters Tom Lawrence and Nick Powell to the King Power Stadium.

Lawrence has signed a four-year deal after a reported fee of £2 million was agreed while Powell moves on a season-long loan deal, though both deals are subject to Premier League clearance.

Twenty-year-old Lawrence only made his debut for the Red Devils in the win over Hull City in May, and despite being compared to Ryan Giggs during his time with the club's academy, will not be given the chance to prove his credentials at Old Trafford.

Powell, meanwhile, spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at Wigan Athletic and will look to continue his development by playing Premier League football with the newly-promoted Foxes.

Should their deals be ratified, the pair could make their debuts for Nigel Pearson's side against Stoke City on September 13, though Powell will be inelgible to play against his parent club the following week.

The duo join fellow youngster Michael Keane in leaving the club on deadline day as the defender joined Burnley on loan until January.
