Berg's advice for Daehli

Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg is hoping Mats Daehli can make an impact at Under-21 level next season.

The teenager was voted the Reds' Young Player of the Year in 2012 and is looking to make the step up to Warren Joyce's side after scoring during his only appearance for the Reserves last term - in the Lancashire Senior Cup win against Oldham in May.

Berg, who was at Old Trafford recently for the Red Heart United Legends game, believes his fellow Norwegian needs to grasp his opportunities and learn from any disappointments suffered last season, when he was less of a central figure in the Under-18s after Christmas.

"It'll be good to see him," Berg told ManUtd.com. "It's been a bit more difficult than it was in 2011/2012 so hopefully, next season, he can make the step up.

"With young kids, it's not a straight line in terms of developing - there are ups and downs and it's part of being a footballer and being a kid. You have to accept it and be patient - work as hard as you can and take the chances when they come along.

"He's getting a great football education and, if he goes on to play in the first team, it will be fantastic. If not, he will have an opportunity to play professional football elsewhere and that is the great thing about the United footballing education. These kids develop into good players.

"Of course, not everybody is going to play for the first team but they will play elsewhere and the security for him is knowing he's getting the right training to be a top player so I think it's interesting to see how he develops."

The former Blackburn Rovers manager has taken time to watch the Under-21s in action and liked what he saw of Joyce's side, particularly at the tail-end of the successful campaign.

"I think the last two games, in particular, were excellent," continued Berg. "It was a great result against Liverpool, even though beating Tottenham in the final was also very, very good. They could have done a lot better in the first half against Spurs but they played how they can do in the second half. There are some very talented players in that team.

"The No10, Adnan Januzaj, stands out with his skills, eye for a pass and his twists and turns but there are a few more good players in that side. I think Jesse Lingard has got great potential. When he puts on a bit more weight and gets a bit stronger, he looks like a player who can do something.

"There are a lot of good talents and it's nice to see them winning and coming back from 2-0 down. There is something about the mentality of this club and it's good to see that it's also there with the younger players as well."

Daehli tipped for bright future

Ronny Johnsen admits he is looking forward to seeing how Mats Daehli develops at Manchester United.

The ex-Reds defender has followed his fellow Norwegian's progress carefully and feels the midfielder has an exciting future ahead of him.

Daehli is looking to make the step up from Academy football next season into Warren Joyce's Under-21 squad after scoring on his sole appearance for the Reserves last term.

"Mats is an amazing talent," declared Johnsen to ManUtd.com. "It's going to be fun to watch him develop.

"He is still very young but is a player that Norway needs to come through now. Hopefully, he is going to get there and it will go the right way for him as the future looks bright.

"Of course, he is in the right place and it's very nice for him. He's young but has a proper mentality for the game as well so he is going to somebody who is worth watching."

Di awal musim lalu sebenernya Daehli dah promosi ke reserve tapi entah kenapa lebih sering maen di U-18 dibanding U-21. Justru Januzaj yang musim sebelumnya "kalah" dari Daehli yang jadi pemaen U-18 terbaik yang justru gemilang di U-21 dan jadi jarang "downgrade" ke pertandingan U-18. Moga musim ini Daehli bisa lebih baik.

Posisi Daehli itu CM & LM kadang sebagai AM. Musim lalu posisi LM akrab punya Lingard & Lawrence sebagai back up dalam formasi 4-2-3-1. Posisi AM tau sendiri musim lalu punya siapa. Sedangkan posisi CM akrab dengan Tunnicliffe & Ekangamene, jadi maklum saja kalau kalah bersaing.
