Default Ritchie de Laet

30. Ritchie De Laet

Birthdate : 28 Nov 1988
Birthplace : Antwerp, Belgium
Position : Defender
Appearances : 2
Goals : 0
Joined United : 08 Jan 2009
United Debut : 24 May 2009 v Hull City (A)
International : Belgium

Belgium-born Ritchie De Laet signed for United in January 2009 after joining from Stoke City.

A centre-half by trade, he is also more than comfortable playing at left-back as he showed during an impressive first team debut for the Reds in the 1-0 win at Hull City on the final day of the 2008/09 season.

De Laet showed plenty of attacking intent down the left flank and also defended solidly, helping Sir Alex's men keep a deserved clean sheet.

Prior to his arrival at Old Trafford, the Belgian had spent 18 months with Stoke, but never actually made an

appearance for the Potters. After joining in January 2007 for an initial £100,000 fee from Royal Antwerp, De Laet spent a month on loan with Blue Square Premier side Wrexham in the autumn, but made just three appearances following a spate of injuries. When his time in Wales ended, he had a double hernia operation to treat a long-standing problem.

Before his surprise inclusion in United's first team for the trip to Hull, De Laet had made good progress with the Reserves and was part of the second string squad that won the Torneo Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi-Sassuolo in April 2009.

De Laet featured in three of United's five games in Italy and converted a penalty in the semi-final shoot-out win over FC Modena. The Reds later beat Ajax 1-0 in the final to secure the trophy.

A few days after his first team debut, De Laet was called up to the national squad for Belgium's Kirin Cup matches against Chile and Japan. He won his first cap in the 1-1 draw with Chile, and remains on the fringes of Sir Alex Ferguson's senior squad.

De Laet signs new Red Devils deal
teamtalk

Manchester United have handed a new contract to Ritchie de Laet, while Danny Welbeck is also reported to be on the verge of signing a new deal.

The 20-year-old defender only joined United in January, when the Red Devils signed him from Stoke.

He has impressed Sir Alex Ferguson since making the move to Old Trafford and is now on the verge of the first team.

And his progress has been rewarded with a new three-year deal.

"Alex Ferguson told me I'm very close to the first team," he told The Sun.

"There has been talk of me going out on loan but Sir Alex said I can't leave as he may need me. The new contract is a surprise and fantastic news."

United team-mate Welbeck is also said to be close to agreeing a new three-year contract at Old Trafford.

A Star in the Making’ – United’s Ritchie De Laet
-footballfancast.com-

When Man Utd signed Ritchie De Laet from Stoke City in January 2009 it of course raised eyebrows.

The young man from Belgium was a virtual unknown, joining Stoke City from United’s feeder club Royal Antwerp in August 2007 and after brief stints at Bournemouth and Wrexham in 2008, he became a United player.

He immediately went into the reserves as many scoffed at United signing a player that could not make it at the Britannia stadium, but after a slow start under reserve manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he flourished and in April was part of the reserve team that won the Torneo Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi Sassuolo ahead of teams like Juventus and Ajax.

On the final day of last season, De Laet was given his first team debut against relegation threatened Hull and he did not fail to impress as he put in an assured performance at left back, helping a young United team keep a clean sheet. His defensive display on the day was impressive but equally impressive was how he bombed forward up the wing to support attacks. It looked like United had yet again unearthed a gem.

After an inspiring performance against Valencia during pre season where again he showcased his ability to overlap and aid attacks, De Laet has continued to impress in the reserves and when the opportunity has arisen he has performed in the first team making appearances against Wolves and Barnsley in the Carling Cup.

De Laet can play all across the back line but excels in either full back position. Not afraid of the physical aspect of the game he is also a solid tackler. He has reasonable pace and at 6ft 1 has decent aerial ability. What particularly impressive in the Hull game was how certain he was in his play both defensively and offensively. The task of playing in the Premiership against relegation threatened Hull did not appear to daunt him.

People have questioned his positioning and the gaps he leaves in defence when he goes on one of his marauding forward runs but at just 20 years old these are thing that can be improved on especially as he has the likes of Gary Neville, John O’Shea, Patrice Evra and Wes Brown to learn from.

On October 6th, his performances were rewarded as United upgraded his performance based contract to a 3 year deal, but he cannot now get complacent, as De Laet will know that it takes hard work and talent to succeed at United.

He will also realise that he will have a hard time breaking into and cementing a spot in the first team with Patrice Evra and Fabio ahead of him at left back and John O’Shea, Wes Brown and Rafael all preferred choices at right back. But his attitude thus far has been great and if he can continue to work as hard as he has and take chances when they are presented to him he could find himself in the first team sooner than he thinks.

Sedikit neh dr game semalem,ga hanya Gibbo aj yg promising tapi DE Laet juga

Last night Gibson, Welbeck, De Laet and Co proved themselves more than capable. And if Ferguson cares to examine last week's newspapers closely he will find that precious few people actually suggested they were not in the first place.

De Laet overcomes nerves

Ritchie De Laet overcame any pre-match nerves to deliver a solid performance and help United navigate a potentially tricky Carling Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

De Laet started his first game of the season at left-back and played a key part in keeping Spurs’ experienced stars at bay as the Reds won 2-0 thanks to a double strike from Darron Gibson.

Belgian defender De Laet certainly felt the step up from the Reserves, but showed his gratitude to the more senior players for their support.

Speaking to MUTV, he said: “It was a lot quicker than playing in the Reserves on a Thursday night, but Nemanja, Wes and Ji helped me through and it was a good result in the end.

“It’s always nerve-wracking for a young player if you come into the dressing room knowing you are playing. You want to get onto the pitch as quickly as possible, but at the same time you don’t want to do anything wrong because it’s your big chance.

“You have to get through those first few minutes and then see what the game does for you.”

Ritchie had to adapt quickly and the prospect of keeping David Bentley quiet was daunting enough. Not only did he complete that task effectively, he saw off the threat of another of the top flight’s trickiest wingers, Aaron Lennon, when the diminutive wide man switched flanks in the second half.

“Bentley is a different type of player to Lennon, so you have to approach it differently. In the last 10 or 15 minutes Lennon came to my side and I had to think again because I had to change my approach. But as a professional footballer you have to learn to adapt to the game.”

Adapt he did, and Ritchie will hope he did enough to earn another chance to shine when the Reds find out the Carling Cup semi-final draw on Wednesday evening. And he feels the youngsters, with the support of one or two old heads, are capable of going all the way in the competition.

“We knew that if we won this game we’d get at least two more matches in the semis so it’s always good to progress,” he said. “It looks good if you get to the final, and then you have the chance to win it. The first-team lads always come and tell us we’re doing well, and we just need to do what we do in training. It gives you confidence.”

De Laet reserved a special final mention for fellow young gun and Reds’ match-winner Darron Gibson.

“He practises those shots every day in training,” he said. “Sometimes you get days where they go high or wide but they were two brilliant goals and his performance all round was excellent. He came to pick the ball from the defence and fed the forwards, which is what you want from a central midfielder.”

Ritchie to the rescue
-manutd.com-

Ritchie De Laet will be the latest player to answer Sir Alex Ferguson's centre-back SOS - if Nemanja Vidic fails to recover from a calf strain by Saturday.

The young Belgian impressed at right-back and later in the middle after Vidic was substituted in Tuesday's win over Wolves, and is now set to start in the centre against Fulham at Craven Cottage - with Wes Brown already ruled out by his boss.

"Wes has a hamstring strain and it's going to keep him out for a couple of weeks," Sir Alex confirmed on MUTV.

"Vidic suffered a calf strain tonight and that's a worrry for us ahead of Saturday. We just have to get on with it.

"Young De Laet has shown some promise and he did very well when he moved to centre-back. He is a natural centre-half and he'll probably be there on Saturday."

De Laet was making only his second league appearance for United, following his final-day debut at Hull City in May. He completed 90 minutes, in a back four that finished with Darren Fletcher at right-back, Michael Carrick in the centre and Patrice Evra on the left
