UNITED GOALKEEPER GRANT REVEALS HIS FUTURE PLANS

Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has revealed he is taking his coaching badges, with a view to becoming a manager in the future.

A 36-year-old lifelong Red, Grant believes he is in the right place to further his education, and he views Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as a great example of a goalkeeper who has become an accomplished head coach.

A passion for this side of the game has developed over time for the former Stoke City man, who recently sat down with us at the Aon Training Complex to discuss his long-term plans.

“Strangely, in the earlier part of my career, coaching was something I was always dead against,” he told us. “I could never see myself in that role whereas, as I got to 26 or 27, my views changed on that dramatically.

“I’m completely the opposite now. It’s something I’m really looking forward to getting into and, hopefully, management at some stage. I’d really love to be part of a coaching team and, as I say, eventually lead a team. That would be the ideal scenario for me.

“I think something changed when I went back to Derby for the second time. I was working with Steve McClaren and I just saw the way he worked. I actually saw, first hand how a change in manager can have such a dramatic impact on a football club, and on a team of players. It really opened my eyes to it. So getting an opportunity to do that in the future, I’m really looking forward to that moment.

“I’ve had some excellent role models. For me, though, you learn just as much from the ones you don’t necessarily agree with, the ones you don’t see eye-to-eye with, or the ones whose methods you don't like. You learn as much from those as you do from the ones you’ve really enjoyed working with, the ones you’ve studied and the ones you trust and believe in.

“So there is lots to learn and I am trying to pick up as much as I can. I feel like I’m in a wonderful position to do that at the football club I am at, at the moment.”

With such a focus on the art of specialist goalkeeping coaching, not all performers between the posts end up pursuing the top job as a career plan.

“It is strange that you don’t see a huge amount of goalkeepers making it into top-level management,” added Grant. “Yes, Jose Mourinho played in goal and Mike Walker the old Norwich manager. The Wolves manager Nuno – he was a goalkeeper. Kevin Blackwell. There have been a few. But, obviously, the Wolves boss, Nuno, is probably a shining example of it in this day and age. A goalkeeper turned head coach. So, obviously, that’s a path I wouldn’t mind following.

“Us goalkeepers are bit more difficult as, to be a goalkeeper coach, you have to have your goalkeeping badges as well. For me, it’s something I would want to do naturally anyway, coaching and management, and I mean the whole team, as it’s something I’ve really had my eye on.”

GRANT DELIGHTED TO EXTEND UNITED STAY

Lee Grant has expressed his satisfaction at extending his contract with Manchester United until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The keeper has committed for another year at Old Trafford and is determined to return from an arm injury before the end of the current campaign.

By getting the deal done early, it enables the hard work to continue behind the scenes in the goalkeeping department, with no distractions.

“I love being here and clearly somebody likes me being here also, so it's good to have it sorted,” he told us. “I'm just looking forward to being part of next year and part of watching the football club grow and move forward, which for me, has been happening clearly over the last 18 months anyway. But seeing those seeds that have been planted and getting the chance to hopefully see the fruits of that next year will be nice.

“Obviously, I'm very much used to it now because I'm at the tail-end of my career and it's kind of normal to be in those situations [having a contract run down]. It happens in every footballer's life, it's part of it, coming to the end of contracts and time at a football club and not not knowing where you find yourself. So, sometimes, the instability can be unsettling. Fortunately for me, it's another year sorted and it gives me the opportunity to plan ahead and get cracking.

“Of course, I'm not after any sympathy, I don't think anyone else does, but it does throw up challenges when you've got family and living situations to sort out, so I'm delighted to be able to really focus on my work.”

Grant is continuing his coaching work as he aims to recover from injury in order to get back playing before 2019/20 is out.

“I try to speak to the coaching staff as much as possible for my own learning as much as anything,” he added. “I get to see a lot of the hard work behind the scenes and all of us players are very much in touch with the amount of work that goes into what is given to us.

“We're under no illusions about how much work is going in currently and the planning for next season, going forward already. I'm really pleased to be part of that continued hard work and am looking forward to seeing the results of that in the coming months and years.

“I'm still working hard at the coaching and putting the final touches to my 'A' licence now. It's a good thing being at such a fantastic club that is giving me an opportunity to do that as well, by working with some of the younger players, is something I very much appreciate. I will look to continue that next year as well.

“I've really prided myself throughout my career of being fit and available at all times because that's important for all players to do that as much as possible,“ he said about his current injury.

“But I've fallen foul of a little bit of bad luck and a small injury ended up being worse than I thought. It's left me with a couple of months for a period of rehab, which is frustrating, but it has to be done.

“It was one of those where you know something is not quite right. I tried to get on with it but, as soon as they had a look inside, it was clear something needed addressing. It's done and it all went well, better than expected.

“That's great so it's just a period of rehab which will hopefully leave me in a good place going into the back-end of the season.”

Default Re: Lee Anderson Grant

WHY THE GOALKEEPERS UNION IS A BIG PLUS FOR UNITED

Manchester United must have a claim to possessing the strongest goalkeeping department in the world and Lee Grant believes this is of huge benefit to the club and each individual involved.

Grant came off the bench in Saturday's pre-season friendly at Aston Villa to replace Dean Henderson, who is back from two successful seasons at Sheffield United and earned post-match praise from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

David De Gea is fresh from some excellent work for Spain in the UEFA Nations League, while ultra-reliable Sergio Romero has long been considered one of the best no.2 keepers in the business. January signing Nathan Bishop is also part of the group and the youngster made his first appearance for the Reds last week, keeping a clean sheet in the 6-0 win at Salford City in the EFL Trophy.

Grant believes the intense competition for places will create a healthy environment and is reflective of the desire to have strength in depth in all areas of the pitch.

“There were lots and lots of positives,” Grant told us after the match at Villa Park. “I don't think anyone will be taking too much notice of the scoreline.

“The most important thing the gaffer stressed before the game was it's a continuation of the work we've been doing in training, especially from the physical aspect, getting valuable minutes into the tank for quite a few players.

“I thought Dean did fantastically well. It's been great to have him back in among us. David has come back from international duty as sharp as ever. I've kept a clean sheet today so I've made the gaffer's job even more difficult for next week!

“It's been great, there's a really good atmosphere within the group and the goalkeeping department is no different to any other department. We're all pulling in the right direction and striving to be fit and ready, and looking forward to next weekend [the opener against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford].

“I imagine, for Dean, it [the loan] has given him huge confidence in himself, and that self-belief is all important, especially at a young age. The next test is obviously in front of him now and he's committed his future to the football club, which is wonderful news. It's great for the department - myself, Dean, Sergio, David, Nathan. It's a long list!

“We all want to play and all want to do well for this club and that can only enhance the atmosphere in the group.”

The 37-year-old was asked by MUTV's Stewart Gardner if it is a nice situation for the manager to have, when choosing who wears the gloves.

“I think so,” he replied. “He's got good characters and good individuals here. That's important and all four or five of understand what it takes. We all want to support each other but, most importantly, we all have the determination to be better than the next one. That's crucial and will stand us in really good stead over the course of the season.

“There are lots and lots of games to play and it's all hands on deck. The goal for this football club is playing 60+ matches a season continuously, and we've shown that we can do that. We're beginning to develop a robustness about us and, certainly, the group is getting stronger and stronger. The goalkeeping department reflects the rest of the group, in that respect.

“Over the course of the season, there are going to be plenty of opportunities for players to stake their claim.”

LEE GRANT PENS ONE-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION

Manchester United is pleased to announce that goalkeeper Lee Grant has signed a one-year contract extension, which keeps him at the club until 2022.

The 38-year-old initially joined from Stoke City in the summer of 2018 on a two-year deal.

In March 2020, he penned a new deal that lengthened his stay at the club until at least the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Now Grant has further extended his spell at United, putting pen to paper on a one-year deal that keeps him at Old Trafford until the completion of 2021/22.

“I was always very, very hopeful that I could extend my stay for another year and thankfully the club have allowed me to do that,” says Lee.“I'm really looking forward to the challenge of supporting the team, keeping myself going, as well as motivating others around me for another year.

“I think feeling valued and enjoying your role is huge, no matter what line of work you're in, and I'm obviously fortunate that I've got the opportunity to do that at such a wonderful club. I'm really looking forward to another year with the lads.

“Whoever has the gloves, it's up to the other guys to really push to make sure that, as a team, we're able to get the best possible results. Whether it's David, Dean or myself, we'll all be pushing to play and excited and ready to support the one that is playing.”

GRANT'S CAREER SO FAR

Born in Hemel Hempstead in January 1983, Grant started his career as a youth-team goalkeeper at nearby Watford before joining Derby County, with whom he made his senior debut in the 2002/03 season.

Capped by England in various age groups up to Under-21 level, his club career continued with a switch to Sheffield Wednesday in July 2007, after loan spells at Burnley and Oldham Athletic.

Other permanent moves – to Burnley in 2010 and then back to Derby County in 2013 – preceded his spell in the Premier League with Stoke City. He initially joined the Potters on loan as cover for the injured Jack Butland, and produced a man-of-the-match performance at Old Trafford in October 2016, as his side held United 1-1.

In the next meeting, Grant prevented the Reds from scoring until the 93rd minute, when Wayne Rooney made club history by scoring his record 250th goal.

After joining in July 2018, Grant made his United debut in a League Cup tie with his old club Derby County, coming on as a substitute after Sergio Romero had received a red card.

He appeared again in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, as one of the experienced faces in a youthful Reds side that took on FC Astana.

GRANT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL

Everyone at Manchester United would like to wish goalkeeper Lee Grant the best of luck for the future, as he announces his retirement from professional football.

The 39-year-old joined the Reds in 2018 having previously played for Derby County, Burnley, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City, tallying up over 500 appearances career appearances.

During his time at Old Trafford, Grant featured twice in competitive games for United, with his debut coming against former side Derby in the 2018/19 League Cup third round at Old Trafford.

In the following season, he became the club’s most senior European debutant of all time, at the age of 36 years and 305 days, when he was named in the starting XI for a Europa League group-stage game away to Astana.

Having been an experienced and valued presence in the United dressing room over the last four seasons, Lee has now taken the decision to hang up his gloves and look ahead to a new chapter in his career elsewhere, which he has previously expressed as a desire to be in coaching.

He said: “After 511 appearances, I’ve decided it’s the right time to move into the next stage of my career.

“There have been so many fun moments mixed in with the odd challenge, but I’m grateful for each and every one.

“Fulfilling a boyhood dream of playing for Manchester United was something I thought was out of reach, so to have achieved that fills me with great pride and emotion!

“Although I haven’t played as many games in the last four years, I’ve given everything to the group every single day on the training pitch and in the dressing room. The opportunity to join the biggest club in the world was one I could never turn down and I’m so grateful for the lessons learned and the friends I’ve gained.

“The opportunity to challenge, set standards and ultimately learn from some truly exceptional players and staff has been so valuable.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate to play for some amazing clubs, Derby County, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley, Stoke City and now to finish at the pinnacle – Manchester United. I’m thankful to each and every club for what they have given to me, each one has shaped me into who I am. The relationship with the supporters of these great clubs will always be one of my most treasured memories.

“There are too many incredible football people to thank as I’ve received untold amounts of help from so many special people over the last 23 years. I do however want to say a huge thank you to my family and in particular my wife, Helen, for moving around the country with me, allowing me to pursue my dream. Football has given me so much, but it can also be tough on partners and children. Without them it would never have been possible to achieve what I did.

“As I move into the next stage of my career, I’m excited and hungry about the beginning of a new journey and the hard work that lies ahead!”

The Old Trafford exodus begins! Veteran Man United keeper Lee Grant announces his retirement at the age of 39 after just two games for the club and could be the first of 10 players to go as Erik ten Hag overhaul begins

* 39-year-old Manchester United keeper Lee Grant has retired from playing
* He made two appearances for the club during four season at Old Trafford
* Grant made over 500 appearances in league football for various clubs
* He is likely to be the first of many players to depart United over the summer

Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39 as the club's summer exodus begins.

Grant, who'd previously played over 500 games for Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley, Stoke and others, signed for United as goalkeeping cover in 2018.

He made just two appearances for the Old Trafford club - his debut came against Derby in the EFL Cup in September 2018, a substitute for Juan Mata after keeper Sergio Romero was sent off.

Grant made his second appearance away to Kazakh club Astana in the group stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League.

Two one-year contract extensions kept Grant at Old Trafford a little longer but he has now decided to hang up his gloves and could make the transition to coaching.

He said: 'After 511 appearances, I've decided it's the right time to move into the next stage of my career.

'There have been so many fun moments mixed in with the odd challenge, but I'm grateful for each and every one.

'Fulfilling a boyhood dream of playing for Manchester United was something I thought was out of reach, so to have achieved that fills me with great pride and emotion!

'Although I haven't played as many games in the last four years, I've given everything to the group every single day on the training pitch and in the dressing room.

'As I move into the next stage of my career, I'm excited and hungry about the beginning of a new journey and the hard work that lies ahead!'

Grant is likely to be the first of a number of players to depart United as Erik ten Hag comes in as the club's new manager.

A hugely disappointing 2021-22 season saw United finish only sixth in the Premier League and fail both in the domestic cups and the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as manager back in November with Ralf Rangnick unable to lift the team as interim boss.

Ten Hag has vowed to restore United to a trophy-challenging force capable of taking on rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the years ahead.

He will have to rebuild the squad first, however, with a number of players expected to depart this summer.

Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Grant were all out of contract, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Alex Telles and Dean Henderson could move away.

Lee Grant joins Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna's coaching staff just hours after the former Manchester United goalkeeper ended his playing career

* Lee Grant played twice for Manchester United in four seasons with the club
* He joins Ipswich as first team coach after completing his coaching licenses
* The-39-year-old was coached by Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna at United
* Grant described his new role as a 'fantastic opportunity' at an 'exciting' club

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has joined Ipswich Town as first team coach after ending his playing career.

The 39-year-old will be working with his former United coach Kieran McKenna, who left the club to manage The Tractor Boys in December 2021. McKenna's assistant Martyn Pert also spent time coaching United.

Speaking to itfc.co.uk, Grant said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I am really looking forward to it.

'I know Kieran and Martyn having worked with them at Manchester United and I loved the work we were being given from a playing perspective. Now I am excited about working with them again, albeit in a different role.'

Journeyman Keeper Grant signed for United in 2018. He was already well-known at Old Trafford after a memorable man-of-the-match display at the ground for Stoke two seasons earlier.

He made just two appearances for United in four seasons as he sat behind David De Gea and Dean Henderson in the goalkeeping pecking order.

Grant continued: 'I feel really blessed that I have been able to make the decision to retire and go straight into an exciting role with Ipswich Town.

Lee Grant spent four years at Manchester United but only appeared twice for the club. Kieran McKenna left his role as first team coach at Man United so he could manage Ipswich

'Over the last few years, I have been preparing for this moment by obtaining my coaching licences, expanding my network and working on a business degree. It has all been with the intention of being in a good place for a smooth transition at this point in my career.

'I could not be joining a club with a more exciting footing than Ipswich either. There is new ownership, new direction, a driven manager and a squad that is also hungry to go and achieve things.

'As I say, I am excited to get to work and I will be ready for when the squad returns ahead of the new season.'

Ipswich boss McKenna added: 'I have worked closely with Lee, and he has been transitioning ready to make the move into a coaching role as soon as he called time on his playing career.

'He has been a fantastic professional and he is someone that has great knowledge of the game. He has always been a respected member of every dressing room he has been in.

'He will bring a wealth of quality to his role, and, given he had a number of opportunities for his next step in the game, it's a great sign for the Club that he has made that commitment to us.

Ipswich will be hoping Grant's coaching can help them improve on this season's 11th place finish in League One.
