The top scorer in Manchester derbies is Wayne Rooney, who bagged his 11th in last season's 4-1 away defeat. Joe Hayes and Francis Lee both have 10 for City


United & City have faced each other 167 times in all competitions, with the first meeting coming in 1891. Utd have 69 wins to City's 48, with 50 draws.


All in all, 24 players have played for both clubs, including Carlos Tevez, Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole. The latest to do so is Owen Hargreaves.

Predictably, the emotional scenes sparked a pitch invasion from United fans, with police having to step in. Law never played professional football again.

6/12/92 - United 2 City 1: The first-ever Premier League derby is crowned by Mark Hughes, who celebrates his late winner as United go on to win the title.

9/11/02 - City 3 United 1: City claimed their first derby win in over a decade. Shaun Goater was the star, destroying United - Gary Neville in particular.


Moreover, Goater's brace saw him score his 100th City goal in what was to be the final derby at Maine Road.


14/3/04 - City 4 United 1: A week after their bitter rivals KO'd them from the FA Cup 5th rnd, Fowler, Macken, Sinclair and SWP inspired a league thrashing


13/2/05 - City 0 United 2: Rooney and Ronaldo made their first mark (of many) on a Manchester derby in a comfortable victory for the visitors.

The derby isn't all about rivalry. On Feb 10, 2008, the two sides came together in remembrance of the Munich Air Disaster 50 years prior.

Manchester United reveal programme cover for derby clash with City after fan competition

* Programme cover was designed by Manchester United fan Harri Lyons
* More than 20,000 fans voted in the poll in which the half red, half sky blue design came out on top
* Manchester United play Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday

Manchester United fans have voted for the design for the front of the programme for Sunday’s derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

United ran a competition on their website asking fans to send in their designs for the United Review.

More than 450 designs were sent in from all over the world before entries were shortlisted to a final two. That pair went to a 24-hour poll conducted on Twitter, where Harri Lyons' effort was voted the winner ahead of fellow United fan Nori Suminar.

The winning design shows Old Trafford with the city of Manchester behind it and the background split between red and sky blue.

The left side of the design features a devil’s fork while there is a blue moon on the right.

United say they received over 20,000 votes in the 24-hour period and Harri’s design won with 55 per cent of the vote.

As well as seeing his design on the front of Sunday’s United Review, he will receive a high-quality version of his artwork, signed by manager Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United won the corresponding fixture last season 4-2 thanks to goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling.

City go into the game two points ahead of their local rivals and a win for Van Gaal’s side would see them leapfrog Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

HOMEGROWN DERBY GOALSCORERS
Marcus Rashford followed in some famous footsteps when scoring for Manchester United in the derby against City.

Five other homegrown Reds have achieved the feat in the Barclays Premier League, starting with Mark Hughes towards the end of 1992 during the inaugural season of the new division.

After Sparky repeated the trick a couple of years later, Ryan Giggs added to his derby winner in the old Division One by netting a belter at Maine Road.

Paul Scholes has five league derby goals to his name - including his first in 1995 and the famous late headed winner in 2010 - while David Beckham converted a beautiful free-kick against the Blues in 2000.

Peter Schmeichel has stoked the flames ahead of this weekend's Manchester derby by insisting United are the 'no doubt' the biggest club in the world.

The Old Trafford legend, who later played for Manchester City and saw his son Kasper come through the ranks at the Etihad, has declared the red half of Manchester still holds the edge in the city when it comes to international gravitas.

This weekend's Manchester derby at Old Trafford sees both sides put their 100 per cent records on the line and despite Schmeichel's insistence over United's world status he accepts City have been ahead in footballing terms in recent seasons.


Schmeichel also said that Manchester City have been ahead of United in football terms of late

Schmeichel has been impressed with Jose Mourinho's bid to return United to the top of the tree. Without saying so explicitly there can be little doubt who he is backing this weekend.

'There's no doubt, nobody can argue that Manchester United is not the biggest club in the world. It is,' he told Omnisport.

'It's the club with the most fans, supporters and there are numbers out there which are official numbers so you can't argue that.

'But is it the best club in the world? It hasn't been for three years, it hasn't been even anywhere near the best club in England. Manchester City have been there or thereabouts.

'When you look at the last three years it has been very, very poor. Seventh, fourth and fifth – that's not Manchester United. But Manchester City has been there or thereabouts so you can argue that they are the bigger club in Manchester at the moment in terms of results.

'But in terms of popularity they've got no chance of being anywhere near the biggest in the world.'
