Manchester United dismiss suggestions of 'financial crisis' over Adem Ljajic move
Manchester United have dismissed suggestions they might be in 'financial crisis' after abandoning a £10 million option to complete the signing of Partizan Belgrade teenager Adem Ljajic.

Ljajic, 18, had been due to arrive at Old Trafford next month with United securing an option to buy the attacking midfielder when they completed the £7 million signing of Zoran Tosic, also from Partizan, in January.

Despite making moves to secure a work permit for the Serbian youngster in October, United have stunned Partizan by walking away from the deal due to misgivings at Old Trafford over the player's progress and development since agreeing the option to buy for £10 million.

A United spokesman said: "We had an option to buy the player but, having closely monitored his development over the past 12 months, and taken into consideration the young players emerging through the ranks at the club, we have chosen not to pursue the transfer."

United were unable to bring Ljajic to England last season due to his age, but with the player celebrating his 18th birthday in September, it had been expected that he would complete a move to Old Trafford in January upon the granting of a work permit.

But with United chief executive David Gill informing Partizan this week that they no longer wish to pursue the option to buy Ljajic, the Serbian club have claimed that the collapse of the deal is due to United's difficulties in servicing their £700 million debt.

Partizan president Dragan Djuric said: "Maybe the real problem is that they are in financial crisis."

United have dismissed the Partizan claims, with senior Old Trafford officials suspecting that the Belgrade club are attempting to protect the player's sale value.

The £10 million fee for Ljajic had already been budgeted for during this financial year by United and the decision to withdraw their interest is understood to be based solely on the player's unconvincing progress.

Ferguson spoke earlier this season of his excitement at the prospect of Ljajic, nicknamed 'Little Kaka,' linking up with the club's first-team squad in the new year.

With fellow Serb Tosic struggling to make an impact since his arrival from Belgrade in January, it had even been suggested that Ljajic would prove to be the key acquisition in the deal.

But having scouted the player intensively since the turn of the year, and having also monitored him at close hand during visits to the club's Carrington training ground, Ferguson and his coaches have formed the opinion that Ljajic is no better than the young players currently at Old Trafford.

Mame Biram Diouf, the Senegalese forward signed in a £2 million deal from Norwegian club Molde in July, is now training with United after completing a six-month loan back at Molde. Ferguson is set to make a decision over whether to apply for a work permit for the 21-year-old, or wait until the end of the season, after monitoring him at Carrington in the coming days.

Federico Macheda, the 18-year-old Italian forward, has signed a contract that will tie him to United until 2014.

Adem Ljajić – Deal off?
Posted by nickogs20 on December 3, 2009

Seemingly out of the blue, reports in the English media this evening have surfaced stating that United’s signing of Serbian teenager Adem Ljajić from Partizan Belgrade – thought to have been a done deal since January – has been cancelled.

We’ll attempt to put over the ‘facts’ as they stand:

- The signing of Ljajić was announced back in January at the same time as that of Zoran Tošić, with the official site confirming the deal and displaying pictures of the Serbian duo being ‘paraded’ at Old Trafford alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and a United shirt. Ljajić has always been spoken about as a United player and has himself stated his pride at being a United player.

- Today, the English media are saying the deal is off, with the Daily Telegraph most notably quoting ‘a United spokesman’ as saying “We had an option to buy the player but, having closely monitored his development over the past 12 months, and taken into consideration the young players emerging through the ranks at the club, we have chosen not to pursue the transfer”. This statement was seemingly in response to a comment from Partizan president Dragan Djuric which hinted at the plug having been pulled due to a ‘financial crisis’ at United.

- The Serbian media are saying that the reports in the English media of the deal being off are false. They carry quotes from Ljajić’s agent saying the deal’s still on as far as he’s concerned (barring the acquisition of a work permit), and more extensive quotes from Djuric saying they have heard nothing from United about calling the deal off. Djuric’s comment about a ‘financial crisis’ seem to refer to the rumours about the deal being called off, not any official communication with MUFC.

Many things about this developing story don’t quite add up. The quotes from a United spokesman in the Telegraph would suggest the deal is indeed off, and yet those quotes aren’t reproduced on the club’s official website or any other media outlet, nor is the spokesman identified. It would seem unlikely that United would unilaterally decree that the deal is off, so the statements of Partizan’s president and Ljajić’s agent that the deal is still on to their knowledge tend to suggest that if there are question marks over the transfer, they aren’t unresolvable ones as far as the Belgrade club are concerned.

Further to that, the apparent statement from the United spokesman that the deal is essentially off because the club have come to the conclusion over the last twelve months that Ljajić isn’t the player they thought he was or would be seems very strange in the light of the following comments from Sir Alex less than a month ago, at a time when he confirmed the club were applying for a work permit for the 18 year-old:

“Given all the talk about him and the fact he plays for Serbia’s Under 21s even though he’s only 18, we hope we will be granted the permit. I am looking forward to seeing him in January.”

Bearing in mind those comments were made about three weeks ago, would the manager say that, and apply for a work permit, if he had decided the player wasn’t up to scratch? Is it likely that he’s changed his mind about the player in those three weeks, a period in which the player continued to perform well for Partizan, as he has all season? I wouldn’t dream of second-guessing the manager, but both scenarios seem extremely unlikely.

That would lead me to two possible conclusions – either the media reports in this country are false and the deal is still on (or perhaps there are minor problems with it that need ironing out), or the president of Partizan was correct in implicating that the transfer had been shelved due to financial concerns brought about by the sizeable debt that United are currently struggling to service. Hopefully that first conclusion will come to pass, and with regard to that, we can only hope United clarify matters as soon as possible. If the deal is indeed off, while this isn’t really the place to go into detail on issues surrounding the club’s financial status, you can be sure that conclusion two will be explored in-depth elsewhere.

We’ll endeavour to update the story tomorrow as things develop, hopefully with some concrete information either way. Keep an eye on our twitter feed (@manunitedyouth, or check the top of the right sidebar), we’ll try to pass along any dribs and drabs of info that may emerge.

Maksih infonya... semoga Ljajic bisa gabung dan MU nggak krisis keuangan. Amin...

Jangan sampe karena alasan krisis MU batal ngerekrut Ljajic. klo dengan alasan kualiatas dan prospek Ljajic ternyata dinilai biasa2 aja sih boleh2 aja (meski aku juga nggak tau sebagus apa Ljajic), tapi klo karena alasan finansial dan Ljajic malah direkrut klub laen (apalagi city) sayang banget.

Kenapa nggak uang hasil penjualan Nani buat mbayar Ljajic,he...

Manchester United kill Adem Ljajic deal to free up transfer funds for Wolfsburg striker
-mirrorfootball.co.uk-

Manchester United have pulled the plug on their deal to sign Serbia's Adem Ljajic in January's transfer window.

United had agreed a combined £17million deal with Partizan Belgrade for 18-year-old attacking midfielder Ljajic and Zoran Tosic, who came to Old Trafford in the summer.

But Tosic has flopped at United and will be allowed to leave next month, while Sir Alex Ferguson decided Ljajic was not worth such a huge fee and killed the deal.

With Antonio Valencia impressing on the right for United and Gabriel Obertan able to operate on both flanks, Fergie decided he did not need more cover in the same position.

The money saved from the potential deal will free up funds for Fergie to buy a striker to complement Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.

Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko, rated recently by Fergie as the most in-form striker in Europe, is top of Fergie's wanted list.

United rubbish cash crisis claims after Ljajic deal fails
-belfasttelegraph.co.uk-

Manchester United have pulled out of their proposed £10m move to sign the young Partizan Belgrade playmaker Adem Ljajic, prompting claims from the selling club's president that financial problems may lie behind the decision.

The Partizan president, Dragan Djuric, said in the Serbian media yesterday that the failure to seal the deal under which 18-year-old Ljajic was to follow former team-mate Zoran Tosic to Old Trafford reflected the fact that “maybe the real problem is that Manchester United is in financial crisis.”

United quickly and robustly dismissed that suggestion, insisting that they had not taken up the option to buy the player which they had announced when Tosic arrived last January, because they have spent 12 months monitoring the player and remain unconvinced that he will flourish at Old Trafford.

United have always rejected suggestions that the decision to bank, rather than spend, most of the £80m revenue for Cristiano Ronaldo was to do with the club's £700m debt.

United also said that they had better young players emerging through their own ranks than Ljajic, which suggests they are relying on the 20-year-old French winger Gabriel Obertan to be the face of the future with Antonio Valencia on the flanks.

The failure of Nani to step up since the departure of Ronaldo has certainly left work to do in that department.

There had been a feeling in Belgrade for several days that the Ljajic deal might be falling away as United stalled on securing the necessary work permit. The player's agent Mladen Furtula said on Tuesday that he was “confident that everything will be OK and that from January Ljajic be officially Manchester United's.”

Ljajic has been undergoing a separate training programme from the rest of the Partizan players, in readiness for the rigours of the Premier League.

The decision not to take up the option to buy will come as a blow to supporters, since Ljajic was always considered the more promising of the two Belgrade wingers who were to be joining the club in a joint £16.3m deal.

Tosic has sunk without trace. Though the United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, suggested last January that Tosic might be a part of things by the end of the season, the player has proved too slight to make an impact and his contributions have been limited to five League Cup games, the most recent an eight-minute appearance in the 2-0 win over Tottenham on Tuesday night.

The question of how the club might now recoup some of their £7m investment in Tosic is difficult, given that no Serbian club is likely to be able to afford that sum.
