OT 100 #20: Munich mourned

Old Trafford was the setting for an afternoon of grieving as Nottingham Forest's First Division visit was preceded by a memorial service for those who had perished in Munich...

The Background:
The time had come to officially pay collective respect to those who had perished in Munich, but the day before the club and its supporters geared up to say their farewells, the death toll rose from 22 to 23. Duncan Edwards' incredible powers of survival waned in the early hours of Friday, 21 February, lending a fresh air of loss to proceedings when Forest arrived in M16.

The Occasion: As Edwards' body was being flown from Munich to London, the Dean of Manchester led a short, interdenominational service at Old Trafford for each victim. Thousands of supporters were locked outside, while a gate of 66,124 witnessed the ceremony and the game itself, which started with United - on paper - firmly in the hunt for a third successive league title. Jimmy Murphy fielded exactly the same side which had so heroically overcome Sheffield Wednesday three days earlier, and their character was again thrust under the microscope when Forest took the lead through left winger Stewart Imlach. The patched-up Reds redoubled their efforts, however, and drew level 15 minutes from time through Alex Dawson.

The Aftermath: United won just one of a further 13 league games - a 2-1 victory at Sunderland - and slumped to a ninth-place finish. Wolves took the title, but the Reds' aim was one of rebuilding rather than chasing immediate success. Matt Busby asserted that he would need five years to get United re-established as a footballing power.

OT 100 #21: Italians upset

An emotional, draining 1957/58 campaign boiled down to two games; home and away European Cup semi-final ties with Italian giants AC Milan. First up, the Serie A champions came to Old Trafford on 8 May 1958...

What The Papers Said
United Show Their Teeth

"I have never seen a crowd set alight with the flame of victory as this Old Trafford when little Ernie Taylor's penalty rocketed into the net off the underside of the crossbar. They threatened to uproot the whole structure, rising as one man to greet the victory goal."
Terrence Elliott, Daily Express

The Background: Prior to the Munich disaster, the Busby Babes' final act was to book a European Cup semi-final clash with the mighty Milanese. Although the Reds had reached the FA Cup Final against all odds, a run of just one win in 13 league games didn't bode well for any hope of overcoming Italy's finest. However, Jimmy Murphy's jaded squad had upheld the club's honour after Munich and, although England's decision to take Bobby Charlton on a pre-World Cup tour hardly helped the Reds' chances, they steeled themselves for one more push.

The Occasion: A strong, skilful Milan side dominated the early exchanges, and took the lead on 24 minutes when Uruguayan striker Juan Alberto Schiaffino sent an unerring finish past exposed home goalkeeper Harry Gregg. In response, United adopted an extremely physical approach throughout the remainder of the first half, with The Daily Express' Terence Elliott admitting: "Some of United's first half tackling made me wonder how these Milan boys could take it without retaliation."The Reds' footballing mantra gradually took over, but two mistakes from visiting centre-back Cesare Maldini - future Italian international manager and father of Milan legend Paolo - gave United a shortcut to victory. First, Dennis Viollet pounced on the defender's underhit backpass to level, then Maldini shoulder-barged the Reds' goalscorer inside the area to concede a penalty. Milan's collective incandescence suggested a soft award, but Ernie Taylor cared not a jot as he rammed in the kick, via the underside of the crossbar.

The Aftermath: United were roundly thrashed in the second leg at the San Siro, six days later. The Italians were level on aggregate within two minutes of kick-off, and ultimately strode to a 4-0 win on the night and advanced to the final, where they were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid. "We had run out of emotional steam," said Bill Foulkes. "We had put everything into our FA Cup ties to win through to Wembley. By the time the European Cup semi-final had come around, a lot of us were pretty well drained."

OT 100 #22: Enter Lawman

United began the 1962/63 season with a brand new goal-getter in attack; Scottish international Denis Law. The Lawman went on to establish himself as a club legend, and his Old Trafford tale began with an impressive debut...

Name: Denis Law
Born: 24/02/1940, Aberdeen
Position: Centre forward
Debut: v West Brom, 18/08/1962
Appearances: 404
Goals: 237

The Background: As the post-Munich rebuilding continued, Matt Busby enlisted Scottish striker Denis Law to furnish his side with goals. Busby had failed to lure a teenage Law from Huddersfield Town, but finally got his man after spells with Manchester City and Torino, for a British record fee of £115,000. "It was a strange feeling turning right to Old Trafford instead of left to Maine Road in my car, but it felt good," said Law, who made his United debut six weeks after signing, against West Brom on 18 August, 1962.

The Occasion: David Herd put United ahead within moments of the first whistle, and Law only had to wait until the seventh minute to get a dream debut goal, glancing Johnny Giles' inch-perfect cross inside the far post. However, despite an eye-catching display from the razor-sharp Law, United's blistering start slowly fizzled out, and the Baggies struck twice after the interval to secure a 2-2 draw.

The Aftermath: United's inconsistencies were not conducive to a successful league campaign, and the Reds finished three points above the relegation zone - despite a league haul of 23 goals in 38 games from Law. However, United's unpredictability also spawned a successful FA Cup campaign in which Law scored six in six, including one in a 3-1 win over Leicester City in the final.

OT 100 #23: Best's bow

Matt Busby's faith in the promotion of young talent was once again demonstrated on 19 September, 1963, when a spindly 17-year-old named George Best was thrust into his first senior start...

"When you're the new kid in the team playing with a man of Bobby Charlton's stature, you're supposed to give the ball occasionally. But once I got it, I didn't want to give it to anybody."
- George Best

The Background: It took all of Busby's efforts to pursuade the quiet Belfast boy that life in Manchester was for him but, once he settled at the club, Best made an eye-catching impact in the Reds' youth ranks. Two years after moving over to England, Best had impressed sufficiently to secure a professional contract and, early in the 1963/64 season, a first sniff of senior action against West Brom.

The Occasion: Before the game, Best sat quietly in the corner of the United dressing room, calmly thumbing through a copy of United Review; a virtual unknown to the 50,453 supporters in the stands. From the first whistle, however, the teenager's talents quickly became apparent as he skipped by visiting players with ease, even nutmegging his marker, experienced Welsh international Graham Williams. Although David Sadler scored the only goal of the game, the terraces hummed throughout the match with talk of the new boy.

The Aftermath: United finished the 1963/64 season in second spot, with Best making an impressive 26 appearances in all competitions. He became a first team regular the following season, forming what would be dubbed 'The Holy Trinity' alongside Bobby Charlton and Denis Law; a triumvirate now immortalised in a statue on Sir Matt Busby Way. Best went on to make 470 United appearances, scoring 179 goals and establishing himself as arguably the most gifted player in the club's history.

OT 100 #24: Full English

Old Trafford's first ever all-English European tie came in December 1963, when United hosted Spurs in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round, second leg...

ECWC Second round, first leg
3 December, 1963 White Hart Lane

Tottenham 2 (Mackay, Dyson)
United 0

Attendance: 57,447

ECWC Second round, second leg
10 December, 1963, Old Trafford

United 4 (Herd 2, Charlton 2)
Tottenham 1 (Greaves)

Attendance: 48,369

United win 4-3 on aggregate

The Background: Reigning Cup Winners' Cup holders Spurs were frustrated by FA Cup winners United for long periods in the first leg at White Hart Lane, but bagged two goals in the final 20 minutes to establish a 2-0 lead. United's chances of going through were hardly helped by the suspension of striker Denis Law, who had scored 20 goals in as many games in the first four months of the season.

The Occasion: Tottenham were devastated by the early loss of winger Dave Mackay, who suffered a double fracture of his left leg after a 50-50 challenge with Noel Cantwell. In the days before substitutes, Spurs were forced to battle on for 82 minutes with 10 men. By that point, United were already ahead through David Herd's diving header. The striker bagged his second just after half-time, nudging Maurice Setters' goalbound header over the line to level the aggregate score, only for Spurs to quickly hit back through Jimmy Greaves. United were briefly reduced to 10 men while Setters received six stitches in a head wound, but Bobby Charlton popped up late on, rocketing home Pat Crerand passes after 77 and 87 minutes, to send the Reds into the last eight.

The Aftermath: United were paired with Portugal's Sporting Lisbon in the last eight, and looked set for a spot in the semi-finals when Denis Law's hat-trick contributed heavily to a 4-1 first leg win at Old Trafford. Alas, the Reds were torn apart in the second leg; succumbing to early goal rushes in each half as Sporting ran out comfortable 5-0 winners on the night, and 6-4 overall.

OT 100 #25: Goal machine

Denis Law's goalscoring exploits of the 1963/64 campaign had already set a club record, and he went into the final day of the season with 44 goals in all competitions...

Denis Law's Record: 1963/64

League: 30 appearances, 30 goals
FA Cup: 6 appearances, 10 goals
ECWC: 5 appearances, 6 goals
C Shield: 1 appearance, 0 goals

Total: 42 appearances, 46 goals

The Background: The Lawman had set United's forward line alight with 29 goals in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, but his ruthlessness was even icier throughout the 1963/64 season. But, despite Law's goals, the Reds' hopes of First Division, FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup glory had been extinguished by Liverpool, West Ham and Sporting Lisbon respectively, all late on in the season. Thus, when Nottingham Forest arrived at Old Trafford on April 25, 1964, the only issue to be resolved was just how many goals Law would end the season with.

The Occasion: True to form, the Scot bagged two more clinical close-range finishes against Forest, and missed a chance to bag an amazing eighth hat-trick of the season late on. Law had to settle for 46 goals from 42 appearances, and he later admitted: "I was flying, but because of injuries and suspensions, I missed another 20 games. That set me wondering: how many goals might I have scored if I had been available for those games?" .

The Aftermath: Although Ruud van Nistelrooy (44 goals in 2002/03) and Cristiano Ronaldo (42 goals in 2007/08) have come close, the Scot's club record remains intact over four decades on, and he is second in the Reds' all-time top goalscorers list with 237 goals from 404 games.

OT 100 #26: Champions again

In just the seventh season after Munich, United's rebuilt side mounted a sustained title challenge against bitter rivals Leeds, in a race which went down to the wire...

The Background: Six straight wins, including a vital 1-0 victory at Elland Road, had United in strong contention for the Division One title, lurking a point behind top spot and with a vastly superior goal difference to the rest of the division. League leaders Leeds travelled to Birmingham in their final game of the season, while United simultaneously entertained Arsenal and still had a game against Aston Villa to come.

The Occasion: Matt Busby took the decision to field Denis Law who, hours before kick-off, had been hobbling home from treatment on a gashed knee, and the patched-up Scot promptly bagged two goals. George Best added a third in a 3-1 win, while Leeds, who had fallen 3-0 down before roaring back to 3-3, couldn't conjure a late winner at St Andrews. They had finished their season level on points with United, lagging by 20 in the goal difference stakes, rendering the Reds' final day trip to Aston Villa a formality.

The aftermath: The Reds lost 2-1 at Villa Park, but were nevertheless crowned champions for the sixth time. For Bobby Charlton, United's goalscorer at Villa, the triumph marked United's return from the ashes of Munich. "We were making football that apart from winning matches was also lighting up the sky," he said. "A glow had come back to the environs of Trafford Park and it had nothing to do with the fire and the smoke and the sulphur of the factories. We had made it clear that once again Manchester United could be a great side."

OT 100 #27: World watches

Old Trafford had first staged international football in 1926 and, 40 years later, M16 prepared to play host to the biggest sporting spectacle in the world - the World Cup...

OT's World Cup calendar

13/07/66 - Portugal 3 Hungary 1
Attendance: 37,000

16/07/66 - Portugal 3 Bulgaria 0
Attendance: 26,000

20/07/66 - Hungary 3 Bulgaria 1
Attendance: 22,000

The Background: As soon as England's bid to stage the 1966 World Cup was successful, with Old Trafford established as a group stage venue, changes were actioned. Gone were obstructive roof pillars in the North Stand, and in came cantilevering, along with the first private boxes in English football. With the stage set, Old Trafford was allocated group three, which comprised Brazil, Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal.

The Occasion: The star draw, Brazil, played each of their three games across the North-West at Goodison Park, prompting attendances which ranged from roughly 48,000 to 62,000 spectators. Old Trafford, handed the less illustrious ties of Portugal against Hungary and Bulgaria, then the meeting between the latter pair, could only boast gates ranging from 22,000 to 37,000. Two wins for Portugal in M16, allied to an eye-catching 3-1 win over Brazil in Merseyside, rendered Hungary's final game win over Bulgaria a dead rubber.

The Aftermath: The Soviet Union ousted Hungary in the second round, but Eusebio's Portugal marched into the semi-finals before exiting to England, courtesy of two Bobby Charlton strikes. In the final, the hosts overcame West Germany after extra time, assuring the 1966 World Cup of an indelible berth in English folklore. Over half a century after its first taste of the globe's biggest sports tournament, Old Trafford is hoping to sample a second World Cup, should England's 2018 bid be successful.

OT 100 #28: Forest felled

Another season, another tight title race. With Liverpool, United and Forest going for the trophy, the Reds welcomed Forest to Old Trafford in an encounter of huge importance...

1966/67 League Statistics
Final Division One Table

1. United - P42 W24 D12 L6 GD39 60Pts
2. Forest - P42 W23 D10 L9 GD23 56Pts
3. Spurs - P42 W24 D8 L10 GD23 56Pts
4. Leeds - P42 W22 D11 L9 GD20 55Pts

Top Goalscorers
Law - 23
Herd - 16
Charlton - 12
Best - 10
Aston, Sadler - 5

Top Appearances
Best, Charlton - 42
Dunne - 40
Crerand - 39
Stiles - 37
Sadler, Law - 36

The Background: Going into the nitty-gritty of the 1966/67 season, United were a point off league leaders Liverpool, with Nottingham Forest lurking in third spot. When Forest, managed by former United stalwart Johnny Carey, arrived at Old Trafford on February 11, 1967, whoever emerged victorious was well set for the remainder of the run-in.

The Occasion: A tense encounter between two sides full of quality, but well aware of the implications of defeat, yielded few chances. The solitary goal, when it came, wasn't even a half-chance. On 84 minutes, a spell of late United pressure culminated in a right-wing cross slung in by George Best, and met in the most spectacular fashion by Denis Law, who wrapped himself around a Forest centre-back to strike an incredible scissor-kick and send the ball hurtling into the Stretford End goal. The explosiveness of the hit was matched only by that of the euphoric, writhing terrace celebrations as United took a huge step towards the title.

The Aftermath: Matt Busby's Reds remained unbeaten throughout the remainder of the league season, and the gravity of Law's goal only became fully apparent at the end of the season, with second-placed Forest finishing four points off the pace as the Reds regained the Division One title. The victory booked United another crack at the European Cup, which was duly secured for the first time the following season.

OT 100 #29: Bobby dazzler

In August 1967, United hosted Tottenham in the Charity Shield. The meeting of two top class sides transpired to be a thriller, lit up by one of the greatest goals in Old Trafford history...

A Knight's Tale

"Denis Law won the ball at the goal-line to the left of the near posts and made off irresistibly down the left side. When the full-back, Joe Kinnear, came to challenge, Denis went by him as though he didn't exist. I had been out on the left, but moved inside to create the space that would accommodate Denis' run. Brian Kidd had already announced an easy ability to slip his marker, and he did this again, perfectly, before inviting a pass.

"Denis laid the ball into Kidd, who quickly rolled it across the front of the 18-yard line and into my path. The shot swirled past Pat Jennings, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. The movement lasted no more than five or six seconds. I had made my run without ever being near the ball. The Spurs defence had not come near to closing the hole made for me by Denis Law's charge and the movement of young Kidd."
- Sir Bobby Charlton

The Background: Jimmy Robertson put Spurs ahead within two minutes, then a huge goal kick from Pat Jennings bounced over Alex Stepney to double the visitors' lead inside the first 10 minutes. Then came United's riposte; a stunning goal from Bobby Charlton.

The Occasion: Denis Law won the ball and scampered down the left touchline with blinding pace beating two men, before finding Brian Kidd. The 18-year-old in turn burst infield and slipped the ball to the onrushing Charlton, who unleashed a shot which left Jennings clutching at scorched air. Simple, but devastating, and constructed in the blink of an eye. BBC Commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme exclaimed: "What a goal! That was a goal good enough to win the League, the Cup, the Charity Shield, the World Cup and even the Grand National!"

The Aftermath: Further goals from Charlton and Law, plus one from Frank Saul for Spurs, ensured a 3-3 draw and a shared shield, while United went on to end the season as European champions.
