Offside!: Moston residents in bid to block FC United stadium bid

Hundreds of people have launched a campaign to block a bid to use playing fields for a new stadium for rebel football club FC United of Manchester.

The club – formed in protest at the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United – want to build a 5,000 capacity stadium on the council-owned Ronald Johnson playing fields, close to St Mary’s Road and Lightbowne Road in New Moston.

But people living close to the site – currently home to a junior football team – have vowed to fight the plans. Nearly 1,000 have signed a petition against the proposals, which they are to take to the town hall.

FC United, who have played at Bury's Gigg Lane ground since being formed in 2005, want to move to Manchester. Joanne Hilton, who lives on St Mary’s Road, said: "The community does not want this. It’s our local field and it has always been for us.

"There isn’t much greenery in Moston and we don’t want a stadium here.

"It has nothing to do with football. This field was gifted to the public and nothing was ever meant to be built here. There will be crowds, cars and there will be alcohol and the problems that causes."

The plans are expected to go before the council for approval in July.Moston Juniors currently hold a lease at the site until 2032 and pay £1,000 rent a year.

A spokesman for Moston Juniors said they had held positive meetings with FC United and the council.

Andy Walsh, general manager of FC United, who play in English football's seventh tier, said: "Football matches would be played there 25 to 30 days a year.

"We have always dealt with things in an open and honest way.

"The people of Moston Juniors and Moston are the very people whose views we have to take into account. This is not just about football, it's about creating a community facility and that is all part of the consultation over the coming weeks."

Moston councillor Paul Murphy said that the plans were far from a done deal.

He said: "There is a covenant on the land and the Charity Commission need to be satisfied this can happen. And if Moston Juniors are not happy with the plans, this is not a goer."

Eamonn O'Rourke, from the council, said: "We asked FC United to carry out a full public consultation and this is now under way. All representations will be taken into consideration before any final decision is made."

Karl Marginson: FC United manager looking forward to new home

TEAMtalk.com - Sunday 12th October 2014 10:00
FC United rise looks set to continue

Sky Sports News HQ's James Cooper looks at the latest chapter in the rise of FC United of Manchester as they prepare to open their new stadium.

Their story is unrivalled in football's modern era - born out of fury following Malcom Glazer's Manchester United takeover, the men and women who formed FC United of Manchester are about to cement their place in the game's history by laying down permanent roots at the club's first home.

Few believed those who walked away from Old Trafford in protest would amount to anything tangible but 'The Rebels' have climbed the leagues, basing themselves at Bury's Gigg Lane and latterly Stalybridge Celtic.

Currently seventh in the seventh tier of English football, the club's chief executive Andy Walsh, who has been there since day one, predicts the new stadium in north Manchester will be another crucial turning point.

"No other football club has done this," Walsh said. "No other group of supporters have ever done this, starting a football club from scratch and building a facility like this is testimony to the strength of the supporter ownership model.

"We're constantly told as football fans that it's not our place to concern ourselves with the running of the game, the running of football clubs - leave that to others who know better than us. Well, we're proving here that we're doing pretty well ourselves, that football fans should and can have a say in the way that the game is run."

The birth of FC United of Manchester was unconventional and there have certainly been growing pains but this is a club which likes to do things differently.

Like many clubs, they have received funding for their new home in Moston but a Community Shares issue saw their fans raise around £2m of the £6m required for the scheme.

Another man who's been there since the early days is manager Karl Marginson, someone who's just looking forward to having his own home dressing room.

"It'll be take-off time," Marginson said. "We'll have a dressing room, which we've never had. We train at a great facility but it is a community used facility and we can't get in there to get the players changed.

"Now they'll be able to arrive here at the ground, get changed in the dressing room, all the banter that goes on in most dressing rooms will be thrown about.

"And I'll have somewhere that I can base myself, I'll have an office where I can dish out good news or bad news, whichever it may be, rather than doing it in a corridor or a toilet somewhere where we need to play. But once we're here it will be a football club."

There are plenty of new ideas incorporated into the club's new HQ, some supporters are nurturing a nature reserve on the edge of the stadium site, another has created a mosaic which will take pride of place in the entrance hall.

But FC United have also drawn on the past and one of football's most revered venues by regenerating an entire stand from one of the oldest grounds in the world - the Drill Field, formerly home to Northwich Victoria.

"When that football club hit the rocks, the stand and the rest of the ground were going to be crushed," Walsh added.

"We worked with Cheshire West council and the team that was taking the stand down to dismantle it, bring it here, re-engineer it, put it up here on the end of the ground, and there'll be housing for two to two and half thousand supporters on a large terrace cheering the team on."

The Broadhurst Park site is seven miles from Old Trafford but just two miles from Manchester United's birthplace in Newton Heath, a quirk that's reflected in the wooden cladding on the main stand designed to evoke the railway heritage of the club they walked away from.

As well as the main pitch, which boasts a sprinkler system, two further 3G pitches are under construction, while the club is also providing a couple of grass pitches for local side Moston Juniors.

Walsh said: "To have achieved the success that we've had on the pitch in the last nine years has been remarkable.

"To actually build a £6m facility that's not only going to have our first team games but our womens' games, our youth team games, the games of local junior football clubs, providing facilities, training facilities, classrooms, function rooms, meeting rooms for people in north Manchester and the wider Manchester area is a remarkable achievement."

A green and gold anti-Glazer scarf attached to the builder's fences is a reminder that feelings still run deep at FC United of Manchester but as the club looks towards the second decade of its existence there's a feeling the future will be more about 'us' than 'them'.

FC United of Manchester seal fourth promotion against Stourbridge as they edge closer to the Football League

* FC United of Manchester was set up as a club in protest of the Glazer family's takeover of Manchester United
* Their 1-0 over Stourbridge on Tuesday night has sealed their fourth promotion as Evo-Stik Northern Premier Champions
* It means that the club are just two promotions off the Football League

FC United of Manchester, the club set up in protest at the Glazer family's takeover of Manchester United, are now two promotions away from the Football League.

On an emotional night in front of 3,588 noisy fans the Rebels, soon to celebrate their 10th anniversary, sealed the fourth promotion of their short history with this nervy win over Stourbridge saw them crowned Evo-Stik Northern Premier champions.

Hundreds of ecstatic supporters invaded the pitch at the final whistle as the breakaway outfit secured elevation to the sixth tier after the heartbreak of no less than four play-off defeats.

FC United of Manchester players celebrate securing promotion following a 1-0 win over Stourbidge

The club's fourth promotion in their short history sees them come within two more of the Football League

FC will move to a new 5,000 capacity stadium of their own in May, ending a nomadic existence spent entirely on the road.

And it was the Tameside Stadium, home of neighbours Curzon Ashton, that hosted the latest chapter in an already significant history.

In a tense first-half winger Craig Lindfield, a building estimator, headed against the bar as the home side struggled to break down a resolute Stourbridge defence.

And it appeared not to be their night when sub Shelton Payne had a volley cleared off the line.

But on 69 minutes student and full back Greg Daniels rose unmarked to head home the impressive Lindfield's cross and spark joyous scenes.

It was the perfect finish from the former Macclesfield apprentice who was last week painting houses while on holiday from university.

FC came into existence in 2005 when a group of United supporters, despairing of the debt-burdening Old Trafford takeover by the US-based family, decided enough was enough and created their own democratically-run club which kicked off at the bottom of the pyramid in North West Counties Division Two.

From an initial meeting of a dozen at a curry house in the Rusholme district of Manchester they now boast more than 4,000 members, each of whom can claim to be an owners.

Many of those were in fine voice here.

Meanwhile, 30 miles down the road the Class of '92's Salford City celebrated promotion from the Evo-Stik Division One after title rivals Darlington 1883 could only draw 1-1 at Warrington Town.

That result means the club, partly owned by United legends Phil and Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, were crowned champions in the high-profile quintet's first season at the helm.

FC United manager Karl Marginson, who has been with the club since day one, believes 'anything is possible'.

'We've got a ground of our own,' he said, before a fan planted a kiss on his cheek.

'There's no reason why the league is not possible. We have to provide that for these supporters because they deserve it.'

Marginson admits he did not know what to expect when he took over the fledgling club.

'I didn't know what to think,' he said.

'I didn't have a clue. But it's something I'm immensely proud of. It's something we have to hold onto.'

Fans storm the pitch as the breakaway outfit celebrates a significant moment in their short history

When asked how he was going to celebrate Marginson added: 'I'm going to go to the Nag's Head if it's open when I get home.'

General Manager Andy Walsh, who has also been with FC from the beginning, echoed his manager's comments.

'We will assess where we are going to go,' he said. 'We're not in a hurry and we've always been about building for the long-term. This is a football club that is built on the ambitions and beliefs of its supporters.

'I think the Football League is very possible. We have a manager and coaching staff that have shown they can challenge. I firmly believe they can manage and coach in the Football League and I hope it's with us.'

Disharmony at FC United of Manchester intensifies as board member quits

• Adam Brown stands down citing ‘hate campaign’ against board
• General manager Andy Walsh left in March after mounting criticism

An increasingly acrimonious period of infighting at FC United of Manchester – the breakaway club set up after the Glazer family’s takeover of Manchester United – led to another resignation on Monday after one of the board members announced he would be standing down because of what he described as “an orchestrated campaign” against the regime.

Adam Brown’s resignation, citing a “hate campaign” and “personal attacks”, follows the decision of Andy Walsh, the general manager, to stand down amid criticisms from parts of the fanbase that the club have abandoned their founding principles and with a potentially volatile general meeting scheduled for Sunday, when he was facing a vote of no confidence.
FC United of Manchester: how the togetherness turned into disharmony

The Guardian reported on 31 March how the club’s famed togetherness, leading to the move to their £6.3m Broadhurst Park stadium this season and the team’s rise to the National League North, the sixth tier of the football pyramid, had been threatened by a series of divisions that had led to legal action, resignations, protests and gagging orders.

Brown, a close ally of Walsh, has been one of the driving forces behind the club since it was formed in 2005. Both men have been instrumental in FC’s success over the last 11 years but their regime has increasingly come under fierce criticism in recent weeks.

“An orchestrated campaign against the board, the staff, the club collectively and some of us individually, has made life very difficult,” Brown said in a statement. “While in a democratic club debate and disagreement is part and parcel of what we are, that debate must be conducted in an atmosphere of respect. Debate has increasingly been conducted in a fashion that is not acceptable including unjustified personalised attacks on some staff, volunteers and individual board members.”
