Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind face exit as Manchester United target Antonio Rudiger

* Jose Mourinho is looking to revamp his Manchester United defence
* Chris Smalling and Daley Blind face uncertain futures at Old Trafford
* Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian could be sold in January transfer window
* United are targeting Roma's Germany defender Antonio Rudiger

Manchester United stars are facing the axe as Jose Mourinho plots a revamp of his defence.

Chris Smalling and Daley Blind’s futures at the club are under a cloud, with Mourinho targeting a centre back and a right back in January.

Work behind the scenes has already begun identifying defensive reinforcements as the Portuguese manager plans big changes to his back four just nine games into the Premier League season.

Manchester United defenders Chris Smalling (left) and Daley Blind (right) are facing the axe. Blind and Smalling face an uncertain future with Jose Mourinho looking to revamp his defence

Eric Bailly, who is out for two months with a knee injury, has impressed the United manager since arriving from Villarreal and his position at centre half appears secure.

United have conceded 12 goals in the Premier League this season, the second most of any club in the top 10. Four of those came in the humiliating loss at Chelsea last Sunday, in which Smalling and Blind were well below-par.

Smalling made a bad mistake as Pedro scored after just 30 seconds and Mourinho is said to have berated the England international after the game.

Mourinho also wants a natural right back to compete with Antonio Valencia, who is more accustomed to playing in a wide midfield role.

United will consider selling Rojo and Italy right back Matteo Darmian when the transfer window re-opens, while left back Luke Shaw is yet to fully convince Mourinho either.

The Red Devils will also consider selling centre Marcos Rojo who has failed to impress

Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, who can play right back or centre half, is under consideration at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old Germany international, who is also on Chelsea’s radar, is fit again after a serious knee injury and will be watched regularly by United spies between now and the winter window.

Roma want to keep Rudiger, regarded as one of the best young centre backs in Europe, but an offer of £35million could tempt the Serie A club.

United are targeting £35million-rated Roma centre back Antonio Rudiger (centre)

United are also struggling at the other end of the pitch, and several members of the squad believe Wayne Rooney should be given the chance to re-assert his position as the club’s No 1 striker.

Rooney, who has missed the last two games through injury, had been used in an attacking midfield role and then dropped by Mourinho.

But a number of his team-mates believe the 31-year-old can still have a major impact in the No 9 role.

After scoring four in four at the start of his United career, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has gone off the boil, failing to score in his last five Premier League games.

Jose Mourinho wants Chris Smalling and Phil Jones 'to be brave' and step up as Marcos Rojo adds to Manchester United's injury problems

* Marcos Rojo suffered a left knee injury during the first half of the match
* Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are both still out of the team with injuries

Jose Mourinho has challenged Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to show courage and return to action as soon as possible after Marcos Rojo went off injured in Manchester United's win over Anderlecht.

Rojo suffered a left knee injury during the first half of the Europa League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford and could not continue.

Mourinho said after the game that Jones and Smalling - two players recovering from injury - need to show strength and return to action as soon as possible.

He added: 'I think it's time for Jones and Smalling to be brave, to risk because for the team you have to do everything.

'You cannot do miracles. I don't expect miracles but we have to try to do everything to accelerate the process.

'With a special spirit you can (be back) sooner than be expected, so instead of mid-May they can come back the beginning of May. If it was me, I think tomorrow.'

Manchester United team-mates Eric Bailly and Luke Shaw comfort Rojo as he lays on the turf

Rojo tried to carry on following a challenge with Alexandru Chipciu in the first half but had to be stretchered off moments later.

'It's fairly negative,' said Mourinho when asked about Rojo.

'I don't think they are easy injuries, but I prefer to wait until all the tests are done tomorrow. I can't speak what I feel because I am the manager not the doctor.'

Setidaknya buat rotasi.

sayangnya Mou tidak berani ambil resiko tadi malam. pdhl gw ngarep minimal Axel / TFM bisa ganti Baily menit 80an atau masuk utk ganti jadi 3 bek yg setidaknya bs meringankan tugas Baily walopun sedikit aja.

kayaknya khusus Baily trainingnya cuma joging2 doang deh ini

Manchester United stars claim duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been 'unfairly treated' after being challenged by Jose Mourinho

* Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are currently sidelined at Manchester United
* Jose Mourinho called on the pair to play through the pain barrier if necessary
* Jones is recovering from a broken toe while Smalling sustained a knee injury
* Eric Bailly is Mourinho's only recognised central defender for Manchester derby

Manchester United stars are disappointed by Jose Mourinho's treatment of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Mourinho has twice publicly challenged the defensive duo to play through the pain in the last week ahead of Thursday's huge Manchester derby.

The Portuguese questioned whether they have the same mentality and courage as he does in remarks which have left some of his squad feeling for their team-mates.

Smalling was also accused of lacking bravery in the immediate aftermath of a victory at Swansea in November, before it later transpired he had broken a toe.

The 27-year-old is stepping up rehabilitation after a knee injury sustained last month and has had a leg brace removed.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has publicly challenged Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. The England pair were both injured in a challenge between themselves on international duty

Mourinho initially suggested the England international would be back in 'mid-May' - but is now demanding he becomes available sooner in the wake of Marcos Rojo's cruciate knee ligament damage.

Jones, spotted at Carrington on Tuesday, is recovering from a broken toe. It remains to be seen whether either will answer Mourinho's rallying cry for the trip to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Eric Bailly would be Mourinho's only recognised central defender available if they do not, with Daley Blind likely to partner him.

Sportsmail understands United's players realise their manager has unorthodox methods - and are largely on board with them - but believe Jones and Smalling have been unfairly treated after missing the last seven games.

Mourinho has claimed that he isn't bothered about any consequences public rebukes can have, with Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw two others to have felt his wrath this season.

'When you give everything you have I cannot demand more,' he told Sky Sports.

'Even Marcus [Rashford] not performing very well – he was giving everything. I could never demand more. I could only support and say better days will arrive. But always super happy with a young and talented kid.

'Some other guys don't give everything they have. They have to. And when they do it I'm happy with them.

'I don't care. I just try to be who I am. I try to be honest and direct. I don't think about the consequences.

'Give me everything I'm happy for that. If you don't I ask you for more.'

Default Re: United defender under Mourinho

Manchester United make Victor Lindelof their first signing of the summer... so what does that mean for the centre backs left at Old Trafford?

* Manchester United made Victor Lindelof their first signing of the summer
* Jose Mourinho brought the Swede in for £31million from Benfica
* United were hampered by injuries at the back last season but have bolstered
* If all remain fit and available, who will be United's first-choice pairing?

Manchester United made their first move this summer by bringing in centre back Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

The Swede is certain to be first-choice for Jose Mourinho, who forked out a hefty £31million fee to secure the defender's services.

But with so many injuries hampering United's campaign last season, who will the 22-year-old's partner at the back? Sportsmail analyses each defender's situation after Mourinho's first statement of intent in the transfer window.

Eric Bailly

Jose Mourinho will hope this is the preferred partnership in defence all season.

Eric Bailly was United's stand-out centre back last season after his move from Villareal and his assured ball-playing, strong tackling and slick defensive work will make him a shoo-in for a starting berth at the heart of defence next season.

A Bailly-Lindelof axis will also offer dynamism to the back-line. Both young, vibrant, athletic defenders, it will be the pairing the Portuguese will want to see use to mount a serious title challenge — as well as Champions League campaign.

With no Africa Cup of Nations next year, Bailly will want to string together a strong season and shake off any lingering injury problems from last year.

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling was given the nod by the manager for the Europa League final — United's biggest game of the season. Mourinho clearly trusts the England international but there is no ignoring the increasing number of errors which have crept into his game.

Mourinho also called out the 27-year-old for being too 'cautious' in his rehabilitation from injury. And although bore out of frustration, the comment may still be a sticking point in the defender's mind.

His performances under Louis van Gaal were promising, and it appeared United had a long-term successor to Rio Ferdinand in their ranks. But his progress has stagnated and with the incoming of Lindelof, Smalling could see his game-time greatly reduced next year.

Perhaps his saving grace, however, is that United will be fighting on all fronts again next season. Champions League, Premier League and all domestic cups.

But if he is to reignite his England career, having fallen down the international pecking with the World Cup looming, he may well seek a move elsewhere.

Marcos Rojo

There is no question that Marcos Rojo has an admirer in Jose Mourinho.

Barring the odd rash challenge, Rojo had a stellar season last year and was one of the manager's most trusty soldiers at the back.

He cut out the flamboyant ball-playing and dangerous passing around the box and solely focused on his defensive duties, which improved his game to no end.

Able to play at left back, a problem for United at present, Rojo's place as back-up to the preferred Bailly-Lindelof pairing is firmly cemented next year.

Phil Jones

It is a tricky situation for Phil Jones. Six potential centre backs at Old Trafford does not seem likely come the end of the transfer window but Jones has insisted he is not threatened by the Swede's arrival.

But Jones had a solid run in the side last season — predominantly due to injuries elsewhere in the back-line — and did not do himself a disservice whatsoever.

He clearly stands above Smalling in Mourinho's eyes — despite the Portgueuse's 'cautious' comments also aimed at Jones — and will almost certainly be called upon throughout another game-laden campaign.

But will holding the fourth or fifth-choice centre-back spot be enough to satisfy someone with clear ambition?

He will want to succeed at domestic level as well as book his place to Russia with England next year. If a 'top six' club comes in for him, both United and Jones may listen to what they have to say.

Daley Blind

The ultimate utility man at the back — which Mourinho likes for his fluid formations in defence.

Although Blind has alluded to centre back being his preferred role, Mourinho will hope to deploy him as and when needed.

If United opt for a back-three he is the perfect man to slot in on the left-hand side — as is Rojo. But also as an out-and-out left-back he has his merits, especially with Luke Shaw's United career hovering in a difficult place.

There will be more regular football for Blind next season, however in the middle of defence is not looking likely.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling praises Jose Mourinho for stabilising their defence after recording 14th clean sheet at Burnley

* Chris Smalling helped Manchester United record their 14th clean sheet
* The centre-back praised boss Jose Mourinho for drilling the defence very well
* They haven't conceded in 2018 and have gone 504 minutes since last conceding
* Smalling also pointed towards a good relationship with Phil Jones as a positive

Centre-back Chris Smalling believes Jose Mourinho has instilled a defensive solidity at Manchester United after they recorded their 14th clean sheet of the Premier League season at Burnley.

United are yet to concede a goal in 2018 and have gone 504 minutes since last conceding when Burnley midfielder Steven Defour's free-kick beat David de Gea on Boxing Day.

So while all the talk surrounding United has been about the expected arrival of Alexis Sanchez, an attacker, it is their diligent work at the other end that is keeping them at the head of the pack chasing leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling praises Jose Mourinho for their solid defence

Along with Chelsea, United have the stingiest defence in the division and Smalling credited Mourinho's work in forming that solid base following the 1-0 win over the Clarets.

'I think we're well drilled,' he said.

'Even last year I don't think we conceded many goals. It's good that as a team we can shut up shop and not give the other team too many chances, knowing that more often than not we're going to go up the other end and score because certain teams can only keep us out for so long.'

Smalling has started the last two games at the heart of the defence with Phil Jones in a centre-back partnership which has not always been available to United's managers due to injuries to both men.

However, the two know each other well - Smalling having joined United in 2010 and Jones moving a year later.

'It's comfortable; it's great playing alongside him,' Smalling added.

'While all the boys are running hard for us at the front, if we can stop those goals it's brilliant.'

Mourinho's side temporarily reduced City's lead at the top to nine points before Pep Guardiola's men re-established a 12-point cushion by beating Newcastle later on on Saturday.

Smalling also pointed towards a good relationship with Phil Jones (left) as a positive factor. United are yet to concede a goal in 2018 and have gone 504 minutes since last conceding

Smalling is retaining hope City can still be caught and knows United have to amp up the pressure if they are playing before their rivals as they did on Saturday.

'We've all been there where leads have dwindled and teams have been caught, but we can only focus on ourselves,' he added.

'There is still a big points gap and we just need to make sure we win our games because if we don't then there's no point even talking about it.

'When we play on a Sunday, we're well aware of watching Soccer Saturday and all the scores. It is a little blow if you see all the teams around you winning, so we can only do our job.'

Burnley have now gone eight games without a win since beating Stoke in December to temporarily move into the top four.

Yet having run United close at Turf Moor, goalkeeper Nick Pope is confident their fortunes will change if they maintain their good performances.

'I think that's a big thing - it can't be underestimated, playing well,' he said.

'If we stay in this vein of form then the points will come.

'We're working hard every day in training to make it happen at a weekend. We'll continue that and with these performances results will come.'

Saya pribadi sih ngeliatnya pencapaian cleen sheet yg di raih united lebih ke faktor de gea yg emang jago bgt..

Sementara kalo bek, nomor satunya masih bailly, yg sayangnya justru cedera

darmian lambat
Blind standard
Shaw mulai bagus
Toni bagus cetak goal pula
Young lumayan cetak goal juga
Jones so..so laaah..
Nah kalo smalling, dr dulu ga pernah sreg liat penampilannya..sering blunder dan kaya orang canggung gitu, padahal udh senior itungannya
