S.League legends to grace EPL Masters

Singapore's favourite footballing son Fandi Ahmad leads a list of S.League legends that will take part in next month's EPL Masters Football tournament.

Fandi, who led Geylang United to the title back in 1996 in the league's inaugural season, will line up alongside the likes of Rafi Ali, Lim Tong Hai, V. Sundramoorthy and Nazri Nasir as part of the Singapore Masters side, which will face off against legends from Manchester United, Liverpool and a Barclays Premier League All Stars side.

2012 has already seen the EPL Masters Football, which was first brought to Asia in 2008, visit Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia.

The Singapore leg will be held on October 14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and fans are guaranteed a glimpse of some famous names in the game after all the sides named strong squads for the event.

Robbie Fowler, Patrik Berger and Stephane Henchoz, who were all part of the Reds' treble-winning season in 2000/01, will play for the Liverpool Masters, along with former favourite Steve McManaman.

The Manchester United Masters include three members of the side that won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1998/99 season - Andy Cole, Ronny Johnsen and David May, while ex-England international Paul Parker will also represent the Red Devils selection.

Former Chelsea trio Frank Leboeuf, Tore Andre Flo and Chris Sutton, who is better remembered for his time with Blackburn, will play for the All Stars Masters, along with controversial striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, formerly of Nottingham Forest, and Michael Thomas, whose injury-time strike handed Arsenal their first league title in 18 years back in 1989.

While they will be regarded as the underdogs in the tournament, there is plenty of quality in the Singapore Masters side to suggest they will give their Premier League counterparts a run for their money.

Malaysia Cup hero Abbas Saad will be looking to once again link up with Fandi to devastating effect, while Nazri, Malek Awab and Jang Jung will provide plenty of grit and determination.

And even if things do not go according to plan, the Singaporeans can always hope to rely on 'super-sub' Steven Tan, who was famous for his uncanny knack for coming off the bench and grabbing crucial goals.

Liverpool Masters: Paul Jones, Stephane Henchoz, Steve Harkness, Rob Jones, Patrik Berger, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Phil Babb.

Man United Masters: Kevin Pilkington, David May, Paul Parker, Clayton Blackmore, Ronny Johnsen, Ben Thornley, David Johnson, Andy Cole, Lee Martin.

Dapat info nih dari salah satu panitianya. Katanya tahun 2013 ini EPL Masters ditiadakan karena belum adanya kejelasan pemain yang bakal tampil di ajang ini. Mereka tidak mau event ini rugi seperti tahun lalu dimana saat itu mereka terpaksa membagikan tiket gratis kepada komunitas suporter Manchester United dan Liverpool di Indonesia demi Istora Senayan terlihat penuh penonton. Sayang banget yach tahun ini batal ...
