Rovers boss signs up former Man United midfield ace
DONCASTER Rovers made their first big signing of the summer yesterday when former Manchester United star Quinton Fortune signed a short-term contract. The midfielder, who had also interested several other clubs, has impressed whilst on trial with Sean O'Driscoll's side, prompting the Rovers boss to sign him up ahead of Saturday's opening league game at Watford. The 32-year-old played for Belgian side Tubize last season. A former Spurs and Athletico Madrid junior, Fortune made his senior debut with Mallorca, before returning to Athletico Madrid. He went on to become one of the stars of La Liga before being snapped up by Manchester United in 1999. Fortune made 76 appearances during a seven-year stay at Old Trafford, scoring five goals. He then joined Bolton but made only one start for the Trotters, ironically Rovers in the 2006-2007 FA Cup third round tie at the Keepmoat Stadium. Prior to joining Tubize, Fortune had the briefest of spells at Sunderland and Sheffield United. The former South African international will wear the number 19 shirt vacated by Richie Wellens following his switch to Leicester City. |
