Ilkay Gundogan says he could have signed for Manchester United but is enjoying life at Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan has admitted he nearly ended up playing in the red of Manchester United but couldn't be happier at Manchester City.

After much speculation surrounding his future, the German became the first signing under Pep Guardiola, when he left Borussia Dortmund after five years for £20million in June 2016.

Three games and one goal into life at the Etihad, Gundogan has settled well, but says it could very well have been United he had signed for.

'It was not the biggest lie,' he says in an interview with the Telegraph. Why did it not happen?

'Two years ago, three years ago it was not the time. I had a contract at Dortmund and I was not thinking of leaving the club so it was not a discussion,'

Following a difficult spell with injury - which included a dislocated knee cap to rule him out of Euro 2016 - the 25-year-old has said he is happy to be playing and enjoying life under Guardiola.

'We have a very good relationship and I just try to learn from him and he just tries to teach me and show me how I can improve and do better, he said.

'I think we are both enjoying it,' he says. 'I knew his style of football before at Barcelona and also at Bayern Munich because I played against them.

'So I was quite sure it fits to my style very well.'
