London (AFP) - Faithful lieutenant
Rui Faria will be Jose Mourinho's
assistant manager at Manchester
United a role that club icon Ryan
Giggs had hoped in vain to retain for
the upcoming season.

Faria, who has followed Mourinho
from Barcelona when the 'special
one' was the late Bobby Robson's
interpreter in 1996 to all his
subsequent clubs, is joined by
others who have experience of
working with the United boss.

Coaches Silvino Louro, who has been
with Mourinho for more than a
decade having started out as his
goalkeeping coach, Ricardo
Formosinho and Carlos Lalin -- who
also have previous experience
working with the Portuguese -- and
Emilio Alvarez have all been
confirmed as members of the
coaching staff along with analyst
Giovanni Cerra.

Mourinho, who will be hoping to
make United title contenders again
after losing their way in the past
three seasons under firstly David
Moyes and then Louis van Gaal,
claimed contentiously on Tuesday
Giggs had left the club after 29 years
of service as a player and then
assistant manager because he
wanted his job.

However, it is widely believed it was
only when the 44-year-old Wales
great learnt he would not be assistant
manager that he decided to end his
association with the only club he
ever served.

RUI FARIA'S VERDICT ON WEST HAM DRAW

Manchester United's assistant manager Rui Faria spoke to the media after Sunday's 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the Premier League, following Jose Mourinho's dismissal to the stands.

Here are the main points from Faria's post-match press conference:

MOURINHO'S SENDING OFF

"I have nothing to say about the referee’s decision. I didn't comment with him [Jose, about it] - we just spoke about what the team needed for the second half, any adjustments, and we focused on that really."

LACK OF LEAGUE GOALS AT HOME

"I think everyone saw again, we were the best team on the pitch. We didn’t have any tactical issues during the game. Offensively we have created chances in a comfortable way in the last few matches the people have come to see at the stadium. We are showing that we are a strong side and we create chances that in a normal way should be goals and we should win the game in a comfortable way. Okay it isn’t happening and we are getting frustrated at that but we need to keep at it and it will happen."

CONCEDING THE EARLY OPENER

"We will have time to analyse it and discuss the problem with the goal. When you concede a goal there is always a reason for that and something that went wrong in the defensive set-play. If something went wrong it’s something that we will try to correct. From Arsenal to this it is two completely different goals but we need to watch it back [on video]. We are trying to get the best results."

POGBA'S YELLOW CARD

"I think everyone saw that his frustration showed that it was a free-kick to us but it was a yellow card for Paul and he’s out of the next match. So there is maybe reason to express some frustration but it is also something that happens during the game, the referee’s decision. From our perspective it was a decision that should have been for the opposite side [for us]."

SIZE OF THE TASK AT UNITED

"We knew it was not an easy job and we have had to change a few things and this is what we are going to keep doing. We believe in the players and we believe in the team and what we are changing will arrive for sure. We knew that we had a lot of work in front and it’s what we are doing. It’s a big club, we know that it’s a big club and to be fair we are used to big clubs. We also know how to take a team to win and that is our job and we know that we will do it."

RUI FARIA LEAVING UNITED AT END OF THE SEASON

Rui Faria is to leave Manchester United at the end of the current season.

Rui has worked for the club as assistant manager for the past two years and has worked with Jose Mourinho for over 17 years.

Rui Faria said: “After a lot of consideration, and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to move on.

“I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences. However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.

“My heartfelt thanks go to the manager, Jose Mourinho, for the belief he had in me, all those years ago, when it all was just a student dream. I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship.

“I would also like to thank Manchester United and all the clubs where I have had the privilege of working during this period. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the staff and players who, in different ways, have made an important contribution to my growth as a person and as a professional.

“I wish you all the best for the future, knowing that you will always be my close friends.”

Jose Mourinho said: “17 years… in Leiria, Porto, London, Milan, Madrid, London again and Manchester. Training, playing, travelling, studying, laughing and also a few tears of happiness.

“17 years and the kid is now a man. The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager.

“I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me, but his happiness is more important and, of course, I respect his decision, especially because I know that we will always be together. Be happy, brother!”

Michael Carrick lined up to be Manchester United No 2... but not yet as Jose Mourinho reveals he will not replace Rui Faria next season: 'I'm not going to have an assistant manager'

* Jose Mourinho revealed he will not have an assistant manager next season
* Current assistant Rui Faria is leaving the club to spend more time with family
* The United boss is hoping Michael Carrick can one day fill the No 2 role
* 'I think it will be Michael Carrick... when he has his badges,' Mourinho said

Jose Mourinho is planning for Michael Carrick to be his long-term No 2 at Manchester United but won't name a formal assistant-manager for next season following the departure of Rui Faria.

Carrick, 36, will join Mourinho's coaching staff after saying farewell to Old Trafford in Sunday's 1-0 win against Watford – but the United manager says he'll have to be patient in his new career.

'I'm going to organise my coaching staff next season in a way where the assistant-manager doesn't exist,' said the United manager.

'I'm going to have coaches, assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to performance. And my analysts. I'm not going to have an assistant manager in the sense of the word.

'I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future when he has his badges, his pro licence. People think you can be a player one day, coach the next, but it's not like that. Your brain can feel ready but you need the practice.'

Michael Carrick will join the Manchester United backroom team after ending his playing career. Jose Mourinho revealed he will not replace No 2 Rui Faria (R), who leaves the club this summer

Carrick hugged Mourinho after being substituted to a standing ovation and thanked him in a speech to fans after the final whistle.

'I look forward to learning off him,' said the United captain. 'He is one of the very best. I am sure he will teach me a few things and certain we will have some success.'

Mourinho, who has worked with Faria for 17 years, said Carrick would offer a different viewpoint to other staff because of his long experience as a United player.

'He will have a different vision,' said Mourinho. 'I have to make the decisions but of course my assistants have an opinion and he will participate in every aspect.'

Meanwhile, United have doubts over Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial for next Saturday's FA Cup Final against Chelsea.

Martial was at a centre of a riddle when it was claimed he'd driven away from Old Trafford before kick off against Watford but Mourinho dismissed a fall-out.

Mourinho has said that the retiring Carrick is set to be his long-term assistant at Old Trafford. Faria and Mourinho have worked together for 17 years but the assistant is quitting this summer

'He was injured in a Friday training session, a knee problem. He had treatment at the training ground and stayed away. I don't know if he will be fit for the final. I am waiting for the doctor but if it's impossible to play today, I have my doubts.'

Lukaku has missed the last three games with an ankle injury and been doing rehab in Belgium. 'He is back on Tuesday. We will see,' added Mourinho.

Watford manager Javi Gracia believes he'll remain as manager next season. 'I think so. I've spoken to the owner a lot,' he said.
