Raheem Sterling back at Liverpool despite ongoing transfer saga as wantaway winger joins Nathaniel Clyne for pre-season duty
  • Raheem Sterling returned to Liverpool for pre-season duty on Monday
  • Manchester City have had two bids for England international rejected
  • Nathaniel Clyne arrived at Melwood following his move from Southampton
  • The England international sealed £12.5million transfer to Anfield last week
  • Jordan Henderson, Kolo Toure and Rickie Lambert also pictured arriving

duty on Monday as the squad step up their preparation for the new campaign.

The duo were joined by the likes of Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert and Kolo Toure to arrive at the club's Melwood training ground on Monday morning.

Sterling turned up in his Mercedes car and later trained in the rain despite growing speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The wantaway winger has been the subject of two rejected bids from Manchester City - the last offer being for £40million - with Liverpool holding out for £50m.

Sterling has already rejected a new contract at Anfield, worth £100,000-a-week, and Chelsea were thought to be interested in him, but will not match Liverpool's asking price.

Despite the uncertainty, the 20-year-old joined up with Brendan Rodgers' side on the same day Liverpool confirmed Sean O’Driscoll as the club's new assistant manager.

Sterling's England team-mate Nathaniel Clyne also arrived after sealing a £12m move from Southampton

Sterling's England team-mate Clyne will take part in his first Liverpool training session after securing a £12.5m from Southampton on July 1.

Former Crystal Palace full back Clyne will be among familiar faces after breaking into the England set-up last season.

He also joins a growing list of players to make the switch from St Mary's Stadium including Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

The England International joined Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, James Milner, Joe Gomez and Brazil star Roberto Firmino as a summer recruit.

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure met up with his team-mates on Monday after extending his stay at the club

Rodgers will be hoping his side can mount a Premier League challenge after a disappointing campaign last season.

The squad are preparing for a pre-season tour of Asia, which begins on July 14, where they will face True Thai Premier League All Stars, Brisbane Roar, Adelaide United and Malaysia XI.

Liverpool kick off the 2015-16 Barclays Premier League season at Stoke on August 8.

Liverpool flop Luis Alberto returns to Spain on season-long loan to Deportivo La Coruna
  • Liverpool midfielder has never started in the Premier League
  • Luis Alberto spent last season at Malaga, where he scored two in 20 games
  • Alberto will now move to Deportivo to try and recapture his form

Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto has completed his move to Deportivo La Coruna on loan.

The 22-year-old striker, who signed for the Anfield club in the summer of 2013 but has never started a Premier League game, scored twice in a loan spell at Malaga last season.

But the man who once cost Liverpool almost £7m has not been able to force his way back into Brendan Rodgers' plans, and will spend another year in Spain.

Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto has left the club on loan for another season after failing to impress

Alberto was on loan at Malaga last season, and will spend this year at Deportivo La Coruna

Alberto said he was looking forward to reaching the levels he was at before the move to Anfield in 2013.

'I want to reconnect with the pitch, enjoy myself, give joy to the fans and return the faith of my Coach,' Alberto told reporters.

'I spoke with the coach [Victor Sanchez], who knew me from Sevilla. He told me to come here and that I'd be very happy and feel like player again at the level of two years ago.

The Liverpool flop managed two goals in his 20 games for Malaga last season, but believes he can find his form

'He knows me and where I have to improve, and now I'll put myself at his disposal. I'm really looking forward [to playing under him].

'[Depor's objectives] are the same as they were at Malaga last season. We must think about survival and, once that's achieved, something else.'

Mario Balotelli missed the first day of Liverpool's pre-season training after he was granted compassionate leave following the death of his adoptive father.

The Italy striker was due back at Melwood alongside his team-mates on Monday, but he was allowed extra time off following the sad news, according to the Telegraph.

Balotelli, who grew up in Brescia, northern Italy, was in the care of foster parents from the age of three, and his adoptive father Francesco died at the weekend.

According to reports, the club still expect the former Manchester City forward to be able to join the club on their pre-season tour, which begins at the weekend.

The Reds leave England for the Far East and Australia on Sunday, where they will play four matches, against Thai All Stars, Brisbane Roar, Adelaide United, Malaysia XI.

Following that, they return to Europe to face HJK Helsinki in Finland on August 1, a week before they make their Premier League bow against Stoke on August 9.

  • The 20-year-old is hoping this latest action will push through a move to City
  • Liverpool rejected an improved offer from City of £35m rising to £40m

Raheem Sterling has told Liverpool that he does not wish to go on the club's pre-season tour.

The England international is determined to force a move away from Anfield and it is understood that he wants to stay behind in England to sort out his future rather than travel to the Far East and Australia.

Manchester City have yet to make their third and potentially decisive bid for the 20-year-old with Liverpool holding out for £50million.

Unless City make a decisive move in the coming days then Sterling, who reported back to Melwood for the start of pre-season on Monday, will be expected to fly with Brendan Rodgers’ squad to Thailand on Sunday.

Their first tour game is in Bangkok next Tuesday.

Raheem Sterling's form for club and country has attracted the interest of Liverpool

However, Sterling is prepared to force a stand-off with Liverpool to make it clear that he wants to move to the Etihad.

Such a stance would force Liverpool's hierarchy into disciplinary measures but they would be reluctant to have such a cloud hanging over them as they go on such a high profile tour.

Liverpool though found themselves in a similar situation two years ago when Luis Suarez was trying to engineer a move to Arsenal.

The Uruguayan was banished to train on his own before accepting he was going nowhere and knuckling down.

HOW IT ALL TURNED SOUR FOR RAHEEM STERLING AT LIVERPOOL
February 2010

Liverpool beat off competition from Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal to sign 15-year-old Sterling from Queens Park Rangers for an initial fee of around £500,000.

February 2011

Sterling scored five goals in Liverpool's 9-0 win over Southend in an FA Youth Cup.

March 2012

At the age of 17 years and 107 days, Sterling made his senior debut by coming on as a substitute in Liverpool's 2-1 defeat by Wigan. Then manager Kenny Dalglish brough the teenager on for Dirk Kuyt with six minutes to go.

October 2012

Sterling scored his first competitive goal for Liverpool at senior level against Reading at Anfield. His 29th-minute strike earned Brendan Rodgers' side a 1-0 victory.

April 2014

After nearly a full season of playing time for the first team, Sterling became a key part of Liverpool's title charge and scored three big goals in this month. First, he left Vincent Kompany and Joe Hart for dead in a 3-2 win over Manchester City at Anfield and was then the difference a week later in a 3-2 win over Norwich.

June 2014

Sterling was one of few positives to emerge for England from a disappointing World Cup campaign. The Liverpool forward played in all three group games in Brazil.

August 2014

Sterling picked up where he left off from the previous season by scoring two goals in three games - one in a 2-1 win over Southampon at Anfield and the other at White Hart Lane in a 3-0 victory.

October 2014

After a busy start to the season with Liverpool, Sterling claimed he was 'too tired' to play for England. He played 45 minutes against San Marino before being substituted and came off the bench for the final half hour against Estonia a few days later.

January 2015

Sterling was given a mid-season break by Liverpool manager Rodgers to prevent him from burnout after a lot of playing time in the first half of the campaign and a World Cup the summer before. Sterling went on holiday to Jamaica and missed two matches during his time away.

April 2015

In an interview with the BBC, Sterling revealed he rejected a new Liverpool contract. The teenager also added that he wanted to win things and his decision was not about money.

In response, Rodgers said in a press conference that Sterling would not be going anywhere.

May 2015

Sterling tells Rodgers he wants to leave Liverpool despite there being one more game left in the season.

Sterling is booed by the away fans during Liverpool's 6-1 defeat at Stoke on the final day of the season.

Sterling's agent claims Sterling will not sign a new contract with the club, who respond by canceling a scheduled meeting with star and his representative.

June 2015

Sterling is booed by home fans during England's friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

Liverpool reject two bids - the second worth £40m - for Sterling from Man City.

July 2015

Sterling returns to pre-season training but tells Rodgers he doesn't want to go on the club's pre-season tour.

Stoke eye up Glen Johnson on free transfer despite West Ham's interest in former Liverpool right-back
  • Stoke line up an offer for free agent right-back Glen Johnson
  • The defender is looking for a new club after six years at Liverpool
  • West Ham had also shown an interest in the 30-year-old

Stoke City are in talks over a deal for former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson.

The 30-year-old free agent has rejected a move to Besiktas in Turkey and has been discussed at West Ham as an alternative for Carl Jenkinson.

However, Mark Hughes is keen to bring him in at the Britannia Stadium and is hoping to convince the England international with a three-year deal.

Johnson left Liverpool this summer after six years at Anfield following his £17.5million move from Portsmouth.

The right-back has played 54 times for England since making his international debut in 2003, but is currently searching for a new club after ending his stay on Merseyside.

Liverpool signed 24-year-old Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton this summer in a move that is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Johnson.

Liverpool target Christian Benteke touches down in Portugal for Aston Villa tour
  • Belgian striker a £32million target for Liverpool
  • Fabian Delph not thought to have travelled
  • Tim Sherwood believes he can get another year from Benteke

Christian Benteke has landed in Portugal along with his Aston Villa teammates ahead of a pre-season training camp in the country.

The Belgium striker wants to leave the club to play European football amid strong interest from Liverpool, but has elected to take a different approach to Raheem Sterling by fulfilling his duties.

Benteke touched down in Faro airport in the Algarve on Thursday afternoon, accompanied by manager Tim Sherwood and his coaching staff, following a flight from Birmingham. Sherwood has reiterated his desire to keep Benteke, who scored 12 goals in an explosive spell at the end of last season to help Villa stay up, and believes he can get another year out of the 24-year-old.

Christian Benteke has travelled with Aston Villa despite remaining a target for Liverpool

Benteke was the Midlands club's hero as Tim Sherwood's side avoided relegation to the Championship

Villa boss Tim Sherwood believes he can coax another year at the club from Benteke

Benteke has a £32.5million buyout clause in his contract, but Liverpool have so far baulked at reaching that fee. Villa are adamant they will not accept less and are lukewarm about a cash-plus-player bid. An offer of fresh terms to Benteke’s £50,000-per-week deal, which has two years left to run, remains on hold as it is clear he will not sign an extension.

Sherwood, and Villa chief executive Tom Fox, believe they can keep Benteke by convincing him not to risk his Euro 2016 chances at a new club this summer and that bigger offers will come in 12 months’ time after a full campaign at his best. Benteke was recovering from a ruptured Achilles this time last year.

Villa captain Fabian Delph is not thought to have travelled with Villa, however, because his wife Natalie is expecting their second child. The couple already have an infant daughter Sofia.

Delph, who has an £8m release clause in his contract, has been linked with a move to Manchester City. Micah Richards, Sherwood’s first signing, this week revealed the England midfielder had asked his advice about a move to the Etihad.

Raheem Sterling returns to Liverpool training after calling in sick twice as uncertainty hangs over his future
  • Raheem Sterling trained with Liverpool after calling in sick twice this week
  • The England international returned to pre-season training on Monday
  • Sterling has asked not to travel on the club's tour to Asia and Australia

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has reported for training after a two-day absence.

The unsettled forward called in sick on Tuesday and Wednesday, fuelling fears over his future at the club.

The 20-year-old, the subject of two failed bids from Manchester City this summer, has asked not to travel on the club's pre-season tour of Asia and Australia earlier this week.

However, Sterling took part in Liverpool's training session on Friday and was pictured travelling with the squad to the city's Hope Street Hotel for lunch.

The England international was making a trip to the hotel for lunch before an afternoon training session

Liverpool are due to fly out on Sunday ahead of their first friendly against a Thai All Stars side in Bangkok next Tuesday.

The club's relationship with Sterling has become increasingly strained since the player rejected a contract offer of £100,000 per week in January.

Manchester City have not been put off by Sterling's turbulent summer and will make a third offer for the unsettled Liverpool forward.

City believe the rift between Sterling and Brendan Rodgers will enable them to land the youngster for much less than the £50million asking price.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who is preparing to make his debut for new club LA Galaxy this weekend, has expressed his disappointment over how the saga has developed this week.

Gerrard left Anfield at the end of last season after making more than 700 appearances for the club.

He told Sky Sports News: 'I'm not happy with all that carry-on. He needs to go in and see the owners. You don't have to throw in illness, or refuse to go on tour.

'There are millions of Liverpool fans waiting to see Raheem pull on a Liverpool shirt.

'It looks very disappointing from where I'm sat. The fans have shown him great support, they want him to stay and I believe that he should too.'

Gerrard believes the affair is playing out badly.

He said: 'It's very difficult for me to sit here and support him and the team around him...what they're trying to do with his career at a young age.

'It'll be a terrible shame if he goes somewhere and doesn't kick on as a player.

'It's slightly disappointing how far the situation has gone - but the only way I can see for him is out at the moment.'
