Default Re: United new era for the defence (under LvG strategy)

Why strengthening at left-back would be a waste of Manchester United’s resources

In the cash-rich, patience-poor world of the modern Premier League, the default solution to any dilemma seems to be to throw money at the problem, especially in the transfer window.

With Luke Shaw still recovering from the double leg fracture that has sidelined him for the majority of the season, and Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind having failed to prove themselves to be adequate place holders, rumour has it that Manchester United are keen to spend big to find another first-choice left-back.

Ricardo Rodríguez is thought to be the club’s preferred target, according to the Express, but making a move for the highly-rated Swiss defender, who was one of the most impressive performers at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, would be a poor and profligate decision.

Having already signed 20-year-old Shaw from Southampton for £27million two summers ago, it would be extremely wasteful to expend the same amount or more on another player whose transfer value and professional ambitions would demand the majority of first-team appearances in his position.

Regardless of his recent injury set-back, Shaw still looks more than capable of holding down his position at United for the next decade at least while the emergence of 18-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson this season further highlights how short-sighted and ill-conceived the idea of buying an expensive competitor would be.

Manchester-born, standing just over six feet tall and already showing promise with his crossing ability and unhurried defensive work in his seven senior appearances so far, it seems a smarter option to cover the club’s left-back slot by trusting in another exciting youngster backed up by Blind and Rojo until Shaw’s return.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has averaged four defensive actions and completed 60% of his take-ons in four Premier League appearances.

The money that would be wasted on buying an unnecessary left-back would also be better spent on other areas of the defence. Regardless of the form of Chris Smalling, United still look light on numbers and quality in the middle. Against the right opposition, Blind can be an elegant, ball-playing partner to the England international but too often they seem reliant on their teammates further forward hogging possession to make their combination look secure.

Whenever Van Gaal has instructed his team to open up, push forward and attempt to produce more chances by playing fast and loose in attack, the back-line has looked worryingly vulnerable and prone to pace on the break, powerful centre-forwards and well-angled and timed crosses from the flanks. United look a side still in need of reinforcements at centre-back even if the calibre of player they would wish to attract may be out-of-reach.

Rather than having Blind looking to play out from the back, a player such as John Stones could offer plenty of skill and imagination on the ball while also providing a more commanding presence in the penalty area. Given the sums quoted for the services of Rodríguez at Wolfsburg, United wouldn’t need to pull together too much extra loose change to bid for the Everton defender or a centre-back of his ilk. However, given the team’s struggles to secure Champions League football for next season they may not be as attractive an option for footballers looking for more than just a pay rise.

Daley Blind has obvious qualities on the ball but has at times looked vulnerable in defence.

Right-back is another area that area that could do with some attention just months after the arrival of Matteo Darmian from Torino in the summer. Whenever the Italian has been needed to cover for Shaw by playing on his weaker side, or missing through injury himself, Van Gaal has had to depend upon Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia to fill in as makeshift full-backs.

Although the former may have done well in new role and the latter has proven himself to be a trusted and disciplined performer for his manager, if not a popular option for the fans, the squad could do with another specialist: a player who can push and compete with Darmian while also offering something different.

Compared to Shaw, the 26-year-old right-back is less of a certainty for the future. While he may have looked impressive at the start of the season, especially in his defensive endeavours, there is certainly room for improvement in his role, or an upgrade on his place in the squad.

Matteo Darmian has created only seven chances in 18 Premier League games this season.

In the long-term, for a club with ambitions to return to the top of European football as a rival power to Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the latter stage of the Champions League, Darmian may need to be demoted to become more of an understudy to a superior, more complete proposition at full-back.

In the short-term, however, the right side of defence should fall behind the issue of a deficit in quality at centre-back with regards to priorities in the transfer market, with Smalling’s progress this season not enough to keep David De Gea secure without a stranglehold over possession in midfield.

United need more balance and a backline whose middle pairing is robust enough to be somewhat self-sufficient against opposing attackers. The regularity with which strikers have been able to roll Blind or otherwise dominate the Dutchman has been a cause for concern all season. Bafetimbi Gomis, Odion Ighalo, Cameron Jerome, Graziano Pellè and Christian Benteke have all managed to get the better of the ball-player who can be targeted and exploited a little too easily at times.

Luke Shaw averaged five defensive actions per match this season before being sidelined.

Shaw will soon return, Borthwick-Jackson has shown potential and, if the right signing can be made at centre-back, Blind and Rojo will be freed up to take on even more responsibility over manning the left-back position in the meantime.

There may be little doubt over the talent of Ricardo Rodríguez but he isn’t needed at Old Trafford. Signing him would be a waste of money and a waste of the expertise already at the club.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling: Daley Blind doesn't get enough credit but he is putting his critics to bed

* Manchester United news: Click here for all the latest from Old Trafford
* Man United have kept the most Premier League clean sheets this season
* Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have formed a formidable partnership
* Smalling says it is a joy to play alongside the Holland international

Chris Smalling has called Daley Blind a 'joy to play alongside' and believes his Manchester United defensive partner is confounding the doubters.

United have yet to find a way to replicate the dominance enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson, with a top-four finish and FA Cup glory the best they can hope for as this topsy-turvy campaign comes to a close.

Louis van Gaal's men are a work in progress but appear to have found the right formula at the back, with United's 15 clean sheets more than any other Premier League side.

Chris Smalling has earned many plaudits for his performances for Manchester United this season

Smalling's impressive displays have been key to that and earned deserved praise, but regular defensive partner Blind has at times been criticised - something his defensive partner believes is harsh.

'Ever since he joined the club he has rarely been injured,' the England international said. 'He has been able to bang out the games and have a very high consistency. He is a joy to play alongside.

'It is a good partnership. We know we can rely on each other. When there is a situation you don't have to over cover because you don't trust your partner.

'We trust each other fully and we bring out the best in each other as the games have gone on and the more games we have played together.

Smalling believes Blind has put any critics to bed but does not get the plaudits he deserves

'By each performance he is putting any critics out there to bed. He has been one of the top centre backs this year.

'It is great knowing he is that, obviously (he) is naturally a midfielder so he has that passing range and ability down to a tee and defensively he is very sound as well.

'He brings a lot to our defensive line in being able to play the ball out and cut through teams. I think he deserves more plaudits and I think he will get them if he carries on playing the way he is playing.

'Everyone is standing up and taking note that Daley is one of the mainstays of this team and he is keeping us ticking.'

Smalling pointed to Blind's impressive display in Sunday's 1-0 win against Everton, when Romelu Lukaku 'didn't get any change from him'.

It was a manful display that allowed United to hold out for a victory that keeps their top-four hopes on track, although making it three successive league wins looks a tough ask at Tottenham next weekend.

'There was a lot of relief,' Smalling said. 'It was one where we were hanging on a little bit. Against a good team, one goal is never going to be enough.

'You want teams to slip up but if we are winning our games then we have given ourselves a chance. We need to win games. Three points puts pressure on those above. It is a massive game at Spurs now.

'They are playing for a lot and so are we. We have found this season that we have often played better against the top teams and hopefully that continues.'

Default Re: United new era for the defence (under LvG strategy)

Opinion : United's defence deserves credit

Sunday’s 1-0 win over Everton means Manchester United have now kept more clean sheets than any other Barclays Premier League club this season – which is undeniably impressive, considering the injuries that have plagued the Reds.

Louis van Gaal's men frustrated the Toffees with an admirable defensive performance at Old Trafford, where Chris Smalling and Daley Blind both produced commanding displays against the physical threat of Romelu Lukaku. David De Gea was also typically alert in goal, making a fine save to deny Phil Jagielka from close range, while Dutch youngster Tim Fosu-Mensah later caught the eye as a second-half substitute after entering the action at right-back before moving inside to centre-back.

Anthony Martial eventually took the plaudits for his match-winning goal, and rightly so, but praise should certainly be directed at the defence that contributed to a 15th clean sheet. That is one more than top-four rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, and two more than league leaders Leicester City.

Yes, the points table is undoubtedly what matters the most for supporters, and nobody will celebrate the clean sheet standings on 15 May when this dramatic campaign comes to a close, but the Reds deserve credit for maintaining such solidity in defence amidst a run of terribly unfortunate injuries.

Luke Shaw began the season in excellent form at left-back but he has been missing since September with a broken leg, a problem that was worsened by further injuries to deputies Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson. It hasn’t been any better on the right flank, either, with Antonio Valencia sitting out for large periods and Matteo Darmian suffering a handful of niggling issues.

Those injuries have prompted van Gaal to hand Premier League debuts to youngsters like Donald Love and Guillermo Varela, and in total the manager has been forced to use 14 different defenders in top-flight matches this season – which makes United’s clean-sheet record even more impressive. It's easy to ask questions in hindsight, but how might the season have unfolded without all of these problems?

Just look at Leicester City's improbable consistency this season. They have been inspired by Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, without doubt, but the Foxes also have a solid platform in a back-five that has rarely changed in Kasper Schmeichel, Danny Simpson, Wes Morgan, Robert Huth and Christian Fuchs. Together, they've collectively made 145 Premier League appearances out of a possible 160 this term.

Smalling and Blind have thankfully been ever-present for United and their partnership at centre-back could yet be invaluable in the pursuit of a top-four finish. They have already notched 92 appearances between them in all competitions and will surpass a century if they feature in the eight remaining fixtures.

With a number of teams jostling for Champions League qualification, in a race that is likely to run until the final weekend, you cannot underestimate the ability to keep clean sheets. It could ultimately prove to be the difference between success and failure this season.

Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic impressed with the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah but calls for fans to be patient

* Nemanja Vidic has been impressed with young defenders coming through
* Vidic has called for fans to be patient saying it is hard to slot into defence
* Former Manchester United captain spent eight successful years with club
* Chris Smalling made 200th appearance for United in win over Aston Villa

Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has praised the emerging crop of young defenders at the club but believes settling into the back-line is much more difficult than for those further up the field.

A series of debilitating injuries have ripped through Louis van Gaal's side this season forcing the Dutchman to turn to the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Joe Riley, Donald Love, Regan Poole, Guillermo Varela, Axel Tuanzebe and Ro-Shaun Williams at one point or another throughout to plug the defensive gaps.

While much of the praise has been heaped on strikers Anthony Martial and academy graduate Marcus Rashford - who hit the winner to relegate Aston Villa on Saturday, former captain Vidic believes it is just as important to take note and support inexperienced defenders making the transition into the first-team.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah (L) and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson are two youngsters to play in defence for the club

'I think it's more difficult for defenders, especially when you have three or four of them playing together in the same match. For the young players who come in up front, you need that energy, imagination, happiness… you can let them play and be more free, but, in defence, I think you need someone who can lead these young boys,' he said in an interview with MUTV.

'United have always brought youngsters into the team and of course they have ability, they have shown that in the games they've played but, when you want to win the trophies, you have to patient with them. You have to give them the right matches, develop them slowly so you can think about keeping them there for many years.'

Chris Smalling (centre) played his 200th game for the club and his consistency has impressed the Serbian

Renowned for his bravery, the Serbian centre-back formed a prominent partnership with Rio Ferdinand during eight successful years at Old Trafford and after initially struggling to settle following his £7m move from Spartak Moscow in January 2006, Vidic would later go onto be captain of the club.

With United enduring yet another unpredictable campaign, Chris Smalling, who featured for the 200th time in the narrow 1-0 win over Villa, has been one of the more consistent performers this term and the England International has impressed his former team-mate.

'I've always loved Chris. I love him because he's a defender. His mentality is that he likes to defend,' said Vidic.

'I believe he can still improve but he is physically strong and, as I said, he likes to defend which, for me, is very important. You don't see many players nowadays who like to defend, there are not many in the world. That's his big ability.'
