Manchester United full back George Tanner is joining Salford City on loan.

The 20-year old has been recalled from a loan spell at Morecambe and was wanted by Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic.

However, ambitious Salford have stepped in and Tanner, who originally started his career as a forward, is due to link up with the League Two side until the end of the season.

Salford City, managed by Graham Alexander, are 13th in the table, 11 points off the play off positions.

Tanner's clubmate Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been offered a spell on loan at League Two Oldham Athletic where he has been training.

He is also talking to MLS clubs but is expected to make a decision today.

Darron Gibson becomes latest former Manchester United player to join League Two's Salford City as Class of 92 owners utilise connections

* Darron Gibson, 32, was once viewed as a long-term replacement for Paul Schole
* But he fell out of favour and fell down the divisions in recent years
* Gibson was released by Wigan last year and has been training with Salford

Former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has signed for the Class of '92's Salford City.

The 32-year-old has been training with League Two side this season after being released by Wigan Athletic last summer.

The central midfielder came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and was once viewed as a potential successor to Paul Scholes by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has signed for Salford City. The playmaker was once viewed as a long-term replacement for Paul Scholes at Old Trafford

He went on to make more than 30 league appearances for United during their era of dominance.

But he left the club in January 2012 after failing to make good on his early promise and he joined David Moyes at Everton, following in the footsteps of fellow former United players Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Louis Saha.

After a promising start where he had a run of 11 games without defeat, he again fell out of favour and headed to Sunderland for their ill-fated season where they were relegated to the Championship.

During his acrimonious spell in Wearside, he was suspended by the club after being arrested for drink driving after he was found to be three times over the legal limit.

The midfielder pleaded guilty and was given a two-year community order, and he left the Black Cats by mutual consent.

He later joined Wigan Athletic, making 18 appearances in the Championship, before he dropped down two divisions to train with Salford.

The Republic of Ireland international will be working for former United legends Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.

He is the second former United player to join the Ammies in the past week after striker James Wilson signed from Aberdeen on an 18-month deal.

Salford 0-6 Manchester United Under 21s: Class of 92 legends Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt watch on as their League Two club are thrashed in Leasing.com Trophy clash

* Hannibal Mejbri gave the Manchester United youngsters an eighth minute lead
* Amau Puigmal doubled the Under 21 side's lead before the half-hour mark
* Mark Helm struck a minute after half time before Charlie McCann made it four
* Two strikes in two minutes from Helm and Anthony Elanga made it six

Manchester United greats Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs watched on as their Salford side were thrashed 6-0 by the Red Devils' under-21 stars.

United's 'Class of 92' members and co-owners of the League Two club were all in attendance in the stands at the Peninsula Stadium for the EFL Trophy clash.

They saw the emergence of a new crop of promising United youngsters, spearheaded by the impressive Hannibal Mejbri.

This was Mejbri's first appearance in the competition since he arrived from Monaco a year ago and he will be hungry for more after opening the scoring eight minutes into the game.

Though he caught the eye - it was Anthony Elanga, who completed the rout with the sixth goal, who drew some special praise from Neville.

The United legend was co-commentating on Salford's website and said the winger is a 'nightmare to play against'.

Arnau Puigmal doubled the visitors' lead on the half-hour mark before Mark Helm struck either side of a Charlie McCann strike in the second half.

Elanga made it six to finish the scoring after 74 minutes, earning him rave reviews from Neville.

He was set free by Mejbri and opened his body before bending the ball into the far corner, which drew comparisons with Arsenal great Thierry Henry from Neville.

Salford City's Class of 92 owners want former Manchester United midfielder and Swindon boss Richie Wellens to be next manager at League Two club after interim boss Paul Scholes ruled himself out of running for the job

* Paul Scholes has been in temporary charge since Graham Alexander was sacked
* Salford owners were impressed by Richie Wellens winning promotion last term
* Wellens played for Salford in 2016 after the club was bought by United legends

Gary Neville and Salford City’s Class of 92 owners want former Manchester United team-mate and current Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens as their new manager.

Paul Scholes has been in temporary charge of the League Two club since they sacked Graham Alexander three weeks ago but they want to make an appointment and were impressed with the way Wellens won promotion from their division last season.

Wellens, 40, is a Mancunian who joined United at the age of 10 after being spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant Brian Kidd.

Richie Wellens (above) guided Swindon to promotion from League Two last season. Gary Neville and Salford City’s Class of 92 owners want Wellens as their new manager

He made only one first-team appearance for the club in a League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in 1999 - the season after the Treble.

He went on to have a useful playing career with 10 different clubs including Ipswich and Leicester.

He had a brief spell with Salford in 2016 - two years after they’d been bought by the former United legends.

Interim boss Paul Scholes has ruled himself out of running for the Salford job

As manager, Wellens has gained experience at Oldham and Swindon and Salford’s ambitions make it a tempting proposition even though Swindon are currently in a higher division, League One.

Salford are co-owned by the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Singapore billionaire Peter Lim.

This is their second season in the Football League having won promotion in 2019 by winning the National League play-off final on their first ever visit to Wembley.

Gary Neville and the Class of '92 appoint former Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer as Salford's new manager less than 24 hours after Richie Wellens was sacked after four months... but he'll go BACK to his Derby academy role at the end of the season!

* Gary Neville and the Class of '92 were criticised for sacking boss Richie Wellens
* They have replaced him with Gary Bowyer on a deal until the end of the season
* Former Blackburn boss Bowyer has left his role with Derby's U23s to take the job
* He is targeting the League Two play-off places as the owners chase promotion
* Jamie Carragher was among those to call out Neville following Wellens' sacking

Salford have appointed former Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer as their new manager until the end of the season, less than 24 hours after sacking Richie Wellens.

Gary Neville and his fellow Class of '92 owners were heavily criticised on Monday after axing Wellens after just over four months in charge.

But they have moved quickly to name his successor, giving Bowyer the job as they look to get back into the League Two play-off places. But in a statement on Tuesday, Derby said Bowyer will return to the club once the 2020-21 campaign is up and resume his role with the club's academy.

Ex-Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer has been named Salford manager until the end of the season. Salford's Class of '92 ownership group were not happy with the League Two side's promotion bid

In a Salford statement on Tuesday, Bowyer, who had been working with Derby's Under 23s and has previously had spells in charge of Blackpool and Bradford, said: 'I'm delighted to be here, I've got to first and foremost thank Wayne Rooney, Darrell Russell at Derby County for being so helpful to allow me to come here.

'Obviously today is a case of meeting the players and setting the expectations of what we expect of them from now until the end of the season.

Salford sacked manager Richie Wellens after 'showdown talks' with co-owner Neville this week. Wellens was axed just nine days after leading Salford to the EFL Trophy at Wembley Stadium

'We want them to be playing aggressive football both with and without the ball, and have a right good go at these remaining 11 games.

'We have an opportunity like everybody else in this league to try and force our way into the reckoning to try and get into the play offs and see if we can do that.'

Derby, meanwhile, said they 'wish Gary every success in the remainder of the season at Salford City and look forward to welcoming him back to his role in the summer.'

According to The Sun, Wellens held 'showdown talks' with Salford co-owner and former Manchester United defender Neville before he was relieved of his duties on Monday.

The decision came just nine days after Wellens led Salford to the EFL Trophy with a win against Portsmouth on penalties at Wembley - the first trophy since the club entered the Football League - but their league form has not been good enough.

Gary Neville defends pumping millions into Salford City with Class of '92 despite huge losses of £91,000-a-week as the Manchester United legend insists they do NOT need promotion to lift financial pressure

* Salford City chief Gary Neville has defended his investment in the League 2 side
* Club's owners Project 92 Limited lost £4.7m last year, amounting to 91k a week
* Neville admitted he and Class of 92 had invested 'enormous' money in the club
* But he said they were 'comfortable' and there was 'no pressure' to get promoted

Salford City chief Gary Neville has defended the millions he has pumped into the club despite huge losses revealed this month - and says there is no financial pressure on the team to get promoted.

Neville has made a huge investment in Salford alongside fellow United legends David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, brother Phil and billionaire Peter Lim - overseeing a run of four promotions in five years to help them reach the Football League.

But after three seasons in League Two, it has been announced that Project 92 Limited - the company run by the himself and his fellow United legends - lost more than £4.7m last year, equating to around £91,000 per week.

Neville was in the stands to watch his Salford side's must-win game against Mansfield Town - which the team had to win to stay in contention for a League Two play-off place - but they missed out after a 2-2 draw.

Gary Neville has defended his investment in Salford City despite recording huge losses. Neville's company Project 92 Limited lost £4.7m last year, it was revealed last month

He stood by his massive investment and said the owners were all 'comfortable' with what they were putting in and have only used the money they have - insisting they still believed in the cause.

'We've invested enormous amounts of money in the last seven or eight years. But it's all myself, David, Ryan, Paul, Nicky, Phil and Peter.

'Peter owns 50 per cent, we own 50 per cent. We've put lots of money in ourselves. We've chosen to do that. I'm not against owner funding. We put it in at the start of the season. The club is obviously robust in that sense.

'We only spend the money that we have. It is a lot of money to lose but we've come up from step eight and had to spend millions and millions of pounds on this stadium. And we knew that was going to happen at the very beginning. We do one day long for sustainability at the club.

'But we're trying to build a fanbase in a city that's not had a Football League club ever. It's new to us.'

Neville said himself and other United legends - including Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - were 'comfortable' with the money they were putting into the club. Neville insisted there was 'no financial pressure' getting promoted after a run of four promotions in five seasons previously

He said the drive of investing in their local football club was something that made their efforts worth it and insisted there was 'no financial pressure' to get promoted, saying missing out was just a 'sporting disappointment'.

'We could spend our money on other things. If we were driving fancy cars and doing all sorts of things with our money people might complain as well. But we've put it into our local football club and it's significant capital from ourselves, the class of '92.'

'The money that we put in is manageable between the seven of us. We're comfortable with our position. There's no financial pressure (to get promoted), but there is sporting disappointment.'

Gary Neville QUITS role as Salford City CEO with former Man United captain handing over reins to Nicky Butt after eight years, feeling 'safe in the knowledge that it is in good hands'

* Former Manchester United man remains a co-owner with Nicky Butt taking over
* Gary Neville said in a statement that the club needs somebody's full attention
* Salford City released a statement on Monday evening announcing the news

Nicky Butt is to take over from fellow co-owner Gary Neville as chief executive of Salford, the League Two club have announced.

Neville took on the role on a part-time basis after he and former Manchester United 'Class of 92' team-mates Butt, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs purchased the club along with Singaporean businessman Peter Lim eight years ago.

Since the acquisition, the club have risen from the Northern Premier League First Division North - the eighth tier of English football - to reach the League ranks and ex-team-mate David Beckham has joined them as an investor.

Neville, who has numerous other interests including a successful media career, is now stepping away from the day-to-day running of the club to allow Butt to take over as full-time CEO.

Butt, 47, left his role as head of first-team development at United last year.

Neville said: 'I have enjoyed my eight years and can't believe how much we have achieved in that time, and how proud I am of the hard work everyone at the club has put in to make a dream we had whilst on a train turn into a reality.

'I will now be able to sit back and enjoy the game on match days safe in the knowledge that it is in good hands.'

Gary Neville has resigned from his role as chief executive with Nicky Butt set to take over. Butt resigned his role as head of first-team development at Manchester United last year having been involved in coaching at the club for nine years. Neville is notable for having a number of pursuits and has renounced his mind Salford role after eight years

Butt said: 'I am delighted and welcome this opportunity, this pressure, this responsibility.

'I accept the responsibility of the long-term vision, whilst concentrating on the short-term goals and what is needed now, and will work hard to take the club to where we believe it can be.'

Salford said: 'The Club has seen a huge jump from being a semi-professional club to a professional club and with that progression comes change.

'Clear structures and roles across the whole club are needed to develop and grow and with a full time CEO in place we can professionalise the club further and strengthen the off field performances at an important time.

'It has always been the intention for the Class of ’92 to take senior roles to build and grow the club, and the time to do that is now.

'Nicky spent nine years at Manchester United post-playing in various coaching roles before finally leaving as head of first team development at Manchester United in 2021.

'Since then he has actively been helping and supporting the Club with his experience and knowledge. With all our support, Nicky is ideally placed to lead Salford City Football Club with great energy and focus through this next chapter.'
