”BANYAK orang yang mengira sepak bola adalah persoalan hidup dan mati. Saya sungguh kecewa. Sepak bola jauh lebih besar dari sekadar urusan hidup dan mati.”

Ada perasaan aneh saat mendengar statemen tersebut. Logika normal seolah berontak. Bagaimana mungkin persoalan hidup dan mati menjadi seekor "semut" jika dibandingkan dengan sepak bola. Jangan pernah mengkritisi statemen tersebut kepada seorang Bill Shankly. Wajahnya bakal berkerut, lalu dengan meledak-ledak berargumentasi. Bagi Shankly, keyakinan itu sudah terbatinkan. Football is everything. Sebanding dengan agama. Baginya, sepak bola harus disikapi secara total dan maksimal.

Penikmat sepak bola yang relatif baru mungkin jarang mendengar Bill Shankly. Telinga akan lebih akrab mendengar nama Sir Alex Fergusson atau juga Arsene Wenger. Tanpa bermaksud menyepelekan Fergie atau Wenger, berdasarkan poling TEAMtalk dan World Soccer 2001, Shankly merupakan pelatih paling legendaris di Britania Raya. Mengungguli 2 nama pelatih besar tersebut.

Pencinta Liverpool memujanya seperti malaikat. Dia dianggap sebagai pelatih terbesar. Selama membesut "The Reds" dari 1959 hingga 1974, Shankly telah menghadiahi pendukung Liverpool 3 gelar Liga Inggris, 2 Piala FA, 3 Charity Shields, dan 1 Piala UEFA.

Harap dicatat, bukan raihan gelar itu yang membuat pendukung Liverpool rela mendirikan monumen untuk mengenang Shankly. Pria yang meninggal pada 1981 tersebut dianggap sebagai peletak fondasi kebesaran Liverpool.

Saat kali pertama ditunjuk menjadi pelatih Liverpool oleh TV Williams—Presiden Liverpool kala itu—pada 1959, Shankly punya PR besar. Selain terpuruk di Divisi II, kondisi Liverpool sangat parah. Lapangan becek, tribun penonton reot, dan kamar ganti pemain amburadul. Reformasi total pun dilaksanakan Shankly. Shankly tak hanya berhasil menuntaskan problem internal. Dia juga sukses memberikan sederet pundi-pundi gelar, baik di kancah lokal atau Eropa, sekaligus memberikan dasar-dasar yang kuat bagi para penerus. Keberhasilan Bob Paisley pada era 1980-an, juga berkat jasanya.

KAMPIUN BRITANIA RAYA
Bill Shankly lahir pada 1913 di daerah pertambangan Glenbuck, Skotlandia. Suatu kawasan yang sangat menggemari sepak bola, selain politik tentunya. Sepak bola merupakan alasan untuk hidup. Pada periode 1890-1940, daerah Glenbuck telah menelurkan lebih dari 50 pebola profesional.

Shankly tumbuh seperti rekan-rekan sebayanya. Bekerja sebagai tukang tambang 6 hari seminggu. Hanya menyisakan Sabtu malam untuk bersosialisasi dan hari Minggu untuk bermain bola. Sangat membosankan.

Sepak bola sudah menjadi jalan hidup bagi Shankly untuk meretas kebebasan. Pada 1932, dia bergabung dengan Carlisle United dan beberapa tahun kemudian pindah ke Preston North End Club. Shankly tercatat pernah memperkuat timnas Skotlandia sebanyak 7 kali. Saat menginjak umur 33 tahun, pria berkarakter keras ini memutuskan gantung sepatu.

Karier kepelatihannya diretas dengan membesut Carlisle, kemudian berlanjut ke klub yang lebih besar seperti Grimbsy, Workington, dan Huddersfield. Fase paling penting pada 1959. Dia diberi kepercayaan oleh Presiden Liverpool, TV Williams, untuk membenahi "The Reds". Tugas yang sangat berat. Kondisi Liverpool saat itu compang-camping dan terpuruk di Divisi II.

Revolusi dijalankan. Untuk pola permainan, Shankly memperkenalkan ilmunya yang kemudian melegenda, the five-a-side games atau passing game. Menurut Shankly, sebenarnya sepak bola itu sederhana, yakni seni mengumpan dan bergerak. Yang diperlukan adalah kecerdasan berpikir untuk mengumpan dan mencari ruang untuk menerima umpan. Intinya, Shankly menekankan para pemainnya untuk menggunakan otak dalam bermain.

Pembenahan kedua, Shankly meminta agar tempat latihan di Melwood dipugar. Shankly punya cara paten untuk membentuk kesolidan tim. Dia mewajibkan semua pemain berkumpul di Anfield untuk kemudian berbarengan naik bus ke Melwood. Seusai latihan, para pemain kembali diwajibkan untuk balik dulu ke Anfield bersama-sama.

Shankly juga menanamkan filosofi penting untuk para pemainnya. "If you are first you are first. If you are second, you are nothing." Maksudnya, tak ada kamus untuk kalah. "The Reds" harus selalu yang nomor satu. Pelatuk yang ia canangkan saat itu, menggusur dominasi rival sekota (Everton) dan menjadikan "The Reds" sebagai klub nomor satu di Liverpool.

Hasilnya ciamik. Dalam empat musim, "The Reds" dia angkat kembali promosi ke Divisi Utama. Tak tanggung-tanggung, begitu naik ke Divisi Utama musim 1963-64, tahta jawara langsung direbut. Setahun berikutnya, untuk pertama kalinya Liverpool merengkuh Piala FA. Level Eropa juga dikangkangi dengan merebut Piala UEFA 1973.

Pada masa besutannya, Liverpool memasuki era gilang-gemilang. Tahun 1974, saat umurnya menginjak 61 tahun, Shankly memutuskan pensiun. Bukan terlalu dini. Dia sudah membawa banyak kebesaran buat Liverpool. Sukses yang lahir berkat filosofinya: sepak bola bukan sekadar hidup dan mati. (Yoyok/SOCCER)*

Tapi, g rasa SAF jg mengangkat prestasi United di masa keterpurukan..cmiiw, United sblm menang EPL waktu pertama kali digelar, juga udh puasa gelar selama krg lbh 26 thn..

IMO, selama kurun waktu thn 70-90an, United berada dibwh bayang2 pool, dan SAF merubah itu semua di era EPL bergulir..

So, jadi klo dibandingkan dgn apa yg sdh dilakukan bill shankly kepada pool, maka mnurut g SAF pun juga telah membangun kembali kejayaan United yg sempat "meredup"...

“Matt Busby is without the doubt the greatest manager that ever lived. I am not saying I think he is the greatest manager, I am saying he is the greatest manager. Facts can prove that. He had tremendous courage, and his foresight and ability, everything a man needs to be a football manager, Matt Busby has.”

These words were recorded in an interview with Liverpool’s great manager, Bill Shankly, back in the 1970s.

“I happened to be stationed in Manchester when the Blitz came to the city,” said Shankly. “I saw Old Trafford a few days after the Blitz, and when I looked at it, I thought `That’s the end. There will never be another football team here again.’ Tommy Curry was trying to keep things going then, but there was not even any water running into the place to have a wash, so the players could train. It’s the most amazing thing that this club, and this ground, has risen from this. It is a tribute to Matt Busby.”

It’s a shame most Liverpool fans can’t be as honest and gracious.
