![]() 2011 UEFA UNDER-21 CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS NEWS
England U21 handed tough draw ESPNsoccernet - November 9, 2010 England have been drawn against Spain, Czech Republic and Ukraine in the group stage for the 2011 UEFA Under-21 Championship finals. England, who finished as runners-up to Germany in last year's tournament, failed to secure seeded status for the tournament and had to come through a difficult play-off against Romania to book their place in the finals in Denmark. Seedings for the Under-21 Championship are based entirely on the team's results during qualification campaign and play-offs. Czech Republic were top seeds after winning nine and drawing one of their matches, while Spain were also seeded having won eight of their ten games. It appears to be a difficult draw for England, with Group A - containing Denmark, Switzerland, Belarus and Iceland - appearing to be the easier group on paper. England will play Spain in the Group B opener on June 12, facing Ukraine on June 15 and then Czech Republic on June 19. GROUP A A1 Denmark A2 Switzerland A3 Belarus A4 Iceland GROUP B B1 Czech Republic B2 Ukraine B3 Spain B4 England

![]() Andy Carroll left out of England Under-21 squad
Soccernet - November 11, 2010 Andy Carroll looked set to be handed his maiden England call-up after the Newcastle striker was left out of the under-21 squad for Tuesday's friendly in Germany. Carroll has been widely tipped to be selected by Fabio Capello for Wednesday's senior friendly with France and his omission from the Young Lions party will only serve to fuel that speculation. However, the 21-year-old was also left out by head coach Stuart Pearce for last month's UEFA Under-21 Championship play-off with Romania and that did not lead to a call-up from Capello. Pearce reportedly axed Carroll from the Romania matches after being unhappy about the nature of his withdrawal from September's Under-21 Championship qualifiers against Portugal and Lithuania. As well as taking the Premier League by storm since Newcastle's promotion - scoring seven goals in 12 appearances - Carroll has made headlines off the field for all the wrong reasons this season. But this does not look like putting off Capello, who is desperate to find a top-class foil for Wayne Rooney. Jack Wilshere also looks set to keep his place in the senior squad after being left out by Pearce, who today handed three players their maiden under-21 call-ups for Tuesday's game in Wiesbaden. Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran, 17, Swansea striker Scott Sinclair, 21, and Manchester City defender Ben Mee, 21, were named in what was a small 20-man squad. Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell was also back in the fold after recovering from the ankle injury which has sidelined him since August. England Under-21 squad: Frank Fielding (Blackburn), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough); Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea), Micah Richards (Man City), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Ben Mee (Man City); Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa), Tom Cleverley (Man Utd), Jack Cork (Chelsea), Henri Lansbury (Arsenal), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Fabrice Muamba (Bolton), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham); Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Scott Sinclair (Swansea), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd).

![]() Sterling and Zaha set for U21 duty with Pearce to name strong squad for Sweden friendly
dailymail.co.uk, Dominic King - 30 January 2013 Wilfried Zaha and Raheem Sterling will return to England Under 21 duty next week when Stuart Pearce names a strong squad for the friendly against Sweden. Both Manchester United forward Zaha and Liverpool winger Sterling played in England’s 4-2 defeat to Sweden in November but, in a move that could offers pointers to this summer, they will return to the Under 21 level as Pearce steps up his preparations for the European Championships in Israel. ![]() ![]() Strong squad: Both Wilfried Zaha and Raheem Sterling will be named for Sweden Sterling’s club mate Jonjo Shelvey – who won his first senior cap against San Marino in October – will also drop down a level. After next Tuesday’s game at Walsall, the Young Lions only have two more games scheduled – against France and Austria – before heading to Israel. England will discover today which qualifying group they will be drawn in for Euro 2015, which will be staged in the Czech Republic. There is even a chance they could end up being paired with Serbia, which could lead to issues following the controversial game in Krusevac last October. |

TheFAa.com - 31 January, 2013 Stuart Pearce names Manchester United defender in squad to face Sweden Manchester United defender*Phil Jones has been called into the England Under-21s squad for next Tuesday’s clash with Sweden in Walsall. The 20-year-old, who last featured for Stuart Pearce’s side at the European Championship in 2011, returned from injury for Manchester United in November. Equally at home in defence or midfield, he’ll add extra experience to the Under-21s squad who are building up for their*Euro 2013 Finals campaign in June. There is one new face in Pearce’s 24-man squad. 17-year-old Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, who has been impressive for the Saints in the Premier League this season, gets his first taste of the Under-21s. Pearce has also called upon regular players captain Jordan Henderson, Jason Lowe and Craig Dawson, who were pivotal as his team won six out of six last year and clinched qualification to Israel. “I’m lucky that I’ve got Lowe, Dawson and Henderson,” Pearce told TheFA.com. “You could manage for 50 years and not find*three more professional and dedicated players than those lads. We’re very lucky to have this clutch of players involved with the 21s.” Henderson is joined by fellow Liverpool stars Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling, who both made their Senior Team bows earlier this season, as well as Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom. And there is also a place for Derby County youngster Will Hughes, who made his Under-21s debut against Northern Ireland in November. “Will Hughes is a real talent in the Championship and he’s exciting to watch,” continued the former England defender. “We have to make sure he doesn’t play too many games as he’s still young but he’s worthy of his place in that Derby team as he makes them tick.” Pearce added: “It has been nearly three months since we were last together as a squad, so we are looking forward to meeting up again at St. George’s Park to spend time working on our preparations for what will be an important year. “We've always said that reaching major Finals at youth level is vital in a player’s development so they can learn about what they might expect, should they progress to the Senior Team and find themselves at a World Cup or European Championship. “For a number of the young players lucky enough to experience the Finals in June it will prove to be an invaluable time in Israel, and perhaps a springboard to Roy's side, with Brazil 2014 on the horizon.” The Squad in full : Goalkeepers Ben Amos (Manchester United), Declan Rudd (Norwich City), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough) Defenders Ryan Bennett (Norwich City), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Craig Dawson (Bolton Wanderers - loan from West Brom), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Tom Lees (Leeds United), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Adam Smith (Millwall - loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool) Midfielders Nat Chalobah (Watford - loan from Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Will Hughes (Derby County), Henri Lansbury (Nottingham Forest), Jason Lowe (Blackburn Rovers), Josh McEachran (Middlesbrough - loan from Chelsea), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool) Forwards Benik Afobe (Bolton Wanderers - loan from Arsenal), Tom Ince (Blackpool), Connor Wickham (Sunderland), Wilfred Zaha (Crystal Palace - loan from Manchester United) |

![]() 'The work starts here'
TheFA.com - Tuesday, 28 May, 2013 England Under-21s Coach says preparation is key during week-long training camp Stuart Pearce says this week's training camp in Turkey will be where much of the hard work will be done as England Under-21s build for the European Championship. The young Lions arrived in Turkey on Monday evening as they prepare for their opener in Israel next week. Pearce's side, who are on a run of nine straight wins without conceding a goal, face Italy in Tel Aviv to kick-off their Championship challenge. And the*Coach says this week will be about building the right spirit and mentality within the squad. "We’ll work mornings and mornings only. Like we have done in*Spain ahead of previous tournaments, we’ll make sure the team spirit is good and the focus is right," he told TheFA.com. "Ahead of us getting on the plane to Israel, this week is when we’ll do the bulk of our work. "We don’t want to slog the players too much physically, the mental side of relaxing them is very important. "Work regarding set-plays, pattern of play, it has to be done in this period. When you get into tournament football it’s all about playing and recovery, playing and recovery." Pearce is drawing on the experience from previous tournaments with the Under-21s. England are the only nation to reach the last four successive*Finals, and the former England left-back has led them on each occasion. Having reached the Final and semi-finals during his last three attempts, Pearce and his side are going to Israel with just one objective, and that's to win the Championship. "If I roll the clock back and look at my preparation three tournaments ago, I was unsure in my own mind of what worked and what didn’t, in regard to the preparation week. "I now know full well what is the right thing to do as I’ve seen the results of that. Getting the balance between rest and focus. He added: "The one thing you do know is that the team who starts the tournament will not be the team that finishes it, that is a fact. "I don’t think any team has ever relied on just eleven players for every game, certainly not the winning team. "You need to make sure you keep injuries to a minimum, making sure recovery is right, and not over-cook the players at the end of the season when they have had a long season. "They are the important things to think about when you are going into a tournament." England kick-off their Finals campaign against Italy in Tel Aviv on 5 June |
