Default Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United target Lisandro Martinez 'is ready to force his way out of Ajax' in order to push through a move to Old Trafford and 'may even refuse to continue training' as he looks to reunite with Erik ten Hag

* Manchester United have been pursuing the signing of Lisandro Martinez
* The defender is growing frustrated with Ajax and is willing to force a move
* The transfer would see him link back up with former manager Erik ten Hag
* The 24-year-old could refuse to train and wants an agreement in next 24 hours

Manchester United target Lisandro Martinez is reportedly ready to force his way out of Ajax to seal a move to Old Trafford.

With the Dutch champions making it clear United will need to increase their current offer, the player is willing to take matters into his own hands in an effort to link up with former manager Erik ten Hag.

According to The Mirror, Ajax players believe Martinez is 'willing to go to war' with the club to get his move, with the 24-year-old losing patience with the Amsterdam-based side.

He could reportedly be willing to refuse to train in order to help push the move through, with it looking ever more likely he won't play for Ajax again.

Lisandro Martinez is reportedly ready to force a move to Manchester United this summer. Ajax star Martinez is looking to link up with Erik ten Hag, who coached the defender at the Dutch side

Ajax had hoped to trigger a bidding war between United and Arsenal, who are also interested in Martinez, but the defender has made it clear he wants to reconcile with ten Hag - with who he enjoyed plenty of success in Holland - in Manchester, and is pushing for a deal to be agreed in the next 48 hours.

It is believed Ten Hag is urging United officials to agree a deal soon, believing Martinez to be a key cog in his revolution along with Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag is keen for both players to join United on their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia as soon as possible, but it will certainly be after they face Liverpool in Thailand on Tuesday.

Sportsmail reported last week that the Red Devils had lodged a £43million bid for the Argentine star, with Ajax weighing up the offer and waiting to see the Gunners would follow up with their own offer.

Since making his debut in 2019, Martinez has made 105 appearances for Ajax. He is also a full Argentine international.

Despite being just 5'9 in height, he would likely immediately become United's first choice at centre back after their defensive struggles last season.

Tyrell Malacia is United's only signing so far this summer, but a deal for Christian Eriksen is close.

The Red Devils have also been offered the chance to sign free agent Thomas Strakosha.

Manchester United could complete Lisandro Martinez deal as early as TODAY… after a £46m fee was finally agreed with Ajax for the 5ft 9in centre back with help from Edwin van der Sar

* Manchester United are closing on the £46m signing of Ajax's Lisandro Martinez
* Martinez has been a major target for both Manchester United and Arsenal
* But United and new boss Erik ten Hag have won the race for Martinez
* The deal could be announced as early as Thursday after Edwin van der Sar's help

Manchester United are closing on the £46million signing of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, with the deal expected to be completed on Thursday.

Talks have been moving in the right direction through Wednesday, with the Dutch club's CEO and former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar helping negotiations along.

Ajax had rejected United's offer from last week of £42.5m including add-ons but are willing to accept a new proposal following lengthy talks on Wednesday and have already identified Lisandro's potential replacement in Mykola Matvienko from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Argentina international Lisandro made it clear to the Ajax board that he wished to leave once he became aware of interest from Arsenal then United. He has a strong relationship with United coach Erik ten Hag and the two have spoken in recent weeks.

Lisandro was Ajax's player of the year last season as Ten Hag delivered the Dutch league title prior to his departure. Indeed, the 23-year-old defender, whose idol is former United defender Gabriel Heinze, has won three league titles since joining in 2019 from Defensa y Justicia.

Though not the tallest centre-back at just 5ft 9ins, Lisandro reads the game well, is good in one-on-one situations and an astute passer of the ball. A fans' favourite in Amsterdam, he can play at centre-back, left-back and holding midfield where former United defender Jaap Stam believes he could excel.

'What’s important is that a defender has cleverness,' said Stam. 'Lisandro Martinez has developed that. In England, there are a lot of fast attackers who are merciless in counters. So what is important is that a defender is smart and clever.

'But because Martinez is comfortable on the ball he can also play in front of the defence. And I don’t rule out that ten Hag will use him there.'

United have six senior defenders on their books and hope to sell up to three with Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly the most likely.

Manchester United are closing on the £46million signing of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez. A move to United will see the Argentine reunite with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag

Bailly has interest from Napoli but was impressive against Liverpool in Tuesday's friendly and has indicated he wants to fight for his place.

The 28-year-old has wanted to leave in recent seasons as he believed he was never given a fair chance though untimely injuries hindered his progress.

United have flown 19-year-old Will Fish to Melbourne for the second leg of the tour to provide cover at centre-half as Tuanzebe has returned home and full-back Alex Telles was forced to play in central defence against Liverpool.

Meanwhile, United's efforts to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona continue to drag despite John Murtough and Richard Arnold meeting Barca executives this week.

The Holland midfielder and his representatives want the £17m plus he is owed in wages by Barca which he agreed to defer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barcelona planned to repay the money over his contract, which runs to 2026, but a transfer would mean full repayment now.

United are hoping to complete a deal for Christian Eriksen by the end of this week and have held talks with Ajax over Antony but the winger’s £68m valuation is prohibitive.

United continue to insist Ronaldo is not leaving but it is still no clearer if he will join the squad on the Australian leg of their tour.

Default Re: Lisandro Martinez

Why Erik ten Hag is DESPERATE to sign Lisandro Martinez: The Ajax star is renowned for his ball-playing skills and has earned the nickname the 'Argentine Butcher' with his ferocious displays

* Lisandro Martinez is on the verge of joining Manchester United from Ajax
* United appear to have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the Argentine
* The 24-year-old has forged a solid reputation during his time in Holland
He is known for starting attacks from the back and for his ball-playing ability

Manchester United look to be finally getting their man as a deal for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez has moved a step closer.

United appear to have a clear path to landing the 24-year-old after Arsenal cooled their interest in the Argentine, with Ajax accepting the Old Trafford club's £46million offer.

Martinez is set to be reunited with Erik ten Hag and could become United's third signing of a frustrating and protracted transfer window so far.

The defender is one of his former manager's top targets and could bolster a United backline that shipped more goals than relegated Burnley in the Premier League last season.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at Martinez, his style of play and why the new United boss has tried so desperately to sign him.

Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez appears to be heading to Manchester United from Ajax. Martinez, who worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is set to reunite with the Dutchman

How did he get here?

Born in the Argentinian city of Gualeguay, Martinez began playing for Newell's Old Boys, the iconic side where Lionel Messi shot to fame.

He grew up idolising his countryman Gabriel Heinze - who played for Manchester United, the club who are chasing his signature.

Martinez started grabbing the attention of clubs around Europe due to his confidence and ability as a left-sided ball-playing central defender.

The Argentine looks up to counterpart and former United defender Gabriel Heinze

Ajax quickly began to perk their heads up after he began to impress for new club Defensa y Justicia.

During three years in Holland, he has forged a reputation for his fearsome displays and tenacity to win the ball in the air and on the ground, earning the nickname 'The Argentine Butcher'.

Martinez has made 118 appearances for Ajax, including 19 in the Champions League. He played in 36 games in the Dutch club's title-winning season despite missing the final seven matches through injury.

The diminutive defender has also been capped seven times by Argentina and will hope to be included in the South American side's squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Why do United - and Arsenal - want him?

Martinez is renowned for his ball-playing abilities and has been described as one of the best in the Eredivisie.

He is great with the ball at his feet and regularly begins attacks from the back for Ajax with his excellent passing.

Martinez is widely regarded as an excellent ball-playing defender and starts attacks from the back. Ten Hag wants to add Martinez, who can play in a number of positions, to his United squad

Despite his stature - he is 5ft 9in (or 175cm) and will be the shortest centre-back in the Premier League if he completes his move to Old Trafford - he is a dominant presence in the air.

Martinez is not afraid to get stuck in - in fact, he loves a challenge - is capable of playing in either a back three or a back four and has decent pace to boot.

His versatility is another plus point. Martinez featured predominantly as a left-sided centre-back under Ten Hag but has past experience at both left-back and in defensive midfield.

Ten Hag is well-versed in Martinez's strengths but he will also know the Argentine could take time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Where would he fit in at United?

United already have enough centre-backs to fill more than half of a starting XI.

Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are all on their books, although the latter of whom looks to be heading out of the Old Trafford exit door.

It is debatable whether Martinez gets into Ten Hag's side ahead of Maguire and Varane, but might the Dutchman have given a hint as to where he sees the Argentine in his team?

Speaking to the media after arriving in Thailand on Monday, Ten Hag said the club were still looking for 'midfielders and offensive players' and made no mention of defenders, fuelling suggestions he may deploy Martinez as a central defensive midfielder - a position United have long needed to strengthen.

He will have to battle for his place if he is being signed as a centre-back.

Varane endured an injury-hit first season at United but impressed when he was fit, while Ten Hag has confirmed Maguire, who endured a dismal campaign last term, will remain as captain, which hardly suggests he will drop the beleaguered England international.

United need to shift defenders irrespective of Martinez's arrival, with Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe the most likely to be moved on.

But the Argentine's flexibility, coupled with his previous relationship with Ten Hag, could count in his favour.

What is his current situation?

Martinez has told Ajax he wants the move and the Dutch giants appear to have finally relented.

Sportsmail reported on Wednesday that United had - eventually - made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the 24-year-old.

United had tabled a fresh £43m offer earlier this month and Arsenal will now not be matching that bid after the Gunners chose to focus their attention elsewhere.

Indeed, a final offer of £45m from United will be enough to get Martinez to Manchester.

Martinez only signed a contract extension through to 2025 in October but has informed his club that he sees his immediate future away from Ajax.

He is seemingly destined for the Premier League and United will hope to complete the signing in the coming days.

Manchester United FINALLY reach an agreement with Ajax over the structure of £46m deal to sign Lisandro Martinez… with the defender set to link up with former boss Erik ten Hag and his new team-mates in Australia

* Lisandro Martinez missed Ajax training as Man United ironed out deal structure
* He made it clear to Ajax he wanted to fulfil dream of moving to Premier League
* Ajax were initially reluctant to sell the player who was club's player of the year
* Martinez intervened when it became clear United were serious in their pursuit

Manchester United have reached agreement with Ajax for defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine missed training on Thursday as the clubs ironed out the structure of payments on the £46million transfer and he is now ready to link up with his new team mates in Australia.

Lisandro had made it clear to Ajax that he wanted to fulfil his dream of moving to the Premier League this summer and will reunite with his former boss Erik ten Hag with whom he has a strong bond.

United director of football John Murtough and chief executive Richard Arnold held extensive talks with Ajax counterparts Edwin van der Sar, Gerry Hamstra and Klaas Jan Huntelaar on Wednesday before returning to Manchester. Further talks followed on Thursday to iron out finer details and a deal is now in place.

Man United finally strike a £55m deal with Ajax for defender Lisandro Martinez... with the Argentine to sign a £120,000-a-week contract as Erik ten Hag makes his third summer signing

* Manchester United have come to an agreement with Ajax for Lisandro Martinez
* The central defender will end up costing them £55.3m, including add-ons
* Martinez is set to sign a five-year contract worth £120,000-per-week
* He is United's third summer signing after Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen

Manchester United have confirmed that the club have reached an agreement with Ajax over a £55.3million deal for Lisandro Martinez.

The 24-year-old Argentina centre-back, who flew into the UK on Friday to complete the transfer, still needs to undergo a medical and obtain a visa.

However, United don't anticipate any problems and the deal is expected go through in the coming days.

United will pay an initial £46.8m plus £8.5m in add-ons, making Martinez the second most expensive defender in the club's history after Harry Maguire.

Lisandro Martinez is heading for Old Trafford after Man United and Ajax reached an agreement

He will sign a five-year contract with the option of a one-year extension worth £120,000-a-week.

The two clubs formally announced confirmation on Sunday that a fee had been agreed so Ajax could inform the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

A club statement from United read: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez, subject to medical, to player terms being finalised, and to UK visa requirements.'

Martinez becomes United's third signing of the summer after Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

He is set to be reunited with Erik ten Hag after the pair worked together at Ajax. Martinez is now the second most expensive defender in United's history behind Harry Maguire

He played under new United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax after moving from South America in 2019, winning two Eredivisie titles and the Dutch Cup during his three-year stay in Amsterdam.

United moved for him after missing out on signing his Ajax team-mate Jurrien Timber earlier this summer.

The Dutchman opted to stay in Amsterdam due to having concerns about his playing time heading into this year's World Cup.

Martinez quickly became the Red Devils' main target, although they initially faced competition for his signature from Arsenal.

However, United quickly moved ahead of the Gunners in the race, and when Martinez informed Ajax that he wanted to move to the Premier League club it seemed like only a matter of time before he got his wish.

Martinez will join a pool of four senior centre-backs at Old Trafford that includes Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

He is the only left-footed player out of that quartet, which could add greater balance to Ten Hag's back line.

United will listen to offers for Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe.

Erik ten Hag lauds Lisandro Martinez as a 'warrior' and believes Manchester United fans 'will admire him' ahead of the defender's imminent £55.3m arrival from Ajax

* United boss also believes fans will 'admire' Martinez due to his 'fighting spirit'
* The Argentinian and Christian Eriksen both will not join the tour of Australia

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has described Lisandro Martinez as a 'warrior' ahead of the defender's imminent arrival.

The Red Devils announced on Sunday they reached a deal worth £55.3million with Ajax for the Argentinian.

Ten Hag, who managed Martinez during his time in charge of the Dutch side, has heaped praise on the player and believes United fans will take to him well due to his 'attitude and fighting spirit'.

Speaking to the club's official website, Ten Hag said: 'He's a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit.

'He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that.

'But also, he's also skilful and he can deal with the ball and he's left-footed.'

On adjusting to the Premier League, Ten Hag added: 'I think it's important, yeah. I think the Premier League is high intensity, lots of challenges. We need such players [with fighting spirit].

Lisandro Martinez is heading for Old Trafford after Man United and Ajax reached an agreement. Erik ten Hag has described the defender as a 'warrior' and believes United fans will

'Certain ideas, he knows them. That is an advantage, clearly.

'But also he has to adapt, to a new country, a new club, new team-mates. So also a lot of things will be different.'

Martinez flew into the UK on Friday and the deal is subject to him passing a medical and obtaining a visa, though United don't anticipate any problems.

He will become the club's third summer signing after Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen. The Danish playmaker and Martinez will both not join United's tour of Australia though, as confirmed by Ten Hag.

'Unfortunately we cannot have them here in the tour, because at the moment they arrive here we will fly back. So that doesn't make sense,' the United boss said.

'We cannot wait to involve them in our squad and the fans also cannot wait.

'Every year it's the same as a trainer: you want your squad complete as soon as possible. But also fans look forward to new players and what is the squad and what they can contribute and they want an identification.'

Default Re: Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United finally confirm the £55m signing of Lisandro Martinez as Erik ten Hag raids his old club Ajax to land the 'Butcher of Amsterdam' - and pile more pressure on captain Harry Maguire

* Lisandro Martinez has finally completed £55million move to Manchester United
* United had agreed a deal with Ajax earlier in July as they targeted new defender
* Argentina international has penned a five-year deal worth £120,000 per week
* Martinez expected to become first choice in defence alongside Harry Maguire

Manchester United have completed the £55million move of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax to continue their summer rebuild under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag had targeted a new centre-back in this transfer window and worked with the Argentina international in his previous three seasons at Ajax.

United and Ajax quickly came to an agreement over the £55m fee earlier in July and Martinez has signed a five-year deal worth £120,000 a week with an option for an extra year.

United will pay an initial £46.8m plus £8.5m in add-ons, making Martinez the second most expensive defender in the club's history after Harry Maguire.

Martinez described joining the Red Devils as an honour and that he believes United can become a major force under Ten Hag.

'It's an honour to join this great football club,' he said. 'I've worked so hard to get to this moment and now that I'm here I'm going to push myself even further.

'I've been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that's what I want to continue at Manchester United. There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that under this manager and coaches, and together with my new team-mates, we can do it.

'I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me. I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do that.'

A club statement from United read: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez, subject to medical, to player terms being finalised, and to UK visa requirements.'

Martinez's announcement comes after the defender was spotted arriving at the club's Carrington training ground on Tuesday, having been driven in by fellow summer signing Christian Eriksen in a 4x4 Audi.

The previous evening, Martinez had also been spotted in Manchester City centre at the Italian restaurant Don Giovanni along with his girlfriend Muri Lopez and has been staying at the nearby five-star Lowry Hotel.

Martinez arrives from Ajax where he spent three years playing under Erik ten Hag. Martinez has previously been one of Ten Hag's trusted stars in three years at Ajax. The Argentina international is now expected to become a key first team star at Old Trafford. Ten Hag will hope Martinez can help plug one of the top 10's leakiest defences last term

Martinez is the club's third summer signing, following the capture of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord earlier in July, while playmaker Christian Eriksen arrived from Brentford following the expiry of his six-month deal.

Ten Hag will hope Martinez can help improve a defence that, with 57 goals, conceded the second most inside the top 10 of the Premier League last season.

The 24-year-old arrives with huge promise of helping United get back to winning ways following a torrid campaign from the Red Devils last term where they scraped to sixth place and a Europa League spot under interim manager Ralf Rangnick following the early season sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskajer.

Last season Martinez won Ajax's Player of the Year award and could be expected to feature as first choice alongside club captain Maguire this term - but with the likes of Raphael Varane also available to Ten Hag, the new signing's presence could put pressure on the England defender to justify his place given his poor form in recent months.

The move for Martinez comes after Ten Hag missed out on signing another Ajax star in Jurrien Timber, who opted to stay with the Dutch champions to strengthen his chances of securing playing time ahead of Holland's World Cup campaign in Qatar this winter.

Ten Hag has also suffered another transfer blow, with Ajax fighting to keep hold of Antony.

Ajax have dramatically upped their asking price for the in-demand winger in a bid to stave off interest from United.

Ten Hag is interested in bringing the Brazilian star to Old Trafford this summer but the Dutch side have raised their fee demand from £68m to £84m to underline he is not for sale.

Arsenal had also been interested in Martinez but United acted quickly to nail down the defender, who can also play in midfield, once his interest in playing in the Premier League became known.

Although United are not short of centre-backs, Martinez, whose tough physical approach has seen him pick up the nickname Butcher of Amsterdam', has a left-footed style making him unique to a pool of defenders that also include Varane, Victor Lindelof and Maguire, who will be under pressure to deliver after a poor campaign last season.

In addition, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe also remain on the books at Old Trafford but it is understood the club are ready to listen to offers for the trio.

'We need a hell of a lot more': Man United fans hail 'true warrior' Lisandro Martinez after his £55m transfer from Ajax but call on club chiefs to keep splashing the cash to overhaul their failing squad

* Manchester United announced the £55million signing of Lisandro Martinez
* The Argentinian becomes Manchester United's third summer signing
* Supporters praised the defender's arrival on social media but demanded more
* Martinez will link up with his team-mates ahead of the start of the season

Lisandro Martinez has finally been unveiled as a Manchester United player after the central defender completed his £55million move from Ajax.

United fans reacting on social media shared their delight after Erik ten Hag secured his third summer signing of the transfer window.

Having already brought Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen to the club, Martinez becomes Ten Hag's first big-money signing as the famous club seek to bounce back after a disastrous end to last season.

United have been slow in the transfer market compared to some of their league rivals, but have been steadily increasing the tempo in their transfer dealings as the Premier League season gets underway in 10 days time.

Martinez was originally targeted by Arsenal but quickly chose the Manchester club as his preferred option once Ten Hag showed interest in his former player.

The Old Trafford outfit has been crying out for defensive reinforcements after the club finished the previous season with a zero-goal difference marking the worst Premier League season in the club's history.

However, fans rejoiced on social media after Manchester United unveiled Martinez as their newest star signing on Wednesday.

One fan took to Twitter to share his delight, claiming Martinez was 'the kind of player that will die for you and that'll do anything to win. The exact kind of mentality we need within the club.'

Another user clearly ecstatic with the news joked that Martinez is now 'officially the best defender in the premier league'.

However despite his arrival, many supporters refused to get carried away, insisting that more new signings are needed after United missed out on Champions League qualification last season.

One United fan insisted the club still 'need a hell of a lot more', while those sentiments were echoed by a user who said, 'great signing but we need more players.'

Nicknamed the 'butcher of Amsterdam' for his hard-hitting defending, some supporters simply reacted to the news wishing Martinez a warm welcome by calling the defender a 'great signing and a true warrior on the pitch.'

Martinez started his career in his homeland of Argentina before joining Ajax in 2019. He quickly became a fan favourite helping the Dutch champions to two Eredevise league titles along with helping Argentina lift the Copa America in 2021.

The versatile defender was crowned Ajax's player of the year last season and will rival Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane for a place in Manchester United's starting defence.

MARTINEZ’S SQUAD NUMBER

New signing Lisandro Martinez’s Manchester United squad number can now be revealed.

The Argentina international, who completed his move from Ajax on Wednesday, will sport the no.6 on the back of his shirt this season.

And United fans could get a first glimpse of Martinez in action with his fresh jersey this weekend, with United taking on Atletico Madrid on Saturday and Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Prior to becoming a Red, Martinez wore the no.21 shirt during his three years at Ajax.

When joining the Amsterdam club in the summer of 2019, the no.6 – whether it was his preference or not – was actually occupied by his now-United team-mate Donny van de Beek, before former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen took it upon Donny’s move to Manchester.

Martinez has previously had the no.6 while at Defensa y Justicia, along with the no.24. At first club Newell’s Old Boys, he wore 14.

United revealed that Martinez will follow Paul Pogba in wearing the club's No 6 shirt

The 24-year-old is set to become the eighth permanent holder of the jersey at United since squad numbers were introduced in 1993/94.

Gary Pallister was the first to don the number on a regular basis for United and did so right up until his departure in 1998.

From one United legend to another, Jaap Stam then inherited the digit in that summer and wore it for four seasons before Laurent Blanc and Rio Ferdinand both sported it for a season each.

Wes Brown is the longest permanent possessor of the shirt, wearing it between 2003 and 2011, while more recently Jonny Evans and Paul Pogba have had it on their United kits for four and six years respectively.

It is also worth noting that Mike Phelan has worn the no.6 for United since 1993, although not on a permanent basis.

Nani too has sported the number in that time, during the 2008 Manchester derby at Old Trafford in which both sides had special memorial kits as the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster was commemorated.
