Jose Mourinho slams 'ridiculous' defending after Manchester United's horror start in Tottenham defeat: 'On this occasion we were very bad'

* Tottenham secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday
* United conceded within 11 seconds of kick off courtesy of Christian Eriksen
* Phil Jones followed up Spurs' opener with an own goal after 28 minutes
* Manager Jose Mourinho was raging at the manner in which his side conceded
* Mourinho described the two goals conceded by United as 'ridiculous'

Jose Mourinho fumed at his team's 'ridiculous' defending last night after Manchester United conceded inside just 11 seconds at Wembley.

United were left shell-shocked by Christian Eriksen's quick opener - the fastest Premier League goal conceded by the Red Devils - and failed to recover as Tottenham secured a vital victory.

Spurs added a second courtesy of Phil Jones' comical 28th minute own goal and Mourinho blasted his team for their shocking start to the game, saying: 'I don't think it's normal to concede a goal like we did after 15 seconds.

'Straight from kick off is ridiculous. That goal after a few seconds has a big influence in the game because Tottenham can play the way they like to play.

'Both goals were ridiculous goals. The first goal is an accumulation of mistakes in spite of the fact that everything happened so fast.

'My players have watched the Tottenham kick-off many, many times.

Jose Mourinho couldn't believe his eyes as Manchester United were beaten by Tottenham. Mourinho claimed his side conceded two 'ridiculous' goals in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat

'It was a really, really bad goal. After the first goal the team had a good reaction - we were there and tried to create.

'The second goal is not ridiculous but unlucky. Mentally kills the team. A team to win matches needs to score goals and also defend well - on this occasion we were very bad.'

Mourinho also insisted a knee injury was the reason why he substituted Marouane Fellaini just seven minutes after bringing him off the bench.

The Belgian looked less than happy with being replaced, but Mourinho said: 'He was injured. Continually he has the same injury - the lateral (knee) ligament.'

Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino branded his team's performance one of their best at Wembley this season.

'The performance was great, I'm so pleased with that,' said the Argentine.

'I want to congratulate our players. It was one of the best here at Wembley.

'We had some good performances here; Real Madrid, Liverpool and now tonight.

'We dominated the game, got a clean sheet and deserved the result against Manchester United.

'We deserve a lot of praise but the most important thing now is to keep consistent.'

On his side's lightening start, Pochettino added: 'We always try to be aggressive from the beginning.

'Our aim is to be focused from the beginning. You can win a game if you're ready to fight. It was massive to be up early in the game.

Three more points puts us in a very good position to fight for the top four. I'm sure new signing Lucas Moura enjoyed that a lot.'

Disektor Goalkepeer kita aman. Tengah & Depan hanya butuh konektivitas antar pemaen karena menurut saya kualitas skuad yg dimiliki oleh Mou sdh sama dengan rival-rival yang lain, mungkin hanya perlu para punggawa Man.United khusus nya pemaen tengah mau menjadi sosok pelayan bagi striker-striker di depan daripada mendahulukan ego utk mencetak skor. Man.United merindukan sosok seperti Giggs, Beckham, Scholes yang mendahulukan kemenangan tim dengan memanjakan passing menawan utk para penyerang nya walau kualitas Finishing pemaen ini pun sangat lah luar biasa. Pemaen-pemaen inilah layaknya pemaen laen yg msh ada di sosok seperti Ozil, Modric, Kroos, Perisic. Gw harap musim depan Mou merekrut Solid Defender or Strong Defender

Manchester United have proved Roy Keane wrong this season, says Ashley Young as he hails his team's 'fantastic' defensive record

* Roy Keane predicted that Manchester United would struggle defensively
* The former United midfielder said Ashley Young doesn't work in a back four
* Jose Mourinho's team have the best defensive record in the Premier League

Ashley Young believes Manchester United have proved Roy Keane wrong with their defensive record this season.

Keane criticised United - and Young in particular - after Jose Mourinho’s side suffered a second Premier League defeat in three games at Newcastle nine days ago.

Young has been converted from a winger into a wing-back for United in recent seasons, and former Old Trafford favourite Keane said: ‘I’ve always thought with Ashley Young in your back-four, you are going to struggle.

Ashley Young believes Man United have proved Roy Keane wrong with their defensive record. Former United midfielder Keane criticised United - and Young in particular - earlier this month

‘They haven’t sorted out the defensive problems they have had over the last few years and that will continue.’

However, United have the best defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded one less goal than Manchester City, and the FA Cup win at Huddersfield last weekend brought their 24th clean sheet this season.

Young said: ‘It’s fantastic. I think a lot has been said about defenders - a lot was said last week - and it’s one of those things. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion.

‘Keep getting clean sheets and hopefully we can chip in with goals as well as the front boys.’

United will be aiming to put up another strong defensive performance in Spain on Wednesday night when they face Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Last season’s Europa League winners are not among the favourites, but Young sees no reason why United shouldn’t go for glory.

Jose Mourinho's team have the best defensive record in the Premier League

‘Of course,’ he added. ‘You don’t enter a competition not to win it. That’s what we will be looking to do and take each game as it comes.

‘The next one is against Sevilla. That’s a tough away game but we just have to concentrate on ourselves.

‘We’re involved in the FA Cup, Champions League, we can still win the league. We know the points difference, but never say never. So we just need to keep getting points and keep progressing and hopefully win a trophy.

‘It’s a massive week. We had to get ourselves back to winning ways after last weekend (at Newcastle). We can’t look too far ahead. Obviously we know we have got Chelsea coming up and Sevilla is the next game and that’s where our thoughts are.’

Default Re: United defender under Mourinho

Eric Bailly's lack of game-time is down to team-mates fighting for World Cup places, admits Jose Mourinho: 'Rojo, Lindelof, Jones, Smalling, all of them are wishing to make the squad'

* The much-anticipated 2018 World Cup in Russia is now just a few weeks away
* Manchester United players are fighting for their places in respective squads
* Jose Mourinho says Eric Bailly's absence is partly down to his side missing out
* Mourinho used Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof as examples of players fighting for a place in their country's squads for Russia

Eric Bailly has had to take a back seat at Manchester United to allow team-mates to press their World Cup claims, Jose Mourinho has revealed.

The Ivory Coast defender has been left out of three of the last four United squads after returning to action in February following ankle surgery.

It's a surprise considering Bailly has established himself as Mourinho's first-choice centre back since arriving from Villarreal for £30million in the summer of 2016, and has led to speculation this week that he has fallen out of favour with his manager.

However, Mourinho denied there is any problem with the player and put Bailly's omission down to the fact that Ivory Coast are not at the World Cup in Russia this summer.

The United boss claimed he is showing his softer side by helping Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof secure a place in the England, Argentina and Sweden squads respectively.

Jose Mourinho admits he is giving those with a World Cup shot more of a chance at United. Eric Bailly (right) has found game-time hard to come by - and Ivory Coast failed to qualify

'There's no situation,' said Mourinho. 'He is fine, no injury. He is one of our five central defenders and, honestly, my work is not about World Cups and preparing players for the World Cup or giving chances to players at the World Cup.

'But he's the only central defender whose country is not in the World Cup, so if I have to make a kind of more emotional, effective choice to try to help my players, he's the one I'm not going to help until the end of the season.

Chris Smalling, though, is playing regularly as he fights for a spot in the final England squad

Victor Lindelof is another in Bailly's position who has ambitions of going to the World Cup

'Rojo, Lindelof, Jones, Smalling, all of them are wishing to make the squad for the World Cup and Eric is not under that pressure.

'I try not to (make those sentimental decisions). I try to be a good team manager and that means being a bit cold, a bit selfish.

'But I'm not as bad as that, and I still have space for a little bit of feelings, so when I look to the other four central defenders fighting for a position in the World Cup I am giving less to Eric.'

Manchester United want to sign one of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Leonardo Bonucci to strengthen centre back resources

* Manchester United want to secure a deal for a new centre back
* Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Leonardo Bonucci are all targets
* United must sell one of their existing centre backs before pursuing a deal
* Marcos Rojo, who has fallen down the pecking order, could depart

Jose Mourinho will have to sell one of his centre backs before Manchester United can pursue any move for England World Cup star Harry Maguire.

United would have to pay up to £65million for the Leicester City defender whose value has rocketed following his performances in Russia.

But Mourinho has been told he must offload one of Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones or Victor Lindelof to make room for a new central defender.

Manchester United want to sign Leicester's Harry Maguire but must sell a centre back first

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is also being considered as an option by United

AC Milan's experienced Italy international Leonardo Bonucci is being monitored by United

Rojo may be the most viable option after attracting strong interest from a Premier League rival.

The Argentina defender, who has yet to join United's tour of the US after the World Cup, has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford since returning from a cruciate ligament injury in November.

Bailly also fell out of favour with Mourinho towards the end of last season, while Smalling, Jones and Lindelof could be sold.

Mourinho wants a combative, commanding centre back in the John Terry mould and doesn't feel that any of his current squad have the attributes required.

Marcos Rojo, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, is a candidate to depart

Quote:

United have drawn up a list of targets, headed by Maguire that also includes Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Leonardo Bonucci of AC Milan.

Spurs have not heard from United since they inquired about Alderweireld in May, while Bonucci could face Mourinho's side in an International Champions Cup game in Los Angeles later this week.

United expressed an interest in Maguire before the World Cup, but his stock has risen considerably after he emerged as one of England's best players at the tournament with his fearless approach.

The 25-year-old only cost Leicester £17m from relegated Hull City last summer, but he is now valued at four times that figure after an excellent first season at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester are desperate to keep Maguire and are ready to offer him a new contract in the region of £80,000-a-week.

But they would have to consider a huge bid from United before the transfer window closes on August 9.

Mourinho has switched his attention to central defence after deciding that £19m signing Diogo Dalot's ability to play on both flanks gives United cover in the full back positions. He has not ruled out signing another winger and Ivan Perisic's performances for Croatia at the World Cup were a reminder of why United tried to sign him from Inter Milan a year ago.

'Bailly doesn't know if he's in New York or New Year... the centre backs melted and you can't do that in the Premier League': Gary Neville and Graeme Souness lay into United's defence after Brighton horror show

* Graeme Souness slammed Manchester United's first-half showing at Brighton
* The former Liverpool captain suggested the Ivorian was being outplayed
* Bailly and Victor Lindelof struggled to cope with the physicality of Glenn Murray
* Sportsmail columnist Jamie Redknapp also criticised United's defensive play

Gary Neville accused Manchester United’s defenders of ‘melting’ against Brighton and questioned his old club’s summer transfer strategy.

Fellow TV pundit Graeme Souness was just as scathing after United were totally out-played and out-fought by Brighton.

‘The centre backs melted and you can’t do that in the Premier League,’ former United defender Neville said on Sky Sports.

Eric Bailly (right) and Victor Lindelof came in for fierce criticism by Sky Sports pundits. Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp slammed Manchester United's performance at Brighton

‘When Manchester United are so publicly in the transfer window looking for defenders, what belief does that give them?

‘They know they’re on borrowed time and I have to say (Eric) Bailly and (Victor) Lindelof were poor. They are the ones Jose has signed.

‘It has been poor recruitment. That back four aren’t good enough to win the title. The five centre backs they’ve got are second centre backs. They’re not authoritative or leaders.’

Souness’ appraisal was just as withering, saying: ‘Bailly kicks it out of play, he doesn’t know where he is and his head has gone at this time.

‘He’s in trouble here today. He doesn’t know if he’s in New York or New Year. United have been weak, losing individual battles.

‘(Andreas) Perreira and Fred, what kind of midfield players are they? They’re just happy to keep possession and go square all the time.

‘Prior to Fergie going to United, this is the most average group of players I’ve ever seen at the club.

Redknapp blamed David De Gea's distribution as the catalyst for Bailly giving away a penalty. Souness called United 'the most average group I've seen since Sir Alex Ferguson took over'

‘They’ve got absolutely nothing about them. They’ve got no presence or anything and there just doesn’t seem to be any leaders out their pointing fingers.

‘They look like a team with zero confidence, dispirited. Top teams have two or three angry men, they get upset very quickly. I never saw one United player like that.’

Liverpool legend Souness also had his say on the latest spat between Jose Mourinho and Manchester City.

Mourinho said City ‘couldn’t buy class’ when asked about the fly-on-the-wall documentary All or Nothing which captures Pep Guardiola’s side in last year’s title-winning season.

But Souness accused Mourinho of hypocrisy, saying: ‘I think it’s rich coming from Jose, talking about class. I am specifically thinking of some of the spats with Arsene Wenger that weren’t very classy. But I think it’s where we are, we’re in a different media age.’

The former Scotland midfielder did praise Paul Pogba for questioning United’s attitude, adding: ‘Fair play to Pogba. He’s come out and admitted he wasn’t up to it.

‘Football has never changed too much for me. I think modern players go out there with a head full of tactics and you forget the basics of football. Get to the ball first, be aggressive, put your foot on the ball and then you’ve got a chance if you do that. United started like they were waiting to see what Brighton were going to do.

‘This is Manchester United, they should be setting the tempo and giving Brighton a tough afternoon.

‘They made everyone nervous, handed the initiative to Brighton and from there, there was only going to be one winner.

‘We saw City earlier, pick 11 players from both squads and how many United players get into that team?’

Mourinho asked in his press conference if he knows his best back four:

He replied "No."

Secara kuantitas emang banyak, tapi secara kualitas rata2 semua.

Bailly disebut2 paling potensial, tapi dia punya kelemahan di bola atas dan agresifitasnya yg kadang muncul diwaktu yang salah.

Jones, buat marking sih paling bagus. Hanya bola2 atasnya buruk dan catatan cederanya yang parah.

Lindelof paling nyaman jadi ball playing defender meski nggak nyaman2 banget. Tapi dia terlalu lemah lembut untuk dibandingkan dengan Ferdinand. Kemampuan bola atasnya ya 11/12 sama yang di atas2.

Rojo, CB paling terbawah. Nggak ada yg spesial kecuali dia kidal.

Smalling bisa dibilang terbaik dari yang rata2. Bola atas lumayan meski tidak dominan. Catatan cederanya pun jauh lebih baik dr Jones

Tau gini sekalian beli VVD aja dibanding beli Bailly + Lindelof. 2 bek seharga 1 bek, skillnya pun 1 bek setara 2 bek.
