'This guy is made for Manchester United': Peter Schmeichel hails £80m defender Harry Maguire and insists knew he would make it after watching his debut for Leicester

* Harry Maguire impressed in Manchester United's 4-0 win over Chelsea
* Peter Schmeichel was convinced by his potential after he joined Leicester
* Maguire played in front of his son, Kasper, in two years at King Power Stadium

Peter Schmeichel was convinced Harry Maguire was 'made for Manchester United' after watching his debut for Leicester two years ago.

The £80m centre-back impressed in the 4-0 win over Chelsea on his Old Trafford debut on Sunday.

And club legend Schmeichel has been a fan since first watching him play in front of his son, Kasper, at the King Power Stadium.

Peter Schmeichel knew Maguire was made for United after watching his Leicester debut. Maguire played in front of Schmeichel's son, Kasper, during his days at Leicester

'I have to say when I saw Harry the first time for Leicester when he played his first game he intrigued me straight away', he told The Mirror.

'A couple of games in I am thinking, "This guy is made for Manchester United". He is not fazed about anything.

'Everyone will agree in the World Cup he played every game, just got on with it and was arguably was one of the best players in the English team.

'He brings all that and an incredible ability to bring the ball forward. It is something you either have or don't have and very few centre halves have that ability.'

Maguire will next be in action for United when they travel to Wolves on Monday night.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

WHY MAGUIRE IS ALREADY A GREAT INFLUENCE

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emphasised the importance of having a level-headed figure like Harry Maguire in his Manchester United squad.

The defender only completed his move from Leicester City at the start of last week and was a composed presence at the back alongside Victor Lindelof when making his debut a few days later, in last Sunday’s 4-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Ahead of Monday’s trip to Wolves, the boss spoke glowingly of his recent recruit and described the significance of having a character like his within the group.

“He’s very level-headed,” Ole told reporters in Friday’s press conference at the Aon Training Complex. “He's just as composed off the pitch as he is on the pitch.

“He's experienced, he's a big presence around the place, he's smiling and he's a personality that you like to have around.

“To have a cool head at the back is important. The defenders who are level headed and not too emotionally affected are great to have, for a manager and for a team.

“Harry's only been here for a little bit more than a week and he's been very good to have around [the club].”

'WE WILL PLAY BETTER WITH A GOOD FOUNDATION'

Maguire’s arrival, added to the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, has obviously bolstered Ole's defensive options and the boss feels his midfielders and forwards could also benefit if he's able to select a solid back four.

When asked if Fred could be among the beneficiaries, Solskjaer replied: “Your team will always play better if you're settled, have a good foundation and you’re not conceding goals.

“I think the good teams I played in always had a strong base with the keeper and a settled back line. We hope to provide that for our attackers and midfielders, including Fred, of course.”

Fred missed part of our pre-season campaign after he was granted time off by Ole to get married, but the Brazilian midfielder is back in the fold now and could feature against Wolves - the opponents on the receiving end of his first United goal.

“We believe that he's going to have a big season,” the boss added.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

WHY HARRY MAGUIRE WAS BORN FOR THIS CLUB

As weeks go, securing the move you had long dreamt of, adjusting to life at your new club, going straight into the starting XI and making your debut against one of the Premier League’s leading sides marks out an eventful few days.

For Harry Maguire, however, there was nary even a raised eyebrow. The England international simply took everything in his stride, slotted into his new surroundings off the field and walked away with Sky Sports’ Man of the Match award after a flawless display as United ran out 4-0 winners against Chelsea.

“It’s been seamless,” says Reds goalkeeper Lee Grant of his new team-mate. “Harry has definitely slotted straight in, in terms of the social side and in terms of his mentality and attitude, which has been first class.

“The most important thing, though, is his quality and he was able to show that against Chelsea. We could all see he is quite at home in front of the Old Trafford crowd and quite at home as a Manchester United player.”

“He’s so calm,” echoes Diogo Dalot. “He’s settled in perfectly. He’s a very nice guy, very humble, very quick to settle. We’ll keep helping him, but I think he’s already shown everyone on the pitch that he’s ready for this club.”

Seemingly immune to pressure, Maguire has not arrived at Old Trafford armed with a raft of experience at one of the world’s leading clubs.

Rather, his move to United was the unstoppable next step in an evolution that’s been gathering pace since his early days at Sheffield United.

By the time he faced future team-mates Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba in the 2011 FA Youth Cup final between the Reds and the Blades, Maguire had already made five senior appearances for Micky Adams’s side in the Championship.

The 18-year-old’s early experiences of first-team football were chastening affairs as the Blades slipped down to League One, particularly heartbreaking for a passionate local lad who’d grown up and earned his trade at Bramall Lane.

Far from disheartened, however, the youngster instead established himself as a cornerstone of a youthful new Blades side which earned an instant shot at a return to the Championship under Danny Wilson by reaching the 2012 League One play-off final against Huddersfield Town.

Though Maguire helped keep a clean sheet in a goalless draw, then scored his spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out, the Blades were ultimately beaten and consigned to another season in the third tier.

After 2012/13 ended in another play-off defeat, this time in the semi-final, 2013/14 brought an unlikelier shot at glory as the Blades reached the FA Cup semi-finals.

Fronted with Steve Bruce’s Hull City, the odds were stacked high. Though the underdogs twice took the lead, the Premier League side eventually proved too strong and ran out 5-3 winners. Maguire, no respecter of reputations or occasions, was excellent.

“Even though we won that day, Harry was outstanding,” recalls former Tigers defender Alex Bruce, son of Reds legend Steve.

“Dad had been watching him anyway, and after the way he performed at Wembley, Dad came away from the stadium and said: ‘I’m taking him next season.’

“Harry was very good. Took the ball lovely, brought it out from the back like we’ve all seen him do. Dad didn’t mess about; he went and signed him not long after that game. Then he was with us in time for the next season.

“As soon as he walked through the door at Hull, the first thing we all thought was: ‘Jesus, what a big lad!’ He had so much presence, even though he was just a young lad who had made the big jump from League One. We knew that, for a young lad, he’d played a lot of games. It was a big jump, going from League One to the Premier League, but my old man led him in and out of the team and he learnt his trade at the top level.

“He made a couple of mistakes, like every young defender does, but on the whole you could tell he was going to be an exceptional defender, purely because of how good he was on the ball, his size, how he took the ball comfortably, he was good in the air, he had all the makings of being a really good centre-half. We could all soon tell that he was going to be an exceptional defender.”

A handful of first-team outings in Maguire’s debut term with Hull were supplemented by a loan spell at Wigan and, although both clubs were ultimately relegated from the Premier League and Championship respectively that season, it was in 2015/16 that the youngster played his way into regularity with his parent club.

Maguire took a key role as the Tigers bounced straight back into the top flight – once again via Wembley, beating Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final – and United repeatedly witnessed his excellence in 2016/17 as he took the Premier League by storm.

Hull were obdurate opponents across four head-to-head meetings that season, in which the Reds were repeatedly frustrated by the Tigers’ defensive resolve, with Maguire especially outstanding in a goalless Premier League draw at Old Trafford.

Thus, when Marco Silva’s side were relegated at the end of the season, Maguire was quickly picked up by an ambitious Leicester City, where another two campaigns of excellence – including a starring role in England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semis – prompted sustained interest from United.

It was the Reds’ narrow 1-0 win at the King Power Stadium in February which convinced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to try and bring him to Old Trafford this summer.

“I made my mind up then that if it was possible to get him, we would. He was always my number one target,” revealed the Norwegian, before the season opener against Chelsea.

“He is so composed on the ball and gives the team another dimension. He’s a leader, an established international, a goal threat, a very, very good defender – and also a very composed ball player. I know Harry is going to have a massive impact on us. You can see the impact he’s had on the group in the week he’s been in. Harry has already shown what a presence he will be.”

Already nicknamed ‘The Beast’ inside the corridors of the Aon Training Complex, Maguire’s early impressions have been swift and substantial.

“He’s a big guy,” smiles Dalot. “We already knew from the days he played at Leicester but it’s different when you see him in real life every day. We have a few young lads here, including myself, so to have that kind of experience in the dressing room is good. And of course, his natural leadership will be very good for the club.”

Sure enough, the early signs have backed up the confidence of Maguire’s new colleagues.

His assimilation to life as a United player has been almost seamless and, according to his former team-mate, there is a very good reason for this.

“He’s just a Manchester United player all day long, and he probably always has been one in the making,” says Alex Bruce.

“The size of him, he can brush people out of the way. He’s so confident on the ball, and when he starts running at you, opponents panic and it takes some stopping him.

“He always wants the ball, he starts attacks from defence better than anybody else in the game, for me, and United supporters will absolutely love him. He was born for this club.”

Pique Yakin Maguire Bakal Bawa MU Kembali ke Papan Atas
Lucas Aditya - detikSport

Van Dijk mampu membawa Liverpool menjuarai Liga Champions musim lalu.

'We're Man United and we want to control games... we need to show arrogance': Harry Maguire urges team-mates to recapture swagger

* Manchester United dropped points again, this time against Southampton
* Club's record signing Harry Maguire vented his frustration after full time
* He wants the team to show more arrogance and control the match better
* Maguire said: 'We need to improve on that and show arrogance on the ball'

Manchester United's record signing Harry Maguire wants his team-mates to rediscover their swagger after they dropped points in the Premier League for the third game in succession at Southampton.

United winger Daniel James' brilliant first-half goal was cancelled out by a Jannik Vestergaard header after the interval as the visitors were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.

The result left United on five points from four games after a home defeat by Crystal Palace and an away draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.

After Manchester United drew with Southampton, Harry Maguire wants to bring swagger back. Maguire wants the team to take more control of matches, particularly in possession

'We are playing attacking football but don't get me wrong we can still improve a lot especially on the ball,' Maguire, who arrived at Old Trafford from Leicester City at the start of the season, told reporters.

'We were giving it away sloppy, and we need to improve on that and show arrogance on the ball and be confident on the ball.

'We're Man United and we want to control games. In the last 20 of the first and in the first 20 of the second we didn't really control the game and we got punished for that.'

United recorded 21 attempts on goal and pushed for a winner in the closing stages when Southampton were reduced to 10 men after Kevin Danso was sent off.

Maguire said United must take their opportunities in front of goal if they are to keep up with their top four rivals.

'It was another game where we deserved to win, created the majority of the chances and we've dropped two points,' Maguire added. 'The start of our season has been a bit like that.

'With our performances we warrant more points but it will come, we will keep working hard and keep improving.'

'His behaviour typified him as a man': Brendan Rodgers praises Harry Maguire for how he handled £80m Manchester United move as he gets set for a Leicester reunion

* Brendan Rodgers has hailed the behaviour of Harry Maguire before he departed
* Maguire eventually sealed a record £80m move to join Manchester United
* But Rodgers was impressed with how Maguire handled talk of a summer exit
* Leicester will have a reunion with Maguire when they go to Old Trafford next

Brendan Rodgers has hailed the character of Harry Maguire and praised the way he handled his exit from Leicester this summer.

The England international sealed a record £80million move to Manchester United after a summer-long pursuit from the Old Trafford club.

Maguire continued to appear for Leicester in pre-season and showed little signs of agitation to force the move through, drawing praise from Rodgers as to how he handled it all.

'I text Harry still now, wish him the best when he was playing with England,' Rodgers said on Thursday.

'He was a remarkable guy and a fantastic player and for me, his behaviour in the period that he was here, really typified him as a man.

'Even though it was so difficult for him right the way through the summer, from the end of the season right the way through... I'll always have a big respect for him for that.

Harry Maguire has been praised with how he handled his £80million Manchester United move. Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers said his behaviour showed his qualities as a man as well. Maguire has made an immediate impact at United and has become a regular starter at the back. Rodgers dismissed talk that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have consulted Maguire for inside tips

'He's a good guy and he's gone in there and you can see he's made them better.'

Leicester head to Old Trafford on Saturday unbeaten in the Premier League with two wins and two draws to start the season. They are sat third behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

And Saturday's meeting, not only viewed as a reunion for Maguire, is seen as a crucial game in the battle for the top six.

The Foxes are considered the most likely candidates to upset the top order this season after smart recruitment and marked improvement since Rodgers took charge.

Maguire knows more than most about both sides but Rodgers was dismissive at suggestions the defender could have been consulted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his management team to find an advantage.

"Knowing how the game works, all the analysts do a lot of the work,' he added. 'I wouldn't have thought he (Solskjaer) would have spoken too much with Harry.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

He joined Man United for £80m with big shoes to fill as the world's most expensive defender... but how does Harry Maguire compare to his rivals?

* Harry Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City for £80million
* That fee broke the world record for a defender, which was Virgil van Dijk
* Sportsmail analyses Maguire's statistics in comparison with his biggest rivals
* The 26-year-old charts well for aerial duels and passing, with high success rates
* Maguire is not all too friendly with referees, picking up the most bookings

Harry Maguire has had huge expectations on his shoulders since sealing his record-breaking move to Manchester United from Leicester City earlier this summer.

Maguire's £80million switch - the most money ever spent on a defender - has naturally left fans and pundits closely scrutinising the 26-year-old's performances in a red shirt, particularly with the backdrop of Virgil van Dijk's hugely successful move to Liverpool in January 2018 for a former world record fee.

But how does Maguire's Premier League performances compare to his top six competitors? Sportsmail have broken down the stats behind the performances of Maguire's rivals, as well as his replacement at Leicester, Caglar Soyuncu, over the past six months to see how the Englishman fares...

Harry Maguire has had big expectations on his shoulders since joining for £80million

Pass Masters

Since Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City, coaches have looked to implement styles of play that require every member of the squad to be good with the ball at his feet.

While defending and tackling are prerequisites for any defender playing in the top flight, it is a defender's ability to play with the ball at his feet which makes him stand out from the rest.

Despite his bulky stature, Maguire's passing statistics since March 2019 read very well.

Only Manchester City's Aymeric Laporte (92.9 per cent) has a higher pass accuracy than the £80m man, who pips Van Dijk to second place.

Meanwhile, David Luiz sits at the foot of the table, despite his reputation as a dab hand with the ball at his feet.

Quote:
Passes (pass accuracy)

1st: 1009 (92.9%) Aymeric Laporte

2nd: 836 (88.6%) Harry Maguire

3rd: 1042 (87.8%) Virgil van Dijk

4th: 843 (86.6%) Toby Alderweireld

5th: 354 (86.16%) Caglar Soyuncu

6th: 780 (84.9%) David Luiz
Duel dominance

Unsurprisingly, given the fanfare surrounding his ability to defend one v one, Van Dijk tops this list.

The Dutch international's balance and poise makes it incredibly difficult for attackers to get past him, and it is the reason why Liverpool are so comfortable at remaining high up the pitch - because they know their defensive titan can cover any potential counter attacks.

Maguire again features respectably well in this table, winning 72.2 per cent of his duels since March 2019.

Bearing in mind that some of these statistics were recorded while he was a Leicester City player - a side who are more likely to have to defend more - this figure makes for all the more impressive reading.

Look away now Arsenal fans. If you see your man Luiz having to contest a one v one, hope for the very best. The Brazilian has a 53.7 per cent success rate in duel situations. Again, bottom of the pile here.

Quote:
Duels (success rate)

1st: 136 (75%) Virgil van Dijk

2nd: 90 (72.2%) Harry Maguire

3rd: 61 (67.2%) Caglar Soyuncu

4th: 53 (64.2%) Toby Alderweireld

5th: 87 (63.2%) Aymeric Laporte

6th: 95 (53.7%) David Luiz
Aerial control

This is Maguire's bread and butter.

The Englishman made a name for himself during last summer's World Cup for his aerial prowess in both attacking and defensive situations. And the stats back up what many perceive to be Maguire's greatest strength.

The former Leicester man comes in top of the standings for success rate in aerial duels, winning a very strong 76.2 per cent since March 2019 in the Premier League.

Yet again, Van Dijk is not far behind, with a 73.8 per cent success rate.

Maguire's replacement at the King Power Stadium, Caglar Soyuncu, makes up the top three with a respectable 67.6 per cent to back up his promising duel stats.

Unexpectedly, Spurs centre half Toby Alderweireld places at the bottom of the list. Despite his 6ft 2in frame, the Belgian does not have the most impressive record of defending aerial situations, with 56.3 per cent of duels won.

Quote:
Aerial duels (success rate)

1st: 63 (76.2%) Harry Maguire

2nd: 107 (73.8%) Virgil van Dijk

3rd: 34 (67.6%) Caglar Soyuncu

4th: 52 (57.7%) Aymeric Laporte

5th: 58 (56.9%) David Luiz

6th: 32 (56.3%) Toby Alderweireld

Maguire comes out on top in aerial duels as the Englishman lives up to his aerial reputation

In the ref's bad books

Given Maguire's sizeable frame, it may be unsurprising that he falls foul when it comes to escaping punishment from Premier League referees.

Of the six defenders on this list, Maguire is the only one to have seen red since March 2019, after being dismissed in the early stages of Leicester's superb victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Manchester United's new boy has also picked up two bookings in that time.

Luiz charts in second place as the Brazilian lives up to his reputation of being heavy-handed when it comes to bringing down his opponents, with two yellow cards in the last six months.

Soyuncu again impresses with zero bookings, although it should be noted the Turk has played just five Premier League games compared to his defensive colleagues.

The Rolls Royce that is Van Dijk also impresses with no bookings since spring.

Quote:
Bookings

1st: 3 (1 Red) Harry Maguire

2nd: 2 David Luiz

4th: 1 Aymeric Laporte

4th: 1 Toby Alderweireld

6th: 0 Caglar Soyuncu

6th: 0 Virgil van Dijk

Maguire saw red back in March when he was dismissed early on in Leicester's game at Burnley

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Man United legend Nemanja Vidic backs £80million man Harry Maguire but admits defence needs to improve

* Manchester United signed Leicester's Harry Maguire for £80million this summer
* The 26-year-old has been brought in to shore up a leaky defence at Old Trafford
* Club legend Nemanja Vidic has backed the new man to be a hit for the club
* Vidic stressed the importance of a strong defence for any successful team

Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has endorsed his former club's new signing Harry Maguire as the England international settles in at Old Trafford, but the Serb conceded that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defence needs to improve.

Maguire, an £80million signing from Leicester City, has been brought in by Solskjaer to shore up a defence that has been leaky since the Norwegian took over in December last year.

Vidic, who won the Champions League title with United in 2008, has praised the acquisition of the 26-year-old, who has proved an assured presence in United's back four.

Man United fans are hoping new signing Harry Maguire is the answer to their defensive woes. Nemanja Vidic has backed the 26-year-old to be a good signing for United in the long run

He said: 'I think he's had a pretty good start. Obviously we have big expectations of him, he was a big signing.

'If you want to win trophies, you need to have a strong defence, don't lose many goals. Obviously he's still new.

'He just came, he didn't have a pre-season with the team. I think better games are coming from him and I think he'll be a good signing.'

The Serb went on to say that United's defensive issues aren't totally resolved, stressing the importance of a strong defence for any team who are challenging for silverware.

'We need the defence to improve, we all know how important the defence is in winning trophies.'
