Cardiff 0 Charlton 0: Bluebirds hit the big league... Promotion jackpot means City's cash problems are over
MailOnline, Riath Al-samarrai - 16 April 2013

The gamble paid off. After years of spending, striving, crying and a trip to the High Court, Cardiff City finally secured their return to the top flight after a 51-year absence.

Ultimately, it wasn’t pretty, a goalless draw securing the promotion that looked in recent years like it might never materialise.

But when you’ve had a season like Cardiff have had, that can probably be forgiven.

Going up: Cardiff players celebrate in the changing room after getting promoted to the Premier League

Some people are on the pitch: Cardiff fans celebrate on the pitch saying goodbye to the Football League Show and welcoming being on Match of the Day

Promotion flag: Rudy Gestede and Craig Noone celebrate going up

Such was their sustained dominance of this division, they could have swallowed a loss last night and still gone up considering* Watford’s loss at Millwall.

That is academic now in much the same way as their enormous debts should be when the Premier League cheques are cashed. To think, just three years ago they were in court fighting a winding-up order.

Perhaps that’s what those fans were thinking when they stormed the pitch and danced manaically at the end, one waving a banner that read: ‘Goodbye Manish, hello Gary’ — a reference to the presenters of the BBC’s football highlights shows.

Another read: ‘Look out Swansea, we are coming to get you.’

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay said: ‘The people of Cardiff deserved this. They have backed me and backed this team. I am delighted for them. This division is about getting good people and good characters and we have that. This division is getting better and better so for us to get promoted, I am so happy.’

His captain, Mark Hudson, added: ‘We have had moments when we have all looked into each other’s eyes and all knew how much we wanted to go up.

‘The fans have had a long wait for this. I am so happy for everyone involved. So much has happened.’

Indeed, at the end of each of the past three seasons their campaign has ended with defeat in the play-offs. Four years ago they collapsed spectacularly on the stretch and finished seventh.

We've done it: Rudy Gestede and Craig Noone celebrate after the final whistle

Quite how they have kept it together financially over that period, which has also included defeats in the finals of the FA Cup and League Cup, is anyone’s guess. Their most recent set of accounts revealed debts of £83million, the consequence of an almost reckless desire from successive owners to reach the Premier League goldmine.

As recently as yesterday afternoon that appeal was underlined with news that teams relegated from next season’s top flight will pocket £60million in parachute payments over four years — a £12m rise on what was already a tasty consolation.

Celebration time: Cardiff chairman Vincent Tan celebrates after watching his side win promotion

But for all Cardiff’s spending — Craig Bellamy is understood to earn in the region of £35,000 a week, Fraizer Campbell £25,000 — it has never looked like a gamble in this particular campaign.

They went top of the table in November and have not slipped since. They have, by some margin, been the best of the second string, even if there were moments last night when that might have seemed dubious.

Cardiff City Clinches First Promotion Bid for Next Season

Not many 0-0 draws will be celebrated in the fashion that Cardiff City celebrated their scoreless match with Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

By earning the one point at the Cardiff City Stadium, the Bluebirds became the first club to secure promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Malky Mackay's club have been dominant in the second division all season. With a 13-point gap on the playoff positions, third through sixth, with three matches remaining, a spot in the EPL was easily secured.

The promotion marks the first time in 53 years that Cardiff will play in the English top flight and it will give Welsh football fans a chance to see a Welsh derby in the EPL next season between the Bluebirds and Swansea City.

As for how the rest of the Championship clubs fared on Tuesday, second-placed Hull City were unable to extend the gap on third-placed Watford after losing 1-0 on the road to Wolverhampton.

Third-placed Watford also fell on the road on Tuesday by losing 1-0 to Millwall at The Den.

Brighton and Hove Albion jumped over Crystal Palace in the race for fourth by playing to a 0-0 draw with Peterborough United. Palace fell 3-0 on the road to Ipswich Town.

In the battle for the final playoff position, which is sixth place in the table, Leicester City reclaimed their spot in the top six by beating seventh-placed Bolton Wanderers, 3-2, at the King Power Stadium.

Jeffrey Schlupp's 79th minute goal was the game-winner for the Foxes, who lead Bolton and Nottingham Forest by one point in the race for sixth.

A full slate of matches will be played on Friday and Saturday as the race to join Cardiff in the EPL next season intensifies.

Here is how the Championship table looks after play on Tuesday.

Club--------------------Matches Played---Points---Goal Differential
Cardiff City--------------------43-----------84---------27
Hull City-----------------------43-----------77---------11
Watford-----------------------43-----------71---------23
Brighton & Hove Albion------43-----------66---------18
Crystal Palace-----------------42-----------66---------10
Leicester City-----------------43------------64---------23

Malaysia, Sponsor Utama Cardiff City

Pada situs resminya, Cardiff memuat headline: “CARDIFF WEAR ‘MALAYSIA’ WITH PRIDE”

Nah lho, Kita masih ribut ama jubir, eh tetangga udah jd sponsor Cardiff.

*mengatasnamakan Negara ???

Bruce in heaven with Hull as rejuvenated boss bouncing back to big time
MailOnline, Michael Walker - 18 April 2013

There were gusts of laughter blowing through the open door of Steve Bruce's office at Hull City's training ground yesterday.

Bruce needs little encouragement to mock his profession or himself, and laughed at the idea of him, a former Birmingham City manager, being employed by Aston Villa last summer, though he was interested. He then jokingly referred to Paolo Di Canio, now at Sunderland, as 'the mad Italian', and recalled happy doubts following Hull's friendly at Hartlepool last August.

Serious business: Steve Bruce is within touching distance of the Premier League

'I was driving away thinking, "Jesus",' Bruce guffaws. 'We drew 1-1. I was thinking, "There's work to be done". But we brought in a few players, got off to a decent start and played some great stuff.'*

Beat relegated Bristol City and Hull will be nine points ahead of third-placed Watford in the Championship. Watford have three games to play.

By Saturday evening Hull City could once more be a Premier League club and Bruce, 52, a* Premier League manager again. For all the laughter, that is a serious achievement; and Bruce is serious about his reputation.

It suffered at Sunderland, his last post. He was into his third season there when he was dismissed. 'When you get sacked everybody thinks, "He's a football manager, he'll get lots of money",' Bruce says. 'But you still get sacked, which for me is a slur, it degrades you, you feel as if you're not capable of doing your job. So it hurt.'*

It was not the only slur Bruce felt. He says he was portrayed as a dinosaur, old school and not in a good way. He points at the computer screen on his desk and adds: 'It was said I was not internet-friendly and how could I be a Premier League manager?*

Slur: Bruce objects to his old-school tag

Setback: Hull's promotion charge was halted by defeat at Wolves

'I don't trawl the internet, I don't profess to be like that. But I can send an email and we have all sorts of sports science here. And man-management far outweighs sports science. We have six of our backroom staff into sports science and it's vital. But is Sir Alex Ferguson old school? Arsene Wenger, David Moyes? You can get tarred with that tag. Last summer the young coach became fashionable.

Ten years ago if you were a young English manager you had to take a team into the Premier League, you rarely got given one. It's changing, but those sorts of slurs are an insult. I don't want to "do" emails, "do" Twitter. But I can still get on the internet.'

Ten years ago Bruce was at Birmingham, having taken them into the* Premier League. He thinks taking Hull back to the top flight they departed in financial straits in 2010 'would rank right up there', adding: 'Nobody gave us a chance and when you see some of the big clubs - Leicester, Derby, Wolves, Blackburn - to have Hull go up would be terrific. When teams come down they can get lost. When Hull went up it was great but financially they were a mess. There have to be some foundations laid.'*

Bruce gratefully acknowledges Hull's saviours, the Allam family, and adds that while he considers it part of his job to knock on a chairman's door, he will go along with prudence if promotion comes. The Allams, refugees from Egypt's Six-Day War in 1967, have pumped an estimated £60million into Hull since stepping in three years ago. Prudence depends on perspective.

Painful: Bruce was hurt by Sunderland sacking

Warrior: Bruce in his playing days for Manchester Utd

In discussions last May, Bruce got to know Assem Allam, who he refers to as 'the old man'. Bruce thought of him while covering the Champions League final for BBC Radio 5: 'Do I really want to be sitting beside Alan Green?' Another laugh.

'Dr Allam stopped the club from going into administration. The place was on its knees, millions in debt. But even if he said, "There's £100m if you can guarantee we'll stay up" . . . well, you've got a better chance but you start looking at players for around £15m. The only way they're going to come to Hull is if you pay extortionate wages.

'So I think we'd look to be in a situation where we'd be really strong if we went back to the Championship. I don't mean a yo-yo club, but to be like West Brom. Supporters tear their hair out if you get relegated but at least the club isn't going into Armageddon.*

'And this club was very close to being another Portsmouth. Hull could have gone into oblivion.' Bruce wasn't laughing now.* Neither are Portsmouth. Hull City and their manager understand where they are.
