Harry Maguire suffers torn hip muscle to leave Manchester United short at the back after he insisted on playing through the pain against Wolves and made the problem WORSE

* Harry Maguire is set for extended period on sidelines with a torn hip muscle
* He suffered the injury against Wolves and played through pain, making it worse
* Maguire was absent for Manchester United's 3-1 defeat by Manchester City
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been dealt a bitter blow with news of the injury
* The manager is suddenly short on centre-back options after raft of injuries

Manchester United have been hit by another injury blow as it emerged that Harry Maguire has suffered a torn hip muscle.

Maguire, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's key defender since his £80million move from Leicester in the summer, was hurt during last Saturday's FA Cup stalemate at Wolves. The 26-year-old pulled up in the first half but played on despite the pain to complete the third-round tie.

Now scans have revealed a torn muscle at the top of his hip and there are fears he could be out for an extended period.

United began the season with seven central defenders, but now only have two fit seniors in that position after injuries and letting Chris Smalling leave for Roma.

Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof played together in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City and, although Jones felt cramp towards the end of the game, they are likely to continue in United's next match, against Norwich on Saturday.

Eric Bailly is still recovering from a serious knee injury, while Axel Tuanzebe and Marcos Rojo have both been unavailable recently.

Rojo — who has started just two Premier League fixtures since Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho — could yet depart Old Trafford by the end of the January transfer window. United may look to bring a player in on loan.

Harry Maguire suffered a torn hip muscle against Wolves and played on, making it worse. The centre back played through the pain barrier but ended up making the problem worse. The commanding defender has been an important player and is a loss to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer will be desperate for Maguire to return quickly. The United boss insists the injury, which can lead to a six-week absence if severe, does not appear to be a 'long term' issue. Maguire has been ever-present in the league so far this term, while Jones started only his second game since October against City.

Jones and Lindelof were heavily criticised after the hosts conceded three first-half goals against City. Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher claimed that both central defenders must be braver.

Jones's long-term prospects lie away from Old Trafford after Solskjaer jettisoned him from first-team action earlier in the season. His only league appearance lasted just 45 minutes before Solskjaer took him off when 1-0 down at Sheffield United in November.

United have other injury issues, with midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay both sidelined for the month. It means Solskjaer must rely on Andreas Pereira and Fred in midfield, while Nemanja Matic has returned to the fray.

Ashley Young is set to sign a pre-contact with Inter Milan this week to end his nine- year stay at Manchester United. The agreement will see former England star Young, 34, join Antonio Conte's side next season.

Inter were keen on signing Young this month as they look to bolster their title challenge — but United were not prepared to let him leave in January. Currently playing in defence, Young has been a huge presence since his arrival as a winger from Aston Villa in 2011 for £17million.

He has gone on to make over 250 appearances for the club under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Hip hip Harry! Maguire's injury not as bad as Manchester United feared... with defender even having an outside chance of featuring against Norwich

* Manchester United defender Harry Maguire's hip injury is not as bad as feared
* The £80million defender has an outside chance of featuring against Norwich
* Sportsmail understands Maguire's tear at the top of his hip is a small one
* The 26-year-old was even able to train on grass at Carrington on Thursday

Harry Maguire's hip injury is not as bad as feared and Manchester United’s £80million defender even has an outside chance of making a surprise comeback against Norwich on Saturday.

Maguire tore the muscle at the top of his hip in last weekend’s FA Cup tie at Wolves, and there were concerns that he could be out of action for up to two months.

However, Sportsmail understands the tear is only a small one, and it is likely to be a matter of days rather than weeks before Maguire is fit to play again.

The 26-year-old defender was able to train on grass at Carrington on Thursday and so could even be in contention to face Norwich at Old Trafford, though that still seems unlikely.

The nature of the injury around an awkward area like the hip means that United are reluctant to push Maguire too hard in case he aggravates the problem and is ruled out for much longer.

However, the England player has a high pain threshold and is prepared to risk himself for a United team badly in need of a win after Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat at home to Manchester City.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire's hip injury is believed to not be as bad as feared. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may even be able to recall Maguire for United's clash with Norwich

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about Maguire’s injury after that game, saying: ‘It’s not going to be a long, long, long-term one. I don’t think he will ready for the weekend, but let’s see.’

Solskjaer is expected to provide an update on the Maguire injury at his weekly press conference.

He is sure to be hugely relieved that Maguire’s injury is not worse, after seeing his team’s defence torn apart by City in midweek, conceding three first-half goals on the way to the 3-1 defeat. In the absence of Maguire, Phil Jones was brought in to partner Victor Lindelof in central defence.

Maguire was just one United defender missing through injury, as other absentees included Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Jones is on standby to play again on Saturday. Rojo has returned from Argentina and could be available soon, while Solskjaer has said that Tuanzebe and Bailly are closer to full fitness.

One defender not on call, though, is Chris Smalling, who has impressed during his first four months on loan to Roma. He cannot return to Old Trafford until the end of the season as United did not include a recall clause.

Manchester United's Eric Bailly in contention for Liverpool clash as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms he is 'very close' to returning after recovering from knee ligament damage

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given a very positive update regarding Eric Bailly
* Bailly has not played since suffering knee ligament damage in pre-season
* Manchester United are monitoring his progress ahead of the Liverpool match
* He came through a reserve game against Newcastle on Friday unscathed
* He will have an another outing on Tuesday to see if he is ready for Anfield

Eric Bally is close to full fitness for the first time this season and could return for Sunday's trip to Liverpool.

The Ivory Coast defender has not played for the first team since suffering knee ligament damage in the pre-season friendly against Tottenham in Shanghai last summer.

But manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Bailly came through a reserve game against Newcastle on Friday without any reaction and will have another outing on Tuesday to see if he is ready for Anfield.

'He's very close,' said the United boss. 'He might be back for the weekend. We've got a game arranged today for the reserves. Hopefully he will get 90 minutes so he might be ready for Liverpool.'

United have been stretched in central defence recently after Harry Maguire suffered a torn hip muscle with Axel Tuanzebe, Marcos Rojo and Bailly already out of action.

The club did not include a recall clause in Chris Smalling's loan to Roma so he will not be an option until the end of the season.

Solskjaer also confirmed that Ashley Young would 'not be involved at all' again after the United captain was strongly linked with a move to Inter Milan.

Young will be out of contract in the summer and has rejected the offer of a new one-year at Old Trafford.

He has been able to negotiate a more lucrative 18-month deal with Inter and wants to leave in the January transfer window but has been told that he may have to wait until the summer.

United face Wolves in their FA Cup third-round replay at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in what will be their 14th game in 46 days. Solskjaer admits the schedule leading up to the winter break is 'relentless' but backed his players to handle the burden.

'Results give you energy,' he added. 'We've still got five or six games before the winter break. It's relentless, 18 games in less than 60 days which is physically and mentally demanding.

'We have to energise them. You just need the rhythm. When I was playing I felt us as a team got rhythm of match, rest, match, rest. I never got that physical thing. Players like Roy (Keane), (Paul) Scholes and Gary (Neville) improved.

'We've played Wolves so many times so we're going to be facing a team that know more or less everything about us. We've got them in a couple of weeks in the league too.

'We played a decent first half last week (in a 0-0 draw at Molineux) but the second half was disappointing. At home we want to make sure we go through. This tournament is one we dream about winning when we are young. I loved my time in finals and winning trophies so we want to go through.'

'That backfired': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits it was an error to bring Marcus Rashford on in win over Wolves as star man hobbles off 16 minutes later with back injury to give Manchester United major scare ahead of crunch Liverpool showdown

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer benched Marcus Rashford so he'd be fresh for Liverpool
* But the striker came on with Manchester United drawing against Wolves
* He lasted only 15 minutes, coming off hurt after a tangle with Matt Doherty
* Rashford later tweeted that he was disappointed to have to leave the pitch

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that his decision to play Marcus Rashford 'backfired' after the Manchester United striker aggravated a back injury in the FA Cup win over Wolves.

Rashford was sent on as a substitute in the second half but had to be replaced just 16 minutes later and is now a major doubt for Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

'Yes it backfired,' said Solskjaer. 'I kept him away today but we needed the win.

'You have got to take them (chances) once in a while. He couldn't run. He's struggled a little bit with a couple of knocks in his back recently and now he's got another one.

Asked if he is worried about Rashford's availability for Anfield, the United boss added: 'Yes of course I am. I didn't want to play him but I think he got a knock from a knee in his back.

'He's been absolutely top this season and we'll do everything to get him fit.

'He is a quick healer and he'll play through some pain if he's capable and it's not a bad injury. He's struggled more when he's been tired but he wasn't on long enough to be tired.'

Rashford, who is United's leading scorer this season with 19 goals in all competitions, went down under a challenge from Matt Doherty.

Marcus Rashford went off injured in Manchester United's FA Cup replay with Wolves. The news gives United a major worry ahead of Sunday's match against fierce rivals Liverpool

The United bench immediately signalled that he needed to come off but he stayed on for another two minutes before being replaced by Jesse Lingard.

'That was because Jesse was down in the corner flag,' explained Solskjaer, who took Rashford off against Norwich on Saturday because of the same problem.

'Any moment a tie can go to extra-time. He had to stay on for two minutes. and there was no chance he was going to be able to run.'

Rashford has struggled with back problems for so long that he brings a Melmak ultrasound machine with him to games to help ease the problem.

On Wednesday night he tweeted: 'Never want to feel like I've let my teammates, the club and most importantly the fans down so did my very best to carry on tonight and was gutted to come off.

'Top work from the lads to get into the next round.'

Juan Mata's 67th minute goal gave United their first win over Wolves in five attempts under Solskjaer and secured a fourth round trip to Tranmere or Watford.

'We wanted to beat them and finally we did it,' said Mata.

'I had a lot of time and it's better not to have time when you are facing a goalkeeper. Luckily it was onside. I was waiting for VAR. You have to wait for it these days but in the end we are happy.'

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was once again left cursing VAR after Pedro Neto had an early goal chalked off for a controversial handball decision against Raul Jimenez.

'That's VAR, something is wrong,' said Nuno, who saw a Matt Doherty headed goal ruled out for handball in a goalless draw with united at Molineux 12 days ago.

'We're afraid to celebrate and then Old Trafford celebrates a non goal.'

Huge blow for Manchester United as Marcus Rashford faces up to THREE MONTHS out with double stress fracture in the back - and he's also due to have clean-up surgery on his ankle

* Marcus Rashford aggravated back problem during an FA Cup win over Wolves
* England star has scored 19 times for United this season in all competitions
* Rashford is expected to miss three months of action because of the injury
* The striker is also expected to have a clean-up surgery on his ankle

Marcus Rashford is facing up to three months on the sidelines amid concerns he has incurred a double stress fracture of his back.

The Manchester United and England striker is also expected to have clean-up surgery on his ankle to remove a piece of floating bone that he has been playing with.

Rashford's injury is also worrying for England manager Gareth Southgate who was already sweating over Harry Kane's fitness for Euro 2020 this summer.

Rashford had been receiving treatment on a troublesome back injury prior to coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup win over Wolves in midweek and was forced to come off after getting another knock to the area - a blow which now looks to have caused the second stress fracture.

Solskjaer confirmed after United's defeat by Liverpool that Rashford would be facing a lengthy spell on the touchlines.

He told Sky Sports: 'He's suffered a bad injury. It's a stress fracture that happened against Wolves and it's not something that's happened before.

'He'll be out for a while. He won't be back until after the mid-season break. Normally a stress fracture is six weeks and he needs some rehab after that.'

Solskjaer admitted that he might have to look at a short-term signing to replace Rashford before the January transfer window closes having already missed out on Erling Haaland to strengthen his attack.

Solskjaer admitted that he might have to look at a short-term signing to replace Rashford before the January transfer window closes having already missed out on Erling Haaland to strengthen his attack.

'When you miss Scott, Paul and Marcus any club and any team will notice that,' added the United boss. 'So that might mean that we might look at some short-term deals to take us to the summer. It might not.

'The permanent signings we are looking for, those targets are not going to change because we've got two or three players injured for the next few months. But there might be some short term deals that we have to do if the right one is there and fits for us.

'It's just an unfortunate situation we're in. We don't desperately need a striker. We've got players who are champing at the bit.

'But we're always looking at chances to improve the squad. With Marcus out for a while we have to look at it closely.'

Southgate will also be monitoring the situation closely after Kane's involvement at Euro 2020 was plunged into doubt following hamstring surgery.

Rashford, who has scored 19 goals for United in all competitions this season, was tipped to lead the line for England if the Tottenham striker is ruled out but there is now a big question mark hanging over him as well.

The 22-year-old has started every Premier League game for United this season and has led their attack very well with four goals in his past four league outings.

Marcus Rashford 'is using a girdle' to help overcome double stress fracture in his back and return to Manchester United's bid for Champions League

* Marcus Rashford is aiming to be back playing for Manchester United in April
* Rashford is using a girdle - a belt around his torso - to help his back recover
* He suffered a double stress fracture to his back against Wolves in January
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was roundly criticised for overplaying the 22-year-old

Marcus Rashford has stepped up his effort to be fit for Manchester United's Premier League run-in by using a girdle.

Rashford was ruled out until April in January after suffering a double stress fracture to his back during the FA Cup third-round replay against Wolves.

The United striker, according to The Sun, is having to use a girdle - a belt which is worn around the torso to help support the back - to help accelerate his recovery.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was roundly criticised for continuing to play Rashford despite the 22-year-old being in pain.

Solskjaer admitted afterwards that the decision 'backfired', and Ian Wright was one of the game's loudest, most damning voices.

'Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he knew Marcus Rashford was struggling and played him against Wolves - now he's out for three months,' Wright said at the time.

Marcus Rashford suffered a double stress fracture to his back against Wolves on January 15. Rashford isn't expected back until April but is trying to speed up his recovery by using a girdle. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was roundly criticised for overplaying the Manchester United striker

'We're talking about an explosive player that's going to need to be right.

'Solskjaer is under intense pressure to get United back where they were and he's thought about himself before he thought about the player. Solskjaer has put himself above Marcus Rashford's health.

'Now, one of their most promising and most important players is out and that has to come to the manager's door.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals Marcus Rashford is 'out for another few months' and could MISS Euro 2020 with troublesome back injury... while £89m midfielder Paul Pogba is 'not anywhere near' return to training

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave an injury update on Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba
* The Manchester United boss said Rashford is out 'for another few months' still
* He also admitted that Pogba is no closer to making a return to first team training

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Marcus Rashford will be out 'for another few months' with the back injury that now jeopardises his chances of playing for England at Euro 2020.

United's top scorer has not played for more than a month after it was revealed that he has suffered a double stress fracture in his back.

Solskjaer initially predicted that Rashford would be out for a few weeks but the prognosis worsened after the player had scans, and there is now a possibility that he will not play again this season – casting doubt over his participation at the Euros.

Marcus Rashford suffered a long-term injury to deal a huge blow to Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intimated that Rashford may not feature again this season for United. Rashford is still out 'for another few months' and could be forced to skip Euro 2020 for England

'I would hope he's playing this season but it will just be touch and go towards the end,' said Solskjaer ahead of the Europa League tie in Bruges on Thursday night.

'Hopefully we get through this tournament and prolong the season. It takes time.

'I'm not a doctor but I was hoping he would recover quicker. It actually looks like he's going to be out for another few months definitely.'

Asked about Euro 2020, Solskjaer added: 'Well, I would hope he plays before then but if he's not fit enough he won't go.'

'He had a scan and it was maybe more severe, that fracture, than what we hoped for and expected. He felt fine the few days before that.

'I've never done anatomy in school so I didn't know it takes that time to recover, but when it heals he'll be stronger for it – it's important we won't rush him.'

There was more bad injury news for United after Solskjaer confirmed that Paul Pogba is still a long way off returning to action. The Frenchman has only played twice since September following ankle surgery and is not expected to resume light training for another couple of weeks at least.

The United boss added: 'He's not been part of team training yet and it will depend on how he feels when he's ready to do that. He's not anywhere near that yet.'

United have signed Odion Ighalo on loan until the end of the season to fill the void left by Rashford, and Solskjaer is considering giving the Nigerian his full debut in Belgium after seeing him settle in well at the club.

Paul Pogba has been working hard on his fitness but is not close to training, Solskjaer insisted. The midfielder's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain with talk of a summer transfer rife

Ighalo missed United's warm-weather training camp in Marbella amid the coronavirus alert after he signed from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, but he came on as a substitute in Monday's win at Chelsea.

'I'm not going to tell you the team today but we're going to have to rotate with all the games coming up and he's one that could start. We've not made a decision yet,' said Solskjaer.

'Odion is a different type of striker for us. He's a box striker, a goal scorer. We've seen him training and he knows his craft, how to train as a centre-forward. He's a fantastic professional and human being, and already added to the squad.

'The boys have taken to him. I hope he's going to sharpen up quickly. He's been out of season and needs to do a little bit extra after training. We try to give him as much game time as possible. He had a good chance at Chelsea but I'm sure he will take his chances.'

Solskjaer is unhappy that United were made to play Chelsea on Monday just three days before their round of 32 knockout tie in Bruges, but backed his players to handle the situation.

'Of course, it does have a big impact because two days recovery is not a lot,' he said.

'We had two weeks to prepare for this spell and we'll have seven games in 21 days, starting Monday and ending Sunday against City – a game every three days.

'But we have a big squad and we've travelled with 19. I have to make use of the squad I've got. You would want a game on Saturday before the Thursday.

'We had 16 days off but we can't complain, it is what it is. I just mentioned it because it's not the best of preparation but these boys are brilliant. They are young and fresh, and recover quickly.'
